Welcome
A very warm welcome to our spring 2016
edition of the Link. I hope that this magazine
gives you a great insight into all things Honda
and what’s happening at our Vertu Honda
dealerships in the East Midlands and North
East.
Happy New Year to each and every one of
you, I trust that your car or motorcycle,
continues to exceed your expectations. Firstly
what a year for Honda, with the arrival of the
all New Jazz, the return of the fire breathing
Type R, the Brand New HR-V, and on two
wheels, the iconic Africa Twin! Many of you I
know will already be experiencing these great
new products, or enjoying the benefits of the
2015/16 updates to the rest of our range. We
have a fantastic fleet of demonstrators ready
for you to put to the test, to see for yourself
the lengths our Honda engineers around the
world have gone to deliver class leading
products in terms of design, flexibility,
practicality, efficiency and technological
advancement.
It’s been an exciting time for all of our teams
at Vertu Honda. On the 4th December our
management team travelled to the Honda UK
awards evening, which was held at the
amazing Natural History Museum in London.
With Dinosaurs and Charles Darwin looking
over the event, attended by all dealers from
across the UK, we were proudly awarded
Honda UK large dealer group of the year for
the second year running. Vertu Honda Boston
was ranked in the top 5 dealers in the UK and
to top the night off Vertu Honda also won
Corporate Business to Business dealer of the

service and parts performance and above all
customer satisfaction levels within our
dealerships based on the feedback, you our

at Vertu Honda take this for granted. I am
personally very proud of the awards but even
more so proud of the daily efforts our teams
at all Vertu Honda dealerships make to
deliver our mission; “To deliver an
outstanding customer motoring experience
through honesty and trust”.
We kick off 2016 with the strongest and most

variety of helmets, clothing and accessories

Finally I am very proud to announce that we
again expand our Honda business this year.
In January we acquired the Lookers Honda
car dealerships in Nottingham and Derby
along with the Benfield Honda car dealership
in Stockton on Tees. A warm welcome to all
customers in these areas. Our teams in
Stockton, Nottingham and Derby will
complement our established Honda
dealerships in the North East and East
Midlands. We have come a long way since
opening our first Honda dealership in
Grantham 20 years ago this summer. I
personally assure you the best of our
attention at all times delivered through
friendly, knowledgeable and proud Honda
professionals.

We’re pleased to announce the
arrival of two new special editions of
the popular Civic and CR-V ranges.
The Civic Limited Edition is just
£14,995 on the road and the CR-V
Black Edition starts from £29,995.
Three years after the last version of the CR-V
Black Edition first launched, Honda has revived
the more sporty, premium look. Available in
Limited edition
4WD with a choice of petrol or diesel manual
or automatic, the new CR-V Black Edition
starts from £29,995 for the manual 2.0 i-VTEC
and tops out at £33,730 for the automatic
1.6 i-DTEC.
On the exterior, owners will get running
boards, a tailgate spoiler, 19” black alloys,
CIVIC
a gloss black front grille as well as gloss black
skid plates on the front and rear. The highquality full leather interior features contrasting
stitching with an embossed Black Edition logo
on the front and rear seats while the door
panels and arm rests are also leather. The
interior is finished off with premium carpet
mats complete with the Black Edition logo.
Based on the standard 1.4 i-VTEC S manual, the
new Civic Limited Edition comes with 16” aero
alloys, body coloured wheel arches, front panel
and rear skirt to give the car a slightly more
aggressive sporty look. Available in Brilliant
Sporty Blue, Polished Metal, Milano Red and
Crystal Black, the new car is priced at just
£14,995 on the road.

The third generation Jazz has arrived and
is creating quite a stir. Below you will read
of its first Award, leading the super mini
sector, by some distance, in terms of
passenger safety. The Jazz has always
been one of our best selling cars, its
versatility, coupled with ease of drive, low
running costs and refinement makes it a
winner. The all new Jazz builds on the
strengths of the previous model, with a
new 1.3 i-VTEC Earth Dreams Technology
engine 60 mpg is easily achievable. The
ultra-smooth CVT automatic gearbox is
also available.

