Kite flying with grandchildren, the first dway of spring, Spring Break with the family on the ski slopes or the beaches of Mexico, the return to Heritage Eagle Bend after wintering in warm weather - these are just some of the pleasant thoughts that March brings. It is a time of year when we begin to look forward to being out-of-doors, flowers, leaves on trees, maybe not in March but soon to come! Looking forward is a major responsibility of your Board of Directors. Regular review of HEB’s Vision and Mission Statements helps direct us. Our vision statement reads: Heritage Eagle Bend will be recognized as a premier age restricted community in Colorado. The mission statement is this: Preserve and enhance the value of our community by operating and maintaining our common elements and offering services to standards that support our vision. We did win the “AgeRestricted Community of the Year” award in 2014 but soon the competition will grow. We need to be ready. Given the development of the land to our south, we must be prepared. If you would like read about Inspiration Colorado, you will find almost anything you would like to know by going to: http://insiderealestatenews.com/2015/02/03/inspirationcolorado-coming-to-dougco/ A quote I recently heard related to this article is that “HEB homes may be old in comparison but nothing can beat the community: beautiful, fun, friendly, established.” Soon you will begin to see a variety of repairs around the neighborhood based upon the Reserve Study. The Facilities and Grounds Committee and the Finance Advisory Committee will meet together to consider and recommend completion on the projects presented by staff. Keep thinking forward! Spring is just around the corner. At this time in our history, we are faced with two diametrically opposed situations and I believe that you know well what they are. The first is the dark cloud of the litigation against Lennar, which continuously colors our discussions and our decisions. As we prepare for trial, we are fully aware that costs will be high, preparing for the Court. Our work, simply stated, is not finished and will not be until we have received from Lennar what is due. Our case is strong. On the other hand, we want to look forward to the future of HEB and continue to work toward maintaining recognition as a premier age-restricted community. In order to fulfill our duty to this vision and in order to preserve and enhance the value of our community, we must think big and dream. If we don’t we aren’t fulfilling our responsibility to the mission and vision. Back in 2007 and 2008, residents were thinking big and had accepted the fact that our clubhouse was not adequate for all it needs to be and to provide. A study was undertaken that had excellent solutions for expansion and the study was embraced by the community. But then, as we all know, the bottom fell out of the economy and the bottom fell out of the embrace the community held for the expansion. It is now eight years later and the needs we had in 2007 have not changed. Vision 2020 brought current many of the same concerns. What can we do? We can appoint a team to continue the work begun by Vision 2020 and call it our Strategic Planning Group. I have asked two residents to serve, two who have the ability to think big and dream. Not everyone possesses this ability. Do you have it? Would you like to work on the future of HEB? We won’t be DOING anything soon but we will be PLANNING so that when the day comes, we are ready. I listed several of the topics of discussion in my article in the January Newsletter. 4 DELEGATE MEETINGS *All Meetings Start at 6:30p.m. Wednesday March 11 Delegate Meeting / Election Directions Monday April 20 Delegate Meeting / Welcome to Term Thursday August 20 Delegate Meeting Thursday October 8 Budget Presentation / Meeting Tuesday November 17 Budget Ratification Meeting BOARD ROOM 2015 HEB Master Board Election by Bridget Sebern The official 2015 Election Day is Monday, April 20th. All votes must be cast online or received as postal mail at Vote-Now’s office by 5 PM Eastern Daylight Time (3 PM Mountain Daylight time). There are three (3) vacancies on the HEB Master Board, each carrying a three year term. An eligible voter must be a resident and a homeowner of HEB. The voter’s HOA account must be in good standing and must be current as of April 10, 2015. An account is considered in good standing when there are no past due HOA fees, special assessments, or fines imposed by the HOA. Eligible voters who do not have internet access at their residence can vote using the computers at the clubhouse or a public library. Voters who cannot or do not wish to use the electronic system can request a paper ballot mailed to their address on record. Master Board of Director Election Schedule submitted by Bridget Sebern ◀ B eginning with the 2012 HEB MAB election, our association has used an electronic voting system provided by Vote-Now. Simply