Dear Everlast family,
It is with great emotion that I write this letter to you. As many of you
know, George Horowitz, my father, our former CEO, and the man who
historically has written this letter to you, passed away in November of
2005 after a fight of his own, with kidney cancer. It was his vision that led
to the historic rebound of Everlast.
It has been six years since we bought Everlast. The love for our sport, our
customers, and the professional fighters that make this sport so special
lives on. My fathers’ dreams of rejuvenating this wonderful brand and
sport lives on. We have made tremendous strides in product quality,
innovation and availability, but the job is not done. The job is never done for
a company who promises to forever be THE CHOICE of CHAMPIONS.
It is no coincidence that this issue features “Sugar” Shane Mosely.
“Sugar” Shane was one of the first boxers, back in 2000, to recognize
that the new Everlast team meant business. Early in 2001, I personally
hand-carried to Las Vegas Shane’s first pair of Everlast trunks for his
fight against then-undefeated Shannon Taylor. Shane knocked him out in
Round 5. Here we are, six years later, and “Sugar” Shane is still knocking
people out. Fresh off of his TKO victory over Fernando Vargas, another
tremendous warrior, Shane gives us all an inside look into what he has
endured to stay on top.
This magalog will also bring you face to face with Vicente Escobedo, a
talented, young boxer that many have already compared to the great
Oscar De La Hoya. You will also hear from Paulie Malignaggi, a man never
short on words, who is being given the chance to fulfill his dream and win
a world championship at home in Madison Square Garden later this year
against the extremely tough Miguel Cotto. Speaking of New York, you
will also find an intriguing article with Irish sensation John Duddy and the
revitalization of the Irish boxing fan in New York City.

Amateur boxing is always a major priority for Everlast. Over the past few
months, we have provided equipment to several successful tournaments,
including the U.S. Nationals, The NY Daily News Golden Gloves, a personal
favorite of mine, and the San Francisco Golden Gloves. Congratulations
to the winners and “chins up” to the contenders. There are no losers in
this sport.
The winner of our last sweepstakes spent two unforgettable days in New
York City with the Everlast team and Teddy Atlas. I will let him tell you
about the experience, but I know it was life-changing. I could tell from
the look on Jody Parede’s face after he returned from a four-hour training
session with Teddy.
I am truly honored to have been passed the torch of running this
tremendous company. I worked for my father for almost 10 years. We
shared many dreams, and one of them, most important to you, the valued
customer, was to bring excellence back to this brand. We hope we have
done that and you have my promise, as you had his, to continue to bring
the best to you from the best brand in all of sports, Everlast.

he was my best friend. When my mom died, he was the first guy I called. For
those life decisions, we were go-to guys for each other. It was very special.
That’s what I miss mostly about him. He was a real friend. I miss getting a call
from him in the middle of the night just so he could say something stupid. No
business, just something funny that would make me laugh. When you lose
your best friend, part of you goes to. And I feel that.”

with a terrible disease was being helped
by my foundation to help pay his medical
bills. The boy had tumors on his brain and
they were giving him seizures. Parts of
the dangers were of the child banging his
head – the child had always worn helmets,
but the store-bought ones didn’t fit the
child properly. Kids were teasing the child in school. George found out
about the child, and the next day George had
father, mother and kid in the office coming
up with helmet designs with designers. The
helmet was perfect – cool colors, and the
child wasn’t ashamed of going to school
anymore. George ended up installing foam
rubber in their home to pad their floors.

Reality television got a lesson in the sweet
science in 2005 with the debut of Mark
Burnett’s boxing reality television series,
“The Contender.” The show proved to be a
great success, propelling lesser-known boxers
into the limelight and promoting the sport
internationally. Essentially “Survivor” in the
ring, teams of fighters competed in physical
challenges to earn their team’s right to pick
the fight matchup of the week, with the loser
being eliminated from the competition.
We had an opportunity to catch up with two
of our favorite contestants from season one
of “The Contender,” Peter Manfredo, Jr. and
Alfonso Gomez. We got some updates on
what they’ve been busy with since the show
ended, what we have to look forward to in the
new season (it’s being taped right now), and
what it takes to be a contender.

Everlast: How have your lives changed
since appearing on “The Contender”?
Alfonso Gomez: It’s been unbelievable
how much has changed. I’m recognized
everywhere I go, but especially in Mexico,
where “The Contender” was very popular.
Peter Manfredo, Jr.: It is great most of the
time, but it can be a little tough sometimes,
too. It used to take me five minutes to run to
the corner deli to get a sandwich. Now it takes
more like a half-hour. I’m constantly being
recognized by people. I shake hands, sign
autographs, and pose for photos. Coming from
a small city like Providence, I feel like I could
run for mayor at this point (laughs).
Everlast: Both of you have gotten to take a
look at the new season of “The Contender.”
How does it look?
Manfredo: The fights that I have seen have
been terrific. It’s a risky situation joining the
show because the fights affect your record

