Our history is one of dedication to the community. On 10 December 1906, The Municipal Cemetery, Fawkner (as we were then known) opened to meet the needs of the city’s flourishing North West. Noted surveyor and architect Charles R. Heath designed our spider web layout of magnificent tree-lined avenues. In 1907 our young cemetery became The New Melbourne General Cemetery. Located on the outward-bound train line, funerals accessed our grounds by one of six specially designed mortuary trains that operated from 1906 to 1936. When our original crematorium opened in 1926, it was the first modern complex in Victoria to include a chapel for services as well as cremation facilities in the same venue. It operated until the late 70s, when replaced by our current nondenominational chapels and crematorium complex. Our original crematorium and chapel, 1926 In 1971, by an Act of Parliament, we became Fawkner Crematorium & Memorial Park. Originally established under the trusteeship of local mayors and councillors, we passed into the management of an independent Trust the same year. Australia’s first public Mausoleum opened here in 1994, our Holy Family Mausoleum. Today we provide thousands of spaces for above ground entombment. Our Holy Angels Mausoleum – containing well over 6100 crypt spaces – is one of the largest in Australia. Our Trust manages Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery, Fawkner Memorial Park, Northern Memorial Park and our yet to be established Plenty Valley Memorial Park. Together, by land size, we are the largest cemetery in Australia. On an average weekday, more than 20 funeral services are conducted here. Annually, this equates to well over 5,000 services. Every year more than two million visitors pass through our gates Our first burial, 10 December 1906 2 The first Mortuary Train service arrives at Fawkner Memorial Park, 1906 3 Rose Memorials For many, the beauty of roses has special significance. You can choose this special flower to commemorate a loved one in a number of ways. Set in formal garden beds with a personalised plaque, our Border Rose Memorials are a beautiful and practical choice for an individual or shared memorial. Rose Memorials are available throughout the Park and it is often possible to choose a particular type or colour of rose from the many species we have available. Providing for two interments, a Companion Rose Memorial dedicates a selected rose bush in memory to loved ones. The beauty of roses has special significance Companion Rose Memorial OPTIONS Companion Rose Memorial, Border Rose Memorial or Family Rose Memorial SIZE Single, companion or family (up to four placements) PLAQUE Family Rose Memorial With room for up to four placements, a Family Rose Memorial is a popular choice for those wishing to create a family memorial. Size: 7" x 7" (175mm x 175mm) or 4" x 6.5" (100mm x 165mm) Material: Glass, granite or bronze Centre: Border Rose Memorial 4 5 Tree Memorials Representing the seasons of life, a Tree Memorial is an everlasting, always changing remembrance. Individual dedications and family groupings of up to four can be made around a special tree. Laid out in formal avenues, grouped in forest groves or placed in lawn settings, a Tree Memorial is a fitting statement of a cherished life. OPTIONS Tree Memorial SIZE Family (up to four placements) PLAQUE Size: 7" x 7" (175mm x 175mm) or 9" x 9" (230mm x 230mm) Material: Glass, granite or bronze 7 Boulder Memorials Symbolic of endurance and an everlasting spiritual life, Boulder Memorials are available in companion or family settings. Positioned individually or in garden beds, this style of memorial is an excellent choice for those wanting to create an enduring commemoration. Unlike living memorials that represent the changes of time and season, a Boulder Memorial is symbolic of fortitude and eternal life. OPTIONS Boulder Memorial SIZE Single, companion or family (up to four placements) PLAQUE Size: 7" x 7" (175mm x 175mm) Material: Glass, granite or bronze 8 Wall Niches Perhaps the most traditional and popular of all cremation memorials, the clean lines and construction of our Wall Niches combines style and security – providing full peace of mind. A stunning visual feature of our landscape, our Wall Niches are arranged as symmetrical features throughout the park. Available in either single or companion positions - each Wall Niche is fronted by a plaque - safely securing the cremated remains housed within. OPTIONS Wall Niche or Granite Wall Niche SIZE Single or companion PLAQUE Size: 7" x 7" (175mm x 175mm) Material: Glass or bronze 11 Garden Niches Garden Niches are a contemporary alternative to the more traditional wall niche. Combining the symbolic meaning of a living memorial with the peace of mind of