The organization aimed to help Zaireen perform their pilgrimage with comfort and ease. One of the ways in which the Faiz achieved this goal was by setting up Pilgrim Residences in Iraq at Kazmain, Karbala, Najaf and Basrah. These Pilgrim Residences were managed by the Jetha Gokal Family. In 1968, Shaheed Abdul Hussain Jetha Gokal, chairman of A.F.P. Trust in Iraq, was martyred. The then Government of Iraq confiscated the moveable and immoveable properties of A.F.P. in Iraq and suspended the activities of the Faiz in Iraq. We are glad to advise that the Government of the Republic of Iraq - General Secretariat for the Council of Ministers, NGO’s Directorate, have confirmed the Registration of Anjuman e Faiz e Panjetani as an NGO in Iraq under Serial No.2176626 Registration Certificate Ref. No.1858 dated 30/12/2013, to carry on its day to day activities in the territory of the Republic of Iraq. The new Government of Iraq constituted a committee in 2004 to look into all such issues of Auqaf properties illegally seized by the previous Iraqi Regime. The President and Vice President of the A.F.P. along with their team made several visits to Iraq and represented the case of the A.F.P. to the Prime Minister of Iraq and the judiciary. 6 7 The Concept Karbala is a vibrant religious centre that attracts millions of pilgrims every year. The number of visitors to the Holy City of Karbala is increasing significantly every year. However, years of strife have left a huge dent on the city’s facilities and its ability to cater efficiently to these pilgrims. It is difficult to find affordable, comfortable accommodation during the high season (Muharram, Safar), without spending exorbitant sums of money. An Introduction to the Project During the brutal regime of Saddam Hussain, these facilities were forcibly confiscated in 1968/69. After much effort the A.F.P. properties have now been reinstated. We have now been given the opportunity to revive this noble cause, and provide comfortable and modern accommodation to Zaireen, at an affordable rate. 8 An Introduction to the Project “The project will provide pilgrims with a modern, clean and secure ‘home away from home’ facility to enable them to carry out their religious activities in comfort and with peace of mind” 9 The Inspiration The accommodation at any Ziyarat location plays a very important role for the Zaireen. It should provide the Zaireen with the peace of mind that is needed to help them focus on their Ziyarat and on spirituality. However, as is often seen, a lot of the accommodation in the pilgrimage cities of Iraq do not meet these requirements. The A.F.P. Karbala project aims to create a facility that addresses this issue. Why Build a Pilgrim Residence? These considerations include: It is a question that we have often been asked: “Why build a separate facility when there are already a lot of hotels that exist in Karbala?” • In-house laundry, dining, library and shop facilities • Energy efficient heating and cooling systems (to save electrical costs) • Clean drinking water within the building • Wheelchair accessible toilets and rooms • High quality fixtures throughout the building • Low maintenance surface treatments and features throughout the building The reasons behind the motivation for building the Al Qasr Residence are simple: • The hotels close to the Haramain do not have the facilities that we propose to offer, and the ones that are new and ‘modern’ are generally located far from the Haramain. The project does not aim to provide an over-thetop, luxurious experience. The aim of this project is simply to provide all visitors with comfortable, modern accommodation that is designed to international standards in close proximity to the Haramain • Zaireen to Karbala and other religious sites often have to pay exorbitant and often unaffordable rates for hotels during peak season. Special care and thought has been put into all steps of the design and planning process to achieve these objectives while maintaining the affordability of the accommodation. An Introduction to the Project 10 An Introduction to the Project 11 The Location The site lies 400m from the Haram Shareef of Imam Hussain (A.S.) on the main road, and will be only 100m from the Haram complex once the 300m Karbala Haram expansion project is completed in a few years (Blue Zone). Imam Hussain (A.S) Hazrat Abbas (A.S) Haram Shareef The Location Future Expansion of Haram 400m 300 metres Proposed Site Qasr Residence (100m from expansion) 12 The Location 13 Plot and Location Highlights • Total plot area: 750 sq metres approximately • 400m from Haram of Imam Hussain (A.S.) • Only 100m from the proposed Haram expansion project • 10 minutes walk from the shrine of Imam Hussain (A.S.) • 15 minutes from the shrine of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) • No major checkpoints while walking to both shrines • Wheelchair accessible • Unrestricted views of the shrine of Imam Hussain (A.S.) • High accessibility provided by roads on two sides of the plot 14 The Location 15 The Proposal Current hotels in Karbala that are close to the Haram, are very basic, and the ones that provide an acceptable level of comfort (generally quite far from the Haram) charge very high rates especially during peak season. The A.F.P. proposes to build and manage a Basement + Ground + Mezzanine + 12 upper floors Residence building on the plot. This facility will cater to the needs of Zaireen by providing modern, comfortable and affordable accommodation for individuals and families, within walking distance from the Haramain in Karbala. The Proposal “The project aims to incorporate the best in terms of construction and building practices, sustainability green building codes and RO purified water throughout the facility.” The Al Qasr Residence building will provide around 129 rooms including family rooms that would allow Zaireen to perform Ziarat with total peace of mind. The facility will also incorporate features such as a coffee shop on the mezzanine floor, as well as a convenience store on the ground level. 16 The Proposal 17 Features Costing The project will have the following features: Proposed Basement + Ground + Mezzanine + 11 upper floors + Building • Within walking and wheel-chair distance to the Haramain in Karbala. Allah (SWT) will reward him with multiples of what he spends and will protect him from calamities, and will protect him and his wealth and family” Donations Alhamdolillah the Office of His Eminence Grand Ayatullah Syed Ali Huseini Al Sistani (DA) has supported this project by contributing US$100,000 towards it, however he has advised that we cannot accept Khums contributions at present.
