Interview with Industrial Trainee
Preface: I would like
to extend my gratitude
to the editor of The
Islander for granting me
the opportunity to share
my experiences with
the wider community of
Bapco.
Give
us
a
brief
introduction of yourself.
My name is Ghassan
Ghannam. I joined Bapco
in December, 2014 as an industrial trainee to fulfill the last
requirement of university which is to do an internship for a
minimum of 12 weeks and submit a practicum report to be
eligible to graduate as a postgraduate engineer.
What is the nature of your educational programme, and
where are you pursuing your education?
In February, 2011, I joined Edith Cowan University (ECU)
in Perth, Western Australia to do a postgraduate course
in Master of Engineering in Mechatronics. Prior to that, I
had completed a Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics
Engineering at AMA International University, Bahrain.
Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field of engineering; it is a
synergistic combination of mechanics, electrical engineering,
electronics, and computer science for the study of control
systems and automation in product design, manufacturing,
and process control. Throughout my university education
and work placement in Bapco, I found it fascinating to learn
about how electro-mechanical systems can be integrated
with computing systems to achieve automation.
Which division/department are you training in at Bapco?
I have been training for about three-and-a-half months in
Ghassan Ghannam, Plant Engineering Department
the Systems Support section at Bapco’s Plant Engineering
Department (PED-SS), formerly known as PC&I (Process
Control and Instrumentation). I also spent two weeks in the
Instrumentation section of the PED.
Who are you training under?
In the first month I was put in a familiarisation programme
for two weeks in the PED-SS and for one week in the PEDInstrumentation. In the meantime and afterwards I was
assigned to accompany engineers from the department and
EPCs (Engineering Procurement Contractors) to perform
tasks that relate to supporting systems and the commissioning
of new systems and/or the modifying of existing systems,
along with several field visits inside and outside the Refinery.
My practicum supervisor is Mr. Ahmed Abdulrahman, the
superintendent of the PED-SS. I was able to get the most out
of my training due to his support and encouragement, and the
support of the other engineers in the PED. The scrupulous
professionalism and positive attitude which permeate the
department are exemplary indeed; I strongly recommend this
training programme to all engineering students contemplating
the idea.
Describe your typical day as a trainee here. What tasks
are you entrusted with?
My position as an industrial trainee has involved a variety
of tasks related to the main responsibilities of the section
which are to provide continuous support services to control
and automation systems that reside in Bapco’s operational
areas including the Refinery, the Gas Distribution Network
(GDN), the Marketing Terminal, and the Wharf (Harbour).
The project in which I had the most involvement is the
cyber security system, which is a big project expected to be
completed in a few months.
What skills do you aim to develop during your training
period here?
My work placement at the PED-SS in Bapco was extremely
rewarding and an excellent opportunity to gain some
hands-on experience in the engineering field. It gave
me an opportunity to work as an engineer and not just
as a student. I acquired many new skills and developed
many already existing skills including thinking as
programmer and software developer, creativity in
design, working in a team-based environment, dealing
with management and EPCs (Engineering Procurement
Contractors), and sharpening my communication and
interpersonal skills. I have also found that my ability to
learn and absorb new information has greatly improved,
as well as my time management ability. My experience
at Bapco has been invaluable and I learned a great deal
about the various aspects of the oil and gas industry. During training I learn a great deal about computer
science and electronics. From the computer science
side, I learned about networking schemes; IP addressing
and setting up default gateways; performing backups
of machines using different backup agents; accessing
computers remotely and performing tasks on them;
understanding the topology and architecture of the
process network and the corporate network, and how
they are connected; and the management of databases.
From the control engineering side, I learned about the
DCS, PLC, SCADA, and other systems.
Have you previously done any training programmes
during your course of study?
I did four weeks of industrial training in BALEXCO
(The Bahrain Aluminium Extrusion Company) in March,
2010 as part of my bachelor’s degree programme at AMA
International University.
Current Trends in the Energy Market
Market Highlights:
1. The US government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) released last week its
2015 edition of its Annual Energy long term Outlook (AEO – up to 2040). In the AEO 2015
Reference Case, the price of Brent crude oil is $56/bbl in 2015 (compared to the current
price of $63/bbl). The EIA says that the prices rise steadily after 2015 in response to growth
in demand; however, downward price pressure from rising US crude oil production keeps
the Brent price below $80/bbl through 2020. The EIA’s 2020 Brent forecast of $79/bbl is
down by $18/bbl from the $97bbl 2020 forecast in last year’s AEO.