and the training regimen is not usually what
you’re used to, but I think the new cast has
seen the first season and learned from our
mistakes. It seems like they’ve gotten a great
bunch of guys together.
Gomez: You’ve got 16 hungry boxers. Some
are looking for their first big shot, others are
chasing their last chance at glory. Everyone
is giving their 100 percent and fighting for
their dreams. I’ve seen a couple of the fights
and I’m really looking forward to seeing what
happens with the rest of the season.
Everlast: A few of you guys looked like you
became friends on the show. Which cast
member do you see the most often?
Manfredo: I’m close with quite a few of the
guys, but I probably see Tarik the most. It’s
hard to keep in touch because we’re all so
busy since the show, but I like to know that
everyone’s doing alright.
Gomez: Out of all the guys, I definitely see
Sergio the most often. He lives around the
corner from me, so I see him all the time.
Everlast: What do we have to look forward
to from you guys in the near future? Any
fights coming up?
Manfredo: None scheduled yet, but I’m ready
to fight again soon. I feel good after beating
[Scott] Pemberton, and I’m ready for my next
opponent. I would love to fight Joe Calzaghe
for beating my friend Jeff Lacy.
Gomez: I am scheduled to fight Gilbert
Venegas on May 4, so I’m excited for that. I
want to build up some buzz this year, get a few
early round knockouts with the ultimate goal
of setting up a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez,
Jr. later on this year.
Season 2 of “The Contender” airs Tuesday
Nights at 10pm beginning July 18 on ESPN.

In our last issue, we held a contest asking readers to send in emails
explaining why they deserved a one-on-one training session with
legendary trainer Teddy Atlas. The winner would receive an expensespaid trip to New York City and a training session at the world famous

the most knowledgeable people in the sport of boxing, but he is also one
of the most giving.
Meet Jody Paredes. After pouring through thousands of amazing
entries, we came across one sent from Amarillo, Texas. Immediately,
Jody’s purpose jumped off the page. A 45-year-old from Amarillo, Jody
volunteers at a local charity called Catholic Family Service. He participates
in an anti-gang intervention program that focuses on physical activity as
a means of keeping kids off the streets. Jody is the program’s resident
boxing trainer, working with kids ages six to 18. An amateur boxer for
most of his life, Jody was looking to take the lessons learned from
Teddy Atlas and bring them back to his home state, where he could
share his newfound skills with the at-risk youth. Jody hoped to show his
pupils discipline, self-confidence and a safe outlet from their everyday
struggles.
Jody and his 23-year-old son, Seth, were flown to New York on March
28. It was their first time in New York City and they were shown the royal
treatment by Everlast. They arrived at their hotel and were welcomed
with a gift bag full of Everlast gear. Then they were ushered to Teddy’s
book signing at Gleason’s and dined in Times Square. Their heads were
spinning when they finally made it back to their hotel, but they were
excited and ready for what the next day had in store for them.
Jody and Seth arrived at Gleason’s at 10:30 a.m. for their training session
with Teddy expecting an “overview on training” lasting an hour at most.
Little did they know, Teddy had come to the gym with a plan. He sat his
two pupils down and talked to them for 45 minutes, asking them about
their thoughts on boxing, their experiences, and their lives. This is a ritual
he follows with any new boxer that comes under his guidance. Teddy
shared his theories on boxing psychology and his philosophies in and out
of the ring, preparing them mentally for the physical portion of the training
as well as how boxing applies to everyday life.
Then it was straight into the ring, where Teddy led the men in stretching
exercises and warm ups. When the actual training began, it wasn’t long
before our contest winners realized what they had gotten themselves
into. Teddy didn’t have them come all the way from Texas for nothing.
They were here to work. Teddy worked them out for almost four hours,
first watching them shadowbox and critiquing their form, then practicing
slipping jabs and proper defensive postures, followed by a whole lot of
mitt-work and finally a round on the heavy bags, stressing the physical and
mental aspects of the sport.
By the end of their session, Jody and Seth looked like they were ready to
collapse – but there were smiles all around. Teddy had given them more
than they could have asked for. Jody and his son had a wealth of new
boxing skills and knowledge to share with the teens in Amarillo, and both
men had an air of confidence about them as they climbed out of the ring.
It was truly a day that the father and son will never forget.

