On behalf of the Glenbard South staff and administration, I would like
to welcome students and families as we begin the 2016-17 school
year. A special welcome is extended to the Class of 2020. Next
week, our freshmen will begin their orientation with our student LINK
Crew members as they get acclimated to our school and extracurricular opportunities. It's a great way to kick off the school year.
Once again Glenbard South remains a leading high school in
DuPage County, maintaining its reputation of excellence. With our belief that "all
students can learn at high levels," it is only fitting that Glenbard South has been
recognized as one of the top Illinois schools for closing an equity gap in our Advanced
Placement enrollment. Our mission and priorities exemplify the very essence of spirit
and Raider Pride. To that end, we will use our latest hashtag when communicating #raidersneverquit.
I would like to strongly encourage you to become a Raider Booster member. Glenbard
South is fortunate to have a dedicated team of parents who are developing fun adult
activities and events, gathering volunteers, and supporting the needs of Glenbard

Message from Mr. Cuny:
During the month of August Glenbard South will be finishing up many of
our summer construction projects as we prepare for the opening of
school. We are happy to report that almost all of the projects will be
completed on time and on budget. We have highlighted a few of our
projects below and as we near the opening of school you will notice
many of these improvements.

Refurbished Fieldhouse Floor
Our Fieldhouse is one of the most utilized spaces
throughout the year and this summer we spent funds to
refurbish the surface.
New Press Box Install
One of the most needed projects we are working to complete is to replace our old and
undersized press box in the outdoor stadium. Currently we are preparing for the
installation of this unit during the second week of August. We are in the process of
putting in the support structures before the actual press box will be set in place. We
are expecting this unit to be ready for use during the last week of August.
Theatre Seats Refurbished
Our small theatre has had the original seats still in
use and this summer we provided them a much
needed facelift. This project has been completed and
will be ready for use during the week of August 15th.
New Heating Boilers
While the heating
season is a long way off
we have replaced our
forty year old inefficient
boilers that will
heat our building this fall
and winter. This much
needed project is near
completion and will be ready for use in September.
Glenbard South prepares for iPad rollout and training
As we move into our final deployment of iPads to the remaining senior class and our
incoming freshmen, we are excited about the impact of this technology and how it has
begun to transform learning and how classrooms function. Glenbard is in it's third year
of the deployment and has worked hard to prepare our teachers and students. While
this process has not moved forward without some obstacles, we do feel that this
phase in deployment has helped our school adjust and this will continue as we enter
our first year when all students will be able to utilize the device in their classroom. To
prepare we have offered expanded training for our staff, changed how we organize
and use computer labs and increased our technology staff in order to support our
students and staff. In our registration packet is a list of our Book line and iPad training
dates and times for freshmen and seniors who may be receiving a device for the first
time. Here are some key dates:
Thursday, August 11th- Freshmen Book line and iPad training 9am-3pm with Alpha
breakdown
Wednesday, August 17th- Senior book line and iPad training starting at 2pm.
Appointments should be made for those seniors receiving an iPad. A special mailing
was sent out in July to these senior students.

We are eagerly anticipating our students returning to South! What can
you do to help your students get ready for a successful school year?
Be sure that they find time to read! Studies repeatedly show that
students that read on their own do better in school. Moreover, summer
reading can help lessen the loss of skills that occurs over the summer.

A final great choice to engage in reading is to participate in the Glenbard
Summer Read: "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." A brief synopsis

part of the Glenbard Parent Series on Thursday, August 25.
OPEN HOUSE
Please mark your calendars for September 1, 2016 so that you may attend our
Curriculum Open House. Teachers look forward to sharing with you what your
student's school year will look like in their classroom.
CHANGE IN STATE TESTING
The Illinois State Board of Education has changed the monitoring tool for high
school testing to the SAT test, from the previously used ACT test. Students may
be interested in taking the PSAT test in October not only to become more familiar
with the test but also students in the class of 2018 may qualify for national
scholarships. More information about the PSAT test and the SAT test can be
found at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org. In addition, Kaplan and Excel
Edge are offering test preparation classes at Glenbard South. Students may sign
up for these classes at exceledgeinc.com or Kaplanatschool.com/glenbardsouth.

