We have a terrific run of baseball card singles and sets, one of our best offerings ever of baseball autographs, some truly great baseball memorabilia, including more Christy Mathewson personal items and several high quality rings, with note to a 1948 Indians and a 1979 Orioles. We have a terrific run of better 1930s through 1960s non-sports sets, many clean football sets from the 1950s and 1960s and several higher quality hockey singles and sets from the 1950s through the 1970s that close out the auction. The auction begins with a legitimately historic offering, a PSA 5 (st) example of the legendary T210 Old Mill Shoeless Joe Jackson card. Among the rarest cards of a top player, this example is not even on the VCP site and we believe is the highest graded. The auction continues with a 1915 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson in a PSA 4.5 grade and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in a PSA Authentic holder. Baseball cards offer a good run of sets and lots, with note to a near-set of SGC graded T206 commons, a graded Southern Leaguer run, quality graded lots of 1949 Bowmans and our usual selection of 1950s through 1970s sets. Unopened collectors will see many great lots, including a 1982 Topps vending case and 1982 and 1983 Topps wax cases among others. Notable individual baseball card lots include virtually every HOFer from the legendary 1915 Cracker Jack set and a D329 Weil Baking Ty Cobb. Baseball memorabilia collectors will see rare 1916 and 1917 World Series press pins from Christy Mathewson, a personal Christy Mathewson 1923 New York Giants sterling silver pass and his 1925 Golden Jubilee pass. We have many quality rings, our best run ever, including a 1948 Indians (the last Indian team to win the World Series), a 1967 Red Sox, 1979 Orioles, 1983 Phillies and MLB Alumni rings from Reggie Jackson and George Scott. Baseball autographs are perhaps the heart of the auction. This section is anchored by a simply amazing 40-year collection from a hobby old timer, will all sorts of wonderful items that have not seen the light of day in decades. Of special note are some truly stunning ORIGINAL ARTWORKS that go back to the 1930s of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner among other legends. There are some terrific lots of vintage signed cards, many outstanding earlier HOFer cuts and 3x5s and an amazing debut collection that goes back to 1900, with thousands of items, all being sold by the decade with ridiculously low minimum bids. Baseball autographs also feature a great 1941 imperial size Harry M. Stevens 50th anniversary Hot Dog celebration that has 100 signatures including Babe Ruth, many terrific signed photos and letters, a stunning 1977 Yankees oversize team sheet with a Mint Thurman Munson and virtually everyone else and some great signed Yellow HOF Plaques: Dave Bancroft, Roy Campanella and two Jackie Robinson’s among so much more. Single signed baseballs include a high grade Ty Cobb, a bold Rogers Hornsby and a terrific Thurman Munson. Team balls go back to the 1920s, with many high grade vintage Championship and other desirable signed balls. Historical and entertainment autograph collectors will see many very interesting autographs from an incredible vintage scrapbook consignment. Autographs include an incredible FDR Supreme Court piece, Amelia Earhart, an Alfred Hitchcock signed sketch and many unique earlier autographs. Non-sports collectors should really enjoy this auction, we have sets of 1934 Skybirds, 1938 Don’t Let It Happen Over Here, 1939 War News Pictures, 1950 Freedom’s War and 1954 World on Wheels among so many others. Football collectors will see a nice run of sets from 1948 – 1970, a stunning 1954 Bowman wax box with 118 packs from the famed Paris, Tennesse find decades ago, a great Goal Line lot and some nice rings. Hockey collectors will see higher grade sets from 1954-1979, a Bobby Orr Rookie and second-year and many PSA 7 – PSA 9 examples of key Rookie Cards. 4 We want to thank our many loyal consignors and bidders for making this auction possible. oct2016auction final.indd 4 9/2/16 1:16 PM Clean Sweep Auctions #237 CLOSES WEDNESDAY October 5, 2016 at 11 PM EST w/ the ten minute rule www.cleansweepauctions.com E-mail: [email protected] 9 AM - 5 PM EST Monday - Friday (516) 338 - 8557 FAX: (516) 338 - 8559 **99 Seaview Blvd Suite 350 Port Washington, New York 11050** Rules of the Auction: 1. PSA 5 st ..........................................30000 Among the handful of cards that can be reasonably argued to be the greatest of all baseball cards ever produced, this is an extremely rare card of none other than Shoeless Joe Jackson. A truly tragic figure, immortalized in film and in prose, Jackson remains among the most famous and adored baseball players to ever play the game. An almost mythic figure, he has very few cards and this is by far the king of his cards. Issued in 1910, Jackson got off to a very slow start (5 games in 1908, 5 games in 1909 and 20 games in 1910) in his otherwise amazing career (.356 career average among so much more), he played 136 games for the New Orleans Pelicans AAA team, batting .354. The offered card is fresh to market and does not even appear on the VCP web site. Issued as part of an enormous Minor League set with distinctive red or orange borders, this is a higher series card that is almost famously rare (the entire series is quite scarce as well). This issue does not even appear on the PSA population report, it is that scarce. As for prior sales, so few examples show up from the past 8 eight years that we will list them all here: PSA Authentic Altered: ($56,028 in 11/15 and $102,000 in 12/08) SGC Authentic: ($68,712 in 5/14) PSA 2: (same card for $96,631 in 12/12 and $83,650 on 7/15), $111,625 on 5/10, $83,810 on 7/09 SGC 2: (same card sold for $83,650 on 7/15 and $96,631 on 12/12) SGC 3: ($168,000 on 4/15) PSA 3.5: ($199,750 on 5/11). As with all old cards, each of these has their good and bad aspects but the key point is that the offered card IS TWO GRADES above anything else that has traded and is almost certainly the nicest example in a graded holder. Very well centered, this has rich red borders, a perfectly clean and fine image and a clean surface. The corners show only mild and consistent wear, the red borders present very well; there is the faintest of paper wrinkles by the left border, not something you can really see except with magnification. The generic back HAS NO DAMAGE OR PAPER LOSS, there is a slight stamp and evidence of possible one-time scrapbook removal, it is again not bad at all. The recent explosion in prices for trophy cards make this appear to be a truly historic bargain when compared to a PSA 5 1952 Topps Mantle trading for $125,000, PSA 7s for nearly $200,000 and PSA 8s for $500,000 plus and other recent prices for other trophy cards (including an E90-1 Jackson in a PSA 8 that apparently sold for $500,000). The offered card, we would respectfully argue, is far rarer and better than those cards given the player and incredibly limited supply. This will of course not be an inexpensive purchase, but this auction offers the winning bidder an almost historic opportunity to add a fresh, top grade example of one of the cornerstone baseball cards to their collection. 6 oct2016auction final.indd 6 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction 7 oct2016auction final.indd 7 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 107 1915 Cracker Jack 103 Shoeless Joe Jackson PSA 4.5.....................4500 Revered card, truly iconic, one of the most popular baseball cards ever produced. Fresh to the hobby, this is a very attractive mid-grade example. This vital card has perfect image quality, good color, clean borders and is reasonably well centered (many of these are significantly off-center). The corners are just shy of Ex and show mild and consistent wear only. The back is clean overall, some stray pencil writing was erased at one time, this otherwise looks great. Solid mid-grade card, this is such a hot card in this market and as one of the most iconic cards in the hobby, this is certainly worthy of serious attention. Who wants to own one of the most famous cards ever produced? 8 oct2016auction final.indd 8 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 156 1952 Topps311 Mickey Mantle PSA Authentic....................5000 The hottest card in the world right now, an iconic and important baseball card from the ultimate Topps set. This one will not run six figures. Fresh to the hobby, this has has the most minimal possible creasing, more like wrinkling, a good image and rich color. There is a very subtle pinhole in Mickey's hat and some natural toning on the borders. The back is clean, this is centered mildly to the right border. We are not sure why this did not get a numeric grade, possibly because this may have been removed from a scrapbook (although again there is no back damage). A pleasing example of this important baseball card, I am sure this will not be cheap but it will not require a second mortgage. 