It reads like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster: Proud Italian
kid from the streets of New York overcomes what was thought to be a
career-ending injury and returns to beat Puerto Rico’s most dominant
fighter in Madison Square Garden, all on National Puerto Rican Pride
Day. Cue the music from “Rudy” and the crowd carrying the pride of
Bensonhurst out of the Garden on its shoulders. It hasn’t happened
yet, and many are saying it’s a total fantasy, but hearing welterweight
Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi tell it, it’s as if the story is already
older than yesterday’s newspapers.
Malignaggi (21-0 with 5 KO’s) is slated to face current WBO champion
Miguel Angel Cotto (26-0 with 22 KO’s) on June 10 at Madison Square
Garden. The critics have been vocal and practically united in their
predictions: “Malignaggi is not strong enough.” “His record shows
he doesn’t have the power to stop Cotto.” “Not against Cotto. Not
on that day.”
This is the kind of talk that shifts Las Vegas odds. It’s also the kind
of talk that tends to add fuel to the fire in the belly of the underdog.
Malignaggi not only welcomes the critics, he can’t seem to get
enough of them.
When you’re known as much for having a smart mouth as you are for
having a smart jab, people will tend to talk about you. Everyone who
knows the spiky-haired Malignaggi seems to have an opinion about
him. Some may question the quality of his previous opponenets, but
after seeing him fight, few ever question his heart. Malignaggi is 110
percent pure energy, charisma, machismo and bravado. He’s needed
every ounce of those qualities to persevere and make it to where he
stands today.
In 2004, Paulie broke his hand in seven different places during a
fight. Eager to get himself back in the mix after reconstructive
surgery, he came back a little too soon and fractured his hand again,
this time in two places. That second injury came in the winter of 2004
against Sandro Casamonica, where Malignaggi ended up winning
the fight with a shattered right hand. Surgery followed again – his
second major operation before his 25th birthday. Paulie was out of
action for nine months. This kind of injury history can spell doom for
the career of a boxer as young as Paulie, yet somehow he’s bounced
back. We got a chance to speak with this flashy fighter on the cusp of
the biggest fight of his career. We asked him what it was like growing
up in Brooklyn, where he got his legendary mouth, and why he thinks
Miguel Cotto is his perfect match. Paulie was all too eager to answer
everything…
Everlast: So which is it? Are you an Italian kid from Brooklyn or a New

Yorker from Italy?
Paulie Malignaggi: I associate myself with the Italian kids from
Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I lived all over growing up – New York, Sicily, New
Jersey. Now I get heckled from people all over. I have seen Italian people
at my fights say that I’m a disgrace to Italian people! Well, you know
what? I’m more Italian than they are. It makes me laugh.
Everlast: Do you consider yourself a typical New Yorker? Some people
might say that you’re almost a stereotypical New Yorker.
Malignaggi: I think I embody what New Yorkers are: We don’t care if
other people don’t like us. We’re not scared to be who we are. I’m very
much like that. I’m not scared to be myself. That’s what I love about New
York. The people are real here and the night life is fantastic. More action
happens here than anywhere else in the world, and anywhere else I visit
pales in comparison.
Everlast: You have a reputation for having a mouth. Have you always
been a trash talker?
Malignaggi: I started talking really young. I spoke Italian first, and then
learned English later. I’ve always been a talker, especially if you get my
attention. Some might take what I say as trash talking, and to a degree it
is. But you have to understand, I’m very confident. When I tell the media
that it’s gonna be an easy fight, it’s not trash talking. I’m saying it’s gonna
be an easy fight because I know that’s how it’s gonna end up. So far when
I’ve said these things, they’ve proven true. If people looked back at my
comments after the fight they’d say “You know what? This kid was telling
the truth, it went exactly like he said.” Take it how you want. I definitely
don’t care who I offend when I speak my mind.
Everlast: You tend to evoke strong reactions in people. How does
negative energy affect you?
Malignaggi: Be it fans booing me in an arena or my opponent saying
derogatory things to me, I feed off it. I absorb it like a sponge and let it
all come out in my performance. The more energy I receive, it doesn’t
matter if it’s positive or negative, the better I’m gonna fight. No matter
what. People are better off not talking about me if they don’t like me. The
more negative energy directed at me, it makes me raise my game that
much higher.
Everlast: Everyone sees you as the underdog in your upcoming fight.
What makes you think you can beat Cotto?
Malignaggi: Stylistically, I think it’s a perfect fight for me. Obviously, I
don’t think that there’s anyone that can beat me, but this match up with

Cotto fits me like a glove in terms of my style. I think it will be fairly easy
for me. His style is tailor-made for me. I just don’t see how it’s going to
fall in Miguel Cotto’s favor. I’ve heard some haters say this is gonna be a
one-sided fight, and they’re right. It is going to be a one-sided fight. It’s
just going to be in the Magic Man’s favor.
Everlast: What are you bringing to this fight to counter Miguel’s
power?
Malignaggi: If he’s a power puncher, so what? He’s gonna have to work
hard to land those power punches. If he lands some? Good for him. If he
misses? Bad for him. It doesn’t really matter. Come fight night, everything
he’s gonna do is gonna be neutralized. When I come out on top, there’s
going to be a lot of people jumping on Paulie’s bandwagon that are going
to have some explaining to do.
Everlast: You’ve been asked this a bunch of times in the past couple
of months, but we’re all curious. How’s the hand feeling?
Malignaggi: It’s excellent now. It was nagging me for a long time. It was
a very painful situation because there were seven fractures the first time,
and two fractures another time. We had to rebuild the whole hand. I had
my last surgery in September in ’05, and it’s been better ever since. I had
the doctor who did Micky Ward’s hand and he did an excellent job. I give
him all the credit for saving my career, because there was a time when
I thought that it was all over. It was a painful recovery, but now that I’m
healed up, I’m ready to take on everybody.
Everlast: Where does your fight with Miguel Cotto fall into your career
goals and what are some of your long term goals?
Malignaggi: Miguel Cotto is a small step in the right direction. The first
goal is beating him and capturing the WBO welterweight championship.
My long term goal is simple: Hall of Fame. People have said that Miguel
is a big step in the right direction for me. This is nothing. Miguel Cotto
is very miniscule compared to what I’ve got planned. In five years I see
myself being at the top of the pound-for-pounders. People are gonna read
this and laugh, but I’m championship material. They’re gonna look back on
this interview and say “Hey, this kid was right,” but by then it will be too
late. They can all kiss my ass.