Though the Reference Case predicts that US crude oil production will start to decline after
2020, increased output from non-OECD and OPEC producers helps to keep the Brent price
below $100/bbl through most of the next decade and limits price increases through 2040,
when Brent reaches roughly $140/bbl, the EIA says.
Under the EIA’s ‘Low Oil Price’ case, the Brent price is $52/bbl in 2015 and reaches $76/
bbl in 2040. In the ‘High Oil Price’ case, the Brent price hits a whopping $252/bbl in 2040.
2. Some industry sources said that Saudi Aramco has started testing parts of its Wasit gas
programme, raising hopes it can be begin part operations this summer when demand for
power peaks. But the plant won’t be fully operational before the end of the year or the first
quarter of 2016, said the sources.
3. After recently exporting its first high-quality diesel fuel, YASREF reached another
milestone last week by loading 49,000 tons of petcoke. YASREF president and CEO, said
that the petcoke is of great importance since it is derived from Arabian crude, increasing the
added value of this type of petroleum, which contains more energy and less ash, making it
the optimal industrial fuel for power generation in many industries targeting lower operating
costs and higher production capacity at the same time, he said.
4. The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is pondering a host of choices on
Al-Zour Refinery, including an additional budget, the company’s Deputy CEO for Support
Services has said. The company is dropping applications for the fourth tender of the fivephase project, which were too high, he added, noting that seeking an additional budget is
possible for the first, second, third and fifth phases. The main cause for seeking an additional
budget is the rise in costs in the course of time, he said. Thus, tender offers exceeded the
budget approved years before.
5. Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) has set the first monthly official
selling price (OSP) for its new Basra Heavy crude for May, but has likely delayed the launch
of the grade until the following month, according to industry sources. Basra Heavy will be
sold to Asia at $6.85/bbl below Oman/Dubai quotes in May, SOMO said. If the API of the
crude falls below 26 degrees, additional discounts at 60 cents/bbl per drop in API would be
applied, traders said.
6. South Korea’s GS Energy said last Tuesday it has bid for a stake of up to 5% in the
ADCO oil concession onshore Abu Dhabi, as speculation mounts that several Asian oil
companies are set to be announced as new partners in the giant 1.8 million barrels per day
(b/d) capacity project.
The UAE’s state-run ADNOC is expected to sell 30% of the ADCO concession this year
having already awarded a 10% stake to French major Total in January, and Asian companies
have made strong bids to join the concession.
7. Swiss trading firm Trafigura will buy Nexen Energy’s third-party oil lease business in
Western Canada, Trafigura said on Friday, but did not disclose the purchase price. Thirdparty leasing involves gathering crude from small oil producers in Canada and selling it on
the global market.

Nexen,

wholly owned subsidiary of
China’s CNOOC Ltd, cut

and said it is closing down its

Key Issues Discussed/Raised at the EHSC Meeting
on Tuesday, 14 April 2015
Bapco’s EHS Committee held its monthly meeting for April
2015, and the following topics were discussed:
• There was one Non-Lost Time Injury (NLTI) to a
contractor reported during March 2015. YTD there have been
3 NLT and 2 First Aid injuries.
• Congratulations to all on achieving the personal safety
milestone of 8 million hours without an LTI on 11th March
2015. Although this was a significant achievement, however a
recent incident in which a P&U employee fell from a vertical
ladder from a height of 5 meters and luckily sustained a FA,
demonstrates the sense of vulnerability which could lead to
serious injuries. Therefore, we should not be complacent and
must remain focused to ensure and sustain the level of good
performance in order to achieve the target of 12 million hours
without an LTI.
• 23 Process Safety Incidents, of which 6 have been PSE
tiered, were recorded during March 2015, out of which 5 were
tier 3 and 1 tier 4 incident as per API RP754 standard.
• There were 5 vehicle accidents during March 2015, 3
involving Bapco and 2 contractor drivers. Only 1 accident was
due to Bapco driver fault. YTD there have been 19 vehicle
accidents compared to 25 in 2014.
• There were 3 planned flaring events during March from
GDN for routine maintenance operations. The Environmental
Performance Index (EPI) stands at 8.2 vs. target of 7 which is
an excellent performance, well done to all; the challenge is to
sustain this level of environmental performance by remaining
focused on our operations and prevent any uncontrolled releases
to air, water or land and to achieve continual improvement in
our environmental performance.