The staff at Glenbard South is very
excited to welcome the Class of 2020.
On August 15, Freshmen Orientation
will be our kickoff event. Freshmen
Orientation is our school transition
program that welcomes freshmen to help them feel comfortable
throughout the first year of their high school experience. Built on
the belief that students can help students succeed, orientation provides the
structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and
seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and
understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be
overwhelming.
Services
Immunizations
All Freshmen students must submit proof of
immunizations, health examinations or school
physical in accordance with the Illinois School Code
and the rules and regulations of the Illinois
Department of Public Health. This information
should have been provided to Glenbard South prior
to August 1st. Your student will not be allowed to
complete the registration process without a completed health examination and
proof of immunizations. Health records from the middle schools do not fulfill
the requirements for freshman registration. Also, an IHSA sports physical does
not meet the school requirements.
If you have already provided forms to the Health Office, you may disregard
this message.
All seniors are required to show proof of a recent Meningitis vaccination prior
to the start of the school year. Twelfth graders will need to show proof of
receiving two doses of the Meningitis vaccine unless the first dose was
administered after age 16. Without proof of this vaccination, your student will
not be permitted to pick up their schedule and will be excluded from school in
August until the requirement is met.
If you have already provided forms to the Health Office, you may disregard
this message.
Dress for Success
As the school year begins, we would like to remind
students and parents about our dress code. We
encourage students to "dress for success," which
means being appropriately covered. Student
appearance guidelines are clearly articulated in the
student handbook. Dress or appearance cannot be
disruptive to the educational program or contain
vulgarity, obscenity, or promote violence or illegal
activities, such as alcohol, tobacco products, and
drugs/drug use. Extreme brevity in clothing is
inappropriate as well. The midriff area must be
covered. See-through tops, halter-tops, low cut
tops, and clothing that is suggestive are not
allowed. Skirts, dresses, and shorts must not be
excessively short.
Students who violate the dress code policy will be
asked to change clothes and in some cases be sent
home for their failure to comply with the policy. We
ask that parents help us by being attentive to these
regulations.
Senior Parking
Seniors interested in purchasing a
parking space for the new school
year can drop off their parking
applications and payment to Student
Services during "Back to School
Week" for seniors on August 17. Parking applications are available in the
Student Services as well as on the Glenbard South website.
Mindset key to students' success
The start of a new school year is an exciting time filled with
limitless possibilities. It's so important that students start the
school year with a positive mindset and maintain that mindset
going forward. Glenbard South's theme of #raidersneverquit is the
perfect message to send our students.

Perseverance, grit and a growth mindset are key to students'
Superintendent
success. Our instructors, staff and administrators believe all
students can grow academically, and they instill this belief in
students. We support students as they break out of their comfort zone and empower
them to succeed.
South's AP Adventure
Our new AP Adventure program is a good example of supporting and empowering
students. AP Adventure was a free 4-day program for first-time Advanced Placement
students. We hosted the program this summer, helping students prepare for their first
AP class.
The program helps students learn time management and study skills, as well as
the value of study groups.
Twenty-seven Glenbard South students participated.
AP Enrollment Growth
More and more students are challenging themselves by enrolling in Advanced
Placement classes. This semester, 11% more Glenbard South students are enrolled in
AP than were last year. That's impressive!
Teachers' Continuous Improvement
Throughout the summer, our instructors have been busy working on curriculum
projects and participating in a variety of professional development opportunities. I am
impressed with how our instructors continue to improve their teaching practices. Here
are just a few examples of what they did over the summer:
Librarian Diane Mankowski and Instructional Technology
Specialist Stephanie Wallace attended the International Society for
Technology in Education Conference.
Science teacher Ted Heyduck attended Modeling Physics: Mechanics at
Fermilab.
World Languages teacher Ruth Homan attended Using Technology in
Second Language Teaching.
Science teachers Diana Fisher, Tina Schwemin and Sarah Lottino
worked on curriculum for Bridging the Gap Between Physical Science and
Chemistry.
English teacher Cindy Demos and Librarian Diane Mankowski
worked on curriculum related to Flipping the Senior Composition Research Paper.
Principal Sandra Coughlin and Science and Industrial
Technology Department Chair Collin Voigt
attended the Advanced Placement Annual Conference.
I am confident that with your support, your student will grow
tremendously during the next several months. Best wishes for a great

Athletic News
Fall Sports Start Dates and Registration
Fall Sports season is upon us. Football season begins on Monday,
August 8th. The remaining fall sports of Cross Country (B/G), Golf
(B/G), Boys Soccer, Girls Swimming, Girls Tennis, and Girls Volleyball
begin on Wednesday, August 10th. Information on times and locations
for the first day can be found on our athletic website at
il.8to18.com/glenbardsouth (under Announcment and Resources

section). In order to begin on the first day of practice, a student must

be registered in PowerSchool and have an updated physical on file.
Without both of these components completed, a student will not be allowed to
participate.
Fall Sports Parent Meeting
On Tuesday, August 16th, we will have our Fall Sports Parent Meeting. The meeting
will take place at 7:00PM in the auditorium. Parents and athletes of each of our fall
sports should plan to attend. The evening will begin with a presentation from the
South Athletic Department followed by a presentation from Dr. Nicole Detling who will
speak on "Defining Character On and Off the Field."

In the spotlight.......
Grant funds for Wellness
Please join us in thanking and congratulating
Barb Smith (Nurse) and Christa Gifford
(Family and Consumer Science Teacher) for their
leadership on the District Wellness Committee. More
specifically, the work they have done on behalf of
Glenbard South promoting the benefits of wellness
and the importance of developing good habits
regarding fitness and nutrition. As a result of their
hard work, Glenbard South has received funds to be
used for developing wellness activities that educate and engage students and staff.
We also just learned that South has been awarded $2300 from Fuel Up to Play 60 (&
the Midwest Dairy Council)! $1600 toward our "Second Chance Breakfast" efforts and
$700 to start a walking club.
This brings the total to $5300!