It took the endless frustrations of a bitter divorce for Phil Maier to discover
boxing. Maier, a New York state administrative law judge, like so many
others in the past 20 years, became a white collar boxer. “I had a lot of
excess energy to expend, so I went down to Gleason’s and started hitting
the heavy bag “The rest is history,”he says. Since turning to boxing as an
outlet 10 years ago, Mr. Maier has logged 70 white collar fights on two
continents, earning the respect and accolades of his fellow sportsmen.
He is seen by his peers and the press as the true embodiment of white
collar boxing, and he has in turn become the involuntary spokesman of
the phenomenon. His fight record remains unknown, because in the
interest of sportsmanship and goodwill, there are no winners or losers in
white collar boxing. At the end of three rounds of boxing in full protective
gear, each fighter is handed a trophy, and the referee raises each fighters’
arm in the air. White color boxing pits lawyers against bankers, software
moguls against students, and they all come together to compete for the
love of the sport, the catharsis, and the unparalleled workout.
While each one of his fights has been different, Judge Maier’s philosophy
toward the sport has remained largely the same over the years. “I don’t
get in there to hurt anybody and I don’t intend to get hurt,” he says.
“There’s no reason why white collar boxing shouldn’t be regarded just like
a Sunday softball league or a pickup basketball game.”
Though he does admit that some of the newcomers can be a bit
unpredictable when they are starting out (just ask the wild Texan trucker
that Maier had to knock out in self defense), he says that the majority of
the matches are safe and friendly. Less Gatti vs. Ward, more like friends
going at it for three rounds and hitting the corner bar for beers afterwards.
The bulk of Gleason’s Gym members are now made up of white collar
boxers, and professional fighters from taking notice of the popularity of
the white collar fight nights. A few pros, including Zab Judah, have even
taken on an NYU professor or two at the popular nights, to the delight

of the crowd. Judge Maier contends: “I have felt safest boxing with a
professional. They’re the least likely to take it personally when you’re
trying to punch them in the head.”
Despite the boom in popularity of white collar boxing, the sport has
recently been dealt a staggering blow. This past November, the New York
State Athletic Commission banned white collar fights; the loophole in the
state law that had allowed it to exist for 20 years had been closed. Prior to
November 2005, white collar boxing was legal in New York State simply
because there was no law stating that it wasn’t (the state regulates most
other kinds of boxing matches). The fights had been allowed to exist for 20
years on a mere technicality. It was only a matter of time before someone
blew the whistle to stop the fights. Ever since the ban, Gleason’s owner
Bruce Silverglade has been working with lawmakers to solve the problem
and both sides are confident that they will come to an agreement on how
to regulate the bouts.
“I think it’s only a matter of time before it’s accepted as a safe sport,”
Maier says. “If the state regulates white collar boxing, it will only help it to
become all the more legitimate.” That means more people taking notice,
and more money for the mom and pop gyms which have been forced to
shut their doors in recent years.
As for Maier, he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. “There’s no
reason to think that I won’t be doing this for another 15 to 20 years,” he
says. “I currently spar with a guy who is 79. I could do this forever.”

member of Golden Boy Promotions
and often compared to a young
De La Hoya. The former Olympian
is out to carve his own legacy.

He has the looks, the style, the heritage and the Olympic pedigree. He
even has the voice. Just about everything has been set in place for Vicente
Escobedo to become the next Oscar De La Hoya – up to and including the
fact that he’s signed to Golden Boy Promotions and working directly with
the man he idolized as a child.
Now all Escobedo has to do is live up to the expectations in the ring.
“People tell me that all the time, that I look like Oscar,” says the 24-yearold lightweight. “It’s not like I try to fight his style. I have my own style …
maybe it’s just from me watching him all the time, ever since I’ve been
boxing. To me it’s good, you know. There’s a little pressure, but it inspires
me to work hard and improve myself.”
Escobedo is 9-0 (9 KOs) as of press time, with his next fight scheduled
for April 21 at Arco Arena in Sacramento against an opponent yet to be
determined. If Escobedo is victorious, his next bout could be on the De La
Hoya/Ricardo Mayorga undercard on May 6 in Las Vegas.
Growing up in Woodland, Calif., Escobedo says he was headed down
a bad path before his older brother, Jose, took him to a boxing gym one
day when Vicente was 13 years old. More of a football fan at the time,
Escobedo immediately took to the sport and instantly became a fan of
De La Hoya, a fellow Mexican-American who was then blossoming as
lightweight champion of the world.
“I was getting into a lot of fights at school, getting into trouble and hanging
with the wrong crowd. I was getting pretty bad grades,” Escobedo says.
“Boxing was the thing that woke me up. It kept me busy, spending so
much time at the gym. It gave me a second chance.
“I fell in love with the sport. Everything came naturally because I already
knew how to fight and defend myself being in the streets,” he continues.
“There were a lot of gangs, a lot of drugs around, but boxing really helped
me out.”
Capping a successful amateur career, Escobedo represented the United
States in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. While he didn’t pick up a
medal in the talent-loaded lightweight division, he made a good showing
for himself, winning his first fight by stoppage before dropping a decision
to a much more experienced Rovshan Huseynov of Azerbaijan. Preparing