• The OELT has reviewed the recommendations from the
Chevron OE audit and identified appropriate actions which
have been assigned on the CAPA system to concerned staff.
The progress of these will be monitored by the EHSC on
regular basis.
• A detailed review of incident reporting and investigation
status was presented including the status of action items
resulting from incident investigations. The list of overdue
action items will be circulated to all concerned to ensure
these are closed. It is imperative that we follow the incident
investigation standard and report all incidents on IIR as per the
required timescales and also to implement recommendations as
appropriate from incident investigations to prevent recurrence
of such incidents.
• The annual EHS luncheon will be held on 23rd April
2015.

Are you Getting Enough Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 is a vitamin which is found in foods such as
meat, fish, and dairy products – of course, it can also be
made in a laboratory and sold in supplement form. This key
vitamin is used for treating and preventing deficiencies
which result from its levels being too low in a person’s
blood. It is also used to treat pernicious anemia, a serious
type of anemia that is generally found in older people.
Supplements are taken by mouth or by a gel that is
applied inside the nose.
Other uses for this highly important vitamin include
treatment of memory loss; Alzheimer’s disease;
boosting mood, energy, concentration and the
immune system; and slowing aging. It is also used
for heart disease, lowering high homocysteine levels,
male infertility, diabetes, sleep disorders, depression,
mental disorders, weak bones (osteoporosis),

Annual Health & Safety Luncheon and Awards Presentation Held
More than 300 Bapco and contractors employees attended
an annual luncheon held on 23rd April, 2015 at Bapco
Club in Awali to celebrate Bapco’s environmental, health
and safety (EHS) achievements for 2014.
This annual gathering is an important event in the Bapco
calendar during which EHS performance is reviewed,
and awards are presented to Bapco departments and
contractors who excelled in the environment, health &
safety (EHS) performance and practices during last year.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Peter Bartlett, Bapco Chief
Executive commended Bapco not only for its outstanding
EHS performance but also for the role it plays in
promoting EHS in Bahrain and the region. Dr. Bartlett
also congratulated the winning Bapco departments and
contractors for creating a safe workplace and protecting
the environment. Bapco’s Chief Executive linked EHS
with productivity and noted that “…outstanding EHS
performance breeds outstanding business performance”.
Dr. Bartlett continued by noting that “…if you are good
at EHS, you are good at what you do and vice versa”.
He further stressed on the role Bapco leadership team,
employees and contractors play to attain an outstanding
EHS Performance. “Leadership support and commitment,
and employees and contractors active participation, are
the basic ingredients of an outstanding EHS culture and
hence performance. We have this recipe at Bapco,” said
Dr. Bartlett.
Part of the annual luncheon and awards presentation
is a detailed overview of 2014 performance and future
challenges which was delivered by Mr. Khalid Al
Sabbagh, Bapco Acting Deputy Chief Executive and
the Acting Chairman of Bapco Environment, Health &
Safety Committee. Mr. Al Sabbagh said in outlining last
year’s EHS performance that “We have demonstrated
in the second half of 2014 that we are able to achieve
excellent EHS performance, and we were able to set
records like 8 million employee-hours worked without a
lost time injury by the end of the year, which went hand in
hand with our outstanding reliability performance when
we achieved 374 days without a reset of our reliability
clock. A more reliable facility is a safer one, which we
were able to demonstrate last year. But we will not rest
on our laurels and we are determined to excel even more
in our EHS performance in 2015 and the years to come”.
In conclusion, he congratulated the winning departments
of Plant Maintenance Department for Category 1,
Technical Services Department for Category 2, Comsip
for Large Contractor and Ma’ameeri Contracting for
Small Contractor. The shareholder awards, which are an
initiative of H.E. Dr Abdul Hussain Ali Mirza, Minister
of Energy, went to Ahmed Zayed (Shops Inspector,
Reliability Engineering Department, Bapco), Salah
M. Taqi (Superintendent, Special Assignment, Bapco),
Samah Al Hamad (OEMS Leader, Quality Assurance
Department, Bapco), Ali Jumna juma (Senior Safety
Engineer, Comsip), and Seree Hari (Safety Manager,
Cape). The winners were identified for supporting EHS
initiatives & adding value, transferring good practices
to others (i.e. individuals, groups, companies) and
innovative management of EHS issues. The winners
received their award and recognition from Bapco’s
Chief Executive.