WHAT CAR? ANNUAL
SAFETY AWARDS
The new 2016 Jazz has lead the way in safety in
the recent What Car? Safety Awards. It came
second, only just behind the large SUV Volvo
XC90, this is quite some feat for a supermini. The
Jazz was one of only two supermini class cars to
gain the full 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating in
2015 tests.
The Jazz has set a new benchmark for the level of
safety you can expect from a small car, with the
latest technology such as autonomous emergency
braking system fitted as standard across the
range. The mid range models have even more
safety technology fitted as standard including

speed limit which informs drivers of the speed
limit and can even keep the vehicle speed at the
correct level. This is a first in the supermini sector.
Standard equipment of this kind on a car costing
less than £13,000 is a market first and showcases
Honda’s commitment to technology and driver
safety.
On a separate note we are pleased to announce
that the newly launched Honda HR-V has achieved
the highest 5 star rating in its recent Euro NCAP
test, joining the rest of the Honda range, all with
their 5 star ratings.

Introduced to the UK in 1999 the original
HR-V challenged peoples perceptions of what
a family car could offer. Fast forward to 2016
and the sector is firmly established and is one
of the fastest growing parts of the UK market.
The HR-V is a versatile car, offering a slightly
elevated driving position along with lots of
space and versatility, while at the same time
having tight and precise handling. In true
Honda style is has tardis like interior space
with the infamous rear magic seats and 470
litres of boot space, plus there is plenty of leg
room for the rear passengers.
Equipment levels are high whichever model
you choose, alloy wheels along with climate
control are standard across the range. Honda
has also fitted the HR-V with a host of
advanced safety technology to keep you and
your passengers safe. Available with two
engines, a 1.5 i-VTEC petrol and the 1.6 iDTEC diesel, and choice of an automatic

Honda’s new Civic Type R has scooped the hot hatch at
the 2015 Scottish Car of the Year (SCOTY) Awards. The
Civic Type R’s high revving all-new 2.0 litre VTEC TURBO

Hot on the heels of the Honda HR-V taking the 2015 What Car? Reader
Award crown, the NSX supercar is in the running to continue Honda’s
success for a second year in a row. Compiled by What Car? experts and
voted for by readers, the shortlist for the 2016 Reader Award features the
most eagerly anticipated new models coming to the UK market in the
next twelve months.
Arriving in the UK later this year, the NSX has been specially created to
bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar sector. Resulting from a
three-year intensive engineering programme by a global design and
engineering team at Honda’s development centre in Raymond, Ohio,
the NSX features classic low and wide proportions, an aggressive front
design, and rear lights that pay homage to the original NSX.
At the heart of the NSX’s performance is an all-new mid-mounted,
75-degree, DOHC V6 engine with twin turbochargers mated to a
specially-developed nine-speed DCT which delivers 565bhp and a
0-62mph estimated at under three seconds.

Vertu Honda Durham opened in 2004. The purpose built site is a perfect fit for the
Honda franchise, offering a bright and airy showroom, good access and parking, and
finally, space for an impressive used car display.

Vertu Honda Doncaster has made quite an impact on the town since it opened in
August 2012. The dealership is located on the busy Thorne Road. Kevin Orridge has
strong sales team, helped by Chris Walker, Sales Manager, and Service Manager, Gareth
Humphreys. Doncaster is a thriving town, larger in size than many realise. A keen
supporter of the local community the dealership supports the Doncaster Knights and
Doncaster Rovers together with taking part in local events each year.
VERTU HONDA MANSFIELD
Vertu Honda Mansfield opened in August 2009. The opportunity in Mansfield, the
largest town in England, was clear from the outset. The large showroom allows the
Branch Manager, Richard Jones, the ability to showcase not only every car in the Honda
range but often multiple examples of the same model. There really is no better place to
view a new Honda. Robert Taylor, Sales Manager, strengthens the management team
along with Service Manager, Adam Wright.
VERTU HONDA NOTTINGHAM
Vertu Honda Nottingham is one of the newest members of our family having joined the
group with Derby and Stockton in January 2016. The large showroom, on Lenton Lane
is easily found from the A52 ring road. Rob Fletcher will return to the site as General
Manager, having had links there many years ago before he joined Vertu Honda in 2008.
His management team will consist of Paul Hemmington-Page, in sales and Lorrayne
Smith in service. Nottingham is also home to our newest Motorcycle dealership on
Hayden Road, headed by General Manager Jamie Halliday. With a passionate team of
bikers it is the key destination for bikers in the East Midlands. With a vibrant city to
serve the dealerships are set for a period of growth and expansion.
VERTU HONDA DERBY
Vertu Honda Derby has a prime location on Sir Frank Whittle Road in the city. The large
site is ideal for showcasing the Honda range and allows space for an impressive used
car display. The recent additional to the Vertu family will undergo a period of
investment to help it grow alongside the Honda range. Headed by Peter Wileman
General Manager and supported by Simon Felstead and Jeff Rex, the dealership has an
important part to play in serving Honda owners in the East Midlands.
VERTU HONDA GRANTHAM
2016 marks the twentieth anniversary of Vertu Honda Grantham cars opening in the town. The Honda range was certainly very different
then, finding its foothold in the UK market. In its first year the dealership sold one hundred new Honda cars and fifty eight approved used
cars. How times have changed. Anyone visiting the site will be met by familiar faces, the dealership having an extremely stable team of
passionate colleagues. Headed by General Manager Mark Goode working alongside Michael Mahon, David Green, Steve Harris and Matt
Webb, the dealership is in a safe pair of hands for the next twenty years. Grantham is also home to our well established bikes dealership.

