WELCOME
that the Intensive played a small
part in beginning their journey to the
professional stage.” Well said, and the
training and experience participants
receive through this Arts Club program
will be invaluable in preparing them
for their future careers—whatever that
career may be!
The director of Rock of Ages, Peter
Jorgensen, also runs our Musical
Theatre Intensive program, which will
celebrate 15 years of training young
people this annual summer. (There
are two programs, with the Junior
presentations on Friday, July 29 and
the Senior show on Saturday, August
20, both at the Goldcorp Stage at the
BMO Theatre Centre if you’d like to
see their work.) Some graduates of the
program have gone on to professional
careers including, most notably,
Kaylee Harwood who appeared in our
productions of Les Misérables, and on
Broadway with the Stratford Festival.
Peter Jorgensen writes about the
experience of developing these
musical talents: “For 15 summers the
Musical Theatre Intensive has been a
cornerstone of my life as an artist here
in Vancouver. Each summer, I have
had the great fortune of working with
engaging, passionate young artists who
are hungry to learn the craft of what
we do in the theatre. Through them, I
have become a stronger artist myself.
The icing on the cake is to see so many
of our alumni becoming professional
theatre artists. I have cast (and even
performed opposite) MTI alumni in
many productions now, and everyone
has been a joy to work with, knowing
Also dear to our hearts is the Arts
Club’s Volunteer Program, sponsored
by Manulife. And as we come to the
end of our season, we salute our
volunteers and say thank you for
contributing time and resources to our
charitable organization. This season,
we welcomed a massive increase in our
volunteer pool. Our volunteers provide
assistance in all areas of the company.
They have totaled a whopping 3300
hours of time with us this season
and we couldn’t do what we do
without them. If you’re interested in
volunteering with the Arts Club, just go
to artsclub.com/about/opportunities/
volunteer for more information.
We’d also like to thank our dedicated
group of artists and theatre-loving
administrators and production staff
for their work this season. They’re all
listed on page 30 of your programme,
and we salute them all! To our artist
and production teams, who ensure
our stages are alive with the art of
theatre, to guest services like frontof-house, box office, and bars, who
ensure you feel a member of this
club, to marketing, development, and
administration who ensure we have a
future to grow into—thank you. And to
you… for to whom we do it all. Thanks
for your continued support.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Parmida Zarrinkamar, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.

ABOUT THE CREATORS & SHOW
Chris D’Arienzo (book) is a writer and actor, best known for Rock of Ages (2012);
Barry Munday (2010), and the in-development Always on My Mind, about a country
music star succumbing to Alzheimer’s, featuring Nick Nolte and Glenn Close. He
is also currently at work on a stage musical adaptation of Martin Scorcese’s 1982
movie The King of Comedy for New Regency.
Ethan Popp’s (arrangements and orchestrations) recent credits include Broadway
productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Motown: The Musical, Disney’s Tarzan,
Aida, We Will Rock You, and many more. He received a 2014 Grammy nomination
and a 2013 Tony nomination for his work on Motown: The Musical. His work can
also be heard on television’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
The Broadway incarnation of Rock of Ages wrapped up a six-year run in January 2015.
It is now running in Las Vegas, and spawned West End, Japanese, Australian, and
numerous touring productions. The show was nominated for five Tony Awards. It
also received two Drama League nominations, and two Outer Critics Circle Award
nominations. On July 1, 2009, after a matinee performance of Rock of Ages, the cast
set a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Air Guitar Ensemble. A total of
810 participants shattered the previous record, which 440.