9 oct2016auction final.indd 9 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards Baseball Card Sets & Lots 2 1909 T206 Collection of 73 different commons GVG............ 750 Clean lower grade lot of T206 commons, with a few tougher cards. Condition ranges from Fair-Good to VG Plus, mainly Good and GVG. No rare backs, but these cards are all pleasing cards with honest wear, nothing is abused or terribly worn. Lots like this have become hard to find due to grading. An exact listing of cards will be on our web site. Very good lot of its type. 3 1909 T206 Collection of 47 Different SGC Graded Southern Leaguers (SMR $6000).............. 2500 Among the great values in tobacco cards, these seem ridiculously cheap to us in this market. The SMR seems almost comical, listing 2s at all of $55 and 3s at $110. Fresh lot, these present very well for the grade. An exact listing will be on our web site. By grade, the lot breaks down as follows: SGC 5 (3), SGC 4.5 (1), SGC 4 (7), SGC 3.5 (2), SGC 3 (15), SGC 2.5 (1), SGC 2 (15) and SGC 1.5 (3). In addition to possibly getting a great deal, this great lot will save a set collector so much time and effort as all of these tough cards can be had in one shot. 4 1909 T206 Collection of 350 Different SGC Graded Cards (SMR $25,961) ................ 10000 A terrific collection of well matched T206 commons, something that remains white-hot in this market. Colorful and attractive lot, these are nice cards. Lots of value here, who wants to save oceans of time and shipping costs versus buying these one or two at a time? An exact listing will be on our web site. There are no rare backs. By grade, the lot is as follows: 5.5 (12), 5 (64), 4.5 (10), 4 (75), 3.5 (6), 3 (103), 3 mk (1), 2 (44), 1.5 (21), 1 (9) and Authentic (5). The large number of 4s and 5s make this an especially desirable lot. 10 oct2016auction final.indd 10 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 5 1921 Exhibit Set -3 w/all HOFers Poor-Good..... 200 Certainly not something to get slabbed, these are some heavily loved Exhibit cards. The cards have extensive corner wear, some have heavy creasing as well, but they are not abused and the blank backs are generally clean. An incredible value even in this grade, as this classic 64-card boasts no less than 20 HOFers! The set is missing three commons, Dauss, Williams and Wingo. The HOF selection is incredible, with Ruth, Cobb, Johnson, Hornsby, Speaker, Collins, Sisler and Alexander among so many others. If you are not into condition and want a star powered pre-war card set, your ship has come in with this lot! 8 1949 Bowman Collection of 29 different PSA 7s (SMR $1,054)w/11 high #s PSA 7........... 400 Strong lot of 1949 Bowmans, all fine PSA 7s with no qualifiers. Such an attractive issue in this quality, the SMR seems so low at $28 for low numbers and $50 for high numbers. The card #s are as follows: 7, 8, 12, 20, 22, 25, 37, 42, 45, 51, 59, 68, 74, 76, 77, 116, 126, 136, 151, 166, 173, 182, 188, 192, 200, 218, 223, 231, 239. 6 1928 Zeenut 84 different commons Good - VG... 500 Collectible Zeenut issue, this has a nice clean design. While no Zeenut cards are ever high grade, this lot is about half VG or better, which is actually really good for Zeenuts. The balance of the set averages a pleasing Good to GVG, there are not very many really weak cards (only seven cards in the lot have writing on the back). No real stars, a handful of players look to have become Major Leaguers, and there are at least two potential Jewish players (Jacobs, Roth). Overall, not a bad lot at all of Zeenut cards. 9 1949 Bowman Collection of 152 different PSA Graded Cards (SMR $2,506) w/75 High Numbers! .................. 1000 A solid percentage of the classic 1949 Bowman set, these are so undervalued right now in graded holders. The high numbers in particular are ridiculous in the SMR, 5s for $18 and 6s for $28 and 7s for $50. A tremendous value, this lot breaks down by grade as follows: PSA 6.5 (4), PSA 6 (54), PSA 6 mk (2), PSA 5.5 (10), PSA 5 (41), PSA 4.5 (5), PSA 4 (25), PSA 3 (5), PSA 2.5 (3), PSA 2 (2) and PSA 1 (1). The high numbers make this lot an incredible deal. An exact listing will be on our website. 7 1934 World Wide Gum 69 different w/11 HOFersPoor-Good.. 350 Underrated set, this is an excellent starter set for a lower grade set. The cards are about half Poor, half Good but they retain their original color and the backs are generally clean, which is unusual for these grades. The better cards are as follows: 1 Rogers Horsby Poor, 4 Rabbit Maranville SGC 1.5, 16 Herb Pennock Fair, 24 Travis C. Jackson Fair-Good, 32 Eppa Rixey Poor-Fair, 44 Jesse Haines GVG, 57 Charley Gehringer Poor, 69 Leo Durocher Good, 70 Floyd Vaughan Fair-Good, 78 Charles (Chick) Hafey Poor, 84 Luke Appling Fair-Good and 93 George Earnshaw SGC 2.5. 10 1951 Berk Ross Complete Set -1 NM.............. 375 Very strong and fresh set, one of the nicest we have handled. This checks in at 72 cards, with baseball and all of the major sports included. The centering if off as always, about 5060% reasonably well centered, the others in the 75/25 range. This is a very good set as it is anchored by PSA 7s of many of the keys: DiMaggio, Ford Rookie and Musial; Berra came back a PSA 6. The Cousy RC came back an 8 and is being offered as a single lot. The other better cards are as follows: Ashburn Ex+, Hogan Ex-Mt, J. Owens Ex-Mt, Rizzuto NM, Roberts, R NM, Sugar Ray Robinson Ex-Mt+ oc, Sharman 11 Ex-Mt and Spahn Ex-Mt. oct2016auction final.indd 11 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 11 1951 Bowman Complete Set -3 w/Williams & Ford VG w/many nicer......... 1500 Missing only Mantle, Mays and #125, this is not a bad set at all. Condition is about half VG, 30-45% VG-Ex and the balance Good. Collected by someone on a budget, nothing is abused or terrible, but this set could benefit from some TLC. The high numbers are also not bad at all, perhaps half VG-Ex with a few in need of an upgrade. The backs are very clean overall, this is a fine looking collector-grade example of one of the greatest baseball card sets ever produced. Such an amazing value in this grade, you almost have to pick this up if you have a Mantle. The key cards are as follows: 1 Ford RC Fair, 2 Berra VG, 7 Hodges VG+, 26 Rizzuto VG, 30 Feller VG, 31 Campanella VG-Ex/Ex, 32 Snider VG, 80 Reese VG, 122 Garagiola RC VG-Ex/Ex, 134 Spahn Good, 165 Williams Good, 186 Ashburn VG, 198 M Irvin RC VG+, 232 N Fox RC Good, 254 Jensen RC VG, 260 Erskine RC VG+, 282 Frisch Good, 290 Dickey VG, 295 Al Lopez VG, 306 Piersall RC Good and 324 Pramesa RC VG-Ex. 12 1952 Wheaties Full Panel w/10 cards including Mikan & Musial Ex................ 150 Attractive full panel has the image of Ted Williams at the top, with 10 cards. Solid content, condition is nice, a fine wrinkle can be felt but not seen on Stan Musial, Sam Snead has a tiny chip at the lower right corner, the others appear to be quite clean and fine. 14 1953 Topps Collection of 27 PSA Graded Cards w/3 7s (undergraded lot) .................... 400 These are the kind of cards that make many people despise grading companies. Offered are uniformly clean and crisp cards that look to be Near Mint or awfully close to Near Mint. These tend to have exceptionally minute bank wrinkles or some other very minute technical defect. These are generally well centered, with good color, no chipping issues and square corners. An exact listing will be on our website, again these cards look much, much, much better than their very harsh technical grades. SMR is a very low $507. 