put, it reduces the expenses associated with preparing and mailing traditional paper ballots and streamlines the election process, including the vote count. SCHEDULE TUESDAY, APRIL 7 Paper ballots mail to eligible resident of HEB who are not using electronic voting WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8 6:30 PM Candidate Forum in the clubhouse TUESDAY, APRIL 14 6:30 PM Candidate Forum in the clubhouse FRIDAY, APRIL 17-20 Electronic Voting Period MONDAY, APRIL 20 Election Day – Results Published FRIDAY, MAY 1 New Board of Directors term begins Online voters receive an e-mail invitation in their designated e-mail account. When the link will look out for the future of the association, is clicked, the ballot automatically loads in a browser contact Bridget at 720-235-1826. window. Clicking a candidate’s name will show her/his biography. A verification screen shows the candidates chosen and an alert about any races in which no votes were cast. Voters can return to the ballot to make changes if necessary and submit their vote. A Vote-Now staff member acts as election administrator. Paper ballots will be mailed by Vote-Now to voters who have not registered to vote electronically. These voters will be required to send their ballots to Vote-Now via postal mail at their own expense. Making a copy of the paper ballot is recommended in case the original is mismarked or misplaced. A message is included in the directions on the paper ballot specifying that if a ballot is cast electronically, the paper ballot will not be counted if it is mailed. When the paper ballots are received by Vote-Now, the election administrator will enter the voter’s security code from the paper ballot and casts the vote by entering the code into the Vote-Now computer. The tallies are automatically made by the software, combining both paper and electronic votes. If the security code has already been used by the voter, the administrator will be notified and the voter will not be able to cast a vote a second time. All votes must be cast online or received as postal mail at Vote-Now’s office by 5 PM Eastern Daylight Time (3 PM Mountain Daylight time) on April 20, 2015. 5 BOARD ROOM Village Voice by Valerie Ness W e have come to the close of another successful year. The Board, through proper planning and wise investing, has been able to stay within the budget. Our dues did increase $5 per month which is a minimal increase due to the insurance issues we had last year. Time to start thinking about our election of Board of Directors in April. Jeff Uscier and Gene Mueller will NOT run for re-election, however. If you have any interest in becoming a Director, please contact Wendy Stofa, Community Operations Manager. As a Board of Director you will represent all of the Village Homeowners. We encourage representation from all Districts that encompass the Village Homes. The Village Board meets monthly and may call for work sessions when needed. Having access to e-mail is required for all applicants as well as the ability to attend various board meetings such as the HOA and other special meetings held at the Clubhouse. Please contact Wendy (or Any Board Member) to get the proper paperwork. Landscaping This is a slow time of the year for landscape activities, however there are a few things going on. The landscape contractor will be, if they haven’t all ready been, around your home cleaning up leaves and debris. They have also been doing a winter trim on shrubs including grass type shrubs. The schedule on this work depends on the weather. Roofs We have replaced the roofs on two of five buildings since the first of the year. These buildings were only patched a couple of years ago and definitely needed attention. Snow Removal Nothing new to report, snow removal is going on as needed. Our Contractor (HEB Landscaping) is doing a GREAT job of snow removal when necessary. Preventive Maintenance Activities have come to a standstill during the winter months. We do get a Hotline call every now and then reporting something for us to look at. One reminder is to make sure your outside garden hose is disconnected from the outdoor water faucet. Also per Xcel Energy do not allow snow to pile up around the gas meter. Go out and remove the snow from around the meter if needed. Hotline 303.343.4011 What is the Hotline? The hotline is a telephone line with 2 mail boxes that are used by Traditions and Village residents for reporting problems. When you call the Hotline you will leave a message describing the problem along with your name, address and telephone #. Personnel in the Administration office monitor the hotline multiple times during the day. They listen to the message and if needed send an email to the appropriate Village Board Member for resolution. We try to get back to the resident who called in 6 ESTATE SALES ETC. Please remember that Craft Fairs and Garage Sales at your home are not allowed in the community. We do