Retiree Recalls Time in Bapco
Looking back at his early years with a touch of nostalgia
and astounding clarity, Mr. Asghar Ali Akbar talks about
his tenure with Bapco in the 1960s as well as the times
that ensued. The former Bapco employee recalls, “My first
foray into a professional setting began after I completed
Primary School and joined Bapco as an apprentice from
1963 to 1967. I eventually worked here until 1971, gaining
invaluable experience over my time in the company.”
Despite a promising start to his career, there was still much
more to follow. “Alba was just being established at that
time and they were looking for an Instrument Technician
- volunteers who were willing to transfer from Bapco
included. This is when I joined Alba, mainly due to the
absence of opportunities in Bapco at that time for me to
pursue academic endeavours. I was a teenager at the end of
the day, and getting an education was constantly at the top
of my list of priorities” he explains. “There was practically
no time to pursue such opportunities on my own– in fact,
I finished with Bapco on a Wednesday and started with
Alba immediately, on the subsequent Saturday. And to add
to that, I was a young man, married in my teenage years,
and I was blessed with a daughter even before I earned my
certificate of apprenticeship in Bapco!”
“But despite the obstacles that I faced, I continued to
study on my own, eventually earning GCEs in English,
Mathematics and Engineering Drawing in addition to
having a strong hold of my native Arabic and a good
knowledge of Hindi. Education was everything to me, and
I did all that I could to gain as much knowledge as I could,
academic or otherwise.”
“Even throughout my several years in Alba, I requested an
opportunity to study but the company was unable to grant
my request as they were short of technicians on line (on
site). So considering all these factors, my dream of studying
seemed like it was slipping further away, when I left Alba
in 1976 with only a glimmer of hope. My next employer
was Bank Melli Iran, who was initially apprehensive about
hiring a Technician but relented after testing my skills and
learning of my GCEs which deemed me appropriate for
a job with them. Again, I left Alba on a Wednesday and
began with Bank Melli Iran on the subsequent Saturday,
which was the start of the working week back then.”
But dreams can only run so far, if you remain hot on
their heels. Mr. Akbar testifies, “After a stint with Bank
Melli Iran, I was accepted into the Electricity and Water
Authority, where I finally got an opportunity to study and
earn a Diploma in Management Studies at the University
of Bahrain.” “Despite the pressures of being a husband
and a father and having to run a household, I did not let
this extinguish my drive and desire to study” Mr. Akbar
reflects. “One thing I must mention is that throughout
all those of years of service, I got involved in whatever
short courses or training programmes that I could, in
order to develop and sharpen my professional skills. I
studied via correspondence as well. When I finally took
early retirement after a long and diverse career, the prime
By: Dinesh R
Outside Clipper built during Mr. Asghar’s apprenticeship
motive was so that I could devote more time to studying. I
am what you may call a lifelong learner, in the truest sense
of the word.”
And like it has been proven on innumerable occasions,
hard work and resolve pays off without doubt. “Today, I
am the father of four daughters and two sons; the author of
three Arabic titles and I have also successfully graduated
with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from the
University of Madras.” “I am glad with what I’ve been
able to achieve over my lifetime with the blessings of the
Almighty” concludes Mr. Akbar, sharing with the Bapco
PR team treasured publications and artifacts from his
tenure in Bapco dating back to over fifty years ago.
Keeping Safe at Home During a Fire
1. React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm go off. If
you hear your smoke detector or alarm going off and see
fire, try to exit your home as safely as possible. Do not try
to grab your phone, valuables, or you’re other important
possessions. Your only concern should be getting yourself
and your family members out safely. If it’s nighttime,
yell loudly to get everyone up. You may only have a few
seconds to escape safely, so ignore all secondary concerns
that have nothing to do with staying alive.
2. Safely exit through doors. If you see smoke under a
door, then you cannot go out that door, because smoke
is toxic and fire is sure to follow. If you don’t see smoke,
put the back of your hand up to the door to make sure it
doesn’t feel hot. If the door feels cool, then open it slowly
and pass through it. If your door is open and there is a fire
preventing you from exiting the room, close the door to
protect yourself from the fire.
•If the door is hot or there’s smoke under it and there are no
other doors to pass through, you will have to try to escape
through a window.
3. Protect yourself from smoke inhalation. Get low to the
floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to evade
the smoke. Though you may think that running is faster,
encourage your family members to crouch or crawl, too.