12 oct2016auction final.indd 12 13 1953 Bowman Color Complete Set VG to VG-Ex... 1000 Somewhat mixed but ultimately pleasing set, this is an affordable example of this beloved, even iconic 1950s Bowman baseball issue. The clean unique design makes these so popular among collectors. Loaded with great images of classic stars, this set, while admittedly low grade, offers a nice vintage look and will not run five figures. Condition varies from Good to Ex-Mt, but is mainly VG to VG-Ex, perhaps 40% VG-Ex or better, 40% VG, the balance Good. The key high number run is one of the strong points of the set. An amazing value to dealers like me as the many key stars offer a huge breakdown potential. The key cards are as follows: 1 Williams VG-Ex, 9 Rizzuto VG, 10 Ashburn Ex-Mt+, 18 N Fox Ex-Mt, 32 Musial VG-Ex, 33 Reese VG, 44 Bauer/Berra/ Mantle VG, 46 Campy Fair, 59 Mantle Good, 65 R Roberts GVG, 92 Hodges VG-Ex, 93 Rizzuto/Martin VG, 97 E Mathews VG, 99 Spahn VG-Ex, 114 Feller VG+, 117 Snider VG-Ex/Ex, 118 B Martin VG, 121 Berra Good, 146 E Wynn VG, 153 W Ford Good and 160 C Abrams Good. 15 1953 Topps Complete Set Ex.............. 1800 Classic and beloved Topps set, one of the most unique and interesting ever produced given the original artwork. Usually found in terrible condition, the offered set is a very respectable and well collected mid-grade exemplar. A difficult set to assign a single grade to as it is a good bit mixed on a technical level (slight creasing, minute corner flaws etc) but the cards present aesthetically as Ex overall. The high numbers are a step below the rest of the set, more like VG to VG-Ex but they still display well. With the recent price explosion, the value of just the graded Mantle, Mays and Paige cards is almost $2,000, providing for a break value in the $5,000 plus range (which also means it would certainly cost at least that much to build a comparable set). The many key cards are as follows: 1 J Robinson Ex, 27 Campanella Ex+, 37 Mathews VG+, 54 Feller Ex++, 61 Wynn Ex+, 76 Reese VG, 82 Mantle SGC 2.5 (bright card is well centered with no creases and clean, slight pencil or ink has been erased at the very top of the back, awfully nice card for the grade), 86 Martin Ex++ , 104 Berra VG, 114 Rizzuto VG, 147 Spahn VG-Ex/Ex, 191 Kiner Ex-Mt+, 207 Ford Ex, 220 Paige SGC 5, 225 Shantz GVG, 228 Newhouser VG+, 242 Silvera VG+, 244 Mays PSA 3.5, 258 Gilliam GVG, 263 Podres VG, 265 Jensen Good, 273 Haddix RC VG+ and 280 Bolling RC VG-Ex. 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 16 1954 Bowman Complete Set w/Mantle & Williams Graded 5s Ex to Ex-Mt....... 1500 One of my personal favorites, this is a set that does not seem to get any respect. Extremely colorful and attractive issue, the cards in the offered set are all in individual holders. Condition varies somewhat, but appears to our eyes to be about 40% Ex-Mt, 40% or more Ex to Ex Plus and the balance a nice VG-Ex (usually presenting better but with a small technical flaw). In short, this is an extremely clean and fine mid to better grade 1954 Bowman set. Even better, this is anchored by a graded 5s of the Ted Williams card that is almost always missing from these sets and a well centered 5 Mantle, which is very unusual. The key cards are as follows: 1 Rizzuto PSA 5, 6 N Fox PSA 5, 15 Ashburn VG-Ex, 45 Kiner PSA 4, 58 Reese Ex+, 62 Slaughter PSA 6, 64 Mathews PSA 5, 65 Mantle PSA 5 (ctd), 66.1 Williams SGC 5, 66.2 Piersall Ex, 89 Mays VG-Ex/Ex (clean w/slight nick by bottom right corner), 90 Campanella PSA 5, 101 Larsen RC VG-Ex/Ex, 132 Feller PSA 7, 138 Hodges SGC 5, 145 Martin PSA 6 mk, 161 Berra Ex Ctd, 170 Snider Ex+ and 177 Ford PSA 6. Ideal set for the grade, there are 20 PSA graded commons/minor stars w/2 7s and several 6s (but also 5s and 2s). The SMR on just the graded cards is just over $2,000, providing for some real value here (also please note the Mantle at $500 and the Williams at $900 are both VERY conservative). 17 1954 Red Man Complete Set -3 VG-Ex/Ex.... 195 Fun and eminently affordable 1950s set, two cards have the tab, Mays and White. The set presents as a colorful Ex Plus to Ex-Mt overall but many cards have surface wrinkles and other minute technical flaws (some are still Ex-Mt however). Missing Kell Chicago, Philley Philadelphia and Slaughter, the keys are as follows: 4.1 George Kell (Boston) Ex, 5.2 Monte Irvin VG-Ex/Ex, 6.1 Sam Mele (Chicago) Ex, 6.1 Sam Mele (Baltimore) VG+, 9.1 Dave Philley (Philadelphia) Good, 13.2 Roy Campanella VG-Ex, 15.2 Pee Wee Reese NM, 16.1 Ed Whitey Ford VG+, 16.2 Edwin Duke Snider Ex++, 17.1 Phil Rizzuto Ex-Mt+, 19.2 Gus Bell VG-Ex/Ex, 20.1 Larry Yogi Berra VG-Ex and 25.2 Willie Mays VG-Ex/ Ex. oct2016auction final.indd 13 18 1954 Topps Lot of 43 different PSA Graded Cards .................... 450 These are the kind of cards that make many people despise grading companies. Offered are uniformly sharp, clean and crisp cards that came from a real hobby old timer who collected these in the early 1980s. These tend to have exceptionally minute bank wrinkles, the fronts look Near Mint to our eyes. Among the cleanest 1954 Topps cards we have seen, this is a very smart buy if you want sharp 54s and do not want to get started with PSA 8s. An exact listing will be on our website, again these cards look much, much, much better than their very harsh technical grades. SMR is $718. 19 1955 Armour Coins Near-Set (16 diff) w/Mantle Error PSA 7.................... 200 Strong lot, these are a solid Near Mint overall. Exact content will be on our web site, this lot includes the Mantle Errror in a PSA 7, Reese, Spahn, Ford and Berra. This should not be very hard to complete. 20 1955 Bowman Complete Set Ex (some variance).... 900 Mixed set from an old timer, cards range from VG to Ex-Mt, averaging Ex or very close to Ex. The basic series looks to be about 25% Ex-Mt, 30-35% Ex, the balance mostly VG or VG-Ex. The high numbers are nicer, more like 50% ExMt or better, the balance in the VG-Ex range. Most of the umpire cards are very strong. Classic set, one of my personal favorites with its strong player selection and umpire run, the key cards are as follows: 1 Wilhelm VG-Ex/Ex, 10 Rizzuto Ex++, 22 Campanella VG-Ex/Ex, 23 Kaline VG-Ex/Ex, 37 Reese VG+, 59 Ford VG-Ex, 68 Howard RC VG-Ex/Ex, 103 Mathews Ex, 134 Feller VG+, 168 Berra Ex-Mt, 179 Aaron VG-Ex/Ex, 184 Mays Ex-Mt, 202 Mantle Ex, 242 Banks VGEx/Ex, 265 Barlick RC Ex-Mt+, 267 Honochick RC VG-Ex/ Ex, 283 Chylak Ex++, 303 Conlan RC NM and 13 315 Hubbard VG-Ex/Ex. 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 21 1955 Red Man Complete Set Ex................ 180 Mixed but nice set, cards are about 35% Ex-Mt or better, 4050% Ex or VG-Ex/Ex, the balance VG to VG-Ex. Not bad at all, this displays very well. The keys are as follows: 1.2 Richie Ashburn Ex+, 3.1 Ed Whitey Ford Ex-Mt+, 3.2 Gil Hodges Ex, 4.1 Nelson Fox Ex, 7.2 Willie Mays VG-Ex/Ex, 8.1 Bob Lemon Ex, 10.2 Warren Spahn VG-Ex/Ex, 12.2 Hoyt Wilhelm VG-Ex/Ex, 14.1 Early Wynn VG-Ex/Ex, 16.1 Larry Yogi Berra NM, 17.2 Pee Wee Reese VG+, 18.1 Larry Doby NM and 19.2 Duke Snider Ex-Mt+. 22 1955Topps Salesman Sample Panel w/Jackie Robinson!................ 200 Super, super cool item, offered is an original 3-card Topps Salesman Sample strip from one of the best years, 1955. This is special as it has a Jackie Robinson card at the top from his only World Championship season (the other two cards are Taylor and Roberts). This has the proper advertisement on the back center (with some loss) and displays very well. PSA apparently does not grade these, but this appears to be VG-Ex or better to us as there are no creases (this is without respect to wear on the paper advertisement). Either way, a great item that you just never see, this should be of interest to oddball Topps collectors and Jackie/Dodger collectors. 23 1956 Artvue Black White HOF Plaques Near-Set (74 different) NM to Nm-Mt............ 450 Super sharp and fresh run, these are bright, crisp and exceptionally clean. Al are unmailed, the backs look great. Better pieces in this lot include: Jackie Robinson, Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Eddie Plank, Al Simmons, Buck Ewing, Cap Anson (type 1), Lefty Grove and Tris Speaker. The condition, a conservative NM to Nm-Mt overall, makes these special. It would be hard to imagine a cleaner or sharper lot than these. 14 oct2016auction final.indd 14 24 1958 Topps Complete Set VG-Ex/Ex.... 960 Exceedingly consistent set, these have great color and were collected by a smart old time collector with a very good eye. If you are looking for a problem-free mid-grade 58 set, it would very, very hard to do better than the offered lot. Absolutely problem-free set, the key cards are as follows: 1 Williams VG-Ex, 5 Mays VG-Ex, 25 Drysdale Ex-Mt, 30.1 Aaron VG-Ex, 47 Maris RC VG-Ex/Ex, 52.1 Bob Clemente VG-Ex/Ex, 70.1 Al Kaline Ex++, 150 Mantle VG-Ex, 187 Koufax VG-Ex/Ex, 246 Yanks TC VG+, 285 F Robby Ex, 288 Killebrew VG-Ex/Ex, 307 B Robby Ex+, 310 Banks VG-Ex, 321 Klu/Williams Ex-Mt, 343 Cepeda RC VG-Ex/Ex, 370 Berra VG-Ex/Ex, 418 Mantle/Aaron VG-Ex, 436 Mays/Snider Ex, 485 Williams AS VG and 487 Mantle AS VG+. 