I remember there was a joint seminar taking place being hosted by the Christian and Islamic societies on worshipping God, aimed at celebrating the similarities between the 2 monotheistic religions. I was intrigued by the thought that I could have much in common with a muslim and my curiosity led me to attend. I must admit I was sceptical about the whole thing but was quite surprised to learn that we actually do have a lot in common and my opinion about muslims and islam was changed forever. 1 2 3 You Sign A Gift Aid Declaration Because You Are A Uk Tax Payer. But it wasn’t until I had graduated and started working that I really grew to learn about Islam and gain love and respect for it. A muslim colleague of mine and I would spend most of our lunch hour every day discussing religion. Eventually I had learnt enough to know that Islam was the path I wanted to follow in life. I took the shahada and the following year I got married, yes, you guessed it! to my colleague, Mohammad. Alhamdulillah I feel truly blessed that Allah has guided me to Islam and hope that I can fulfil my role as a muslim woman, wife and mother. There is an immense sense of security and peacefulness in being “with God” in life and I have decided to dedicate my life and time to all things that will keep me on this precious path. I recognise that the world is not always “on our side” and that the environment is polluted with corruption and “man-made catastrophes”. I have learnt to deal with this by “doing my bit”, not only where my friends and family are concerned but towards our fellow human beings who are suffering all over the world. Learning of the great sacrifices made by the Ahlubayt in Karbala led me to research upon great personalities such as Hazrat Zainab (sa) and Imam Hussain (as) and the incredible sacrifice they made for Islam. I believe that each one of us can reflect on their message and bring it into our daily lives to help us to come closer to our ideals as muslims and become better human beings in the short time we have in this world. Zehra (Jennifer) Charles Dickens (English novelist 1812 - 1870): “If Husain had fought to quench his worldly desires…then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for Islam.” ” COVERS.indd 4-5 You Donate A Pound. 100% Donation works? You Lose Nothing And We Receive £1.28. But I have left for the REFORMATION of the Ummah of my Grandfather the Apostle of Allah (s.a.w.) and I desire to do Amr Bil Maroof (invite towards good values) and Nahi Anal Munkar (forbidding from Evil).’ “By Allah, I will never give you my hand like a man who has been humiliated, nor will I flee like a slave.” Imam Hussain (A.S) 1 The above quote represents the qualities of Imam Hussain a.s, the strength of his intentions and the ultimate goal he strived for. Muslim It is a powerful mission statement! Population (%) by respective Every action has a cause and effect – Imam country Hussain’s a.s cause was to ‘invite towards % good’ which had the effect of ‘reforming from 90-100 corruption and saving true Islam’. Our tears 80-90 are undoubtedly a treasure, however the true 70-80 message of Imam Hussain a.s goes further - to 60-70 move our souls. Today the flag of Islam is held high for Amr Bil Maroof, (inviting towards good) 50-60 and all that is related to it because of Imam 40-50 Hussain a.s. 30-40 We are the guardians of this earth, with free will and the most wonderful gift of choice, the result of which has changed nations. We have clear directions in the Quran and perfect examples to follow. We make choices every moment of our lives and ultimately ‘every soul shall be held in pledge for its deeds’ (Quran 74:38). We must recognise the power and responsibility entrusted to us and revisit our daily, weekly, yearly and lifetime aims to review our personal ‘mission statement’. If we sincerely strive to adopt Imam Hussain’s a.s goal in life, perhaps we would then be considered similar to His companions on the plains of Kerbala. 20-30 10-20 0-10 1st Day 1 AH 61 (1st October 680) Imam Hussain (as) & followers are halted on the way to Kufa by Hurr & his 1000 man army forcing them to set-up camp in the desert at Karbala, 75km from Kufa. And one who visits our last one, visits the first one.’ Imam Moosa Kazim (a.s.). 5 It is the deepest desire of every Shia to be bestowed with the bounty of visiting the shrines of the Infallibles. It is apparent from Quranic verses and authentic traditions that those who have given their lives in Allah’s swt way are very much alive. As history shall bear witness, all Imams a.s without exception, were either martyred by the sword or poisoned. Our Imams a.s are the chiefs of all martyrs and are alive to witness our actions, hear our talks and answer us. There is immense reward and merit in each step of the visitation, from the time one makes his intention on departure to returning home. Jannat ul Baqi Sir Muhammad Iqbal (Politician and Philosopher 1877- 1938) says: Imam Husayn uprooted despotism forever till the Day of Resurrection. He watered the dry garden of freedom with the surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation. If Imam Husayn had aimed at acquiring a worldly empire, he would not have traveled the way he did (from Medina to Karbala). Husayn weltered in blood and dust for the sake of truth. Verily he, therefore, became the bed-rock (foundation) of the Muslim creed; la ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah). Imam a.s changed the rituals of Hajj into Umra to avoid bloodshed in Mecca. 7 Imam Hussain a.s stopped at fourteen destinations on route to Karbala. These destinations have been mentioned in history books and have even been traced to a map of 9th Century Hijri, held in the British Museum. 1. Saffah Imam Hussain a.s met the famous poet Farazdaq. Farazdaq advised Imam Hussain a.s of the deceitful intentions of the people of Kufa. 2. Dhatul Irq Imam Hussain a.s met Abdullah Ibn Jaafar who was Imam’s a.s cousin and the husband of his sister Hazrat Zainab s.a. Abdullah brought his two sons Aun and Muhammad to accompany the Imam a.s. Both sons were later martyred. 