Our
History.
GR E Y I NVE ST ME NT G RO UP
When travellers talk of their adventures
and experiences in the South Seas, the
name ‘Aggie Grey’s’ is bound to come up.
Some of this legendary status is due
to James Michener’s “Tales of the South
Pacific”, but most can be attributed to its
popularity with travellers who found it a
South Pacific haven.
The original Hotel was founded by
Aggie Grey – the daughter of William
Swann and his beautiful Samoan Bride
Pele – in 1933, as the British Club. Then
during WWII, it became renowned among
American servicemen stationed in Samoa
seeking respite from their duties. Aggie’s
charm, charisma and unfailing hospitality
drew many guests, plenty of whom
left as friends.
In the fifties these guests included actor
Gary Cooper, and the cast and crew of
“Tales of the South Pacific”, as well as a
whole constellation of Hollywood stars;
Marlon Brando, Raymond Burr, William
Holden, Tia Carera, Cheryll Ladd, Royalty
and Presidents.
Built as the International Hotel, the
original wooden building was removed
from its first site around 1900 and
reb uilt where Sheraton Samoa Aggie
Grey’s Hotel and Bungalow now
stands in Apia, on the harbour’s edge.
It was once again dism antled in 1987
to make way for newer accommodation facilities, which guests enjoyed
until recently, before the hotel sadly
suffered structural impairment in the
cyclone of December 2012.
Over the years, the Hotel has been
developed, expanded and modernised,
and is now undergoing a $25m USD
complete make-over after damage su
stained from Cyclone Evan. The Hotel
will be rebuilt under comprehensive
planning, nearly doubling its rooms and
improving its facilities when it reopens
early 2016.

Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel & Bungalows
While the Aggie Grey’s Hotel was
making its iconic name known in the
Pacific, during the 70’s and 80’s Alan
Grey, the son of Aggie Grey, started
working in the family business and
saw new opportunities.
These included starting Samoa Scenic
Tours, a service set up for tours and hotel
transfers on the mainland – and Apia
Bottling, which has become the largest
drinks and ice-cream manufacturer in
Samoa. Serving the Hotel’s needs and
sourcing goods from abroad, Apia
Bottling also started importing foreign
food, beverages and healthcare products.
It has now grown into the largest im
porter of foreign beers into Samoa.
After recognising opportunities to
diversify the family business, in the early
1990’s Alan Grey founded Grey Invest
ment Group. The group has since sort
to extend its ventures beyond its
successful business history of its legen
dary Hotels and Resorts, and have
4

grown an expansive and varied portfolio,
all of which has proven to be very profitable. During this period, the group has
become Samoa’s largest employer outside of government, providing valuable
jobs and opportunities to our community.
Developed as a sister piece to
Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel and
Bungalow in Apia in collaboration with
the Samoan governm ent, in 2005 the
Grey Investm ent Group opened the
doors of the $25m USD Aggie Grey’s
Lagoon, Beach Resort & Spa. The Resort
offers a whole new family holiday
experience in paradise and is situated
only five minutes commute from
Samoa’s main airport, Faleolo Inter
national. With its superb location, the
Resort allows travellers a quick and
effortless gateway to the start of their
Samoan holiday, a facility that had
been previously missing.
More recent investments include the
acquisition of Le Meridian Hotel in
Tahiti for $15m USD in 2012; the redevelopment of Le Penina Country Club,
Golf Course & Entertainment Functions
Centre; and Samoa’s first Condominium
& Time Share Village development, due
to be developed in 2016.
The Grey Investment Group continues
to progress their portfolio in the Pacific
region; constantly on the lookout for
new opportunities, it looks to diversify
and grow in emerging markets and
for developments to add its rapidly
expanding asset base.
We’re one of the
Largest Private
Employers in
Samoa.
We love working with people and helping
the wider community - the group employs
close to 1,000 people in Samoa, and nearly
500 in Tahiti, French Polynesia. This makes
us the largest employer in Samoa outside of
the government, ensuring on-going positive
contribution to the Samoan economy.

this innovative beachside resort will
provide a haven of tranquillity as well

David van Ryswyk, a world renowned

a fresh, innovative contemporary design
while still focusing on key elements to
integrate the property into the delightful

element in the design concept, and the
property will house a hotel featuring 38
Standard rooms all with full bathroom

Deluxe rooms with a single bedroom, full
bathroom, lounge and private balcony.
There will also be seven exclusive Ocean

and private over-water deck. Each hotel
room and villa will come complete with
designer fittings and fixtures. The new
developments will be unique and be similar in quality to a Mini ‘Denarau’ in Fiji or
a ‘Mini Viaduct Harbour’ in New Zealand.
“A haven of tranquillity as

All the rooms and ocean villas will be
sold under Unit Title which allows each
purchaser to take ownership of their
room complete with balcony and use of
all common areas. The body corporate
will operate on behalf of the purchasers
and the Grey Investment Group will
manage and run the condominiums.
The most unique aspect about this development is as a non Samoan resident it
is virtually impossible to purchase land in
Samoa. Development of these unique
condominiums will help provide opportunities for non residents to enjoy a slice
of paradise all year round. A sound
investment with strong growth opportunity for increasing value in the future.

GREY INVESTMENT GROUP _ CHARITY AND COMMUNITY
Giving
Back To
The People.
We believe in people and as part of what we do we give back
generously to the local and wider community. Some of the
projects and charities that we have been involved in are:
HEALTH
The Grey Investment Group and family
have always been at the forefront of
offering their help to those that volunteer
their services to aid Samoans and their
health. Help is given by assisting plastic
surgeons, doctors and aid groups with
free accommodation and meals at our
hotels and resorts for those that volunteer to come to Samoa to help the needy.
LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of Roman Catholic
women, founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne

Backing the
Boys & Manu
Samoa Rugby.
We ‘ve been proud supporters of Samoan Rugby since the early
1970’s and continue to be now.
Instrumental in being a driving force
behind Samoan Rugby and what it is
today, the Grey Investment Group lead
by Alan Grey pioneered Samoan Rugby
from the early 1970’s. Even the Samoan
Prime Minister can be quoted saying
“The truth about Alan Grey...Rugby
wouldn’t exist in Samoa today without
him... Alan Grey has spent millions of
his own money to fund Manu Samoa
in the past.”
Behind the scenes the group collectively
helped finance Samoan Rugby until it
became professional with the formation
of Manu Samoa Rugby Limited. This was
helped by the Fay Richwhite Merchant
Bank, Grey Investment Group, others
on the board and the Samoan Rugby
Football Union.
The Group has spent millions sponsoring
Samoa Rugby over the years and are
proud of where it is at today.
Alan Grey was installed as the Samoan
National coach in the 1970’s and helped
the Samoan Rugby Team to some
great successes.
