This summer we’ve placed the great Johann Sebastian Bach right at the heart of our programming, opening the festival with the first ever OBF performance of his iconic Mass in B Minor on historical instruments. If you think you know this piece well, we invite you to come and experience it anew with fresh ears. If this will be your first experience of the work, we look forward to sharing with you some of the greatest music ever written. Other transformative and uplifting choral masterpieces on offer this summer include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat, Brahms’ timeless “German Requiem” and an absolutely not-to-be-missed world premiere OBF commission by one of the greatest living composers, Sir James MacMillan. In another major coup for OBF, we couldn’t be more thrilled that Punch Brothers will be joining us this summer, filling Silva Hall with their unique fusion of musical styles and unparalleled virtuosity. This is a very special opportunity to hear one of the fastest-rising groups on the circuit. MacMillan Requiem (Silva) Every summer we make it our number one priority to bring you the very best music, performed by the very best artists from all over the world. We hope you’ll be able to take the journey with us this year, and we wish you all a happy and fulfilling festival season! Matthew Halls Artistic Director 8:00 PM New Pathways IV: Composers Symposium (Beall) I have a confession to make—in many ways, I am the least likely person to be in classical music. Growing up in a rural area, there were no arts in my small town of 500 other than the local minister’s wife who provided piano lessons. And yet, as a piano student, music increasingly became the language through which I conveyed all my emotions. Eventually, as my exposure grew to encompass vocal music, nothing in the world matched the passion and the connection to community that I felt and continue to feel through singing, playing, and absorbing music. I would imagine that music also speaks to you in some deep, similar way. 8:00 PM Viennese Masters III (Reed - PDX) JULY 04 JULY 05 8:00 PM New Pathways V: Composers Symposium (Beall) JULY 06 1:00 PM Organ Interlude: ElRay Stewart-Cook (CLC) 1:00 PM On the House: SFYCA Soloists (Hult Lobby) 2:30 PM Discovery III: Christmas Oratorio Part VI (Soreng) 7:30 PM Berwick Academy with Rachel Podger (Beall) JULY 07 JULY 08 JULY 09 12:00 PM 7:30 PM Conductors Jeffrey and Gabriel Showcase (Soreng) Kahane in Concert (Silva) 9:00 PM Berwick Chorus: Entre Dieu et Moi (CLC) 6:30 PM Let’s Talk 10:30 AM OBF Kids: Tears of Joy Theatre: Jungle Book (Soreng) JULY 10 3:00 PM Brahms “German Requiem” and Symphony No. 3 (Silva) 12:00 PM On the House: Picfest (Hult Lobby) 7:30 PM Rachel Podger performs Sonatas and Partitas (Beall) 7:30 PM Punch Brothers with Gabriel Kahane (Silva) That’s why Oregon Bach Festival is unique. No other festival provides such distinctive opportunities for entertainment, education, and enrichment. Artists and audiences journey to Eugene from all over the world. You might say our festival feels a bit like a family reunion. Students in the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy and Berwick Academy are provided a home for the kind of in-depth learning that simply wasn’t available to me. You have the opportunity to create personal relationships with those musicians and, through your patronage, impact the music that fills our concert halls. In that spirit, let me say, “Welcome!” Though I have admired Oregon Bach Festival for as long as I can remember, this will be my first festival with you, my expanding musical family. I’m looking forward to taking this musical journey with you, and I hope you’ll find me this summer and say “Hello!” Warmly, COLOR KEY Silva Concert Hall Soreng Theater Beall Concert Hall Central Lutheran Church (CLC) / First United Methodist Church (FUMC) Hult Lobby, Reed College - PDX, The Studio, or School of Music and Dance (SoMD) Journey Stamps: Composer’s homeland, the location of a story, or the country that influenced the music.