3. Town of Batn-ur-Rumma Imam Hussain a.s met Abdullah Ibn Mutee who told the Imam a.s that the people of Kufa could not be trusted. 4 Town of Zurud Imam a.s met Zohair Ibne Qain. At the time Zohair was undecided as to which side to take, Imam a.s or Yazid. Imam Hussain a.s saw his tent and sent him a note. The contents of the note are unknown, but the result was that Zohair joined Imam Hussain a.s and was later martyred. 5 Town of Zabala Imam Hussain a.s learnt the heartbreaking news that Hazrat Muslim Ibne Aqeel, his two small children and Imam’s dear friend Hani had been martyred. Many tribesmen who were travelling with Imam Hussain a.s left after the signs of an impending war with no hopes of collecting war booty had become clear. 6 Batn-e-Aqiq Imam Hussain a.s met a man from the tribe of Akrama who informed him that Kufa had been surrounded by Yazid and no one was permitted to enter or leave the town. 7 Sorat Imam a.s stayed here over night. The next morning after morning prayer he asked his companions to store as much water as possible. 8 Sharaf Imam Hussain a.s was told by a companion of the approach of an army through the dust storm. 9 Zuhasm Imam Hussain a.s was met by 1000 of Hur’s men, coming from Kufa and without water. Day 7 AH 61 (7th October 680) Fearing for the health of the women and children, Imam Hussain (as) asks his brother ‘Abbas (as) to bring water from the river which he manages despite being attacked. Muharram A Guide Final.indd 8-9 Mahatma Gandhi (Indian political and spiritual leader 1869 - 1948): “My faith is that the progress of Islam does not depend on the use of sword by its believers, but the result of the supreme sacrifice of Hussain (A.S.), the great saint. I learned from Hussain (as) how to achieve victory while being oppressed.” Imam Hussain a.s offered the enemy water - all the soldiers and animals drank to their fill. At the time of midday prayers Hur and his army stood to pray behind Imam Hussain a.s. In light of the treachery of the Kufans Imam Hussain a.s did not wish to go to Kufa and Hur’s army did not want him to return to Madina. Both parties agreed to by-pass Kufa and turn north with Imam’s a.s party leading and Hur’s SYRIA army following behind. Damascus IRAQ 14 Karbala 13 Kufa 12 Najaf 11 10 9 8 KUWAIT 7 JORDAN 6 5 4 Madina 3 2 1 Mecca 10 Baiza Imam a.s delivered a famous sermon detailing reasons for opposing the oath of allegiance to Yazid. Twelve hundred years later in Gettesburg, Abraham Lincoln in a speech said, ‘to suffer in silence while they should protest makes cowards of men’. His words reflect what Imam a.s said and stood for over 1200 years ago. 11 Uzaibul Hajanat Imam Hussain a.s did not mobilise military support which he could easily have mustered in Hejaz – he did not wish to exploit the physical strength available to him. 8 12 Qasre- Bani Maqatil Imam Hussain a.s saw a dream. In explaining it to his son Hazrat Ali Akbar a.s, he said ‘we have no worries whether death takes us or we fall upon death’. IRAN 13 Nainawah A messenger from Ibn Ziad the Governor of Kufa came to meet the army of Hur and told them not to leave the Imam a.s. They passed through Ghaziriyah and arrived at a place by the river banks of the Euphrates. 14 Karbala The final destination Kerbin-wa-bala - a place of torture and pain. Tents were pitched near the river bank. The date was 2nd of Muharram 61 Hijiri (3rd October 681 AD). SAUDI ARABIA Day 8 AH 61 (8th October 680) Imam Hussain (as) meets Sa’ad questioning his allegiance to Yazid and asks, “Don’t you fear God on the Day of Judgement? You know who I am”. But Sa’ad’s loyalty is unshaken. www.ehsantrust.com 06/12/2008 12:37:46 The Scale of Things Muharram is a time of mourning and reflection, a time when we should be contemplating the world around us as we stand witness to the increase in wars, injustice, economic hardships and people’s suffering across the globe. We must never forget that each one of us can make a difference and ‘better’ our world. Imam Hussain (as) gave all for the sake of Islam. He secured for us, an eternal victory, by showing us the only “true and right path” so that we may adhere to it, and achieve success for the afterlife! He stood firm against the evil Emperor of his time and all the wrong he represented. Hazrat Imam Hussain (as) was prepared to sacrifice everything in the way of Allah without hesitation, to end corruption and for the preservation of truth and justice on Earth. EHSANE AL-MAHDI C H A R I T A B L E T R U S T R e g N o . 1 1 1 3 2 2 8 Well it’s time now Get thinking and get involved. Choose to take action and be moved to make a change. If you want to create a better world, work for change – do your bit for charity and mobilize the power of humanity! 1 5 Ehsane Al-Mahdi Charitable Trust is a UK based registered charity - with projects spanning across the Middle East and Asia, working on poverty relief and long term solutions for the most vulnerable. We strive for a better world through voluntary action, both in the UK and abroad, giving our hand of help and knowing that together we are stronger. We work without salary, pursuing our objectives with sincerity and determination. And we become stronger with every one person who chooses to take action for humanity. Dr. K. Sheldrake: “Of that gallant band, male and female knew that the enemy forces around were implacable, and were not only ready to fight, but to kill. Denied even water for the children, they remained parched under the burning sun and scorching sands, yet not one faltered for a moment. Husain marched with his little company, not to glory, not to power of wealth, but to a supreme sacrifice, and every member bravely faced the greatest odds without flinching.” Muharram A Guide Final.indd 16 06/12/2008 12:37:50