25 1959 Fleer Complete Set w/#68 NM to Nm-Mt...... 420 Always a desirable set, the offered set is notable as it includes a very strong PSA 6 example of the key Ted Signs card that is almost always missing from these sets. In addition, we sent these cards to PSA and they came back as follows: 11 1935 - With Jimmie Foxx 5, 21 Honors for Williams 8, 24 1945 Sharpshooter 8, 28 The Williams Shift 8, 43 Double Play Lead 8, 50 1954 Spring Injury 8, 58 Williams Hits .388 9, 63 All Star Record 8, 67 With Sammy Snead 8 and 75 With Babe Ruth 7. The SMR on just the 11 graded cards is $845 (with note to the absurdly low $350 for the #68 card in a PSA 6). The rest of the cards are almost all a very solid NM to Nm-Mt (maybe with some potential 9s) and look terrific. Very fine set. 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 26 1959 Topps Complete Set VG-Ex/Ex.... 900 Classically mixed set, cards go from VG to Ex-Mt. With that disclosed, there are a fair number of clean Ex-Mt cards, including stars, perhaps 25% of the set, the balance is about 20-30% Ex, the rest VG or VG-Ex. The high numbers are a half grade better than the rest of the set, Ex overall with many nicer cards (and some weaker cards too). Perfectly acceptable mid-grade set, easily upgraded if desired, the keys are as follows: 1 Frick RC COMM Ex+, 10 Mantle VG, 50 Mays Ex, 150 Musial Ex, 163 Koufax VG, 202 Maris VGEx/Ex, 380 Aaron VG-Ex, 461 Mickey Mantle HR Ex, 478 Clemente VG-Ex/Ex, 510 Yankees TC VG-Ex/Ex mk, 514 Bob Gibson RC Ex o/c, 515 Harmon Killebrew VG-Ex/Ex, 543 Trio/Clemente Ex+, 550 Campanella VG, 561 Aaron AS Ex, 563 Mays AS VG and 564 Mantle AS VG+. 27 1959 Topps Complete Set w/Mantle SGC 7, Gibson SGC 7.5 Ex-Mt/NM....... 2000 Such a good set when it can be found in high grade, there seem to be an almost endless number of stars and specials. This set is notable in that it is anchored by two terrific key cards, an SGC 7 #10 Mantle and an SGC 7.5 #514 Gibson Rookie. Condition is very nice, about 60-65% Near Mint or awfully close to Near Mint, the balance almost entirely a strong Ex-Mt or Ex-Mt Plus. The high numbers are a solid Near Mint overall and very clean. In short, this is an extremely nice set that was carefully collected and with a special eye for centering. A fun, higher quality 59 set to peruse, this looks terrific. The key cards are as follows: 10 Mantle SGC 7, 40.2 Warren Spahn (1921) NM, 50 Mays ExMt, 150 Musial PSA 5, 163 Koufax Ex-Mt+, 202 Maris PSA 6.5, 350 Banks PSA 7, 380 Aaron NM, 387 Drysdale PSA 7.5, 461 Mickey Mantle HR SCD 6.5, 463 Kaline Champ PSA 7, 467 Aaron Clubs HR PSA 7, 469 Banks Hustler PSA 7, 478 Clemente PSA 6, 510 Yankees TC Ex-Mt+, 514 Bob Gibson RC SGC 7.5, 515 Harmon Killebrew GAI 6.5, 543 Trio/ Clemente NM+, 550 Campanella Ex-Mt+, 561 Aaron AS ExMt+, 563 Mays AS NM, 564 Mantle AS PSA 5, 556 Fox AS PSA 7 and 559 Banks AS PSA 6. oct2016auction final.indd 15 28 1960 Fleer Complete Set Ex-Mt.......... 150 Sharp and bright looking set, 70% is reasonably well centered, maybe a little more, the balance is basically sharp but with the usual poor centering. There should be some Nm-Mt cards in here, the Wagner we submitted from this set came back an 8. The key cards are as follows: 1 Nap Lajoie Ex-Mt, 2 Christy Mathewson NM, 3 Babe Ruth NM oc, 6 Walter Johnson NM oc, 28 Lou Gehrig PSA 7, 42 Ty Cobb Ex+, 47 Cy Young NM oc, 62 Honus Wagner PSA 8 and 72 Ted Williams PSA 4 (looks much nicer). 29 1960 Leaf Complete Set NM.............. 500 Good value set, this has a substantial breakdown value with the large high number run. The low numbers are about half Near Mint, the balance mostly Ex-Mt or Ex-Mt Plus. The high numbers contain 18 graded cards, mostly PSA 7s. The ungraded high numbers are similar to the low numbers, about half Near Mint, half Ex-Mt/Plus with some weaker. The keys and graded cards are as follows: 1 Aparicio Ex-Mt, 25 Grant Correct Ex-Mt+, 27 B Robby NM, 37 Snider NM, 73 PSA 7, 74 PSA 6, 75 Culp RC PSA 7, 78 PSA 7, 79 PSA 6, 84 PSA 7, 86 PSA 7, 87 PSA 7, 94 Two Hal Smiths NM, 96 PSA 7, 97 PSA 8 st, 99 PSA 7, 103 PSA 7, 105 PSA 7, 114 PSA 8, 115 Tanner Ex, 117 PSA 7, 121 PSA 7, 123 PSA 7, 125 Anderson Ex, 128 Cepeda Ex++, 133 PSA 8 st, 141 Flood Ex+ and 144 Bunning Ex-Mt w/fine vintage signature. 31 1961 Fleer Complete Set Ex+ to Ex-Mt............ 240 Fun set has an underrated high number run that is not so easy to complete. Loaded with stars and HOFers, fun viewing here. Condition is consistently Ex Plus to Ex-Mt with only very mild variance. The high numbers are very bright and clean, about 75% Ex-Mt or better. Nice mid to better grade set, the keys are as follows: 1 Baker, Cobb, Wheat Ex, 14 Ty Cobb Ex, 31 Gehrig Ex, 75 Ruth VG-Ex/Ex, 89 Sisler/ Traynor Ex-Mt, 120 Lajoie Ex++, 135 Plank Ex, 144 Pie Traynor Ex-Mt, 150 Wagner Ex+, 152 Ted Williams VG-Ex/ Ex and 153 Young Ex. 15 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 30 1960 Topps Complete Set Ex+............ 1100 Attractive set, among the best centered examples we have seen in some time. Condition varies mildly, set is about half Ex-Mt, possible more, the balance almost all in the VG-Ex to Ex range, these are nice cards. The key high number run is a very strong Ex-Mt overall, providing for some serious value. A simple project to upgrade if desired, but as it stands, this is a very solid set for the grade. The key cards are as follows (some of the VG-Ex/Ex cards appear Ex-Mt+ but have a tiny wrinkle or other technical defect): 148 Yaz RC Ex-Mt, 160 Mantle/Boyer Ex+, 200 Mays Ex-Mt, 250 Musial VG-Ex/Ex, 300 Aaron VG-Ex, 316 McCovey RC Ex++, 326 Clemente Ex-Mt+, 332 Yankees TC Ex-Mt+, 343 Koufax VG-Ex/Ex, 350 Mantle Ex, 377 Maris VG-Ex/Ex, 480 Berra Ex-Mt+, 563 Mantle AS Ex-Mt+, 564 Mays AS Ex-Mt+, 565 Maris AS Ex and 566 Aaron AS Ex. 32 1961 Post Cereal Complete Set w/some variations (225 pcs) Ex-Mt/NM w/nicer............ 750 Very desirable set in this quality, the offered set was assembled decades ago by a hobby old timer. Truly an exceptional set, this is almost certainly the nicest one that we have ever handled. As well cut as we have found, the key cards are especially strong. The backs are clean, amazingly only five have writing. We did not attempt to grade anything, but this is something that should be previewed if this is an option. The key cards are as follows: 4.2 Mickey Mantle (company) Ex, 5 Bob Turley (company) Ex++, 7.1 Roger Maris (box) Ex-Mt+, 10 Gil McDougald (box) Ex-Mt+, 23 Bob Shaw (box) Ex-Mt+, 55.2 Frank Sullivan (company, Phillies) VGEx/Ex, 73 Chuck Estrada (company) Ex-Mt, 75.1 Brooks Robinson (box) Ex-Mt+, 92.1 Harmon Killebrew (box, Minneapolis) Ex, 94 Chuck Stobbs (company) NM, 106 Ed Mathews (company) Ex-Mt, 107.1 Hank Aaron (box) ExMt+, 132.2 Bob Clemente (company) Ex-Mt, 135 Bill Virdon (box) Ex-Mt+, 145.2 Willie Mays (company) Ex-Mt+, 163 Mel Roach (box) Ex-Mt+ and 183 Roy McMillan (box) NM. 16 oct2016auction final.indd 16 33 1961 Topps Complete Set Ex-Mt........ 1600 Classic 1960s Topps set, beloved by dealers for its large number of stars and very valuable high number run, allowing for a very substantial breakdown value. The offered set is a very solid Ex-Mt overall. The main series cards are about 70% Ex-Mt or better, the balance is about Ex. There are off-center cards as is typical, as well as many terrific well centered cards. The high numbers are solid and clean, easily Ex-Mt overall, with only a handful of lower grade cards. The key cards are as follows: 2 Maris Ex+ Ctd, 44 Mantle/ Maris/Colav LL NM, 150 Mays Ex-Mt, 290 Musial NM Ctd, 300 Mantle Ex, 307 Mantle WS2 Ex-Mt+, 344 Koufax Ex+, 388 Clemente NM, 405 Gehrig Streak Ex-Mt+, 406 Mantle 565’ HR NM, 415 Aaron Ex-Mt+, 417 Marichal RC SP Ex-Mt, 425 Berra Ex++, 475 Mantle MVP Ex-Mt, 575 Banks AS NM, 576 Maris AS Ex-Mt, 577 Aaron AS Ex-Mt+, 578 Mantle AS Ex-Mt+, 579 Mays AS Ex-Mt+, 580 Kaline AS Ex-Mt, 581 F. Robinson AS NM, 586 Ford AS Ex-Mt and 589 Spahn AS Ex-Mt. Without getting into a very pricey slabbed set, this is about as good as it gets in this market for a nice set in 9-pocket sheets with square corners, good centering and high quality eye appeal. This is a very nice Ex-Mt 61 set overall. 34 1962 Post Cereal Complete Set w/Jay blue variation (204 pcs) Ex-Mt/NM w/many nicer.......... 400 Good set in this quality, the offered set was assembled decades ago by a hobby old timer. Truly an exceptional set, this is almost certainly the nicest one that we have ever handled as this offers sharp corners and great color borders. As well cut as we have found, the key cards are especially strong. The backs are clean, amazingly none have writing. The expensive Jay blue lines variation hardly ever comes with these sets. An upgrade for almost anyone, the keys are as follows: 5.1 Mantle, Box NM , 5.2 Mantle, Company NM w/slight wrinkle on back, 61 Yaz NM, 69 Keough NM, 83 B Allison Ex-Mt+, 92 Siebern Ex, 101 Hodges NM, 109.2 Koufax, Red Lines around Stats NM, 113 Larker Ex-Mt, 116 G Coleman NM, 124.1 Jay, Blue Lines Stats Ex-Mt, 127 Lynch Ex-Mt, 131 McCovey NM, 140 Marichal NM, 145.1 Adcock, Name Incorrect Ex-Mt+ and 173.2 Clemente, Red Lines Stats Ex-Mt+. This larger set was clearly collected with great care (and success) by the original owner. 