Reminiscing about Kilmarnock Christmases past
H
by Mary Lee Johnson
ere it is December 14th and tonight is the
Christmas parade. I always marvel at the
long-range planning that precedes such a
well organized event. Having followed the
Lancaster High School Band from its conception until
now, I feel a sense of pride when I hear them perform.
Now that my neighbor, a LHS senior, plays the trumpet, my pride increases.
The Christmas season is usually one of reflections.
My mind turns to the Christmases following the incorporation of the Town of
Kilmarnock in 1930. Christmas wasn’t
the colorful time that it is now. Electricity had just come into use. There were
no street lights. There was no television
and radio was just beginning. Christmas wasn’t so commercialized. Stores
in town stayed open at night, so staying
open at night at Christmas time was no
exception. Saturday night was the time
when most people came to town.
My Saturday night remembrances prior to Christmas include going to Sargent Brent’s Department store
which was destroyed by the fire of March 1952. It was
on the site of Lipscomb’s Furniture Store, where my
mother’s very good friend worked. She was the wife
of the town’s barber, Harry Dorhman. About a month
before Christmas, Mr. Brent displayed Christmas toys.
Children were allowed to pull the wagons and ride the
tricycles around the store. My brother was reluctant
to leave the tricycle. He cried, but my daddy didn’t
give in. On the second Saturday night, my daddy succumbed to my brother’s tears. My daddy said that he
knew who Santa Claus was, even if my brother didn’t.
There may have been other stores which displayed
toys, but I don’t remember them.
The only Santa Claus in town was the one in Sullivan’s Department Store on the corner of Irvington
Road and Main Street. He was still nodding his head
when the store was torn down. Someone acquired
him so that he would not be destroyed. There were no
artificial Christmas trees. Traditionally, the Christmas
trees were cedar, often cut down by the children of the
household and decorated by them. There
were no lights on them. Ornaments made
of glass and tinsel were used to decorate
the tree. The tree was taken down when
it began to shed.
Children seldom got more than one
toy. Sometimes the toy was to be shared.
One of my friends told of her getting a
doll which was to be shared with her two
sisters. When she told this to her children, they thought she was not telling
the truth.
Yes, Christmas in the newly incorporated Town of
Kilmarnock was a special time of the year. A Santa
Claus from each church congregation appeared to
greet the children with his traditional “Ho, ho, ho,”
and a stocking with an orange, apple and candy.
Yes, Christmas in Kilmarnock in the 1930s was different than today. Christmas decorations, celebrations
and commercialization will continue to change, but
the reason for Christmas, Christ’s birth, was the reason
we celebrated Christmas in Kilmarnock in 1930 and it
continues to be our reason for celebrating Christmas
in Kilmarnock in 2007.

Letters to Santa
Rappahannock Record • Kilmarnock, VA • December 20, 2007
Dear Santa,
My name is Haley Lewis
and I am 2 years old. I live in
White Stone with my Mommy,
Daddy and kitty. I am getting
my Mommy to write my letter
so you can read it.
This year I’ve been a really
good girl. I would like lots
of toys for Christmas. I love
Sesame Street, especially Elmo,
so any toy with Elmo would
be nice. I also love books and
puzzles so me and grandma
can put them together and read
together. I hope to see you soon
and I promise not to pull your
beard.
Love, Haley Lewis
White Stone, Va.
Dear Santa,
My name is Cheyenne Nance
and I am 6 months old. I would
love it if you could bring me
a Dora doll and maybe some
Dora movies. Can you also
bring Mommy and Daddy
something special?
I will leave you some milk
and cookies.
Love, Cheyenne Nance
Reedville
Dear Santa,
Hi, it’s Pierson Long. I am
really excited about Christmas.
I have been trying to be a good
boy, but it’s very hard. We have
a really pretty tree with lots of
lights. This year for Christmas,
I would like some crayons and
coloring books. I would also
like a truck and a baseball bat
like my brother, but my dad says
I’m too little for big boys bat so
maybe a plastic one and some
balls. Please don’t forget all my
family, friends and teachers at
Y Pre-school. Don’t forget my
brother, Grant cause I like playing with all of his toys.
I hope you have a safe trip.
Love, Pierson Long