allow Estate Sales with approval which requires a form to be completed in the Admin Building. Estate Sales require three weeks notice and all items need to be contained in your home with nothing on the driveway. They are limited to Saturday only from 9am – 4pm. No signs are allowed in the community and the gate code should never be printed on a sign. Thank you. HEB'S EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE, in coordination with the Aurora Office of Emergency Management, is pleased to announce a new round of CPR/AED training courses. The first running will take place in the HEB clubhouse Humbolt Room on March 21, 2015, from 9 am to 1 pm. Other runnings of this important training will take place in June, September, and December, as outlined in the attached flyer. Cost: $6.00 CASH, payable at the start of the training class. either the same day as the call or the next day. All calls are returned. This is the Village Board of Directors only method of communicating problems to the Village Association. Snowline 303.343.3063 What is the snowline? The snow line is a telephone number that contains a voice mail announcement. Residents can call this number and listen to the announcement to get an update on snow push activities during a snow storm. This announcement is updated before the push begins, during the push, and until completion of snow push activities. You cannot leave a message on the snowline. Listen only. But how do the more than 65 million Americans who live in homeowners associations and condominium communities feel about their own homeowners associations and condominium communities? Are they happy with their elected boards? How do they feel about the rules? The Foundation for Community Association Research, an affiliate of Community Associations Institute (CAI), sponsored a recent national public opinion survey to answer these and other questions. Here are some of the key findings: • 90% of residents rate their overall community association experience as positive (64%) or neutral (26%). • 90% of residents say association board members “absolutely” or “for the most part” serve the best interests of their communities. • 83% say they get along well with their immediate neighbors. • 92% say they are on friendly terms with their association board members. • 83% of residents say their community managers provide value and support to residents and their associations. • 88% of residents who had direct contact with their community manager say it was a positive experience. • 70% of residents say their association’s rules protect and enhance property value; only 4% say the rules harm property values. We’d like to think that we would do even better than the national averages, so tell us what you think we can do to make our community an even better place to live. We encourage you to get involved, so let us know how you can help. Active and engaged residents are the way to build a true sense of community. If you’re especially pleased about our community, share that too! It’s always good to know we’re on the right track. You can contact us by sending an e-mail or calling the manager or a board member. We look forward to hearing from you. More national survey results, which include comparative data from similar surveys in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2014, are available at http://www.caionline.org/2014survey. 8 Announcement and Invitation to HEB Residents Carol Ambrose, President - Heritage Gun Club A ll HEB residents are invited to attend a presentation on Islam and the potential danger of new acts of extremist Islamic violence directed against our country. The presentation is sponsored by the Heritage Gun Club and will be held in the Antero room, Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am. The club has invited Joe Bagi, a businessman, entrepreneur and community activist speaking on behalf of the South East Chapter of ACT for America, a group which conducts seminars to educate Americans about radical Islam and groups like ISIS. Mr. Bagi is a Christian, born in Lebanon, and who came to America in 2002. He grew up on the “green line” that separated Christian Beirut from Muslim Beirut where he witnessed first-hand the atrocities of extremist Islam. To date Joe has conducted more than 216 educational seminars for Churches and organizations and political parties. The presentation is expected to take about an hour, and Mr. Bagi will take questions from the club members and HEB attendees. THE HEB GARAGE SALE IS COMING... The above cartoon describes how a beginner pickleball player feels when playing for the first time. We have all been there! Whether it is golf, tennis, or bocce ball, we all go through that “learning curve”. Pickleball is no exception. Pickleball is often described as a mixture of ping pong, tennis, and badminton. No wonder we are confused when we first play pickleball! We play with paddles that are composite, graphite, or