In the industry wherein we toil such occurrences are as common as a downpour on the West Coast, where I happen to rest my weary coconut each night. Given the need for confidentiality in such dealings, we should not be surprised that Company A, while we dozed, has swallowed whole or in part Company B, yet we always are. When the cat’s away, goes the proverb, the mice will play. That was my reaction to the recent news that Vancouver-based MGA CanSure Underwriting has picked up the property division and its book of business from North Vancouver underwriting manager Chutter Underwriting Services. Insurancewest considers both firms good friends. Bruce MacKinnon and John Woodcock, who were partners in the property division at Chutter, are now partners and members of Can-Sure’s senior management team. “It’s still early yet,” Can-Sure boss Jeff Golf and make money at the same time? We’re good friends, we Hart share the same philosophy. They bring with them a lot of new broker relationships, new insurer relationships. We can now diversify that side of our business. It gives us the ability to crosssell other lines to the property book.” Peter and Mike Chutter, owners of Chutter Underwriting, also expressed excitement about the transaction and the return to their roots as a casualty underwriting firm. Peter “We are pleased to anChutter nounce the move of our personal lines division (Chutter Personal Lines Underwriting Services, or CPLUS), headed by David Lyons, and his capable staff, to our North Vancouver head office,” says president Peter Chutter. “This enables head Mike office to provide additional Chutter support to this successful and growing online personal lines business.” He added, “Though this has been a very busy time, we have already hired additional casualty underwriting staff and implemented a property component to our casualty toolbox to enable us to provide even better service to Western brokers. We wish John and Bruce success at their new home, and thank them for all their service and support over the past ten years.” So new beginnings all around, then – and profitable and satisfying for all, let’s hope. No doubt news of the acquisition will be talked about until, well, until the next acquisition. Of course we’ll inform readers as soon as that happens. For now, roll over and go back to sleep.