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 35 1962 Topps Complete Set + Extra Blue Tints/Variations Ex+ to Ex-Mt................ 960 Really, really nice 62 set, this set is loaded with sharp, well centered cards with no chipping that simply look great. Condition looks to be at least 50% Ex-Mt, and a very highend Ex-Mt at that. The high numbers are very nice overall, a strong offering. Condition overall is about 50% Ex-Mt, 50% Ex to Ex Plus with some lesser among these. Not a hard project to upgrade to a full Ex-Mt set but again this is a very, very nice 62 as offered. A very attractive set when they can be found in this quality, the breakup value is also significant here due to the high numbers and many stars. The many key cards are as follows: 1 Maris VG-Ex/Ex, 5 Koufax VG-Ex/ Ex, 10 Clemente Ex-Mt+, 18 Mantle/Mays Ex-Mt mc, 50 Musial Ex+, 53 Mantle LL Ex++, 199 G Perry RC Ex-Mt, 200 Mantle Ex+ Ctd, 300 Mays Ex-Mt, 313 Maris IA Ex-Mt oc, 318 Mantle IA Ex-Mt oc, 320 Aaron Ex-Mt, 360 Berra Ex oc, 387 Brock RC Ex-Mt, 425 Yaz Ex-Mt Ctd, 471 Mantle AS GAI 3.5, 530 Gibson SP Ex, 544 McCovey SP VG+, 591 McDowell RC VG+, 592 Bouton RC Ex-Mt, 594 Uecker RC Ex++, 596 Pepitone RC VG+ and 598 Hickman RC Ex-Mt. In addition, 28 blue tints and variations are also included, with 458 Buhl no emblem, 174 Willey with cap. 36 1963 Bazooka All Time Greats Complete Set w/color variations Ex-Mt/NM........... 180 42-card set, this one is very sharp and clean. There are several silver color variations, which we hardly ever see. We sent the following cards to PSA: 7 Ed Walsh PSA 3 (silver), 10 Honus Wagner PSA 7, 11 Chief Bender PSA 6 (silver), 12 Walter Johnson PSA 7, 15 Lou Gehrig PSA 6.5, 18 Connie Mack PSA 5 (silver), 23 Jimmy Collins PSA 6 st (silver), 29 Pete Alexander PSA 6 and 35 Ty Cobb PSA 6. The rest of the cards are very sharp, but about 30-40% have the usual heavy off-centering. oct2016auction final.indd 17 37 1963Fleer Complete Set w/unmarked checklist Ex-Mt/NM........ 540 Very strong set from a hobby old timer, these are very sharp, bright white and clean cards. Centering varies as always, but is not bad at all. Ideal and extremely consistent set for the grade, these seem like true bargains at current market levels. Notable for an unmarked checklist (it appears Ex-Mt but has a slight surface crease), the key cards are as follows: 4 B. Robinson NM, 5 Mays Ex Ctd, 8 Yastrzemski Ex-Mt, 41 Drysdale Ex-Mt+, 42 Koufax PSA 6 (ctd, tough grade), 43 Wills RC Ex-Mt+ Ctd, 45 Spahn NM, 46 Adcock SP Ex-Mt, 56 Clemente Ex+, 59 Mazeroski Ex-Mt, 61 Gibson Ex-Mt, 64 Cepeda NM and Checklist SP VG+ unmarked. 39 1964 Topps Complete Set Ex but varies............. 900 A truly mixed set, cards range from Fair to Near Mint. The high numbers vary as well and are not bad at all. This set has a large breakdown value. A very difficult set to assign one grade to, the cards appear to be about half Ex or very close to Ex, the balance mixed. The key cards reflect the variance, and are as follows: 21 Berra VG-Ex/Ex, 29 Brock NM, 50 Mantle SGC 5, 55 Banks NM, 103 Curt Flood Ex-Mt+, 125 Rose VG-Ex, 150 Mays Ex, 200 Koufax SGC 5.5, 210 Yastrzemski VG, 225 Maris SGC 5.5, 230 B Robby VG-Ex/Ex, 250 Kaline Ex+, 260 F Robby VG-Ex/Ex, 287 Conigliaro RC Ex, 300 Aaron SGC 5.5, 306 Mays/Cepeda NM, 331 Mantle/ Maris Et Al VG+, 380 Ford Ex-Mt+, 400 Spahn Ex, 423 Aaron/Mays SGC 6, 433 Yanks TC NM, 440 Clemente VG-Ex/ Ex, 460 Gibson NM, 468 G Perry Ex-Mt+, 540 Aparicio Fair, 541 Niekro RC VG-Ex/Ex, 543 Uecker VG-Ex/Ex, 550 Ken Hubbs VG+ and 570 Mazeroski VG-Ex/Ex. As these cards regularly trade and the fact that many of the keys are graded 5s and higher, this is worthy of serious consideration despite the condition issues as this certainly has a big break value as-is but also is a completely manageable and affordable 17 project to upgrade to a straight Ex set. 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 38 1964 Bazooka Stamps Complete Set in Original Panels Ex-Mt/NM........ 480 Scarce 100-card set has all of the top players of the day. These are very attractive full color stamps. One thing I love about this lot is that they are all in the original 10-card sheets as issued. These have some slight wear from handling, and there is a fine crease near Koufax but these are clean overall. There is some separation on some stamps, please check the scans on our web site. The keys of Mantle and Clemente look great. Rare because of grading, who wants to hunt for some PSA 9s and 10s? 40 Collection of 300 oddball cards w/many Mantles Ex+.............. 150 An instant inventory of oddball 1960s-1970s issues, loaded with stars. Condition ranges from VG-Ex to Ex-Mt/NM and (3) 1970 Topps Super Collection of 32 assorted w/14 HOFers including Clemente, Aaron, Bench, Jackson & Seaver, a nice Ex-Mt overall. Lots and lots of value here! 41 1965 Topps Near-Set (544 different) w/some stars Ex-Mt.......... 390 Very clean lot of 65s, the weaker cards have been removed and this presents as an exceedingly consistent and fine Ex-Mt set with only slight variance. The high numbers are strong. In terms of fine creasing on the cards, they are only visible on Ryan, Jones and Grote. Such a great display item, it is almost amazing that these can still be found in state. One of great 1969 Mets collectibles, any serious Mets collector should have this run. 43 Large 1970-1975 Topps Collection w/key cards (3,309 cards) .................... 300 Bigger lot of cards from the original owner, unpicked, this has lots of stars. The edges are crisp, the color is terrific, the back easel strong as well. This offers a fun oversize image of the beloved Joe DiMaggio. There is only general wear otherwise, this looks great. Signed by Joe DiMaggio in clean blue sharpie on the front, and by creator Bob Laughlin (75) on the reverse. There cannot be more than a handful of these, if that, signed. JSA LOA. 48 1975 Laughlin Super Stand Ups Babe Ruth Ex+....... 240 Fun, bright and clean issue is extremely scarce. With excellent eye appeal, this has a perfect standup on the back that has not been used, bright color and a clean white background. There is hardly any wear, this presents as a very clean Ex Plus. Bob Laughlin is on the back. 49 1975 Topps Complete Set NM to Nm-Mt......... 270 Presented in a Roop Binder (but missing the checklist), offered is a fine Near Mint 1975 Topps set. Cards are presented in the original case as issued, the boxes themselves are clean, the cards tight as bricks, there is absolutely zero indication that these have ever been searched (they are consigned by an old-time collector who bought this at the time). There are 24 boxes at 500 cards per box, so 12,000 total cards, how many Ripken 10s or other condition scarcities could be hiding here? There are no public sales we could see for these, so they are presumably very scarce. This is an exciting full case offering from a desirable year, let’s open this at a paltry $750 and see what happens! oct2016auction final.indd 20 54 1982 Topps Wax Case NM............ 1000 Desirable early 1980s full case, this is fresh to the hobby. In the original case as issued, the boxes themselves show mild wear, so these may have been in a store at one time and put back in the case. The packs are tight, there is no reason to think these were searched (they are consigned by an oldtime collector who bought this at the time). We have seen these retail for $5,000 a case, let’s start things super low to make things interesting! Ripken 10s anyone? Better Old Judge cards seem like a great buy right now. 58McCarthy, Tommy (St. Louis, sliding) PSA 1........... 300 Crisp card has a superb image of this HOFer sliding onto a base, so nice. The card actually has four sharp corners and a generally nice front, but a pinhole at the very top border and glue residue on the reverse keep this at a 1. The kind of 1 most collectors love, the image makes this a great card. 59Serad, Billy SGC 2.......... 300 Scarce card as it is a Toronto, something that does not come around very often. The photo has respectable contrast, the front is quite clean and nice. Glue residue on the back from scrapbook removal keeps this at a very nice 2. 