by Don Soul, sectetary
April is our Ring dues night and what a
tum oLd we had to attend the leclure given
byWhit Haydn. Before the lecture, Ring
business included the selection of three
members - Debbie Travers, Roy
Armstrong and Sherri Luft - to be our
nominating e.mmittee for the June election of officers. Craig Stone also made
an announ@ment that Chad Long will be
lecluring in San Diego on May 25h. With
that, our lecture began.
Mr. Haydn's topic featured his experiences as a street performer - a tough
grind. He listed how to attract an audience, what to perform and how to control
the crcn^d and keep your props and pass-
the-hat donations from disappearing.
Stars like Whit, Harry Anderson and others started out as street performers and
now we know what theywent through.
Vvhitthen gave us hiswell-tested lecture
- Fast and Loose - one which was both
informative and entertaining. The name
of the lecture comes from his "endless
chain" routine which can be a street
hustle, part of a close-up routine or per-
formed in trade shows. However, this
demonstration came at lhe conclusion
of the lecture. Haydn started with a clever
ESP bit called "The lmpromptu Card
Code" and it is killer magic. With no previous coaching between performer and
audience assistant, the assistant could
accurately identify cards randomly chosen by Whit! Believe it or not even a blind
assistant can look like a magician using
this code. For his next effec-t he honored
DaiVemon by explaining the psychological struclure of Vemon's Brain Wave presentation. lt is so convincing one would
swear that ESP was worklng-
by Don Soul, secretary
The April 261h board meeting was
held at the home of Don Soul and
attending were Gary Schwarharald,
Tom La Chance, Paul Thomey,
Dick Dale, Julie Dale and Ralph
Mauzy. After a quick review of the
May regular meeting agenda, Gary
asked Dick for a count of Stand-Up
contest participants. Only Don Soul
was on the list so Paulwas urged to
perform, too. Let's hope more chaF
lengers try to capture the award at
the June contest.
After an evaluation of possible lnstallation Banquet performerc, itwas deiermined that Gary would attempt to
secure Bob Sheets asthe headliner.
ln lieu of that, Dick will work on get-
ting either Sylvester the Jester or
Loren C. Michaels, depending upon

availability. The American Legion Hall
still seems to be our banquet facility
with a Hawaiian luau as the menu
provided by Ranch Catering.
Next, it was mentioned that veteran
Ring 76 member Mike Stilwell is
ailing and had just come home from
the hospital. The board decided to
express thelr wish for a speedy recovery to Mike with the involvement
of the members. Therefore, a card
will be circulated at the May regular
meeting.
A rough draft of a Ring 76 Policy
manual (based on the Ring One
manual) to guide future board members was presented to Dick Dale by
Don Soul for editing. The manual
should be completed in time for the
new administration in July. Wth no
further business to discuss, the
meeting was adjourned.

The Chicago Opene( which relies heavily
on multiple lifts, became the Chic€go Surprise as Vvhit embellished the rouine with
his own contributions. As \ivhit puts it,
'This is one ofthe strongest card tricks I
do for laymen.'Just as his other effects,
this is impressive magic. Closing with
Fast and Loose, the chain swindle in
which the performer can never lose (unIess he wants to), he offered to include
with the sale of his lecture notes what
might be called the "ultimate,,working of