to go to college when the possibility of a professional career became a
reality, Escobedo made his pro debut on the Bernard Hopkins/Howard
Eastman undercard. He has also fought on a Marco Antonio Barrera
undercard.
Marco Murillo, a California-based trainer who worked with Escobedo as
an amateur, says the fighter has the size, toughness and natural ability to
become something special.
“He’s a good counter-puncher, and he has a fast jab. He’s good at using
combinations,” Murillo said. “He’s so strong, and he has pretty good
height (5-7) to fight at that weight.”
Escobedo, who has a 74-inch reach to go along with that height,
describes himself as a boxer-puncher.
“I like to box – I can box very well. And my jab is getting really, really
good. But I can also fight inside and go to the body,” he says. “I don’t
go out there with the intent to knock anyone out, but usually within the
first round I find out I’m stronger. I’ll try to get some rounds of boxing in
and have a little fun, but when the opportunity comes to take them out,
I’ll take it.”
As is usually the case with a fighter being groomed for big things,
Escobedo is being brought along slowly by manager/trainer David Gutierrez
and Golden Boy Promotions. While he isn’t disrespectful of his opponents
by any means, from talking to Escobedo one can tell he’s waiting for the
day when tougher competition beckons.
Escobedo’s most recent fight was his toughest test – a sixth-round
TKO against Jesus Perez in January. After that fight, Gutierrez personally
assumed the role of trainer. Gutierrez, an attorney, is also an ex-boxer with
19 pro fights under his belt. Under the new leadership, Escobedo says
he’s “going back to basics,” working on becoming more of a complete

Philadelphia
The City of Brotherly Gloves
Philadelphia. For most people the word brings to mind cheesesteaks
and the Liberty Bell. But for boxing enthusiasts, Philadelphia has much
different connotations. Immortal names like Joe Frazier, Charles “Sonny”
Liston, Bernard Hopkins, Harold Johnson and legendary promoter Herman
Taylor all came out of Philly.
“Philadelphia really is a perfect city for boxing,” says Russell Peltz,
longtime local boxing promoter and CEO of Peltz Boxing Promotions since
1969. Few would disagree with him. Aside from claiming some of the
best fighters in history as its own, the city still boasts some of the few
remaining boxing-exclusive venues in the country.
The names of the fighters may have changed on the marquee over the
years, but that doesn’t stop the Philadelphia faithful from packing the
venues every single fight night. Whether you’re a local or just visiting in
Philadelphia, these two remain fan favorites as the places to catch a fight.
The Blue Horizon
If you’re planning to see a fight in Philadelphia, you have to go to the Blue
Horizon. Fondly dubbed by locals as “the best place to watch boxing in
the country,” the Blue Horizon has been putting on shows for almost 50
years in North Philadelphia. This 1860s era mansion on Broad St. has seen
thousands of fights over the years, earning it legendary status among the
world’s boxing purists. “There’s not a bad seat in the house,” says Vernoca
Michael, CEO and President of the Blue Horizon for the past 12 years. “And
during the night of the fight, the energy in the room is just electric.”
The electricity must be magnetic, because fight fans flock from around
the globe to visit the venue. “I’ve had tourists stop me on the street and
ask me how to get to the Blue Horizon,” says Arthur Abraham, a plumber
and lifetime resident of the neighborhood. “Even after I explained the
Blue Horizon was closed that day, they still wanted to go see it. It just has
a draw for people.”
New Alhambra
The Blue Horizon isn’t alone in the fight game. With the success of their
promotion company, Russell Peltz & Joe Hand opened the New Alhambra
to the fight game in 2004. This venue, formerly known as Viking Hall,
has served Philadelphia as an arena for a variety of events for years,
including being the home base of the now defunct Extreme Championship
Wrestling organization. After assuming control of the building, Peltz &
Hand renamed the hall after the long extinct Philadelphia boxing club,
The Alhambra. Growing in popularity by the day, the New Alhambra has
recently gained national notoriety and recognition, playing host to a full
house on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”. This venue and the Blue Horizon
are keeping boxing fans on their feet and insuring that Philadelphia stays
on the boxing map for years to come.