interment, our Garden Niches allow cremated remains to be placed in a garden bed behind the memorial plaque. The result is a living and lasting commemoration to your loved one. Garden Niches are available as individual or companion placements – and are located throughout the grounds as borders to gardens or water features. OPTIONS Border Garden Niche or Water Feature Garden Niche SIZE Single or companion PLAQUE Size: 9" x 9" (230mm x 230mm) Material: Glass, granite or bronze 12 Garden of Eternal Memories Our stunning Garden of Eternal Memories combines contemporary design with natural earthy elements to create a new era in cremation memorials and graves. The garden’s layout is based around the four nodes of the compass: with North representing the four seasons, West the four stages of human life, South the four corners of earth, and finally East representing the four elements of life. An ornamental pool, spanning the width of the garden, creates a grand entrance to this beautiful setting. Our Garden of Eternal Memories has various memorialisation options available. Special areas have also been set aside for burials. The garden's Family Alcoves are available for those wishing to create a private and grand burial tribute to their family. Truly, a lasting family legacy. Select from our stunning Garden Niches, placed around the garden's many flower beds, all personalised with your choice of glass or bronze plaque. Finally, the garden's many trees can be used to create a family Tree Memorial. Select from a wide variety of developing trees located throughout the magnificent garden. We also have Water Feature Niches, positioned round the perimeter of the garden's magnificent central pond, where many varieties of flora and fauna thrive. Our Headstone Memorials, pictured here, offer you an alternative to the traditional memorial options - providing you with a significant granite headstone to commemorate a loved one's life. A new era in cremation memorials and burials 14 OPTIONS Garden Niche, Water Feature Niche, Family Alcove, Headstone Memorial or Tree Memorial SIZE Single, companion or family PLAQUE Size: 7" x 7" (175mm x 175mm) or 9" x 9" (230mm x 230mm) Material: Glass, granite or bronze 15 Columbarium Urn Styles Choosing cremation also has its place within our grand Mausolea. Inside the Mausoleum’s hushed confines, urns are placed securely on display in our state-ofthe-art Columbarium. Finished in the finest materials, our opulent Columbarium is a fitting resting place. At Fawkner Memorial Park, we have a wide variety of urns on display for you to select from. Our urn selection can be viewed any time our office is open. Choose from beautifully decorated ceramic urns, to highly polished wood caskets or urns created from everlasting bronze. We can even place the cremated remains into the urn you select from our range. If we do not have the colour, style or size urn you require, we will endeavour to order it for you. Whatever your choice, our quality urns will stand the test of time. Urns holding the cremated remains of loved ones are encased behind the Columbarium’s toughened glass wall - in either single or companion positions. You can select from a variety of urns to house the cremated remains – from beautifully decorated ceramics, to highly polished woods or even everlasting bronze. By choosing a position in our Columbarium, you are taking advantage of roundthe-clock security and the absolute serenity that our Mausoleum provides. SIZE Single or companion 16 Choose from beautifully decorated ceramic urns, to highly polished wood caskets or urns created from everlasting bronze 17 Scattering Cremated Remains Plaques Every decision for cremation leads to another - whether to scatter or inter cremated remains. This very personal choice can only be reached with a thorough understanding of the process of interment and memorialisation. We believe memories are precious and should be shared with future generations. A plaque is an item of beauty and great dignity which provides a focus for grieving and a point of reference to a person’s entire existence. Even when cremated remains are scattered, a memorial can be created within our park to record the life of your loved one – a place for family, relatives and friends to visit. All of our cremation memorials are marked with a specially designed plaque, personalised with the inscription of your choice. You can choose from a traditional bronze plaque, knowing you are carrying on a rich and proud history. Bronze is an ageless and elegant metal that has been used for thousands of years to commemorate and memorialise people, places and events. Alternatively, our glass plaques provide you with a modern option to commemorating your loved one. The beauty of glass is that it allows you