Taylor’s Creek
P.S. Don’t forget my new
puppy Spice.
Dear Santa,
My name is Jackson Hogge
and I am 5 years old. I live in
Cape May, New Jersey. I have
been a good boy this year and
am so excited for your visit.
This year I have only asked for
a few things. I would like a PSP
with games and movies for my
long drives from New Jersey to
Virginia and I would also like a
WWE wrestling ring with John
Cena and any of the other figures you can bring me. I would
also like some dirt bikes and a
shovel and gloves for the snow.
Please remember, like I told
you at the mall, I will be at my
Mee Mee’s this year in Virginia
for Christmas so please come
there instead of New Jersey.
That was my biggest wish for
Christmas. Mee Mee and I are
going to make you extra cookies
since you are going to have to
come there instead. I hope that
is okay. Please also remember
to be good to my Mommy and
Daddy, my Mee Mee, Poppa
and KK, my Grandpa, Uncle
Bubba, Uncle Justin, Uncle
Shawn, Aunt Ashley, Aunt Tiffany and Aunt Paige as well as
my best buddies Trace, Berekeley and Baby Keega. Also don’t
forget my kitties, Morris and
MoJo and my favorite doggy,
Shadow. Thank you Santa. I
love you!

our stockings up all by myself,
so now we are ready for you!

Dear Santa,
My name is Britney Faith
Thomas and I live in Lancaster.
I will be 7 on December 28. I am
in the first grade. I am trying to
be good this year. I would like
a new princess Jasmine Barbie
doll, a Bratz doll, a play teacher
kit, a tree house, a Hannah Montana doll, High School Musical
DVD and my very own camera
so I can take pictures like my
Mom. I will leave you milk and
cookies. Please bring my sister
Cassie who will be 4 on December 30 some toys and don’t forget
my Mom and Dad too!
Love,
Britney
The Woolard children enjoyed breakfast with Santa at the
White Stone firehouse. From left are Rachel, Elizabeth,
Joshua and Taylor Woolard.
Dear Santa,
Hi! It’s me, Joseph Henry
George. I am now 7 and I am,
as usual, ready for Christmas
this year. It’s been a year since
we saw each other so I have
some things to tell you. I am
in second grade now and have
been pretty good, but I think it
depends on who you ask. You
can ask my grandparents....
I tried to keep my list short
but it just keeps growing so my
parents say its time to tell you
what I want because I know
when I write this I can’t change
my list anymore. Mommy says
that is too stressful for you. So
here it goes. I would like a kids
video camera, Sponge Bob
movie Atlantis Squarepants,
remote parrot that talks, Ninja
Turtle Lair set and pirate ship
with men and whatever else
you may find on your sleigh
for me. And Santa, please don’t
forget my family and friends.
They have all been there for me
and they all deserve something
very special. And Santa, daddy
wrote a list too but mommy
wouldn’t send it to you so I will
leave it on the table with your
milk and cookies.
Have a safe trip and tell
Rudolph and the others that I’ll
have their reindeer food out on
the lawn for them too.
Love,
Joseph Henry George
White Stone, Va.
Dear Santa,
I’m very excited about this
Christmas. I have a feeling
that this is going to be the best
Christmas ever. This year we
have two Christmas trees and
alot to be thankful for. I’ve
been reading your life story
called “The Autobiography of
Santa Claus, as told to by Jeff
Guinn.”
For Christmas I want to get a
silver Playstation 2 video game
system and Guitar Hero 3 legends of Rock with two guitar
controllers and Dance Dance
Revolution for my Mom. I only
want three things for Christmas
and they are Nintendo DS Lite,
Pokemon Diamond Nintendo
DS game, and Pokemon Firered
version Game Boy Advance
game. Christmas is my favorite holiday because it’s the day
that celebrates Jesus’ birthday.
I hope the world has peace and
hungry children are fed. I also
hope any war to stop going on
anywhere.
I hope you’re doing fine and
you have a safe trip on Christmas Eve!
Your grateful friend and
admirer