1888 Goodwin Round Album Pages 61Comiskey Ex................ 510 Beautiful page, this has no edge wear, a perfect binding hole and a wonderful oversize image of a very young Charles Comiskey. Great collectibles, these are so undervalued in today’s market. If you need one of these for a high-end HOF type-card collection, than you will want to give this beauty some serious consideration. 62Mutrie, Titcomb, Whitey, Mascot VG-Ex......... 400 Crisp and clean, this is a very evocative 19th century baseball image(s). The condition is a sterling Near Mint overall, unmailed of course, with a gorgeous image on the front. An unrealized value, who wants to own a condition rarity? (PSA has only graded one other card from this set a 7). oct2016auction final.indd 21 Go to www.cleansweepauctions.com for many additional images. The imagery is terrific, the back is clean. 1909-11 T206 Singles 71Clarke (Pitts, holding bat) PSA Authentic (Brown Hindu back)............ 150 A HOFer with a rare back, a slight chip by the upper left corner keeps this at an Authentic grade. The card retains terrific original color and the desirable Hindu back is very nice. 72Cobb (portrait, green bckgrnd) SGC 1.5............... 600 The key HOFer to this great set, these have been so hot in recent years. The offered card is an honest 1.5, there is no back damage nor are there are any technical flaws. The back has a slight stamp by the bottom border and some scraping by the top, still not bad at all overall. 74Speaker SGC 4.5............... 300 Key card, this is the only card of vital HOFer Tris Speaker in the T206 set. There are no visible creases, even under magnification, corner wear is the issue here. The card has the deepest blue background color we have ever seen and a terrific image. The back is a clean Piedmont. 75 1910 Sweet Caporal Pins Cy Young (large letters) PSA 8........... 150 Superb pin is one of the keys to this great set. Well centered with great photo quality, clean surfaces and a full paper back. The edges look great, this is a very fine looking Cy Young pinback from 1910. While not rare, these do seem like great deals in 8 holders in this market. 76 1911 Diamond Gum Pins Babe Adams PSA 5..... 150 Very scarce and desirable pin issue, we do not understand how PSA grades these. The offered piece has a bright paper back, no visible foxing or wear and a very nice front. Likely undergraded, very nice example of a Diamond Gum pin. 77 1912 T202 Triple Folders Evers Makes A Safe Slide (Chance, Tinker) PSA 6.......... 500 Great card, the only vintage card of this legendary HOF trio as players. Not an easy card to find, this has four super sharp corners, bright white borders and great images. Slight off-centering keeps this at a very nice 6. oct2016auction final.indd 22 9/2/16 1:16 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 78 1913 Cravats Pennants Plank, Eddie (rare, uncataloged) NM.............. 600 Rare pennant, these extremely attractive 8 3/4 inch pennants hardly ever come to market. These have vibrant color, a fine image and a mounting hole by the top margin to keep from being damaged. SGC apparently does not assign numerical grades to these, but we feel this should grade Near Mint as it is quite sharp and clean. A real find, this is an uncataloged card for a very popular HOFer, how often does that take place anymore? 79 1913 Cravats Pennants Speaker, Tris NM.............. 285 Rare pennant, these extremely attractive 8 3/4 inch pennants hardly ever come to market. These have vibrant color, a fine image and a mounting hole by the top margin to keep from being damaged. SGC apparently does not assign numerical grades to these, but we feel this should grade Near Mint as it is quite sharp and clean. The color is amazing, this is a unique and terrific image of vital HOFer Tris Speaker that we have not seen until now. How many of you very advanced Red Sox collectors have one of these? 80 1914 B18 Blanket Ty Cobb (white infield) NM.... 200 Exceedingly clean and fine B18, this has a remarkably nice image of Ty Cobb, super clean surfaces, wide borders and sharp corners. Exceptionally well preserved, this has wide borders, sharp edges, a great image and immaculate surfaces. Conservatively graded, it really does not get any nicer than this. Who wants to add this beautiful key B18 of Shoeless Joe to their set? 82 1914 Max Stein Postcard Buck Weaver PSA Authentic....... 150 Great postcard, this has a classic image of this classic Black Sox star. The front is clean, this has been mailed, with a note on the back and some scraping. Fine example of this desirable postcard. 1915 Cracker Jacks 833 Tinker PSA 3..................... 150 Clean card, not sure why this is only a 3, there are no visible creases or wrinkles, the back is clean, the front is nice. There is a spot at the extreme tip of the upper left corner, something with the back may have caused this very tough grade. 846 Plank PSA 2..................... 255 Well centered with good color, a clean image and reasonably clean borders. The back is clean. A crease by the right edge keeps this at a perfectly acceptable 2. One of few cards of HOFer Eddie Gettysburg Plank, perhaps the most popular of all of them, 857 Eddie Collins PSA 3..................... 150 Elusive HOFer, this is well centered with good color, an excellent image and clean surfaces. There are no visible creases or wrinkles, the back has had slight pencil erased and is otherwise clean. This is a very nice card for the grade. oct2016auction final.indd 23 23 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 1915 Cracker Jacks 8614 Crawford PSA 4..................... 180 Well centered with even corner wear, this is a nice card for the grade. The back is reasonably clean, there is one tiny spot on his uniform. 8717 Bresnahan PSA 4..................... 180 Well centered with no creases and even corner wear, good looking card. Slight hints of wear on the back may have led this to grade only a 4. 8818 Evers PSA 2.5.................... 75 Great image, one of my favorites from the set. Well centered, this has a clean front with a slight back wrinkle and erased pencil; strong card for the grade. 8919 Bender PSA 2..................... 105 Nice 2, this has one a fine thumbnail crease on the front by the lower left corner, it otherwise looks great. The back has some mild general wear, not bad at all. Good Cracker Jack HOFer in a very affordable grade. 9023 Comiskey PSA 2..................... 150 Key card of this HOFer and important figure in baseball history. Clean card has no creases or wrinkles, good color and a nice front. One spot of wear on the back probably kept this at a 2, VERY nice card for the grade. 9130 Cobb PSA 2................... 1700 Classic baseball card, these seem so undervalued in today’s market to us. An iconic image of Ty Cobb, this one has perfect focus and looks terrific. The card has no visible creases or wrinkles of any kind, every under magnification. This is centered mildly to the right, the borders are reasonably clean, the back looks good. Pencil was erased on the back, perhaps causing PSA to grade this a somewhat harsh 2. The corners are in the VG-Ex to Ex range, this is definitely a card that could move up in the future. A great piece to hold for some time, this is a vital card of an All Time great player. 9232 Mordecai Brown PSA 3..................... 180 Fairly clean card is centered to the right border with good color and a nice image. A crease at the lower left corner keeps this at a pleasing 3. 9335 Hooper PSA 2..................... 105 Well centered with no creases, a very subtle scrape in the team name by the bottom border keeps this at a 2. Not a bad card at all. 9437 Alexander PSA 4..................... 720 Very, very nice 4, this is well centered with a fine image and no creases or wrinkles. Three corners come to points, the lower right exhibits noticeable wear. The back is clean, with possible pencil erasing causing the grade. The color and image quality are terrific, this is one of very few earlier standard issue cards of legendary HOFer Grover Cleveland Alexander and by far the most attractive. 24 oct2016auction final.indd 24 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 9539 Chick Gandil PSA 2....................... 90 Tough card of this 1919 Black Sox player, these do not come around very often. This has a crease by the lower left corner, but this is still very high-end for the grade. 9643 Marquard PSA 1.5.................... 80 Well centered with a fine image and a clean front, there is hardly any creasing or wear. Slight wear on the bottom of the back keeps this at a very attractive 1.5. 9752 Wheat PSA 2.5.................. 150 Well centered with no creases, the front looks to be at least a 4 and displays really well. The back has a very fine wrinkle and some wear by the bottom from scrapbook removal (there is no paper loss). This looks much, much better than a 2.5. 