Everlast: Have you always been skilled with the jump rope?
Micky Ward: (laughs) No way! I started using the jump rope when
I was eight years old, and it was really difficult to learn. I was
probably 18 years old before I really had any mastery of it.
Everlast: Could you see improvements in your ring performance
from using the rope?
Ward: Definitely. When I was younger, I was a good boxer. Later in
my career, I became known as more of a brawler than a boxer, but
the rope helped me develop as a boxer early in my career and that
never left me. I had good footwork and balance, and I owed a lot of
that to the time I spent jumping rope.
Everlast: So jumping rope is something that you recommend
for all boxers?
Ward: Absolutely. A solid rope session is an essential part of a
balanced workout. Since I’ve gotten into training other guys, I’ll
always have them warm up with the rope before doing anything
else. Not only does it build the legs and your coordination, but it’s a
great cardio workout, too.
MICKY WARD’S 15-MINUTE JUMP ROPE ROUTINE
(as a pre-workout warm up)
1. Go easy at first. Go slowly in a forward motion and give your body
time to warm up. Let your body dictate the pace of your workout. Don’t
let yourself get out of control. The concentration and focus necessary in
creating rhythms are just as important as the physical workout.
2. During a fight, you’re constantly varying speeds. Jumping rope should
be no different. Be conscious of not staying in one rhythm for too long.
You need to be able to vary your speeds without losing control.

3. As your conditioning and strength improves, add movement to your

Everlast: How did you get involved with boxing?
Ray Rodgers: I started boxing in 1947 when I was 10 years old. Through
5th grade, I lived in Oklahoma and I was lucky. Even in grade school, boxing
was an integral part of the school system. After 5th grade, we moved to
Arkansas, and I’ve been in boxing there ever since. Been in it for … well, I
let you do the numbers, but like I said I’ve been in boxing since1947!
Everlast: How did you become a cut man?
Rodgers: Well, again I was lucky. I started coaching boxing back before
the invention of headgear. I came up through the bare-chested, Vaselinecovered days of boxing. You only had to start a round with a mouthpiece.
Once it started, you could spit it out and finish the round out. There were
a whole lot of head butts and these guys would get cut all the time. Now,
there are rules saying what tools you can use and what you can do to fix
a cut in the corner of an amateur fight. Back then, there wasn’t. You had
to learn the tricks. With so many head butts and no headgear, there were
an unbelievable amount of cuts to fix so I received a lot of practice. Now
with headgear and other protective equipment in amateur fights, a lot of
guys don’t get that kind of practice.
Everlast: What products did you use then when you first started and
what do you use now?
Rodgers: I could tell you this: in the old days I used things that are totally
outlawed now. Like Monsel’s Solution, which was an agent that was used
to toughen up the skin. It actually scorches the skin, and it seals right up.
It’s so dangerous, especially with a guy that’s jerky. If it gets in a kid’s
eye, well, that’s just no good. I always say, don’t use anything that’s not
obtainable in an operating room in America.
Everlast: Cut men are so vital but can be overlooked sometimes. Why
do you think that is?
Rodgers: There aren’t many of us left, talking about the old timers. You
got these young guys now… I call them “towel swingers.” You give ’em
a white towel, a few Johnson & Johnson Q-tips and all of sudden they are
big time cut guys. And they wouldn’t know a laceration from a cow patty.

Everlast: What’s your first priority, a bad cut or bad swelling?
Rodgers: Well, they are of equal importance, but with a cut all you gotta
do is stop the bleeding. Swelling actually carries more ramifications.

Everlast: Have you ever had a fight stopped because of a cut?
Rodgers: Never…never.

You can’t get excited and you have to really, really, attend to business.
There’s an old saying – “A cut man is like a 50-second angel.” You get that
saying? You’ve got around 50 seconds to assess, cleanup and address all
the wounds and get your guy ready for battle again. You don’t have the
luxury of laying him down on an operating table and having five assistants
help you. You gotta do it all, quickly and efficiently.

no headgear. I was the kind of fighter that if you missed me it made me
mad. I wanted to be hit. So I got hit a little bit and when you get hit a little
bit, you’re gonna get cut.

Everlast: You’ve been around for a while. Any thoughts of hanging
’em up?
Rodgers: Oh no, I hope I die next to the ring. I am bumping right up
against 60 years in the sport. I’d like to go 70 or 80, probably 90 years if
I can make it. I’m not like some of the guys that do it full time. I mean
I don’t go out and pimp myself often. I won’t go door-to-door with my
bucket: “Need a cut man? Need a cut man?” I just don’t do that. I’m
pretty selective about who I work with.
Everlast: What boxers have you worked with?
Rodgers: A lot of them. I’ve worked with Iran Barkley, Macho Camacho,
Phil Jackson and Tommy Morrison to name a few. Now I work with
Jermain Taylor.
Everlast: Will you be in Jermain’s corner for the Winky Wright fight?
Rodgers: Certainly. You ever met Jermain? Great young man. Really a
pleasure to work for and work with. He’s just getting ready for a minicamp. He’s looking great.

