Monday 20 June – Sunday 3 July Lalor Library National Simultaneous Storytime (16th Year) To celebrate World Environment Day, City of Whittlesea is launching the Merri Creek ‘From Wasteland to Parkland’ Exhibition which will then be touring all of our City of Whittlesea branches. The tour is starting at Thomastown and Lalor Libraries and will then be travelling to Mill Park and Whittlesea branches throughout July. Wednesday 25 May 11.00am Join thousands of children across Australia to listen to the same book at the same time. Special guests will read the book I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate Temple, Illustrated by Jon Foye at all branches. See page 2 for more information. Public library service to the Cities of Banyule and Whittlesea, and the Shire of Nillumbik Wednesday 25 May 11.00am–12.00noon National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign to encourage the enjoyment of reading and promote the value of literacy within Library and Information week. It is in its 16th year. Every year a picture book that is written and illustrated by Australians is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centre, family homes and bookshops around the country. So come along and join in at your local branch to listen to I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate Temple. Read by special guests. Come and learn how to trade your skills and goods online. Join our small group and catch the train from Rosanna Station for a guided tour of some of the CBD’s beautiful libraries and bookshops. Zumba Gold Chair is an exercise program suitable for people with limited mobility as routines are performed while sitting in chairs. Come and enjoy some gentle exercise before the library opens. GEEK THE LIBRARY Let’s Try Programming Just4Kids Draw with Adam Wallace Programming is not hard – it is just telling the computer what you want it to do. Come along and Samuel will demonstrate just how easy it can be and even show you how to make your programs interact with the real world. She will explore the birds you can expect to see in and around the Watsonia area, unusual and noteworthy species and how you can report these. As well as threats to birds in urban environments and what you can do in your own backyard to make it as bird-friendly as possible. Kerryn will also speak briefly about BirdLife Australia – Australia’s longest continually running conservation organisation and how you can become involved. MAKERSPACE: Characters Are People Too Thursday 9 June 6.00pm–8.00pm Write about your characters in a way that makes readers feel as though they know them. Tess Evans, author of The Book of Lost Threads, The Memory Tree and Mercy Street will conduct a workshop for writers who want to develop their skills in character development.
