2010 DUTCH MASON BLUES FESTIVAL
2011
DUTCH MASON BLUES FESTIVAL
Weekend to feature artists from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival
The Dutch Mason Blues Festival is proud to present another incredible line up of artists for this year's 7th
annual summer event. Joining the festival’s official international ambassador, Blues legend
JAMES COTTON, are Grammy award winning artists LOS LONELY BOYS, ROBERT RANDOLPH,
GARY CLARK JR., ROBBEN FORD, MICHAEL LANDAU, SONNY LANDRETH,
LUKAS NELSON, JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR and more!
Debuting in 2003 with a multi-chart gold single, selling millions of albums, racking up reams of critical
acclaim, incorporating the sounds of blues, soul, country and Tejano, the Grammy-winning group
LOS LONELY BOYS, consisting of three brothers from San Angelo, Texas, will perform Saturday night,
August 13th at the 7th annual Dutch Mason Blues Festival. In 2004, the group’s hit single, “Heaven”
reached No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND make their appearance on Saturday night. Randolph is
listed as #97 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list. The pedal steel guitarist cites Stevie
Ray Vaughan as a primary influence in his own technique and style. In 2004 and again in 2008, Robert
Randolph and the Family Band was the opening act on the Eric Clapton tour and were also one of four
featured artists on the Music Builds Tour. They are featured prominently in the Clapton's Crossroads Guitar
Festival 2004 and 2010 DVD.
Rarely does an artist explode onto the music scene with the force and impact of a comet as it did when
26-year-old singer-guitarist GARY CLARK JR. delivered an incendiary debut performance of his song
“Bright Lights” at the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival last June — Clark was the only young newcomer to
be selected by Eric Clapton to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Weaned on John Lee Hooker,
Lightnin Hopkins, and T-Bone Walker, Clark has won the Austin Music Award for Best Blues and Electric
Guitarist on three separate occasions, in addition to receiving awards from various blues magazines and
associations around the country. He also starred alongside Danny Glover and Stacy Keach in John Sayles’
2007 film Honeydripper. Gary Clark Jr. and his band perform Saturday afternoon.
Performing on Sunday, August 14th, SONNY LANDRETH is an American blues musician from southwest
Louisiana who is especially known as a slide guitar player, having developed a technique where he also frets
notes and plays chords and chord fragments behind the slide while he plays. He's also known for his righthand technique, which involves tapping, slapping, and picking strings, using all of the fingers on his right
hand. Landreth performed at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004, 2007, and 2010. The singersongwriter-guitarist brings together blues, jazz, Cajun, zydeco, and rock music, creating a style increasingly
appealing to a wide array of listeners and praised by critics from Guitar Player magazine to the Vancouver
Sun.
Two guitar giants and son of Willie Nelson to perform Friday night
Veteran musical giants, 5-time Grammy award winner ROBBEN FORD and MICHAEL LANDAU will
hit the stage on Friday night, August 12th with their new project Renegade Creation, blending together to
create a blues-driven sound that not only will satisfy their individual fans but is fresh enough to attract a
legion of new fans as well. Delivering both rootsy, blues/rock vocal tunes and fiery instrumentals, the band
draws on the unique guitar interplay between two guitar giants.
With nearly 270 shows lined up this year, LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL are taking the
world by storm with their debut release, 'Promise of the Real.' The band members blend genres, from rock
and blues to reggae, producing a sound as diverse as their background. After a jaw-dropping 'Late Show
With David Letterman' performance last month and stints opening for Willie Nelson [Lukas' dad], B.B. King
and Dave Matthews, as well as sharing the stage with Steven Tyler, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, the band
have already made a name for themselves.
In the past two years, JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR has gone from a promising young blues talent to a bona
fide force on the international music scene. She took home Best Female Vocalist honors at the 2010 British
Blues Awards, has supported tours by Joe Bonamassa and Eric Sardinas and impressed legions of fans in the
US, Europe and Australia with her high-energy attack. She signed to Ruf Records in 2008 and recorded her
debut, White Sugar, the album became the best-selling artist debut in the history of Ruf Records and
garnered a nomination as Best New Artist Debut at the 2010 Blues Music Awards. Hailing from the British
Midlands, Taylor was discovered at age 16 by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Joanne Shaw Taylor will
help kick off our concert weekend on Friday night.
Festival includes Canadian Maple Blues Award winning artists
Considered one of the finest blues guitarists on the scene today, JACK DE KEYZER is a 2-time Juno
award and 7-time Maple Blues award winning artist. Performing at festival on Saturday afternoon, the
British born, Canadian resident’s career has spanned over three decades. De Keyzer has released 7 CD's and
1 DVD as a leader and appeared as a session guitarist on hundreds of recordings. Jack was also awarded
Great Canadian Blues Artist of the year from a poll of CBC radio listeners in 2009.
THE MAPLE BLUES REVUE is a first rate Canadian Blues Show featuring three dynamic vocalists,
Dawn Tyler Watson, Chuck Jackson and John Mays, with an outstanding eight piece band. Performing
during the festival weekend on Sunday, all members of the Revue are multiple Maple Blues Award winners
and nominees. They represent the cream of the crop in this country's Blues elite, drawn from legendary acts
like Downchild, Fathead, The Jack de Keyzer Band, The Whiteley Bros., The Johnny Max Band and
Raoul & The Big Time.
She has been called "the Reincarnate of Janis Joplin" and deemed Canada's "Darling of the blues." She is a
young powerful vocalist who was born in British Columbia and has been singing since the tender age of
four. LAYLA ZOE has performed all over the world and has five CD releases to date: You Will, Shades of
Blue, Hoochie Coochie Woman, Live at Errington Hall and The Firegirl. She took home the "Female
Vocalist of the Year" award at the Vancouver Island Music Awards in 2006 and won the Compo 10
International blues songwriting competition in Finland in 2006. Layla is being considered for a Hollywood
production of the Life of Janis Joplin, and has already been asked to sing the soundtrack for this upcoming
film.
They’re all out of Humber College - a music school that was hardly sympathetic to a blues band.
Academically, everyone reads music, they know music theory better than most of their peers, and prefer to
play with the emotional depth of the “basic” blues. THE 24TH STREET WAILERS were crowned 2010
winners of the Toronto Blues Society’s annual New Talent Search, earning them a recording session at Phase
One, one of the best recording studios in Toronto. Dirty Little Young’uns was recorded live off the floor in
two ten-hour sessions. It’s a roaring, hilarious, power-packed, 13-track outing comprised of original material
from each member.