Duddy is thankful for all of his support and knows how to satisfy the
boxing world with his explosive style.
“The reception of the Irish community is great; they really come out for
one of their own,” Duddy says.
But Duddy is drawing the attention of more than just the Irish media,
fighting up and down the East Coast from Boston to Florida.
“The world is looking for a star, and the way the world is today, people
have more in common,” he says.
With his roots as a blue-collar worker in Northern Ireland, Duddy indeed
has a lot in common with the average boxing fan. He is familiar with life
outside of the limelight and knows how to live up to his fans standards
– through plain old-fashioned hard work. Sparring at Brooklyn’s famed
Gleason’s Gym, Duddy is as popular there amongst the trainers, managers
and other boxers as he is with his fans. At the close of his workouts
at Gleason’s, Duddy cools down with a unique exercise reminiscent of
his days as a construction worker. Dripping with sweat, he pounds on
the hulking lorry tire with a sledgehammer. Harry Keitt, Duddy’s trainer,
developed the exercise to simulate wood chopping, a workout practiced
by many of boxing’s greats.
Says Keitt: “John left Ireland for a purpose. Sure he’s making friends
in the process, but he’s taking care of business first. A lot of guys have
talent, but that’s not what makes a champion. It’s desire. John has it,
more than anyone I’ve seen. And you can’t beat that.”
Despite the constant attention he garners, Duddy maintains an even
keel. “I think that I’ve actually become more popular in Ireland since I
left,” he says. “Each fight is like any other. Some are just wrapped in a
prettier package. At the end of the day it only matters what happens in the
ring, and I am taking it one fight at a time.”

On the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, “Irish” John Duddy was more than
3,000 miles from his home, but as the bagpipers first notes brought the
5,000-plus crowd at the Theater at Madison Square Garden to its feet,
the raucous cheers could have placed him back in County Derry, Northern
Ireland. Making his way to the center of the ring amidst the chants of his
name, Duddy was poised to make yet another statement in his budding
career. In less than two minutes he did just that – knocking out Shelby
Pudwill with a crushing right hook, claiming the vacant WBC Continental
Americas Middleweight Title.
Duddy’s precise dispatching of his opponent seemed a mere formality in
the evening’s festivities as his fans rushed him to celebrate after the final
bell and announcement. Only too eager to reciprocate their enthusiasm,
Duddy would take more than a half hour to return to his locker room as
he signed autographs, snapped pictures, and shared the congratulations
of his fans.
In today’s world of superstar athletes and big money contracts, Irish
John Duddy is a rare competitor whose combination of hard work, humility
and humor has made him a fan favorite both in and out of the ring. Perhaps

“Sugar” Shane Mosley has done it all in his storied boxing career. He
put together one of the all-time great amateur boxing records, was
a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, turned pro and has been
a world champion at three different weight classes – lightweight,
welterweight and junior middleweight – and sits today with a record
of 42-4 and the reputation as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters
of his generation.
Shane has fought the best and beat the best and after his last bout, a
10th round TKO over Fernando Vargas, it’s clear that the 34-year-old
Mosley is still on top of his game. We caught up with him while he
was in New York City for the photo shoot for this issue to talk about
his legacy, his pursuit of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and what’s waiting
for him after boxing.

Everlast: In your last fight, you took out Fernando Vargas in a big
pay-per-view fight and you looked like you were on top of your game.
How are you feeling now?
Shane Mosley: Right now, I’m relaxed. I’m calm. I’m just really interested
in my next fight. It’s supposed to be with Vargas again on July 15.
Everlast: Aside from the fact that it will be a big money fight, why give
him a rematch so quickly?
Mosley: I felt the last one was a good fight. I think he believes, “If I
wasn’t swelled up, I could have done better against Mosley.” I obviously
think differently. Each of my second fights with guys after I lost the first
time I did better. Maybe that’s what he’s thinking going in.
Everlast: One of the lasting memories of that last fight was how badly
Vargas’ eye swelled up during the bout. Was his eye something you
targeted after you saw the swelling start?
Mosley: Yeah, his eye really swelled up. I didn’t make a point to go out
of my way to target it because I didn’t want to get away from my plan. It
was caused by my overhand right anyway, so it was in the way no matter
what.
Everlast: How would you describe your boxing style?
Mosley: I would describe myself as a complete fighter. I can punch, I
can move side to side, I can really do everything. I think it’s good to be
considered real versatile like that and I think that’s why I will go down as
one of the best fighters of my generation.
Everlast: Your reputation is that of a more technical fighter, but that
bout with Vargas was more of a brawling fight.
Mosley: I definitely like the slugfests. I’m not gonna lie, they’re fun.
Maybe that’s just the macho in me talking. But I really think that I’m at
my very best when I’m up on my toes and using my speed and smarts
on the other guy.
Everlast: You’re a three-time world champion and like you said
earlier, you will be remembered as one of the best fighters of your
generation. But it doesn’t feel like you get as much shine as a lot of
other fighters. Do you feel like you’re underappreciated?
Mosley: I do feel like I’m underrated and underappreciated. And that’s
why I continue to prove how good I am over and over again. Where I am
right now in my career though, it’s more important for me to give the fans
the best I can in the ring. They’re the ones who pay their hard-earned
money to see me, so I owe it to them. I want to please them. Early on in
my career, I fought more for my legacy and for me. But after all the titles
and all the big fights, it starts to level off. And now that I’m older it’s not
so much about me anymore as it is for the fans.
Everlast: You’re always in top shape for all of your fights. Can you
walk us through your regimen in the months leading up to a fight?
Mosley: Well, two or three months out from a fight, I’m in more of a
building stage. That’s where I’m trying to add strength. One month out
I switch it to more aerobic work and really hitting. About two weeks out
I’m just really letting my body heal, I’m sparring fewer rounds, just letting
everything get back to top form so that there’s nothing lingering when I
step into the ring.
Everlast: Everyone we’ve talked to about you always says you’re a
nice guy. In the ring? Not so much. When do you flip the switch?