aluminum. Our balls are the wiffleballs we knew as kids. The court is the size of a badminton court and the net is almost the same as a regulation tennis net. And the rules require the ball to bounce twice before volleying and you can’t go into the “kitchen” unless the ball bounces there. If the above sport sounds like something you would like to try, we are here to help you learn. This is our third full season at HEB. We have over 100 members in our club. We are eagerly anticipating our 3 new standalone courts this spring. No more confusing lines, no more hazards to avoid. We will continue to play through the winter when the courts are dry. Please contact us about our newsletter for dates & times. Parker Fieldhouse is also available Monday through Friday from 8AM-NOON until Memorial Day. Contact: Ron & Joyce Riedesel @303.693.7667 or [email protected] for more information. Ladies and gentlemen of HEB you are invited to a billiard party! The Billiard Club is sponsoring a Get Acquainted with Playing 8 and 9 Ball Party. We will have two sessions in March (details below) that will include reviewing the rules for 8 and 9 ball and then demonstrations of the basics of playing these games. We are offering the two identical sessions to accommodate busy schedules. Each event will include a social time with refreshments. The two events are on: Sunday, March 15th at 2 PM – Meet in the Billiard Room Monday, March 23rd at 6 PM – Meet in the Billiard Room These events are open to all HEB residents. It is an opportunity to see if this sport could be a good fit for you. You don’t even have to buy any equipment to participate because the tables and equipment are there for our enjoyment. Billiards is a great indoor sport you can enjoy while waiting for the weather to warm up for the outdoor sport time. You will have the opportunity to join the Billiard Club at this event. Men and women who like a variety of genre are invited to join in book discussions. All are welcome. March 19 The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier. In this book a young English Quaker girl is trapped between duty and conscience in 1850’s Ohio. Chevalier’s research is meticulous, she handles the intersection of two stories – those of pioneering Quakers and escaping slaves – with verve, imagination and, above all, compassion. The characters are well-drawn, credible and the local color richly detailed. Honor Bright leaves her English family to accompany her sister to America, thinking she can always return to England, but realizing that her life may take drastic turns. The Last Runaway thus opens with its underlying premise that our choices require actions, which may come at personal cost. As simple and plain as a Quaker bonnet, but, like a Quaker soul, it contains a hidden light. Fiction. April 16 People of the Book: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks. One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it yields clues to its guardians and whereabouts: an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers experience crucial moments in the book’s history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk everything in the name of protecting this treasure. Fiction. May 14 The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore. The author is a prominent black man who did an internship working with Condoleezza Rice, was a Rhodes Scholar, a soldier in Afghanistan, etc. In the same paper that announced his being appointed as a Rhodes Scholar, was the story of another young black man accused of murder in a violent robbery. The two are both named Wes Moore. Several years later, the author contacted the convict and found that their early lives were similar, both grew up without fathers (for different reasons) both did poorly in school, were from poor families living in undesirable neighborhoods, and both had run-ins with the police. The author explores why their lives turned out so differently. Non Fiction. June 18 The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin. This book takes us behind the scenes and into the heart of the woman who loved and married Charles Lindbergh. Set at a time when the nation was hungry for heroes, this novel gives us an intimate examination of the life and emotional mettle of Anne Morrow, the daughter of a wealthy banker-turned diplomat. Being shy, she easily conforms to the day’s norm and subsumes her life into Charles’ grander, heroic priorities. The bulk of the novel shows scenes from their past. Anne recounts learning to fly and navigating and charting new routes around the world. The story also details the tragedy that spotlights Anne as a mother and compels a nation to mourn, while both parents grieve in incompatible ways over the kidnapping of their son. There are glimpses of Amelia Earhart, Joseph Kennedy, Henry Ford, Adolf Hitler and an amusing visit with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Historical Fiction. July 16 