Happy 2014 everyone! Your Florida
Watercolor Society Board is off and
running. Our 2014 Convention planning for this year’s event on the east
side of our state, to be held in Deerfield
Beach September 18-21, was most
productive.
Eight years ago, my husband said to
me, “Why don’t you renew the interest you had so many years ago…start
painting again!” I feel sure he envisioned me in front of an easel, on our
balcony for hours at a time, paints and
brushes capturing the scenes. But, as
you all know, it doesn’t quite evolve
that way. There are classes, workshops,
art supplies, shows and conventions!
Deliver the paintings, pick them up
and be involved in the Art Community!
I am so happy about the turn I took
in my life those ‘short’ eight years ago.
I had no idea then about the wonderful friends and great opportunities I
would meet along the way. It has been
such a nice trip! My mission now is to
spread the feelings of the excitement
and fulfillment of art to more people,
to those who may not yet see our world
and its enchantments, especially the
retired and almost-retired. It’s a second
life for so many…a focus after family
and/or career.
Start work on your masterpiece...
channel your enthusiasm to your canvas. Mark your calendar for September

he most important thing you need to do when entering a competition is read the prospectus. Most years
small changes are made and it is important that you
are aware of them. This year while there are no size
restrictions, it is imperative that if your work is accepted,
that all compliance areas be strictly adhered to. We will
be unable to arrange to have ANY paintings rematted or
reframed. As always if you have any questions at all, feel
free to use the contact information on the prospectus.

This is a friendly reminder to pay your $40 FWS dues by March 31. You will not be
eligible for the 2014 Florida Watercolor Society Exhibition if your dues are not paid by
March 31. Dues must also be paid to maintain your P1, P2 or Signature statues
in the society.

Myrna Wacknov NWS, CWA : ‘TEXTURE, SELF PORTRAITURE IN THE DIGITAL AGE!’
This workshop is for those artists who are looking
for a shift in their work from copying a photograph
to interpreting an image in some new and exciting
ways. We will be working with our own faces but the
ideas and techniques learned can be applied to any
subject.
Taking advantage of the amazing power of our
electronic devices, we will take a self portrait using an iPad or iPhone or equivalent device,
learn how to use the Photoshop app PS Touch to manipulate the image in creative ways
then transform some of those ideas into paintings.
The classic approach of designing a painting using the Elements of Design will be combined with utilizing unexplored materials, tools, techniques and pairings. Each day will
start with the element of Texture, plus a focus on one additional element. Day 1: Texture and Shape; Day 2: Texture and Value; Day 3: Texture
and Line; Day 4: Texture and Color. This will be a fast paced, fun and exciting week to help you discover new ways of thinking and working to
create your own unique style and vision.

5th Annual Non-Signature Members Online Show
The show will be online until May 2013.
Congratulations to all of our artists who were accepted into the
2013 Non-Signature Members Online Show. Congratulations
in particular to First Place of $1000, awarded to Chris O’Malley
for “Temple of Mangroves”, 2nd Place of $500 to Roberta Oliver
for “Shadow Lake”, 3rd Place of $300 to Robin Lee Makowski for
“Shadow Point Beauties”, and three Merit Awards of $100 each to
Jean Withington Yedkois for “Winter Red Fox”, Fran Naughton for
“Industry”, and Teri English for “Blowing in the Wind”.
Our juror Mike Bailey said, “Congratulations to all of the artists
who were selected for this show! And to those whose artwork missed
the cut, I want to encourage each of you to press onward, simply
paint more, and never give up. Most all of the paintings had very
noteworthy aspects. Some, however, were simply better. Often,
the difference between one painting being chosen and another not is
“Temple of Mangroves”
nothing more than a slight percent difference in technique or design.

And speaking of those aspects, my choices are led by strongly designed paintings which were also substantiated with solid execution. When you see the award winners in this
show, surely you will agree with both aspects. The last and final characteristic that jumps out at any judge is
creativity. How did the artist manipulate the elements such as color or texture to seize the viewer’s attention,
then hold the viewer in some sort of visual conversation. Every painter in this show made strong accomplishments with their work. Having met many of the FWS members in Sarasota this last September, you all have
my best wishes for future painting challenges”.

Use It or Lose It!
Have you been photographing each and every painting you have done, importing it to
your computer and then sizing with a photo manipulation software? Good for you. When
it comes time to submit your masterpiece to the Florida Watercolor Society in May you
will remember how to do it.
But if you haven’t kept your skills current with Gimp or Photoshop Elements or some
other software you may have forgotten how to do it. Now is the time to practice. Use a
digital camera to photograph every painting and size it with your favorite software.
If you need help getting photos of your paintings ready for submission email me with your
questions.

We are asking for donations for the silent auction and raffle to be held at this year’s FWS
convention and tradeshow. We regularly receive art supplies from our venders, but each
year we strive to expand these events to make your visit to the yearly convention more
exciting. We are asking for your help. If you have anything you would like to donate,
please contact me. In addition to helping us, it affords you an opportunity to share with
others your special talents. Maybe you have another
creative avenue aside from watercolor and would like
your fellow artists to be aware of what you have to offer.
