CORTEN STEEL
TREND TOPPER
TREND CONICAL TOPPER
Corten steel, also known under the trademark COR-TEN
steel, is a metal alloy composed of iron to which copper,
phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium are added. The
strength is comparable to that of other alloyed steels such
as stainless steel. The brown rust color is the most typical
external characteristic.
This steel alloy was patented in 1932 in the USA by
American Byramji D. Saklatwalla and then further
developed by the United States Steel Corp. The new steel
type was named COR-TEN after its properties: COR
(corrosion resistant) and TEN (tensile strength).
The rust-colored and very thick oxide layer protects the
underlying material from oxygen, which slows down the
oxidation considerably, however, the corrosion continues
in cavities filled with water. It is not necessary to paint the
material thanks to its oxide layer.