9857 Walter Johnson PSA 2..................... 800 Key card of perhaps the best pitcher of All Time, this is a very desirable card. Tough grade here, there are no visible creases or wrinkles, even under magnification. The card is reasonably well centered with a clean front, good color and fairly clean borders. This has mild natural toning and wear at the upper left corner. The back appears to be quite clean, pencil was erased at one time but it is very hard to see, perhaps leading to the somewhat harsh 2 grade. Another classic card of a classic player, the tough grade will keep this from running a veritable small fortune. 9966 Lajoie PSA 2.5.................. 225 Elusive card, these seem so undervalued to us. Reasonably well centered, there are no creases or wrinkles on either side of the card. The image is nice, the color is good, the borders as well. The back has slight wear in one spot from scrapbook removal, it is otherwise clean. This does look to be a bit undergraded to our eyes. 10068 Honus Wagner PSA 4................... 1600 Vital card of Honus Wagner, one of his most popular and also perhaps his most attractive card. The offered card has vivid color and image quality, clean surfaces and no visible creases or wrinkles of any kind. The back is clean. Mild and consistent corner wear keeps this great card of Honus Wagner at a very, very pleasing 4. 10169 McGraw PSA 4..................... 180 Well centered and fairly clean, a hint of a back corner wrinkle and a spot by the lower right corner keep this at a 4. Nice card with good color and image quality. 10270 Clarke PSA 4.5.................. 180 A hair shy of Ex, PSA really split hairs here. Clean card has no creases or wrinkles, clean surfaces, a good image and clean borders. Centered to the upper right corner, the image looks great and the back is clean. 10373 Max Carey PSA 4..................... 120 An elusive HOFer, this is centered to the upper right corner with no creases or wrinkles. The image is nice, the back shows the slightest wear from erased pencil. 25 oct2016auction final.indd 25 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 1915 Cracker Jacks 10475 Huggins PSA 2..................... 105 Clean front with no creases or wrinkles, a spot of wear by the bottom border on the back led PSA to grade this a somewhat tough 2. 112 1932 U.S. Caramel 21 Klein SGC 5.5....... 175 Tougher card, this is one of the most elusive HOFer from this great set. Very well centered, this has a super clean front and a solid back. The corners come to points, but slight wear keeps this at a very, very high-end Ex Plus 5.5. Fine card will be an upgrade for most of you. 10577 Jennings PSA 2..................... 105 Centered to the upper left corner, this has no creases or wrinkles. Pencil was erased on the back, perhaps leading to the tougher 2 grade (this otherwise looks VG to VG-Ex). Affordable Cracker Jack HOFer. 10688 Christy Mathewson PSA 2..................... 700 Another iconic card, you have to love this beautiful image of Christy Mathewson. The front of the card is exceptionally well centered with no creases or wrinkles, clean borders and terrific eye appeal (there are just some stray black marks by the lower left quadrant of the card). The back is clean, but does some very subtle residue from one-time scrapbook removal (there is no paper loss). The corners are a solid VGEx to Ex. Extremely high quality card for the grade, an ideal card to grab onto in this market and put in a draw for a few years! 108161Rousch PSA 4.5.................. 180 Tougher high number HOFer, this is well centered with good color, clean surfaces and no creases or wrinkles. The back is clean. Ideal for the grade, mild corner keeps this a hair below Ex. Very nice card. 109 1916 D329 Weil Baking 38 Ty Cobb PSA 4......... 1500 Rare card, one has not traded publicly in in three years (an SGC 3 brought $3,911). Offered is a superior PSA 4, well centered with bright white borders, a classic image of Ty Cobb batting and very clean surfaces. The corners exhibit only mild and even wear, there is no visible creasing, even under magnification. The back is clean. Ideal card for the grade, this is the highest graded example to date we believe (highest graded, pop 1/1, with only two other graded examples). This is a great Ty Cobb card to add to your collection. 110 1929 Exhibit Durocher, Gehrig, Koenig, Ruth SGC 1.5....... 300 Interesting card, this has no creases or wrinkles and a clean back. Slight surface scuffing on the card, mainly on Ruth’s image, keep this at a technical 1.5. The card otherwise has bright color and a nice look. The back is clean. How neat is it to have a real card from the 1920s with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig together? These seem profoundly undervalued to us in today’s market. 111 1929 Leader Novelty Bottomley, Jim SGC 1.5....... 150 Very, very scarce card, these hardly ever come to market. Hand-cut as issued, this has some creasing, mainly visible on the back and some scraping on the back. Still not a bad card at all for the grade, the image is nice. 26 oct2016auction final.indd 26 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 113 1933 Goudey 144 Babe Ruth SGC 2.......... 800 Classic card of Babe Ruth, these have been so hot in recent years. Exceptionally well centered, which is very unusual, the card has a lovely multi-color image, clean surfaces and a very nice look. The back is clean. A very fine crease by the top border and a nick in the top border combine to keep this at a very, very pleasing 2. Perfect card for the grade, now is the time to fill in this key hole in your 1933 Goudey set or Babe Ruth card collection. 114 1939 Play Ball 41 Lon Warneke PSA 8............. 30 115 1941 Play Ball 14 Ted Williams PSA 5........... 285 A famous card, these seem so undervalued at current market levels. With gorgeous color and clean surfaces, centering to the right border is the only distraction here. The back is clean and the corners come to points. Putting this in a closet for a few years is probably a very shrewd move. 1951 Topps Blue Back 132 3 Ashburn PSA 8................ 100 Key card, these are not rare but still seem awfully cheap at current market levels in 8 holders. Well centered with good color, there is visible wear at the lower left corner. 133 6 Schoendienst PSA 8.................. 75 Well centered with sharp edges, bright white borders and strong color, this is a very nice looking card. Tougher card in this quality, this will be an upgrade for many of you. 116 1948 Leaf Premiums Gehrig Ex................ 300 Terrific larger image of Gehrig, these scarce cards seem very undervalued to us. Issued on fragile stock, this has card has very crisp edges and three sharp corners (there is slight wear at the lower left corner). With hardly any wrinkles or technical flaws, the front and back are awfully clean. Good piece for a high-end HOF type-card collection. 1949 Bowmans 119 23 Doerr PSA 8.................. 80 Extremely well centered with four sharp corners, a classic 8 from this condition sensitive issue. 117 21 Baumholtz PSA 8.................. 25 120 30 Seminick PSA 8.................. 25 121 32 Yost RC PSA 8.................. 25 122 48 PSA 8.................. 25 123 53 PSA 8.................. 25 124 73 B Cox RC PSA 7.5............... 35 125 109 PSA 8.................. 25 126 115 PSA 8.................. 25 127 184 PSA 7.5............... 25 130 228 PSA 7.5............... 25 128 203 McCosky PSA 8.................. 40 Well centered with four sharp corners, this has great color. 129 208 Trout PSA 8.................. 40 Well centered with four very sharp corners, this very colorful card looks great. 131 1951 Bowman 305 Willie Mays RC SGC 2.5......... 750 Another super-hot card, it is easy to see why. Offered is a perfect card for the grade, this has rich color, clean surfaces, even corner wear and no visible creases or wrinkles, even under magnification. Centering is heavy to the left border and there is a very subtle print line. Most 3s do not look this good, this is an awfully nice card for the grade. 27 oct2016auction final.indd 27 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Cards 1951 Topps Blue Back 134 12 Jethroe PSA 9.................. 33 Mint 9 card of this former Negro League player and Rookie of the year. The color and image are especially fine here, the edges are super sharp, the borders bright white. 135 15 Joost PSA 8.5............... 30 Very strong card, virtually Mint, we are not sure why this did not get a 9. 136 18 Garver PSA 8.................. 17 137 19 Masi PSA 8.................. 