Fondo de Cultura Económica is the most important publishing house in Mexico
and one of the most important ones in Latin America. It was originally established
in 1934 as a way to provide students of Economics with books in Spanish on the
subject. Little by little fce expanded its publishing areas to other subjects that today
encompass almost everything, from children’s literature to scientific texts. Fondo de
Cultura Económica is a decentralized publishing institution funded by the Mexican
government.
fce’s backlist encompasses more than 8 000 volumes, from which 4 000 (aprox.) are
still being published or reprinted, with more than 250 new titles being added each year.
This great cultural wealth is grouped in many subjects, such as Literature, Philosophy,
Social Sciences, History, Children’s Books, Art, Economics, etc.
In addition to its central office in Mexico, fce has foreign branches in Argentina,
Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, Spain, usa and Venezuela.

his book is not only a dream catcher, but a guide to possible dreams, to the visions that
stay with us as we visit the nocturnal realm. It is charged with artificial light in order to
display different and surprising images in the dark. A contrast between what we see and what
awakens in our dreams when our eyes are shut.
Isol (b. Buenos Aires, 1972) studied Fine Arts and Mixed
Arts. She has worked in the fields of comic, poetry and
visual arts. At this moment, she is entirely devoted to media
and book illustration (covering from publishing firms, to
magazines and newspapers). She has published her work as
author and illustrator in Spain, Mexico, France and Argentina
with great success. She was honored with a Golden Apple at
the BIB, and her books are in the White Ravens List with a
Special Mention (2002, 2003, and 2004).

picture book in which fantasy cloaks nostalgia in order
to address—with humor, imagination, and tenderness—
a difficult subject: absence. At first glance, this is a book in
which a little girl approaches an imaginary friend so that he’ll
accompany her walking home from school each day. However, a
more careful reading shows what this girl must face every day:
poverty, taking care of her little brother, household chores, and
absence —her imaginary lion, a symbol of strength and protection, helps her deal with this. The surprise ending gives the
story a plot twist, making it richer, and more emotional. The
wealth of interwoven images displays the Colombian social environment the girl has to cope with while the text, simple and
tender, reveals the protagonist’s inner world.
Jairo Buitrago has worked as a writer, researcher, and
editorial assistant. He has published two books for children
and many more about cinema, his area of specialization.
Rafael Yockteng won the ibby Utopia Award, geared
towards Latin American illustrators of children’s books, in

in Colombia and abroad.

milia, a girl with hearing problems, discovers that she can
lip-read thanks to her new eyeglasses. What first seems a
revelation will soon be the cause of a mess that will also affect Andrea. Through a butterfly effect, Andrea will search in
her past to figure out why the relationship with her family has
become so unbearable. Meanwhile, Diego will secretly follow

os espejos de Anaclara reflects, from the point of view of
childhood, the fantasy of a girl who watches the mirror and
imagines that her eyes are two doors through which she can
enter to discover what is locked up in this interior: dreams, fear,
pain, joy and longing. A book developed along the boundaries
between reality and fantasy and along the conduits by which
these two communicate.
Mercedes Calvo was born in Uruguay in 1949. She has
taught since 1971 and as a teacher she always had a special
love for poetic language, which led her to direct several
projects and publications on poetry for children. She wrote
many texts on the subject in specialized magazines for
teachers and in 1997 she started working in adult education.
Starting from 1999 she worked as proof-reader at the
Department of Publishing and Printing of the Council of
Elementary Education of Uruguay. Retired since 2006, she
now devotes her time to writing poetry for children.

fter Max loses his right eye by accident, he finds out that
he can see things from two different points of view at the
same time. With his wandering eye, Max sees his school, night,
and his family in a new way. When his eye turns into a mutant
pearl and describes what it sees from the ocean bed, we see the
underwater world from a dazzling new perspective. These ingenious narrative poems express an instinctive sense of the fabulous and extraordinary humor as it demythologizes childhood.
Luigi Amara was born in Mexico City in 1971. He is a poet
and essayist, and has published several books of poems: El
decir de la mancha, El cazador de grietas, Pasmo and Envés. He
has also written a book of essays El peatón inmóvil. He was

children’s imagery: games, dreams of the sea, the animals

classic story from Mexican oral tradition that tells why the

a Catrina is a train ride into the world of José Guadalupe
Posada, engraver and commentator on Mexican society in

tale that introduces young readers to the imagination, the wit
and the engaging pictures by one of the greatest Mexican artists,
whose portrayal of the spirit of Mexico transcended the country’s borders. The book includes information about the history

coyote, the charro smugglers.
