Spring Summer 2007 President's Message Summer, 2007 It was a great pleasure to welcome our newest Elected Members into the society at the Annual Member’s Meeting on Saturday, May 19th. The Annual Meeting and Luncheon was held at the Deal Country Club in Deal, New Jersey. The setting was beautiful and the food was terrific, plus it was a great opportunity to socialize with old friends and make new ones. I’d like to thank all who made the event possible; it was great success. At the April 28th meeting of the Executive Board, fourteen people were elected full members of the New Jersey Water Color Society: This year’s newly elected members were Susanna Anastasia, Bryan Collins, Marie DeVenezia, Lisa Grob, George Karcich, Jan Kiszonak, Ronald McCarty, Leonia Mroczkowski, Hedi Lang Parrinello, Donna J. Roettger, Lois Sanders, Michael G. Tiscia, Marie T. Zukoff, and Nancy Zwerling. I’d like to extend my congratulations to all and I encourage you to get involved in the activities of this excellent organization. I would especially like to recognize Susanna Anastasia and Donna Roettger who will be joining the Executive Board. Susanna is our new Awards Chairperson and Donna will be our new Recording Secretary. The Annual Associates Show at the Morris County Library was held on April 3rd – April 24th. Opening reception was held on April 14th. I’d like to thank Judy Martindale, Jinnie May and all those who helped with this show. Hats off to the award winners, you can see their award winning paintings in this newsletter. Zukoff Nancy Zwerling I would like to remind everyone, this year’s Annual Elected Member’s Show will be held at the Atrium Art Gallery at the Morris County Administration & Records Building on July 20 through October 19 in Morristown. Exhibitions at the Atrium are well attended. Please select your entry carefully, so that your work reflects the high standards of the Society. The building is open to the public weekdays 9:00 to 5:00. I encourage every elected member to put a painting in the show. The Open Juried show will again be at the Monmouth Museum this year. The show will run from September 16th through October 28th. Receiving is on Saturday, September 8th. The opening reception with awards ceremony will take place on September 23rd. Volunteer information sheets were mailed out, please take the time to fill it out and return it to our show chairman, Ken Hamilton. If you didn’t receive one and would like to help out at receiving please give Ken a call or drop him a note. I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable summer. Joel Popadics The New Jersey Water Color Society On-Line Members Gallery As an Elected Member of The New Jersey Water Color Society we would like to invite you to share some of the work that you have been doing over the years on the gallery page of our web-site: www.njwcs.org. We will display work here for members and the public to view. We are limiting the number of submissions to four paintings per member for one year. We hope to include work by Associate members in the future. In order to submit your work please supply a digital image that can be emailed to our web master, Jeff Clapp at [email protected]. Members Slides Needed We are in the process of approaching galleries, corporations and museums on behalf of the Society for possible exhibitions. When approaching a gallery it is helpful to show a packet of slides of our Members artwork. If you have a slide or slides to spare please send them to Joel Popadics, 83 Clifford Drive, Wayne, NJ 07470. Bud Chavooshian Award in the 2006 Garden State Watercolor Society Open Juried Exhibition and an honorable mention in the 2006 GSWCS Members Show. Sandy received Second Place in the 2007 Florida Keys Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition. She was published in the 2006 edition of the Key West Culture Magazine and was the featured artist in the 6th annual Key Women Artists exhibition in Key West, FL, in "Perspectives" a Florida Keys Artist 5 person show at the Florida Keys Community College, had two Gallery Exhibitions (Sodu and Stone Soup Galleries in Key West) and was accepted into the Anna McKee Auction in Key West. Katherine Gray, New Paltz artist, is 1 of 27 artists to have been accepted in the Columbia County Council on the Art's 12th Annual Juried Art Show. Her watercolor, "Cow Crossing," was