The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel by Diane Setterfield. Settle down to enjoy a rousing good ghost story. The author has rejuvenated the genre with this closely plotted, clever foray into a world of secrets, confused identities, lies and half-truths. There are two heroines: Vida Winter, a famous author, whose life story is coming to an end, and Margaret Lea, a young girl who gets wrapped up in a dark, haunted ruin of a house, which guards family secrets that are not hers and that she must discover at her peril. Viva has been confounding her biographer and fans for years by giving everybody a different version of her life. Because of a biography that Margaret has written about brothers, Vida chooses Margaret to tell her story, all of it, for the first time. Fiction. August 13 The Secret Keeper: A Novel by Kate Morton. Laurel Nicholson is a teenager when she witnesses a shocking crime: her gentle, kind mother, Dorothy, kills a man. It becomes a family secret that Laurel never divulges or tries to fathom until five decades later, when Dorothy is on her deathbed, and Laurel finds a photograph of her mother with an old friend, Vivien. As Laurel begins to dig, the narrative shifts between characters. Both reader and Laurel breathlessly hurtle into an astounding family secret that unfolds slowly and temptingly. Fiction September 17 The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani Rainbows and Puddles by Corky Thompson October 15 November 19 TBD 17 COMMUNITY INFORMATION 9 Health Fair at HEB AWARENESS + PARTICIPATION = PREVENTION The Heritage Eagle Bend 9 Health Fair is scheduled for Saturday morning April 25, 2015 at the Clubhouse from 7:00am to 12:00pm. She does wonderful quilting and fabric art as well as lovely watercolor paintings. Please view her art work on the upper shelves of the west wall of the HEB Library. Elaine tells her story… Due to the relocation of all persons of Japanese ancestry during WWII, I was brought by my parents at the age of one from Los Angeles, to my mother’s family home in Brighton, CO. My mother was a native Coloradoan, having been born near Platteville, CO. She had been living in CA briefly, where she met and married my father. My father was a Nisei (second generation), born in Honomu, Hawaii. I have been in Colorado for all but the first year of my life, so I consider myself a native Coloradoan. I attended elementary, junior high and high school in the Denver Public School system, where I received a very good education. I attended Denver University, graduating with a double major in elementary education and speech pathology. I also earned a Master’s degree through Denver University. I was hired by the Denver Public Schools as a first grade teacher directly after college. I taught first grade for 33 years in four different schools in Denver. For about half of my career, I was the designated bilingual/ESL teacher in my schools, which meant that any non-English speaking child was placed in my classroom. I have taught children from Holland, Germany, Pakistan, China, Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Mexico and Japan, as well as English speaking children. My job was to teach these first graders to speak, read and write in English in addition to basic curriculum subjects. In 1984, I was given the Distinguished Teacher’s Award from the Denver Public Schools. I’m married to Ted Tsumura. We celebrated our fiftieth in 2013. Ted was also a teacher in Denver and Cherry Creek Districts for 35 years and he was recognized state-wide and nationally many times for his teaching excellence. We have one son, Kurt, who is a dentist in Midtown Denver. We have two grandchildren, Bruce and Ariana, who are the delight of our retirement years. When I retired, Ted bought a state of the art sewing/ embroidery machine for me. I took a few classes in quilting and have been continuing to make quilts ever since. Each year, I make a large quilt for a raffle drawing for Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of key women educators. The average amount collected from the quilt raffle is about $400, which is then donated to the DKG UNICEF project. Some of the UNICEF projects have been to help teacher development in Afghanistan or to provide classroom materials in Africa and Mexico. To date, I have donated 14 of these large quilts to DKG. My sister and I also make and donate lap quilts for senior members of our church who are shut-ins or in assisted living or nursing homes. In the past two years, we have made over 20 lap quilts and a number of bags to hang on walkers. Ted & I moved to HEB in August, 2001. I decided to take the watercolor class offered by Paul Valdez at the clubhouse. Paul is a gifted artist and a very good teacher for those of us who are struggling to paint in the water color medium. I have enjoyed learning to paint and Paul is a very patient teacher. In addition to beginners like me, there are others in the class who are extremely talented and some who have painted for a number of years, but Paul is able to meet all of our needs. Thanks to Paul, I have some work that I can hang up in my home. I am so glad that I took the first step in signing up for the class, which was initially titled, “Do Not Be Afraid of Water Color.” We are always looking for HEB Artists who would like to show their work in the Library. If you are interested, please contact Audrey Ledgerwood, [email protected], 303.861.0880. We would like to feature as many artists as possible in the upcoming months. 