to reflect a cherished life in full colour – with limitless design alternatives. Plaques memorialising loved lives are spread throughout our grounds, regardless of the location of the cremated remains. Alternatively, placing a record in our Book of Remembrance is an everlasting marker to a loved life. The choice to inter cremated remains also provides a wide selection of memorial options. A wall or garden niche offers both security and practicality - by combining the secure storage of cremated remains with memorialisation. Those requiring the highest security and peace of mind may prefer placing ashes in a stunning urn – housed within our opulent glass walled Columbarium. Whatever your choice, all of our cremation memorials have renewable tenure of 25 years or they can be purchased in perpetuity (forever) to enable a permanent record of a loved life. 18 A plaque is an extremely valuable and essential link between the past and the future 19 Book Of Remembrance Chapels The Book of Remembrance is an eloquent way to commemorate a loved life. Housed in the Chapel of the Archangel Raphael, the Book of Remembrance is the perfect complement to a plaque or niche memorial. Alternatively, the Book can be a standalone record when a loved one is interred elsewhere. It can also record the memory of a loved one who may be buried at Fawkner Memorial park or another cemetery. When our original Crematorium was built in 1926, it was the first modern complex in Victoria to combine cremation facilities with a chapel for services. This crematorium and chapel was replaced in 1980, when a new modern facility was built. Today, this complex consists of three state-of-the-art chapels and computerised cremators, all of which employ leading edge technology. Inside its handmade leather covers, richly tooled in pure gold, the gilt-edged pages contain entries which have been individualised with words and images to create a unique record. Family and friends can access the Book, by appointment, anytime our office is open. Entries of five lines or more may be embellished with a gold initial letter, family crest, or a delicate watercolour painting of any flower or other symbol which may be of special significance. Regimental badges may also be added to memorials of ex-service personnel. Our stunning chapels are world-class. At the forefront of technology, services in our chapels can be personalised to reflect your loved one's life. They feature the latest plasma screens to play videos, DVDs and PowerPoint presentations during a service. Located at either end of each chapel are pan-n-scan cameras – which can zoom in to highlight important aspects of the service. These new AV facilities also record each service onto DVD. We also have an extensive music library available – that can be played during the service. Our three chapels are non denominational. We welcome people of all religions and cultures to use these tranquil spaces to mark the passing of a loved life among family and friends. The chapels are available for burials, cremations and other memorial services. Following the service, families can stay within our grounds to receive guests with a function in our Tearooms. An eloquent way to commemorate a loved life 20 21 Tearooms Our Mission Our historic Tearooms have been painstakingly restored to their former glory - with new flooring, ceiling and plasterwork throughout. Our Tearooms offer a pleasant dining and function experience for you with a full caterer’s kitchen, beautiful furnishings and decor. Our mission statement summarises our core business and organisational purpose. It states clearly what we do. The Tearooms are available to hire for functions after a funeral service has taken place at Fawkner. We have two function spaces: our Back Room to cater for larger functions, and the Front Room for smaller, more intimate gatherings. Within the Tearooms' solid brick walls, visitors to Fawkner Memorial Park can take time out for refreshments. Tea, coffee and delicious lunches are served daily – as well as a wide variety of take-away items. You can also purchase fresh flowers here – to place on a loved one’s memorial. Contact them on [03] 9355 3118 to enquire or make a function booking. 22 Fawkner Memorial Park provides cremation, burial and memorialisation services of the highest quality, delivered in a way that shows care for people and sensitivity to their values and beliefs 23 ST HILTON MORELL EVELL P WILLS ON M WI T CHELL 536 FLINDERS Flinders Lane MI MITCHELL HE NT Y CIR HUME C ST ST Lake VI CT OR IA MAP REF AREA COMP’T MAP REF COMP’T AREA E8 Mausoleum - Holy Family F12 Alder Court H8 Mausolea - Private A E11 Baptist H8 Mausolea - Private B F5 Baptist F7 Merlynston Lawn C G8 Baptist G6 Methodist H9 A Belarusian H9 Methodist H8 B B.H.