Smoke inhalation causes people to become disoriented and
can even render a person unconscious. Knowing this, you
should cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by
or through a heavily smoke-filled room.
•You can also place a shirt or a wet rag over your nose and
mouth, but only if you have time. This will only buy you
a minute or so, which is not a lot of time, but it does help
to filter those products of combustion which lead to smoke
inhalation.
4. Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire. If your
clothes catch fire, immediately stop what you’re doing, drop
flat to the ground, and roll around until you put the fire out.
Rolling around will smother the fire quickly. Cover your
face with your hands as you’re rolling to protect yourself.
5. Ward off the smoke if you can’t get out. If you can’t
escape your home and are waiting for help, don’t panic.
You may not be able to get out, but you can still take some
measures to ward off the smoke and stay safe. Close your
door and cover all vents and cracks around it with cloth or
tape to keep the smoke out for as long as you can. Whatever
you do, don’t panic. You can always reclaim some measure
of control, even if you feel trapped.
6. Call for help from a second story window. If you are
trapped in your second story room in the event of a fire,
do what you can to get yourself to an area where people
will be able to hear you or see you. You can take a sheet
or something else - white preferably - and hang it out
the window to signify that you need help when the first
responders get there. Be sure to close the window
-- leaving it open draws the fire towards the fresh
oxygen. Put something down to prevent the
smoke from coming underneath the door, such as
a towel or anything that you can find.
7. Escape from a second story window if you can.
If you have a two-story house, you should have
an escape ladder that you can throw out in case a
fire or other problem happens. If you really must
get out of the window, look for a ledge and if
there is a ledge, you can get yourself out onto
the ledge facing the building. Always face the
building structure when exiting a window on an
upper floor. From a second story, if you have to
hang, you might get closer to the ground and you
could potentially let go and fall to safety.
•The truth of the matter is that you are
probably a lot safer staying put and trying to
By: Dr. Jamal Ahmed Kamal
compartmentalize by closing doors
between you and the fire, prevent the
smoke from coming into the room,
and putting something over your
nose and mouth to filter the air and
hoping for the best.
8. Do a head count. If anybody is
missing, only re-enter the building
if it is safe to do so. Tell the first
responders immediately on their
arrival if you are afraid somebody is missing. Likewise, if
everybody is accounted for, let the fire responders know so
that they’re not sending people in endangering their lives
looking for others.
10. Get away from the structure. Keep a safe distance
between you and the fire. Take the necessary measures after
the house fire to be safe.
Preventing Future House Fires
11. Form and practice your family’s escape plan. The best
way to prevent house fires is for your family to have a plan
of escape in the event of a fire. You should form your plan
and practice it at least twice a year to get comfortable with
the routine and to ensure that you’ll be clear-headed enough
to carry out your plan if the time ever comes. Here are some
things to keep in mind as you do this:
12. Plan to find two ways to escape from each room. You
should always look for a second way out in case the first
way is blocked. For example, if a door is blocked, you
should find a way out through a window or a different door,
and Practice escaping by crawling, being in the dark, and
having your eyes closed.
13. Practice safe behaviors. To prevent your house from
catching fire in the first place, there are some safety
precautions that you should take:
•Teach your children that fire is a tool, not a toy.
•Always be in the kitchen when you’re cooking something.
Don’t leave cooking food unattended.
•Do not smoke in the house. Make sure you put out your
cigarettes completely.
•Dispose of any electronics with frayed wires, which could
lead to a fire.
•Avoid lighting candles unless they’re directly in your light
of vision. Do not leave a lighted candle in a room where
no one is.

Middle East Union wins Sponsors’ Trophy
As the competition playing season draws to a close at Awali Golf Club, an event
was held on Saturday, 11 April specifically to show the Club’s appreciation for its
sponsors - the Sponsors’ Trophy competition. In teams of four, scoring being
Team-Stableford with the best three scores counting, sixteen teams with players of
mixed ability took on the eighteen hole course in conditions that were exhaustingly
warm. Indeed, one team not used to the climate only managed to navigate three
holes, subsequently coming to their senses and heading for the Clubhouse. Others persevered and Middle East Union returned the winners with 122 points, team
members being Abdulrahman Amin, Mohammed Salmeen, Abdulla Sultan Faraj and
Salem Khalifa. In runner-up position adrift by two points were Bapco-A (Abdul Elah
