It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to OBF 2016,
celebrating the very best of choral and orchestral music right
here in downtown Eugene. This summer we’ve placed the great
Johann Sebastian Bach right at the heart of our programming,
opening the festival with the first ever OBF performance of his
iconic Mass in B Minor on historical instruments. If you think
you know this piece well, we invite you to come and experience it anew with fresh ears. If this will be your
first experience of the work, we look forward to sharing with you some of the greatest music ever written.
Other transformative and uplifting choral masterpieces on offer this summer include Bach’s Christmas
Oratorio and Magnificat, Brahms’ timeless “German Requiem” and an absolutely not-to-be-missed world
premiere OBF commission by one of the greatest living composers, Sir James MacMillan.
In another major coup for OBF, we couldn’t be more thrilled that Punch Brothers will be joining us this
summer, filling Silva Hall with their unique fusion of musical styles and unparalleled virtuosity. This is a very
special opportunity to hear one of the fastest-rising groups on the circuit.

Symposium (Beall)
I have a confession to make—in many ways, I am the least likely
person to be in classical music.
Growing up in a rural area, there were no arts in my small town of
500 other than the local minister’s wife who provided piano lessons.
And yet, as a piano student, music increasingly became the language
through which I conveyed all my emotions. Eventually, as my exposure
grew to encompass vocal music, nothing in the world matched the
passion and the connection to community that I felt and continue to
feel through singing, playing, and absorbing music. I would imagine
that music also speaks to you in some deep, similar way.

That’s why Oregon Bach Festival is unique. No other festival provides such distinctive opportunities for
entertainment, education, and enrichment. Artists and audiences journey to Eugene from all over the world. You
might say our festival feels a bit like a family reunion. Students in the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy
and Berwick Academy are provided a home for the kind of in-depth learning that simply wasn’t available to me.
You have the opportunity to create personal relationships with those musicians and, through your patronage,
impact the music that fills our concert halls.
In that spirit, let me say, “Welcome!” Though I have admired Oregon Bach Festival for as long as I can remember,
this will be my first festival with you, my expanding musical family. I’m looking forward to taking this musical
journey with you, and I hope you’ll find me this summer and say “Hello!”
Warmly,

Hailed as “a cathedral of sound” and “as lofty in design, scope and
expression as anything written by the hand of man” by NPR, the Bach
magnum opus is one of the most complex and elaborate works of
the era. For the first time in OBF history, the Mass in B Minor will be
presented with period instruments and at Baroque pitch.
Sponsored by Wildish Companies
Nicholas Phan has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s most compelling
tenors. Regarded as “a fine mixture of poetry and strength” by Gramophone
Magazine and “one of most beautiful young lyric voices around” by Opera
News, Phan shares his love of Schubert and Britten during an intimate
evening of music featuring the tenor’s signature charm and style.

The early 19th century was the golden age of the clarinet and Carl Maria von
Weber is often considered the father of romanticism in music. Eric Hoeprich,
the world’s leading virtuoso of the early clarinet, performs Weber’s quickpaced and occasionally explosive Clarinet Concerto in F Minor, and Matthew
Halls leads symphonies by Schubert and Mendelssohn in this celebration of
the clarinet and the early Romantics.

Bach’s Magnificat is derived from one of the most ancient Christian
hymns, and was the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by
Bach. Its historic words act as a foil to a modern, cutting edge work from
Scottish composer, Sir James MacMillan. In this world premiere event,
commissioned by OBF, Matthew Halls conducts a deeply spiritual Catholic
view of the requiem from the artist the BBC called “one of the most
successful composers alive.” An absolute must-see in 2016!