VERTU HONDA NEWCASTLE
The city of Newcastle has a long association with Honda. In 2005 the franchise moved
to the impressive dealership on Scotswood Road, with views over the river to the Metro
Centre. In 2012 Vertu Honda took over the former Springfield Honda site. The modern
dealership is home to a team of just over 35 colleagues and showcases a wide range of
new and Approved Used Honda cars. You’ll be welcomed by a host of familiar faces,
some of which have worked for Honda for over twenty years. Richie Carrigan, the
General Manager, oversees the whole dealership, Mark Spring as Sales Manager heads
the sales team along with Chad Ridley, Business Manager and Sean Coulson as Service
Manager. Newcastle along with Durham and Sunderland Honda are proud sponsors of
the mighty Newcastle Eagles basketball team, supplying a fleet of British built Civics to
the players.
VERTU HONDA SUNDERLAND
Vertu Honda Sunderland opened in 1992. The showroom has just undergone a full and
extensive refurbishment in line with the latest Honda guidelines. It is home to a very
stable team of colleagues who are passionate about the Honda brand. Peter Middleton
oversees all operations as General Manager along with Mark Hildreth, Sales Manager,
Dave Hart, Business Manager and Dave Shaw, Service Manager. Between them they
have ensured Sunderland Honda is highly ranked in Honda’s national customer
satisfaction index.
VERTU HONDA STOCKTON
The modern purpose built showroom on Concorde Way, Preston Farm is home to a
passionate team of Honda professionals, Formally Benfield Honda, Vertu Honda
Stockton will keep the long association of Honda in the city. Martin Boagey, Mark
Gorman and Craig Swainston head the management team. The change of ownership
will see a stable team reap the rewards of some future investment to allow them to
fully showcase the Honda range as it develops over the coming years.
VERTU HONDA RETFORD
Vertu Honda Retford evolved from a very successful and longstanding Vauxhall
dealership in 1997. The market town has proven to be the perfect fit with Honda for
the dealership which serves the surrounding areas of Worksop, Gainsborough and their
outlying villages. Headed by a very stable team of Paul French and Wendy Archer, the
dealership has provided high levels of customer service for many years, consistently in
the top 5 of the national Honda Customer Satisfaction Index.
VERTU HONDA LINCOLN
Vertu Honda Lincoln is one of our larger dealerships located in the heart of the city. Set
to undergo a significant investment over the forthcoming year it is home to the latest
range of Honda cars and a passionate dedicated team of colleagues. Chris Duggan,
General Manager, leads Chris Green, Business Manager, and Jason Crookes, Service
Manager, who heads the service team working alongside Jason Tavlia, Parts Manager.
A large site not only means an extensive display of new cars but also one of the best
selections of Approved Used Cars in the city.
VERTU HONDA BOSTON
Vertu Honda Boston was our first new build dealership. Opened in 2000 the dealership
quickly made its mark in the town and built a strong and loyal following to the Honda
brand. Boston, as a town, has undergone many changes and the dealership has
developed alongside with a strengthening of the management team and investment in
the facilities. Branch Manager, Matthew Hodgkinson, heads the sales team with Tobi
Lukins, they work alongside John Parrott and Kappa Jones in aftersales.

