Greener Pastures No Kill Animal Rescue Holiday Issue 2011 It is difficult to believe that yet another year has all but come and gone. Where did 2011 go? This year was a very difficult one at Greener Pastures! We took in a record number of unwanted pets due to the horrific economy. Foreclosures, job loss, & rampant irresponsibility had us bursting at the seams—physically, financially, and emotionally. Sadly, due to the economy, we were unable to help as many unwanted animals as we would have liked. The economy has crippled every shelter in America & Greener Pastures is no exception. But through it all, we have persevered. Saving animals is our only motivation in life here at the farm! Through all the trials and tribulations, we still have had many bright spots! Let’s look back at a few of our success stories from 2011. We have several very nice, beautiful healthy cats up for adoption. Give us a call if you need a furry new friend to Poor Oliver keep you warm this winter. the day we picked him up and took him to the vet. Oliver Oliver is a wonderful 6 yr old Great Pyranese mix who is very lucky to be calling Greener Pastures his home. He came to us in midAugust, the product of a well planned intervention that involved many individuals from here to Pittsburg who desperately wanted to help this poor dog. He was the ‘poster child’ of what animal abuse looks like. A Northumberland County man held “Loser” (yes, that’s what he was called) in bondage his entire life. Oliver was chained to a stake with no shelter, very little food and water and he en- dured daily verbal and physical attacks. Once he got to Greener Pastures, he was immediately taken to the hospital. He was skeletal and afraid of humans. It was pitiful to watch him wince and cower at our every move. His frail body was covered in Look how happy he is now! large wounds about his face, neck, and shoulders from daily beatings. Of course he wasn’t neutered, so we had that taken care of as soon as he was stabilized along with the removal of almost 20 lbs of cantaloupe sized mats that SOS We are DESPERATELY in need of hay this winter season, please continue to help us by contacting Evergreen Haven Farms at (717)- 729-7936 to purchase hay. They graciously drop off any hay that is donated to us. On a typical day during colder months we use about $20 worth of hay. covered his body. There is no way I will ever understand why human (where the word humane comes from, go figure) beings can do this to an animal. How can they participate on a daily basis this cruel demise of an animal in front of family, friends, and neighbors? Oliver—named after Oliver Twist the orphan, is a wonderful, huge, furry bundle of love, who in such a short time, amazingly shed the nightmares of his past. He is ready to go live out the rest of his life with someone as special as he is. Greener Pastures No Kill Animal Rescue Holiday 2011 Inky Early on Halloween morning, many children on their way to school heard the faint cries of a tiny kitten coming from under the streets of Greencastle, PA. Bad luck for this little guy because it was Halloween, he was jet black, he was stuck in the series of under-street spillways and NO ONE wanted to help. Sure, many calls were placed to the local county shelters, veterinarians, police My friends, Inky and Oliver’s stories are a few of the very good reasons why giving the gift of life to the animals at Greener pastures is so important. NO ONE goes the extra mile for animals In closing…... I must once again let you know that this has been a very challenging year for us. As we rescue more & more animals, our operating expenses increase dramatically. This year’s trend of higher prices for food, hay, veterinary services, and general operating expenses have made our job more difficult. Frankly, I don’t expect 2012 to be any easier for us! I say this time and time again, you can’t believe what a mere $5 or $10 can do for an animal in need! I see & hear stories of abuse & neglect on a daily basis, so naturally it breaks my heart to know that we can’t save them all! We strive to never say NO to a mistreated or unwanted animal. That’s why I thank God every day for people & fire departments, and road crews. Around mid-day, on their lunch breaks, a few folks came out to help but after an hour or so, went back to work and all was forgotten—literally! Around 4:30 PM, we got a call from a frantic person on the scene begging for our help. Within 20 minutes, we were on the scene with traps, food, & nets. One of our young volunteers actually crawled on her stomach in 6-8 inches of filthy , cold water, approximately 100 ft or so with only a head lamp and sheer determination to reach this scared, wet, & freezing little angel. He definitely would not have made it through the night as hunger and hypothermia would have claimed his life. Visit our website www.greenerpasturespa.com Morgan, our volunteer, later emerged to a cheering crowd with this tiny 3—4 week old kitten who was lucky to be alive. The Echo Pilot, Greencastle’s weekly newspaper, ran an awesome front page story that week about this heroic adventure. “Inky” is very tame and sweet and is recovering well from the pneumonia he contracted from his ordeal. He will be up for adoption after the holidays. Won’t you consider bringing him into your heart & home and giving him the future he so delike we do here at the farm. PLEASE, our gates simply must stay open so that we can continue to help those animals like Oliver and Inky and so many other helpless animals just like them. like you who love animals as much as we do! So, this holiday season, PLEASE look deep into your hearts & find a way to help an animal less fortunate. Animals right here in our own ‘back yards’ that didn’t ask to be beaten, starved, abandoned or left alone to die. We are the only NO KILL rescue in the immediate 4-state region that will help animals both large and small as long as the funding is there. The targeted end Greener Pastures No Kill Animal Rescue P.O. Box 278 Marion, PA 17235 717-375-2980 result of our work is to place every rescued animal into our adoption program where they can find a new permanent & loving home. Animals which cannot be rehabilitated for adoption due to illness, old age, or social difficulties will live out the rest of their days in a loving environment filled with the dignity & quality of life they deserve. Lastly, and certainly most importantly, Greener Pastures is a NO KILL shelter—it says it in our name. Unlike other local shelters, we do not euthanize unadoptable animals! Please remember the main reason their hearts still beat is because yours does too! Many thanks in advance and may God bless you, your family, and your pets this magical holiday season.