Dear Santa,
Hello. My name is Elijah
Wayne Dixon and I am 5 years
old. I have tried to be a good
boy this year. For Christmas I
would like a Nintendo DS and
games, Spiderman toys, and
new trucks. Please bring my
sister and me a couple of movies
too. I also need a new TV for
my room. Haley has been good
this year. She wants a new baby

but she still wants one). Please
don’t forget my little cousins,
Paige, Trenton and Hunter. I
will leave cookies for you and
carrots for Rudolph. Merry
Christmas! Tell Mrs. Claus
hello for me.

Weems, Va.
Dear Santa,
I have tried to be a very good
girl this year. That is hard to do
being 3 years old but I try my
best. I am writing to ask if you
could come to my house one
night early. My Mommy is a
nurse and has to work Christmas
morning so we are celebrating
Christmas on Christmas Eve. I
am also writing to let you know
what is on my Christmas list.
I would like a new baby doll
with a high chair and stroller.
I would also like a keyboard
and anything to do with horses.
I would love to have a real
horse but Mommy and Daddy
say I am too little this year so I
guess I will have to wait. Please
remember my cousins, Haley
and Elijah. They have tried
really hard to be good too. Say
Hi to Mrs. Claus, Rudolph and
all the other reindeer and elves.
Merry Christmas Santa!

baby brother or sister on the
way and he/she will need some
things to play with just in case
he/she arrives before Christmas.
Please don’t forget Mommy
and Daddy, I love ‘em so much.
Bring them both something
extra special for Christmas,
besides the new baby that is.
Bring lots of goodies to my
Nana and Pop Pop Ashburn,
Granny and Pop Dawson, and
my great grandparents, Ma
Dawson and Nanny and Granddaddy Hearold. Also don’t
forget my Aunt Kimmie, Uncle
Ryan and cousins JamesMichael and Braiden, Aunt
Dada, Uncle “E” and cousins
Mae-Mae and Tay Tay, Aunt
Pie, Aunt EP, my Aunt Shelly
whose husband will be spending this Christmas in Iraq and
please bring him home safely
in September, Dee Dee and
Mattie and all my great aunts
and uncles. Remember my
Grandma Diane and Grandpa
Cec in East Hampton, New
York, too!
Oh! Before I forget, could
you please leave a few toys for
my Lab Yankee and Dalmatian
Dixie, to play with and don’t
forget my cat Simon, he has
been chewing on the Christmas
ornaments. Thanks!

Love,
Your little girl
McKynzi Ryan Dawson
White Stone, Va.
P.S. We will leave some hot
chocolate under the tree to keep
you warm on your trip home.
Dear Santa,
I’ve been extra good this
year. The things I want most
for Christmas is a laptop, and
a Mio pup. I kno the elves are
working very hard this Christmas. How is Mrs. Claus doing?
How is the weather up there? I
hope it is not a foggy Christmas
Eve like on my play at school. I
hope Rudolph isn’t sick like the
one in my play at school. When
you come to my house on
Christmas Eve I hope the cookies taste good. Do you have any
old or new baby reindeer?
Love,
Julianna C. Bush
Merry Christmas!!
Hi Santa!
My name is David Ethan
Parks, but everybody calls me
Ethan. I just turned 2 years old
on December 12. My Mom and
Dad have said I am a very good
boy. I am not really asking for
much for Christmas. I would
love anything with the Wiggles
because I love watching them. I
also like Elmo and Ernie. I love
anything where I can push buttons or that plays music because
I really enjoy dancing.
I hope you have a safe trip
and I will leave cookies out
for you and carrots for your
reindeer. Also, please remember my cousins, my aunts and
uncles, and my grandparents,
and especially my Mom and
Dad. Oh, please don’t forget
my dogs Buster, Parker, Sue
and the girls. Love you Santa!