Mosley: Most guys change because they can’t eat and they get cranky.
Me, I like to do my changing right before getting into the ring to this
person that’s gonna tear into the other guy.
Everlast: You had one of the greatest amateur careers in the history
of boxing with more than 250 victories. You’ve been a world champ
at three different weight classes and you’ve fought everyone who’s
come your way. What’s your proudest moment in boxing?
Mosley: My proudest moment in my career was probably when I won
my first world title because it was something I had been dreaming about
and working for since I was a little kid. My most exciting moment though
was beating [Oscar] De la Hoya in our first fight. That night changed my
career, my life. My life changed financially because suddenly they were
all big fights and I was now recognized around the world. I beat Oscar on
the world’s biggest stage.
Everlast: You and Oscar have been good friends since you were
young kids. How was it having to fight him with a lot of money at
stake? Did it strain your relationship at all at the time? Was it hard to
put your emotions aside?
Mosley: I’m good friends with De la Hoya but we’re still very competitive
as well. We have similar styles. We’re the same speed in the ring, but
what I think gave me an edge was my bounce and my movement. It’s all
about keeping yourself in check in the ring. It’s never about fighting angry.
You need to be able to turn off your anger, focus on your game plan. You
can’t be throwing wild punches – that’s a great way to get caught. In the
ring I’ve found myself getting angry, but I’ve always stayed in control.
Good fighters are always able to turn off the anger or manage it so that
they can stick to their game plan. A lot of fighters are kind-hearted guys.
They realize you don’t have to be angry for a good fight. Critics perceive
fighters as angry, stupid guys who blow all their money and it’s not that
way at all.
Everlast: Your next fight may be with Vargas, but it’s Floyd Mayweather
you really want, right?
Mosley: Mayweather’s considered the best. That’s why I want to fight
him. I always want to fight the best. What kind of fighter would I be if
I didn’t? Right now though, we’re nowhere close to making it happen.
We’re far away. So right now I’m really only thinking about Vargas. Down
the road, when it’s time to think about Mayweather, that’s when I’ll think
about him. I want him though. Badly.
Everlast: How did you first get into boxing?
Mosley: When I first got into boxing, it was the result of my mother trying
to get me to burn some energy. She asked my dad to take me to the gym
where he was working out and I just took to it. I was nine years old when
I won my first amateur fight. Then I won a lot of fights and I was beating
a lot of guys who were older than me. I knew pretty quickly that I wanted
to be a world champion and I went out and did it.
Everlast: Where did the nickname “Sugar” come from?
Mosley: “Sugar” came from the guys at the gym. When I was 10 or
11 people started to realize that I was real good. I was beating a lot of
veterans and the older guys started calling me “Little Sugar.” I liked it and
“Sugar” just stuck.
Everlast: Aside from boxing, we hear that you’re an avid
snowboarder.
Mosley: Yeah, I love snowboarding. I started about seven or eight years
ago and just loved it from the start. Being out in Big Bear, there’s not much
to do so one day I figured I’d try it, and now I’m pretty good. I can go down
a hill without falling.
Everlast: Do you ever worry about hurting yourself snowboarding?
Mosley: I don’t ever think about getting hurt. Not on the mountain and
not in the ring.
Everlast: How many more fights will there be for you and what’s the
plan after boxing?
Mosley: I’m not sure how many more times I’ll fight. No matter what
though, I want to stay in boxing. I’d like to try promoting or even maybe
some training.

The night before St. Patrick’s Day, we headed to the Theater at
Madison Square Garden to check out John Duddy and Maureen
Shea headline a night of Irish Fighters. Moe Shea had a four-round
contest against LeAnne Villareal, and Moe came into the ring in
killer shape and took care of her business. For four straight rounds,
Moe Shea peppered Villareal with hooks, jabs and uppercuts. Moe
easily took the fight by decision and didn’t lose a point. Moe has
two fights in the coming months in the New York City area, but
neither of her opponents have been announced yet.