19 2015 HEB BRONCOS HAZEL MILLER POWER TO PICKLEBALL! Appropriate handicap adjustment will apply. ALL COMMUNITY GOLF KICK-OFF EVENT WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4 Ladies’ 9-Hole Golf League and Exchange Play by Mary Galvin Would you like to join a Ladies’ golf league, but don’t always have enough time? Join us on Thursday mornings for 9 holes of golf. HEB Men’s Golf Association by Ron Sharp I t’s hard to believe, but we’re almost through the winter and our MGA begins next month on April 15th. We will jump start the new year this month on Wednesday, March 4th between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. This will be your opportunity to meet at the club house and sign up for all the golf events to include the MGA. Dillon Joslyn, our assistant golf pro has sent an application to all current MGA members to fill out before you arrive which will save you a great deal of time. I hope to see all of you there where we can also have a beer, a snack and hear all the golf stories from last year. As I mentioned in this column last month, the fees are the same as last year with the exception of the $1.00 you asked to be added to the hole-in-one pot every year. The social membership for the year is $112.00 plus $8.00 each time you play. The Eagle membership is $182.00 and you may nothing each week that you play. Remember, if you play more than 9 times (there are 19 payout games) you will be money ahead by signing up for the Eagle membership. You can pay by check or cash. Sorry, no credit cards. You may have noticed in Dillon’s application he sent out that you are being asked to sign a statement that you understand disciplinary action may be taken under circumstances that are a detriment to the MGA. You will remember during our last game in 2014 one of our members struck another member. While this has never happened before we want to ensure the safety of our membership. During our spring meeting I will be presenting to the general membership an addition to our by-laws that will be voted on. Many of our membership have expressed a need for action that can be taken by the MGA in addition to what the MBOD can do. This is primarily the suspension from MGA for a set period of time up to and including permanently. The action would be taken after an investigation by the HEB pro staff and management. If you can’t make it on March 4th, you can sign up anytime in the pro shop. I know we have a number of new residents and some have inquired about the MGA. We certainly invite any new or current residents to join with us for a great summer of golf. We have members with handicaps from 5 to 30 plus. In addition to golf it is a great way to meet your neighbors who enjoy golf and socializing. If any of you have questions please feel free to contact our pro shop or you can call me at (720) 479-8414. As in past years, we will again be participating in our fun “Golf Exchanges” throughout the season – with Meadow Hills, Spring Valley, Aurora Hills, Red Hawk Ridge and Lone Tree. For the 2015 season, we will be making some changes to the League. Watch for the coming details. 22 We look forward to seeing you at the All Community Kick-Off Golf Event on Wednesday, March 4th, at the Clubhouse! SPORTS CORNER Ladies’ 18-Hole Golf League by Sharyl Harston, President T he All Community Golf Kick-Off and Sign-Up Event is the evening of Wednesday, March 4’”. Several members of the HEB Ladies’ 18-Hole Golf League will be present at our sign-up table to welcome new and returning golfers to our League. Our League’s membership is open to HEB resident women who have, or will establish, a USGA GHIN handicap index at a maximum of 50. We play shotgun start golf Tuesday mornings May through September. We are unique in that we play a more casual game of golf as we are not organized in handicapped flights, and we do not compete for prizes/money based on our golf scores. We do, however, post all scores to support our GHIN handicap index, play by the USGA rules, practice proper golf etiquette and respect the course standard for pace of play. Members sign up in the Pro Shop by Sunday evening for Tuesday play and pairings are sent out electronically on Mondays. Members have the opportunity to pay $3 to voluntarily participate (and hopefully win some money) in a fun game every other week of the season. We have an annual Member/ Guest