Dear Santa,
My name is Cayden Bishoff and I am 3 months old. I
don’t need a whole lot this year
because I am still so little, but I
do like to look at all the colorful pictures in books when my
Mommy reads to me, so if you
can bring me some books that
would be great! I would also
like to have an exersaucer to
play in once I can sit up better.
Mommy and Daddy would
like me to have some clothes
because I keep growing out of
everything (I like to eat a lot!).
They say that I am a wonderful
little boy and I try so hard not
to cry, except when I am tired,
which they understand because
I am just a baby. I also try to
make up for the crying by babbling, giving them lots of big,
gummy grins and blowing
bubbles, which seems to make
them laugh a lot.
Please don’t forget to visit my
buddies Mason and Brendan,
Berkeley and Keegan, Ashtyn
and Ellie, Hannah and Kaylen,
Addison, Olivia, Creston and
Ayla and Elle and Harrison,
Don’t forget any of my family
or my kitties either, because
everyone has been good this
year.
I hope you and your reindeer
have a safe trip and don’t get
too cold. Just try to be very
quiet when you come down the
chimney, because loud noises
will wake me up and it is very
hard getting me back to sleep
when I am so tired.
Love,
Cayden Bishoff
Dear Santa,
How are your reindeer doing
at the North Pole? I would like
a pink camera, a Princess bike,
a new puzzle, and a new coloring book because I don’t have
any pages left to color in my

I have two sisters Alexis and
Sarah, and a brother named
Nicholas. For the past two
years my siblings and I have
been home-schooled and for
the month of December we are
doing everyone of our subjects
with Christmas involved. For
reading we read stories such as
“The Little Drummer Boy” and
“The Origin of St. Nicholas,”
for music we sing Christmas
carols and on Friday mornings
we attend the 9 a.m. Mass at
our church. We decided this
holiday season we would get
completely involved into the
Christmas spirit. Santa, this
year my siblings and I would
love a safe, joyous holiday
season and for God to bless
all those who don’t get to
exerience Christmas with
their family.

Hi Santa,
Hi! My name is Sarah. I will
be 2 years old in January. I live
in Fleeton. Mommy tells me I’ve
been a good girl. I’m not asking
for much this year. I would like
a shopping cart to go with the
kitchen set my sister and I have. I
would also like some doll things
and I could use some new clothes.
Mommy said I am going to catch
up with my sister and I will be
wearing her clothes if I keep
growing.
Don’t forget my big sister Jessica. I love her a lot. Please don’t
forget Mommy, Daddy, Maw,
Gan, Nannie, Poppy, Uncle E,
Rachael, Aunt Sis, Uncle Spencer, Austin, Aunt Lynn and Uncle
Todd. They all deserve something
too. I almost forgot my dogs
Ginger and Fleeton. They need a
little present also.
I love you Santa! Please don’t
forget my friend Nora and all my
other friends that have moved
away that were in the playgroup.
Love, Sarah Haynie

Dear Santa,
Hi! My name is Jessica and I
live in Fleeton. I will be 4 years
old in March. I’ve been a good
girl this year. All I would like for
Christmas is a doll nursery playset
with the stroller, swing, high chair
and some clothes. Mommy said I
could really use some new clothes
because I am growing too fast. I
would also like some of the Crayola stuff too. I like to do paintings
and coloring too.
Please don’t forget my little
sister Sarah. She has been really
good. Also don’t forget my cousin
Austin. He lives in Christiansburg.
We hope to see him on Christmas
too.
Santa, please don’t forget all my
friends in Mrs. Kathy’s preschool
class. We all have been really
good at school. Also, don’t forget
Uncle Todd, Aunt Lynn, Uncle

