crane’s tip
of the month
If you are planning to travel south or west
during the winter months, you need to
understand the grain in the greens. Most of
the golf courses will have Bermuda grass
greens. Your putts will tend to break with
the grain. Grain grows toward the setting
sun. Another way to determine which way
the grain is growing is to look at the cup.
Late in the day, one side of the cup will be
brown with dead grass. This is because
when the cup was cut in the morning, the
roots for this grass were eliminated. Grain
is growing in the direction of the dead side
of the hole. Double your break when the
break is with the grain, play it straight if
you are “fighting” the grain. Obviously putts
with the grain will be fast and putts into
the grain, slow.
MOST IMPROVED
The GHIN System ranks players based on a formula that basically says that it is more
difficult for a low handicap player to improve a large number of strokes than it is for
a higher handicap player. The USGA recommends the following formula: Add 12 to
the player’s index at the start of the season (value A). Add 12 to the player’s index at
the end of the season (value B). Divide value A by value B. Calculate to three decimal
points. This is the improvement factor. The player with the highest improvement
factor is the most improved. For example, a player that begins the year with a 7
handicap and improves to a 6, (1.055) has improved more than a player who starts
with a 33 handicap and improves to a 31 (1.046)
Based on the GHIN Formula, the rankings are as follows:
Handicap indexes are for April 18, 2007 and November 7, 2007 (Minimum 10 Scores)

QUESTION
A player replaces his ball on the green. In
the process of picking up his coin, he causes
his ball to move. What is the penalty?
ANSWER: No penalty. If the ball is
accidentally moved in the process of
placing or replacing a ball, there is no
penalty provided the movement of the ball
is directly attributable to the specific act
of placing or replacing the ball.

A great way to use your pro shop credits.

I am giving my space to Planning Committee Chairman Bob Breakstone to
update us on its progress. Since this was submitted, Duane has conducted
personal interviews with key members of staff and is now in the process of
interviewing several of our members. Please participate if asked.
John Maleno
President of the Board
REPORT TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND MEMBERSHIP
As a result of introduction by members of our Board of Directors John Maleno,
Gordon Seliga and myself met with Duane Clements, President of SRBI
Marketing Insights. SRBI is a full service market research and strategy firm
with expertise in a variety of industry sectors and research disciplines.
AA
Duane has offered his services to Lake View for FREE to establish a vision
guide to direct the club in better understanding our existing membership and market and looking to
define and develop a brand, identity and strategy to carry us into the future.
The Planning committee as a whole has endorsed this project and we will be involving and
keeping the membership informed as we move forward. The Planning Committee does have
concern as to the immediate future of Lake View and we are hoping that by initiating this project
we will be able to offer the Board of Directors some insights and information to assist it the short
term planning as well.
A
As a result of our meeting with Duane we invited him to make a presentation to the Planning
Committee, which was the subject of our October 29th meeting. Duane outlined and explained his
program to the committee including background on himself and SRBI Market Insights, a program
objective of establishing a vision to guide Lake View, goals and why they are important to the
project, research objectives, and mapped out a process to achieve our goals.
