Let’s work together to make this the best NDRA Tournament yet!! :) Cheers, Amy Garrett The Niagara Falls tournament has been a staple in the Open B team’s schedule for many years. This weekend away is a great time to relax, bond and share some quality girl time. The tournament had never been about winning or losing for this team, but that all changed last year. With a total of 45 points, 21 goals and 24 assists, the Open B team took gold. For many onlookers their fate looked sealed after their first game, a loss of 8-3 against Caledonia. With no real expectations for gold, the Open B ladies dismissed their poor performance and looked forward to their next shot on the ice. With an early morning start and a shot of coffee under their belts, the team went face to face with a very familiar team, the Oshawa Storm. Hoping to gain ground after their last attempt on the ice, the ladies blared their favorite tunes in the change room, visualized their strategies and got pumped for a win. With an 8-1 score, Newmarket had a new hop in their step and were still in the running for a possible semi-final finish. Going into their final game the team knew this was their chance to turn a girl’s fun get away weekend into a gold medal finish. With determination, the Newmarket Open B dominated their final game with a score of 5-2 against the home team, Niagara Falls. The Open B team was given a shot at redemption. A chance to prove they deserved gold. The following morning you could feel the tension in the change room. Energy buzzed in the air and it was evident adrenaline was at a high. With a motivating talk from their head coach they were ready to play their hearts out. The spectators could not have asked for a better final game to watch! By the end of the first, Newmarket was up a score of 2 -1 but they were feeling the toll of all the other games played and they knew Caledonia was not far behind. With 3 minutes left in the second period Caledonia tied the game pushing them into sudden death overtime. The Open B ladies knew they had it in them to pull out this win. With their infamous cheer they started out strong in this 5 minute overtime period, but their efforts would not be enough. With still a scoreless overtime the Open B ladies had to endure another overtime period. In partnership with their hard work, accurate passes, smart moves and team work, Captain of the Open B team, Kelly K., put it away with 2:03 seconds left in the period. In disbelief and with a thunderous roar of cheers, the ladies celebrated their gold medal win with a center ice pile on! So what’s next? This tournament holds new meaning for the ladies of Open B. The 1 st weekend of March 2014 will be time set aside to defend their gold. If I had to place a bet, I would put it on Newmarket to take the gold for a second time. It is hard to believe that the season is already at the half way point. I have had the pleasure of watching almost every team play a game or two, and I must say we are looking good. I would to thank all the coaches and bench staff for being great role models for the girls, without you, the teams would not be where they are today. I would also like to say a big thank you to ALL the board members. YOUR NDRA board members have worked hard all year to ensure the season is a success. The board members have had many discussions on what can be done to assist with further development and success for all players, not just for this year but also for the years to come. We have some very exciting plans in the pipeline so please stay tuned for more information. Our Newmarket IGNITE the ICE tournament is fast approaching; please help out where ever and when ever you can. Our volunteers are what makes our tournament such a success. I strongly encourage everyone to take a look at the schedule and see when some of the Provincial "A" and "AA" teams are playing. We are hosting a wide rage of elite ringette teams and players and this is a perfect opportunity to watch and learn from these fantastic athletes. Speaking of watching elite ringette. I had the pleasure of traveling to North Bay a few weeks ago to watch the World Championships of Ringette (the home of where Ringette was invented) and it was a great experience to see the best players in the world perform. I highly recommended the trip if the Worlds should ever come back to Ontario. I look forward to seeing everyone at the tournament in a few weeks, and remember, if you have any questions and you see me or any other board members around the arena come and introduce yourself and ask away. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have. And remember......................IF YOU LIKE IT.....................PUT A RING ON IT!