17 140 40 Wertz PSA 8.................. 17 141 44 Wyrostek PSA 8.................. 17 142 49 Sauer PSA 8.................. 17 138 33 Lenhardt PSA 9.................. 33 Very well centered, this has an immaculate front with perfect edges and borders. 139 38 Noren PSA 9.................. 53 Mint card has spotless original color, super white borders and that signature Mint feel. Very fine. 143 50 Mize PSA 8.................. 45 Sharp looking card has good color and bright white borders. The usual slight centering to the upper left corner kept this out of contention for a 9. 155 1952 Topps 27 Jethroe PSA 9 oc........ 40 Quality player, this card has brilliant color and four Mint corners. Very heavy centering led reasonably to the oc qualifier. 157 1954 Red Heart 16 Lemon SGC 8.......... 125 Razor sharp card has four perfect corners, superb color and a super fresh look. Centered about 60/40 to the upper left corner, very nice Red Heart HOFer. 158 1954 Red Heart32 Yost SGC 7.5......... 30 159 1954 Topps Scoops 41 Babe Ruth PSA 5........... 105 Fairly well centered with only mild corner wear, this is a very nice Ex 5 card. The borders are white, the color and image quality are terrific, the back is clean. The key card to this widely collected set, offered as a very solid PSA Ex 5. 160 1956 Kahns Frank Robinson RC (pop 1/4, highest graded!) PSA 5........... 300 Serious card, this is something that you hardly ever see, especially in this Rookie Card crazed market. A condition rarity, there is nothing higher than this in the PSA registry. A clean 5, this has only slight corner wear, top centering, a fine image and a clean blank back. This card hardly ever comes to market in this quality, a 5 has not traded publicly. This is an ideal card to add to a very high-end Rookie Card collection. Small in size but not stature, this 3/8 inch pin hardly ever comes to market. The FIRST BROOKLYN DODGER TEAM TO APPEAR IN THE WORLD SERIES, all they had to do was beat a Red Sox team with Babe Ruth! (they lost 4 games to 1). The offered pin is in outstanding Ex-Mt/NM condition, the lettering is clean and distinct, wear is as slight as possible given the age and item and this retains bright color and very clean surfaces. Dieges and Clust makers is engraved on the reverse screw mount. These have traded in recent years in the $4,000 - $5,000 range but without the remarkable provenance of the offered lot. As this came with such personal items from Christy Mathewson, we believe this belonged to Mathewson and was almost certainly worn by him at this World Series. Who wants to add a great pin in top condition to their collection? 188 1917 New York Giants World Series Press Pin (ex-Mathewson family)NM............ 1000 Unearthed in a recent discovery from a draw of vital Christy Mathewson personal items, including his World War One dog tags, offered is a rare and gorgeous 1917 New York Giants World Series press pin. Small in size but not stature, this 1/2 inch pin hardly ever comes to market. This is an extremely attractive baseball diamond design, with a white baseball in the center with blue enamel basepaths on all four sides. This is engraved WORLD SERIES 1917 GIANTS on the front and the screw post on the back is engraved Dieges and Clust Makers. Aside from its inherent rarity and beauty, 1917 was the first appearance for Shoeless Joe Jackson and his infamous Black Sox team in a World Series (they defeated the Giants four games to two); 1919 would of course be their second and final appearance in a World Series. Bright and fresh, the condition is a glorious Near Mint in our opinion and is likely one of the very finest condition examples in existence. An extremely similar example sold in 2015 for over $5,000 but without the remarkable provenance of the offered lot. As this came with such personal items from Christy Mathewson, we believe this belonged to Mathewson and was almost certainly worn by him at this World Series. Who wants to add a great, great pin in absolute top condition to their collection? 189 Christy Mathewson’s 1923 New York Giants Sterling Silver Pass! Ex.............. 1500 Unearthed in a recent discovery from a draw in which these treasures have been resting since at least the 1970s, we have several amazing lots from this titanic figure. Presented is something simply incredible, Christy Mathewson’s PERSONAL sterling silver pass to attend New York Giant games at the Polo Grounds in 1923 free of charge. Always popular among collectors, these charming passes were only produced by the Giants and as these were made for over a decade, advanced Giants collectors naturally have to have the whole run! Each year is completely different, the design for 1923 is a 1 3/8 charm. Engraved Giants WORLD’S CHAMPIONS 1921-1922 on the front, the back is truly special. It is engraved as follows: MR & MRS C. MATHEWSON 1923 370. This has typical wear from use and natural toning from age. 1923 was a historic season in baseball history as the Giants played the New York Yankees in the World Series for the third straight time; the Yankees finally won, and set off to change the course of baseball history. Matty was really the ultimate New York Giant, and to find anything personal from him is just unbelievably rare and exciting. This would be an extremely significant addition to ANY COLLECTION. 31 oct2016auction final.indd 31 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Memorabilia 190 Christy Mathewson’s 1925 Baseball Phillies Golden Jubilee Season Pass Ex-Mt........ 1000 Another incredible item that was unearthed in a recent discovery from a draw in which these treasures have been resting since at least the 1970s, this is simply awesome. Baseball, always mindful of promoting its history, made sure in 1925 to promote the 50th anniversary of the National League. Offered is a gorgeous 1 3/8 pendant; this has a wonderful visage of a Ben Franklin type patriotic figure about to pitch a baseball, surrounded by a beautifully detailed and ornate baseball diamond with nine players on the field. The vibrantly colored light blue enameled border is engraved PHILADELPHIA NATIONAL LEAGUE BASE BALL CLUB. As if that was not enough, it gets better! The back is engraved NATIONAL LEAGUE P.B.B. GOLDEN JUBILEE 1925 ADMIT CHRISTY MATHEWSON #45. The front is quite clean, the back exhibits general wear from handling/ use. Mathewson tragically died in October of 1925, making this even more special as this was from the last year of his life. We could only find one public sale of this rare pass (in markedly lesser condition), issued to a generic person, and it sold for $966; how much is Christy Mathewson’s worth? 191 Christy Mathewson’s 1925 Baseball Golden Jubilee Personal Pin/Case (2) Ex*............. 1000 Another great item that was unearthed in a recent discovery from a draw in which these treasures have been resting since at least the 1970s, this is simply terrific. Baseball, always mindful of promoting its history, made sure in 1925 to promote the 50th anniversary of the National League. Offered is a small custom wallet (3 x 5) this is embossed 209 MRS. CHRIST. MATHEWSON & PARTY. The space on the right side holds a 1 3/8 gold colored medallion (possibly real gold). The medallion reads NATIONAL LEAGUE GOLDEN JUBILEE 1876 1925 on the front and is engraved LAMBERT BROS MAKERS NEW YORK. The front is in a beautiful Ex-Mt/Near Mint grade, the back has been removed from the case at one time and shows wear as such. These have traded at public auction, the biggest name to hit the market being Fred Clarke, which sold for $1,160. The offered lot should be in a different order of magnitude of valuation given the player involved and also a second medallion also comes with the lot. How great is it to get a personal Christy Mathewson from 1925, a historic baseball season and the final year of his life? 208 1933New York Giants World Series Press Pin (ex-Mathewson family)Ex-Mt.......... 150 Unearthed in a recent discovery from a draw of vital Christy Mathewson personal items, including his World War One dog tags, offered is a clean Ex-Mt/NM 1933 New York Giants World Series press pin. The condition is solid, with only very mild wear and a nice look; Dieges and Clust is engraved on the reverse. This is not engraved to Mathewson, and Matty died in 1925, but we believe this belonged to his widow or family based on the collection in which it was discovered. 32 oct2016auction final.indd 32 9/2/16 1:17 PM October 5 Auction: Baseball Memorabilia Fine Baseball Rings 192 1948Cleveland Indians World Series Ring Ex-Mt*....... 3000 Historic ring, this is from the last Cleveland Indians World Series team, among the longest droughts in professional sports.
