He joined the family farm in 1982 and expanded from 25 milking cows to the present 150. A McGill University graduate, Ron has been actively involved in the dairy industry at the provincial and national levels. He has been President of the P.E.I. Dairy Producers and Chair of the P.E.I. Milk Marketing Board. At the national level, Ron was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dairy Bureau of Canada, then of the Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) in 1995, and re-appointed in 2000. He was elected to DFC’s Executive Committee in July 2008. Terry Whiting, DVM Dr. Whiting graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 1984. He spent 22 of his last 25 years working for Governments in the areas of food safety, animal health, and enforcement of animal care legislation including eight years with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and 14 years with the provincial veterinary infrastructure. Terry is frequently published in peer reviewed journals primarily on humane transportation of animals, animal welfare risks of Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) outbreaks, and veterinary public policy. Rich Vanderwal, DVM Dr. Vanderwal was raised on a dairy farm, and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He practices as a B.C. dairy production veterinarian and embryo transfer team lead. Dr. Vanderwal is also a Holstein breeder and an official dairy judge for Holstein Canada. He has judged both locally and internationally, and teaches judging to 4H and WCC dairy youth programs. Rich brings a practical approach to applying good management practices to the dairy farm Dave Zuest 2:50 p.m. Q & A, Wrap up and Adjourn SEMINAR POWERED BY Dave is from the Sumas Prairie and grew up with close connections to the B.C. dairy industry. In 1989, he was recruited by the Meat Production and Inspection Branch of Agriculture Canada and performed inspections of red meat, poultry, and processing establishments. In 1977, he joined the Animal Health Disease Control Section of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Presently, Dave is an Animal Program Inspector with CFIA’s Transportation of Animals Program in the Fraser East-B.C. Coastal Region. SPEAKERS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2013 DAIRY EXPO FARM TOURS Tom Grozier Tom works out of BDO’s Langley office and focuses on domestic income tax planning for closely-held corporations and estate and succession planning matters. Tom works with a variety of clients including both dairy and poultry farms. Tom has been a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation since 2008 and is currently a sessional professor of taxation at BCIT. Shabtai Bittman, PhD Shabtai has had an illustrious and productive career working in research for over 30 years. Previously, he held research positions in Quebec, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and for the past 20 years in B.C. Currently, Dr. Bittman is a Research Scientist at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) based in Agassiz, B.C. Mark Raymond As an environmental agrologist, Mark provides support to the environmental health and programs team of the Sustainable Agriculture Management Branch with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture. Since graduating from the University of Alberta, Mark has worked in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia in government and the private sector. He has experience as a nutrient management planner and agriculture product sales representative. Since joining the Ministry, Mark has worked on programming to manage SRM and is currently providing support to both the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) and BMP programs. Jeff Rushen, PhD Jeff is a researcher in dairy cattle behaviour and welfare at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) based in Agassiz, B.C. He is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Laval in Quebec. Jeff’s current areas of research includes on-farm assessments of cow comfort, improved detection of lameness in cows, and group housing of dairy calves.