on exhibit in the Hudson Opera House, 327 Warren Street, Hudson, from March 3rd until April 7th. The Juror was John Weber, art dealer and former owner of John Weber Galley in NYC. Carol Staub was Awarded 1st Place in Mixed Media and Collage in The Artist’s Magazine first open online international juried competition, February, 2007, the painting is featured in the current July/August issue. Carol was also Awarded 1st Place and an Honorable Mention in Watercolor Magic Magazine’s Water Media online international competition, February 2007, the paintings are featured in the current July/August Issue. She was Awarded 1st Place at the Vero Beach Museum of Art Artist’s Club 19th Annual Art By The Sea, February 2007, featured in the March 1, 2007 Wall Street Journal—Art and your car, had 2 Works selected for the American Juried Art Salon 2007 Spring/Summer Show and awarded “Artist-Master Class Status”. She was Awarded the M. Graham Watercolor Award at the 66th Watercolor Society of Alabama’s National Exhibit, April 2007, featured in an article in “The Treasure Coast Magazine”, March 2007 issue, and received an "Award of Excellence" from the Art Addiction Medial Museum's (London, England) juried international online exhibition, May 2007. Lois Sanders Best in Watercolor 2007 at The Gaelen Gallery Juried Art Show at the JCC in Whippany. The exhibit was May 6 - June 17. Essex Watercolor Club Exhibit at the Morris County Library award winners included Award of Excellences to Dolores Ziegler, Ann Michaels, Susanna Anastasia and Mark de Mos, and Award of Merits to Lois Sanders and Associate Members Maria de Mos and Jinnie May. in the News: ASSOCIATE MEMBERS Christina Sanes was included in the Monmouth University Department of Art and Design Exhibition. She was accepted into the Jersey Shore Juried Art Show and the Monmouth Festival of the Arts. Her work was also selected for the MFA museum web site and was an invited artist to the Land Rover Art Exhibit. Mark de Mos was Awarded 2nd Place and Best New Artist at the Skylands Art Show at the Sussex County College in Newton, NJ. He has feature article, “A Light Touch” ,in the Watercolor Magic August edition (now out). Tim Gaydos was Awarded 1st Place at the Skylands Art Show at the Sussex County College, Newton NJ. Hudson Valley Art Associations 76th Annual Exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York awarded Anthony Ventura with the Mrs John Newington Award for Excellence (Best in Watercolor), Joel Popadics with he Edgar Whitney Memorial Award(3rd), James Toogoood with Joseph Krasnansky Memorial Award(6th), Joan Ross witheh John Loughlin Memorial Award for Landscape or Seascape(7th). Also Juried into the exhibit Winnie O’Dougherty, Betty Stroppel, Mark de Mos, Katherine Gray, Ken Hamilton, Mel Stabin and Michael Tiscia, plus Arthur Barbour in Memoriam. Essex Watercolor Color Club’s Winter Members Show in February award winners included NJWCS members, Best in Show winner Betty Stroppel, Awards of Excellence for Mark de Mos and Virginia May (Associate Member) , Awards of Merit for members Nat Lewis, AWS, Ann Taylor and Joan Ross as well as associate members Inese Houlis, Debbie Fryer and Vicki Gainsburg. Debbie Fryer is the current president of the Essex Watercolor Club and the Judge was NJWCS member, Tom Valenti, AWS. Pass the word, Don’t Forget to Send in Your Membership Dues for 2007 We regret to announce the passing of two long time members, Elwood Bender, AWS and Jewel Ryman. Jewel Ryman, a long time resident of Morristown, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. She was painted in Guatamala where she enjoyed painting the native Mayans in their unspoiled natural habitat. She was active with the Essex Watercolor Club, the NJ Center for the Visual Arts and Morris County Art Association and was a past president of the Drew Art Association (Silent Arena) Elwood Bengert, AWS of Wyckoff was a long time member of the NJWCS—over 50 years. He was a graduate of Parsons School of Design and the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts and showed with the prestigious National Academy, the AAPL and AWS where he once was included in their traveling show. He owned an art store, designed stained glass windows and lead art studies in France and Italy. He loved to paint on location and was well known for his paintings of marble.