Dear Santa,
I remember you from last
year! Yep, I had my picture
taken with you and my Mom,
and I look at it all the time. I
just turned 3 years old on Tuesday, the 18th and I am ‘ready’
for you to come to my house. I
have been a good boy really, if
you don’t count all the times I
tried to get out of my car seat,
or how I chase my cat to pull
yard. It would be awesome if
it had a playhouse attached to
it too. Please bring me some
Tonka trucks and a carpenter’s
workshop if there is room in
your sack. Santa, my Mom
works really hard so don’t
forget her or my Granddaddy
and Giggie.
Well Santa, be good to everybody. I haven’t forgotten what
Christmas is really about either.
My favorite book at Giggie’s
house is about all those animals
in the barn with Baby Jesus.
Have a good trip and be good
to all the girls and boys. Don’t
forget my cousins in Louisiana,
Connecticut and Northern Virginia. Also, remember my little
cousin Addison.

Dear Santa,
I am a new little boy on
your list this year. I am only
7 months old so there isn’t
much on my list. Maybe a few
little toys for a little boy my
age. I like ones that have tags
on them. Please don’t forget
my big sister Riley. She may
play a little rough with me
but I love her very much.
Mommy and Riley are busy
baking cookies so we will
leave some out for you. Also
Santa, please remember those
who are less fortunate than we
are and bring them something
special.
Merry Christmas!

Dear Santa,
I only have a couple of
things on my list this year. I
would like a Nintendo DS,
boom box and a Holiday
Barbie. I am trying very hard
to be good but some days
I have a little trouble with
that. I have a new brother this
year so please bring a little
surprise for him as well. He
seems to like the tags on his
toys more than the toy. Also,
Santa please remember those
boys and girls whose Mom
and Dad are in the service.
I think they need something
extra special t his year.
We will leave you some
milk and cookies on the coffee
table. Have a safe trip Santa!

are very excited about Christmas and cannot wait until you
come! As you know Santa, we
have tried to be good this year,
but sometimes it’s just not that
easy.
This Christmas we want
everything we see but we
know to be grateful for what
you bring. As for Cole, I want
ANYTHING that has to do
with wrestling. My list includes
the “Money in the Bank” wrestling ring; Johnny Nitro, William Regeal, Jeff Hardy and
Edge wrestling figures and
Edge’s belt; the 2008 WWE vs
Raw Play Station 2 game; and
anything else you think would
be cool. As for me Jackson,
although my brother chooses
to wrestle me, I am more
interested in Power Rangers. I
would love to have the Power
Rangers robot and any other
Power Ranger things you think
I might like. I also would love
to have anything that has to
do with coloring and drawing
because those are fun too.

hard on listening and not fighting with each other from now
until Christmas, although that
usually lasts about a minute.
Before we go Santa, we do
ask that you please remember
Nana and Papa, Nana Anne
and Big Pop, Grandpa Chris,
Uncle Scott, Laura, Bradley,
Sydney, Lyndsey, Kassidy and
Colton, and Uncle Matt, Aunt
Hope, Taylor and Tori. We
also want to know if you could
please bring something really
special to Grandma Lois,
Grandma Fannie, Grandma
Julie and Polly, because they
love us so much all year. We
know our list seems long, but
we can’t forget Uncle Ronnie,
Jess, Jason, Hannah, Kelsey,
Brian, Ashley, Austin, MelMel, CD, Kennzie, Moggi
and Poppie, Rudy, Dan and
Elizabeth, Mrs. Gordon, Mrs.
Elbourn, Mrs. Campbell and
all our classmates, the rest of
our family and all our friends.
We are very lucky and blessed

special people in this world
that love us and we just have
to make sure you remember to

you come on Christmas Eve.
We can’t wait for you to

sure to share your treats with

Dear Santa,
I am so excited about you
coming to our house! I have
been a very good girl this
year. For Christmas I would
like some new books, playdough, and a helmet. My
mom and dad say I need a
helmet to ride a bike or a
pony. I would also like you
to bring me a kitchen and
maybe some food to go with
it. My brother and I also love
to play with pots and pans
so that would be great, too.
I get to start school soon so
some new play clothes would
be appreciated. Please don’t
forget my brother, Alex.
Even though he bugs me
sometimes he should still get
one present. Also, my cousin
Ria has been especially good
so please don’t forget about
her, either. Thank you Santa

