LUCKY Program No. PAG E 3 2016 / 2017 OFFICIAL PROGRAM WWW.NEWMARKETHURRICANES.COM /Newmarket-Hurricanes canesojhl @NmktHurricanes 1 WELCOME MESSAGE As many of you may know, we took over the team in late November 2013 with over half the season completed. Our primary decision to purchase the team was based on the tremendous history and success the Hurricane’s have had on and off the ice over the years. As a community we can all be proud of the 120 players that have gone on to US or Canadian Universities, the 26 players that have turned pro and the 10 players that went on to the NHL. These facts, combined with the $125K the Hurricanes have raised for the Southlake Cancer Centre, have positioned the team as one of the premier franchises in the OJHL. Much of our time since has been spent getting to know the many amazing volunteers, meeting with town officials and learning the general status of operations. More importantly however, we have been planning the re-birth of the Newmarket Hurricanes Hockey Team for the coming 2016/2017 and beyond. Our main objective is to continue to offer an outstanding hockey program to players where development, character building and opportunity are at the forefront. We believe if we provide an amazing hockey environment for our players we will see great results on the ice in the coming season. Another of our goals for the 2016/2017 season and beyond is to make our players and management staff more visible in the community by participating in a number of charity and social events and we will continue our work in supporting the Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Cancer Care unit. We want everyone to know that we will do our very best to not only provide a winning hockey program but to ensure we weave our brand back into the community that has so strongly supported our team in the past. 2 2017 C-Class Coupe. Formed as a community organization, player education has been emphasized since the inception. Many former players have gone on to play in Canadian universities or colleges while many more have been awarded scholarships from American universities. During the first six seasons, the team played in the Central Ontario Jr. B. Hockey League with modest success. In 1993-94, the team moved into the newly formed Ontario Provincial Jr. A Hockey League (OPJHL) and since then have experienced tremendous success. In 1994-95, the team moved to the 3,700-seat Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, having outgrown the confines of the historic downtown Newmarket Community Centre. In the first game at the RTC, 3,700 fans watched the 87’s defeat a touring Russian team. In the 1995 playoffs, over 21,000 fans attended a seven-game playoff series between the 87’s and Barrie Colts. Over 4,000 fans crammed into the RTC for Game 7, with approximately 2,000 fans being turned away at the gate. 1995-96 saw the 87’s win the OJHL Championship and the Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian title. This put them in the prestigious Royal Bank Cup National Tier 2 Jr. A Championship, where they list in the semi finals to the eventual winners. It was prior to the 1997-98 season that the club changed its name to the Newmarket Hurricanes. Following the 2003-04 season, the last two of the original five owners decided that their time had come to step away from the hockey club. In 2007-08, the club hosted the Dudley Hewitt Cup at the Ray Twinney Complex and was an automatic errant as the host. They reached the Championship Game, only to fall one win short of advancing to their second Royal Bank Cup. In 2009-10, as part of the new Central Canadian Hockey League, the Hurricanes won the club’s second league championship. In the OHA Championship Series, they went down to defeat in the tough six-game series against Oakville, the same club which beat them in the 07-08 Dudley Hewitt Cup. In 2010-2011 the Hurricanes won the regular season championship and eventually were defeated in the third round of playoffs. Over its history, the club has recorded: • 8 Regular Season Championships • 2 OJHL Eastern Conference Championships • 1 OJHL Northeast Conference Championship • 1 Ontario Junior Hockey League Championship • 1 Central Canadian Hockey League Championship • 1 Ontario Hockey Federation Championship • 1 Newmarket Showcase Tournament Championship • 1 Royal Bank Cup National Championship Appearance (Semi-Finalist) • 8 Consecutive 30-Win Seasons (1998-2006) For 2016-2017, the Hurricanes will be celebrating its 29th year of operation. The Hurricanes are regularly near or at the top in OJHL attendance. Many fans follow the club to road games as well. With the continued outstanding support from its sponsors, volunteers and fans, the Newmarket Hurricanes hope to carry on providing local hockey players with somewhere to hone their talents and provide quality entertainment for the people of Newmarket. 6 BOARD & BANNER ADVERTISERS Please support these major advertisers as they are vital to our success!