Day followed by a luncheon. We have a “ringer” program where we track each player’s best score by hole throughout the season - at our fall luncheon players receive a “ringer handicap” showing them the potential of playing their best game. The annual dues for the League are $95 which covers membership in CWGA, your GHIN fee, a summer and winter social event, and a handbook with a member roster, a schedule of play dates and events,League procedures and protocols, and the League’s by-laws. Members pay separately for a Spring Kickoff the Season and a Fall End of Season Luncheon. Underlying all, is our commitment to improving our golf game, while making golf fun and making good friends, on the course, at lunch after golf, and at our social events. If the HEB Ladies 18-Hole Golf League appears to be a fit for you, plan on signing up on March 4th. If you want to join the League but will not be able to attend the March 4’” event, please contact Membership Chair Lori Foglia at 303-791-9295 and she will coordinate your sign up. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Sharyl Harston at 303-333-7621. Golf Clubs, Leagues and Handicaps submitted by The Handicap Committee - Dick Prahl, John Tesmer, Fred Clift, Dean Arkema, Dick Ebdon, and Billie Dahlbach I t’s good to see the month of March again as it starts the golfing season in Colorado and HEB. The winter inactive period that began November 15th is over on March 14th and residents with current GHIN handicaps can start posting their rounds on this date. An easy way to become a member of the Colorado USGA handicap system (GHIN), is to join one of many leagues offered at HEB. You can learn about these league opportunities during the March 4th Back to Golf Night sign ups held in the clubhouse from 5-7pm. All of the leagues of HEB will be present to answer any questions and offer a summer of golfing fun! You can also establish a new individual HEB GHIN or renew your previous year’s membership. Annually residents ask why they need to join the Colorado GHIN handicap system. The GHIN handicapping system is intended to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The GHIN system provides the player with a fair course handicap regardless of ability, and adjusts the players handicap index up or down based on how the player’s game changes. Also, by being a member of HEB’s handicap system, the pro shop has the ability to upload your handicap index automatically rather than manually searching and verifying individual handicaps. This saves time, money, and is more accurate. Come join over 180 women and 300 men already registered as members of the Colorado USGA Handicap System at Heritage Eagle Bend! HEB Women’s Golf Association by Jan Sarahs W ow! It’s March already, and I think that we are all anticipating the 2015 golf season and green grass ahead! Remember the date of March 4 to register for all of the 2015 golf leagues. At that time tables will be set up in the Antero Room with members from each of the different leagues who are available to answer any questions you might have. You will be able to fill out forms to join the league, or you may request forms from our president, Jan Place. We play every Tuesday morning with a shotgun start. You will need to sign up each week in the Pro Shop. Sign-up sheets are in the women’s binder located at the desk of the Pro Shop. We have many fun activities each year including a get-acquainted luncheon and a member-guest tournament which will be a one or a two day event, depending upon which you choose to enter. We look forward to welcoming you on March 4 and assisting you with the sign up process. 23 COMMUNITY INFORMATION Spring Cleaning Begins in the Garden by Karen Brown- Busy Bloomers Garden Club M arch has finally arrived and with it are the thoughts of gardening again. If you are like I am, you are starved for color and are avidly looking forward to those beautiful and bountiful plant sales. I could spend a whole day just walking up and down the isles, envisioning where each and every plant will go in my yard. Of course, I’d need about 5 acres to plant them all. And an army to help me do it. However, as we Coloradans know, March is way to soon to start planting most plants, but there is still much we can do. • Our spring bulbs should start peeking out of the ground, so now is a good time to feed them with a well balanced fertilizer. Remember to lightly till it into the soil because the phosphorus and potassium are not effective unless it’s worked into the soil. • It’s a great time to start annual and vegetable seeds indoors. In late March, we can sow cool weather plants such as peas, sweet peas, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, kale, onion sets, cauliflower, radicchio, spinach, carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, and Swiss chard outdoors. Our last frost date is usually around May 15, so this will give us time to harden them off. • On days when