Dear Santa,
This year I have been a very
good boy. I just found out
that you might be bringing
some presents our way and
I am very excited. I would
really like some new toys as
I always have to play with
my sister’s stuff. I really like
trucks so maybe you could fit
one of those in your sleigh.
Also, I could use some new
clothes as mine are getting
kind of tight. I really like
picture books, too. My sister
Ella has been a good girl, too,
so if you could bring her one
present that would be great. I
hope you can find our house.
We put a lot of lights on it so
you can see it! We will have
some milk and cookies set
out for you and some carrots
for your reindeer. Thank you,
Santa, and Merry Christmas!

Are the reindeer sick? I hope

A couple of years ago I think I
saw Rudolph’s nose at night.
For Christmas this year, I
don’t have a lot of things to ask
for. But the two or three I can
think of are: a Nintendo DS
Dogz game, snow boots that fit,
a Train and Play Rescued Pet,
and a Littlest Pet Shop Paws

We are going to have some
cookies out for you and maybe
some carrots for the reindeer.
Have a safe trip and don’t forget

Letters to Santa
Rappahannock Record • Kilmarnock, VA • December 20, 2007 • D13
Dear Santa,
My name is Andrew Hill and I
am almost 3 years old. This year I
have gotten good at playing basketball, so mom says I am ready
for a goal to shoot my hoops. I
am only 3 feet tall so I don’t need
a big one yet. My sister, Audras
and I would like a monster truck.
It needs to go really fast. I want a
dirt bike, but mom and dad say I
have to learn to ride my bicycle
with no training wheels. I will
work on that real hard this year.
Maybe you could get your elves
to start on my blue dirt bike for
next year. Mom says she is going
to make me some cookies on
Christmas Eve so I will try to
leave you a few.
Your sweet boy,
Andrew Hill
Kilmarnock, Va.
Dear Santa,
I am in the first grade this year
and I have been a very good student.
Please bring me a new dirt bike

game and a clock radio. You can
bring me some new clothes and
new shoes and a dirt bike lamp.
I would like to have a new
Game Boy DS and an I-Pod too.
My little sister, Karla has been
a good girl this year so bring her
some good stuff too. Please be
good to my teacher and friends

a snack to help you get through
the night and some fresh water
for the reindeer.

it’s hard because, like I said, I’m

of space for you to leave presents!
My mommy and I sat down
to make a list of what I want
for Christmas. There are some
things she said I could have and
some I can’t have. I think you
should decide. I want a motorcycle, gun, bow and arrow, Christmas 3-wheeler, Sponge Bob
stuff, pillow, tennis shoes, and a
light. I don’t know why everybody laughed at my list. Mom
says I’ll never get a motorcycle
so I’m going to ask my dad.
Please be careful on your
trip and I wanted to tell you to
be sure to come to our house at
night because the hunters aren’t
allowed to hunt after dark. The
reindeer will be safe!
Thanks Santa!

Dear Santa,
Hello again! My name is
Amber Elizabeth Davis and I
am 8 years old.
I am trying to be a good girl
this year. Trying!
For Christmas this year I
would like a Wii and some
games, a real scooter, a money
jar (to count all my change),
and a world map. Oh, and a
case for my DVD player, a CD
player with the High School
Musical CD and last, clothes.
And don’t forget my pop pop.
I will leave you some cookies and milk. And the reindeer
some carrots. See you soon!!!
Love,
Amber Davis
Kilmarnock, Va.
P.S. Please remember to
bring Princess something to
chew on.
Happy Holidays
