A grand synthesis of styles ranging from plainchant and polyphony to operatic arias and dance forms, it unites huge forces in a work of stunning musical architecture. Organist Paul Jacobs and trumpeter Guy Few are pre-eminent players of their respective instruments, quick-witted technical wizards with sharp musical instincts. In a duo recital that promises crackling energy, Jacobs plays a mostly French set, including works of Duruflé and Vierne. And the two will team up for duets by Viviani, Krebs, and others. This year’s season launches MATTHEW HALLS’S tenure as OBF artistic director. A Brit still in his thirties, and with a fast-growing reputation as one of the most versatile and charismatic conductors of his generation, Halls’s inaugural season demonstrates his scholarly roots and the breadth and diversity of his repertoire. Covering two centuries and four countries with an underlying theme of Love and War, their grand tour includes music of Matthew Locke, John Wilbye, Giovanni Gabrieli, José Ximénez, and Samuel Scheidt. Sponsored by Valley River Inn Grammy Award-winning Paul Jacobs has been known for such feats as a complete traversal of all of Bach’s solo organ music — which he has memorized — in one, 18-hour marathon concert. He wowed audiences in an all-Bach OBF debut last summer, and he returns this year with a program that includes Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Handel protégé John Stanley. Sponsored by Kersten Law Group JULY 1 Bach: St. Mark Passion Tuesday July 1 » 7:30 pm BEALL CONCERT HALL Yulia Van Doren, soprano; Reginald Mobley, alto; Nicholas Phan, tenor; Dashon Burton, bass; Tyler Duncan, bass; Berwick Chorus of the OBF; OBF Baroque Orchestra; Matthew Halls, conductor In contrast to Bach’s St. Matthew and St. John Passions, pillars of the choral repertoire, the St. Mark is known only through its existing text and a handful of mentions in contemporary accounts, with no trace of the actual orchestral or choral parts. Building on the belief that Bach borrowed from his existing works to create the arias and choral movements (a common practice of the day), MATTHEW HALLS has written new sung recitatives, based on his extensive knowledge of Bach’s form and style, in collaboration with Zurich-based scholar and organist DOMINIK SACKMANN. JUNE 30 6 Hinkle Seminar: Reconstruction of St. Mark Passion Monday June 30 » 10 am THE STUDIO Endowed by the Hinkle Charitable Foundation Matthew Halls conducts soloists and the OBF’s Berwick Chorus and Baroque Orchestra in his own reconstruction of the St. Mark Passion, prepared in collaboration with scholar and organist Dominik Sackmann. At this year’s OBF, she displays her expressiveness and her complete versatility, with classic pieces, improvisation and a collaboration with the Eugene Ballet. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, whose lush orchestration and rich harmonies represented the late flowering of Romanticism. In the first of two commemorations this season, OBF players present a variety of chamber works, from the early Violin Sonata to the sextet from Strauss’s last opera, Capriccio. Sponsored by Valley River Inn Bach: St. Mark Passion PORTLAND Wednesday July 2 » 7:30 pm TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL Please see July 1 for details Sponsored by American Airlines JULY 5 Jonathan Manson CELLO Thursday July 3 » 7:30 pm BEALL CONCERT HALL J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites are the bedrock of the instrument’s solo repertoire — or alternatively, the Everest of a cellist’s career. Jonathan Manson, a leader in period cello performance and founder of the viol consort Phantasm, plays three of them, interspersed with Ricercars by the 17thcentury cello virtuoso Domenico Gabrielli. Sponsored by Valley River Inn Creation Triple Bill Saturday July 5 » 7:30 pm SILVA CONCERT HALL OBF Symphony; Antoine Plante, conductor Join us for a rare choreographic collaboration, as the Eugene Ballet Company teams up with OBF in three perspectives on creation. Brilliant pianist Gabriela Montero provides the music, with adaptations of ballets by Jean-Féry Rebel and Darius Milhaud, as well as the French Suite No. 2 by J.S. Bach. Sponsored by American Airlines Also: Portland Sunday July 6 » 3 pm NEWMARK THEATRE Sponsored by American Airlines 8 14 9 PERFORMANCE HELMUTH RILLING JULY 6 7 PIANO Monday July 7 » 7:30 pm OBF co-founder HELMUTH RILLING continues to inspire concert-goers, as we welcome him in his first season as emeritus director. As one of the world’s most accomplished conductors, Rilling brings his incomparable artistry and interpretation to the Discovery series, Mozart and, of course, Bach. BEALL CONCERT HALL Gabriela Montero commands masterworks from two generations of Romantic composers, Brahms’ Op. 119 and Schumann’s Fantasy in C, then demonstrates her acclaimed improvisational skills, rare among classically trained musicians, with themes provided by the audience. Strauss Soiree II Sunday July 6 » 7:30 pm BEALL CONCERT HALL July 7 Discovery III: Ascension Oratorio Tamara Wilson, soprano; Nicholas Phan, tenor; Tyler Duncan, bass Following in the tradition of Schubert and Schumann, Richard Strauss was the last great standard bearer of the German lied. This summer’s second Strauss Soirée, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the great late Romantic composer’s birth, features three festival favorites — Tamara Wilson, Nicholas Phan and Tyler Duncan — in an evening of sumptuous song. Director Emeritus Helmuth Rilling returns to conduct large forces in the Requiem — in a completion and edition by festival favorite Robert Levin — and another late minor-key Mozart masterpiece, the Symphony No. 40. This year they commemorate anniversaries of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (b. 1714), Pietro Locatelli, and Jean-Philippe Rameau (both d. 1764) in works ranging from the plaintive to the gracious to the dramatic. Rachmaninoff All-Night Vigil The PBO Tour sponsored by U.S. Bank Support provided by the Oregon Cultural Trust Also: Thursday July 10 » 9 pm SFYCA chorus; OBF Symphony; Anton Armstrong, conductor; Helmuth Rilling, conductor The academy’s young singers come from all over the country for two weeks of intense training under St. Olaf College’s legendary choral leader, Anton Armstrong. They light up the stage with their energy and passion. Highlights of their program with Anton Armstrong, Helmuth Rillling and the OBF orchestra include sacred motets by Bach and Mozart, plus a new Magnificat by David Childs. NEWPORT Thursday July 10 NEWPORT PERFORMING ARTS CENTER For his All-Night Vigil, one of two compositions he most prized, Sergei Rachmaninoff delved deep into the legacy of Russian liturgical music to create one of the great testaments to the awe-inspiring power of unaccompanied voices. Based on traditional chant, the music reaches expressive depths with rich harmonies anchored in a bedrock of low basses.