the soil and air temperatures are above 40 degrees F water your trees, lawns and perennials if we have not received any measurable moisture. • In late March or early April remove the wrap from trees. Be sure to remove any tape that was securing the wrap to the trees to avoid damaging the trunk as the trees grow. • Also in late March, before new growth begins, prune summer-blooming shrubs, those that bloom on the current season’s growth. Examples are Blue Mist Spirea, summer-blooming Spirea, Butterfly Bush. • Buy and plant bare-root roses in late March or early April, storing in a cool location until planting. • Cut back perennials and grasses that were not cut back in the fall. • Add mulch to perennial beds. • Buy and plant bare-root roses in late March or early April, storing in a cool location until planting. • At the end of March, plant tomato plants in the garden using a “wall o’water”. This will protect them from the freezes. • Fertilize potted plants that were over-wintered indoors. • Repot root-bound houseplants. The Busy Bloomers Garden Club meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at 10 a.m in the craftroom. This month we will be having a lecture on landscaping with emphasis on hardscape,(lighting, footpaths, rocks and boulders, etc). Please come and join in our fun. We will have a social lunch at the clubhouse afterwards where you can meet and make new friends. 24 Did You Know? by Wendy Stofa - Assistant Community Manager P lease contact me for New Homeowner Orientation. All new residents are required to come and get registered in order to obtain HEB ID’s etc. 720-235-1831. All dogs need to be on a leash and please pick up after them. Dogs should not be running loose on the golf course, in the community or in the open spaces. Reminder to make sure that your light bulbs are working in your lamppost and in your garage lights. Any lamppost light in the community may be reported to the Welcome Desk for the Lamp Lighter volunteers to replace. Garage lights in Tradition and Village homes can also be replaced by the Lamp Lighters. Single family homes are responsible for their own garage lights. Call Welcome Desk at 303-693-7788. Trash and recycle containers should be stored in your garage and not outside. As spring is approaching, please remember that most outdoor projects or additions to your yard etc. need to be submitted to the Architectural Advisory Committee. Please call me with questions before you start a project. The AAC has 45 days to review your project but tries to complete review in a couple of weeks. Please keep this in mind when you are planning your spring projects! Please keep your garage door closed. This is both for safety issues and to keep our community looking great! Have a group of more than 13 for lunch or dinner here at the Club? Please call Jenna Broce, our Director of Catering at 720-235-1823. That way we can keep the Eagle’s Nest available for open seating! COMMUNITY INFORMATION Slow Down! Our Lives Matter!!! submitted by Bridget Sebern I f you speed on our residential streets, you are putting our lives at risk. Take a moment to realize what an accident would do to your life and the lives that you put in danger by speeding. ASK YOURSELF – IS IT WORTH IT? FAST FACTS: • Speeding in residential neighborhoods represents the single greatest complaint issue to police departments and city council representatives throughout the U.S. (KKAD25) • Based on the “General Estimates System” database of police-reported accidents, incapacitating pedestrian injuries rose from 18.2 percent in 25 mile-per-hour zones to 23.4 percent in 30 mile-per-hour zones. Pedestrian fatalities spiked respectively from 1.8 percent to 5.4 percent. This fatality rate represents a 3-fold increase just for that 5-mph increase. This is significant, especially if your family member or neighbor is injured or killed. • Crash rates increase faster with an increase in speed on minor roads (which includes residential streets) than major roads. (NHTSA) • The death rate per million miles driven on residential streets is almost over 2 times the death rate on highways. (NHTSA) • Speeding Triples the Odds of Crashing (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety) • It is not unusual for speeders to be clocked in excess of 40 mph (and even 50 mph on occasion) in 25-mph zones. (KKAD25) • Speeding extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle. *At 20 mph the total stopping distance needed is 69 feet. *At 30 mph, the distance needed is 123 feet. *At 40 mph, the distance needed is 189 feet which may not be enough distance and time for you to avoid hitting an object or person on the road (USDOT, NHSTA) • If you hit a pedestrian: *At 20 mph 5% will die *At 30 mph 45% will die *At 40 mph 85% will die • Speed, defined as exceeding the posted speed limit or traveling too fast for the conditions, is cited as a contributing factor in approximately 30% of fatal crashes.