Using Blind spot
information and
Cross traffiC
monitor systems
when towing
Current models of Civic and CRV can be equipped with the
Driver Assistance Safety Pack (DASP). This package includes a
number of additional safety systems including Blind Spot
Information and Cross Traffic Monitor.
The blind spot information (BSI) system is a function which
illuminates an alert indicator on door mirrors to inform the
driver when another vehicle, travelling in the same direction,
in a neighbouring lane enters an area, where the driver may
not see the vehicle with their peripheral vision or mirrors.
The Cross Traffic Monitor (CTM) is a function which displays
markers on the multi-information display and sounds an alarm
to alert the driver if another vehicle is detected approaching
from the right or left when the vehicle is reversing. Both
systems receive information from two radar units mounted
behind the rear bumper.
When towing with a DASP equipped vehicle, it is likely that
the radar will detect the trailer or caravan and illuminate the
BSI indicators in the mirrors. It is also highly likely that when
reversing with a trailer or caravan the CTM will notify you of
an oncoming vehicle which is in fact your trailer.
You can, of course, simply ignore these alerts
however; it is possible for the driver to
deactivate the alerts, from the dashboard
menu select “customise settings “on Civic
or “change settings” on CRV whilst
the vehicle is stationary. For more
information refer to the
owner’s manual.

A couple of updates from two of
our loyal customers:

Hugo is a long standing customer of Boston
Honda, visiting the dealership for the past
twelve years and an owner of Honda cars for
the past eighteen years.
We are thrilled to report that a Morpeth
woman has won a brand new Honda Jazz in a
raffle that raised more than £45,000 for St
Oswald’s Hospice.
In this time he has owned eight Honda Civics,
of various guises and a CR-V. His current Civic
sits alongside a very appealing Honda CB650F
motorcycle, purchased from our bike dealership
in Grantham. To complete the Honda line up
Hugo even has a Honda lawnmower.
Despite owning numerous Honda cars he has
never experienced any major problems which
gives him confidence in recommending Honda,
and indeed Boston Honda, to his friends and
family. A number of which have purchased a
Honda on Hugo’s recommendation.
We wish Hugo well, whether it be on two
wheels or four!
The car, which was donated by Vertu Honda in
Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham, was won
by Anne Ballantyne after she bought a ticket
for the hospice’s annual fundraising raffle
when visiting her late mother at the Gosforthbased hospice.
An active member of the Honda forums, John
has owned Honda Accords for the last nine
years, currently on his fifth, and likely to be his
last as the model has recently been
discontinued from the UK model line-up.
With a keen interest in all things Honda, John
follows developments with the brand around
the world, and while disappointed that the
Accord has been discontinued he welcomes the
widening of the range of Honda cars available
in the UK, hoping to see the import of
additional models including a version of the
S660 and maybe the S2000 replacement.
A longstanding customer of both Springfield
Honda and now Newcastle Honda, he has seen
many changes over the years, he welcomes
the familiar faces and high levels of attentive
service whenever he visits. John looks forward
to the continued expansion of the range of cars
available in the UK and the return of some
iconic advertising campaigns.
Melissa is a winner!
We’re really proud to announce that Melissa
Brown, our accountant for Doncaster,
Mansfield and Retford has won ‘Accountant of
the Year’ at Vertu Motors’ annual management
awards.
Melissa has worked across a number of
dealerships, franchises and divisions since
joining Vertu Motors seven years ago. She

Thanks to the thousands of people who
purchased tickets at local events, at their local
Vertu Honda dealership and via the summer
2015 issue of The Link newsletter. Ticket sales
helped St Oswald’s Hospice surpass its initial
target of raising £45,000 to collect £46,259,
which is the most the hospice has ever raised
from its annual raffle.
The money raised is more than enough to pay
the salary of a full time senior nurse for an
entire year, and goes some of the way towards
the £7 million that St Oswald’s needs to raise
every year through its own fundraising in order
to continue to deliver its high quality palliative
care to adults, children and young people in
the North East.
Collecting her prize from Vertu Honda
Newcastle, Anne said: “I’m absolutely over the
moon to have won the Honda Jazz, I didn’t
think I would win when I bought the raffle ticket; I was
just happy to support St Oswald’s Hospice.
Vertu Motors plc, via Bristol Street Motors, will continue to
support the hospice in the coming years with a donation
of a car for their 2016 annual raffle. Good luck to all who

open in South Wales in March, enabling

the Brecon Beacons National Park, will cater

earlier in the newsletter. An incredible achievement in such a short space of time. It’s certainly
been an exciting start Honda’s fifty first year. The new line up of cars and bikes is really having
an impact, with a good supply of the new Jazz available and HR-V becoming a familiar sight
on our local roads. The mighty Africa Twin is already set to become the market leader.
It’s a period of change yet again at Vertu Honda with our family of dealerships growing.
