Signed books
Welcome to our first auction of 2012. When
you have been in business for more than
30 years, it is not uncommon to get back
autographs you once sold decades ago. It’s
also often a bittersweet event because collectors collect they don’t sell or consign. In
our March 8 auction we have over 75 autographs that came from two of my favorite
collectors. One collector is gravely ill and
his daughter therefore is entrusting his autographs to my auctions; the other
collector, a very close friend of mine, died
around seven years ago. I had sold most of
his autographs in a series of auctions, but
since his widow is now moving, I just received all of his finest autographs that were
held back. As always I have autographs
in all price ranges and areas of interests.
Among the 171 lots, here are a few lots that

the four-minute mile “barrier” as unbreakable. A neurologist, Bannister wrote papers
on the physiology of exercise, and he is said
to have achieved his speed through scientific training methods. Bannister, arguably
the most famous record-setter in the mile,
is also the man who held the record for the
least amount of time. He is also among the

Bruce. (1926-1966).
American comedian, dubbed “America’s
#1 vomic” by Walter Winchell. Notorious
for his foul mouth and relentless desecration of social and religious icons. At first
glance a cryptic comment written to a first
class flight attendant in the 1960s on 8x10
American Airlines stationery, “Dear Irene.
‘Clark Gable Found Alive in Argentina!
Love, Lenny Bruce.” Includes 5x7 unsigned
photo. When Bruce wrote this note, Clark
Gable had just passed away. A search on
the internet finds a copy of the December,
1960, issue of The Realist, an underground
magazine that promoted “Freethought Criticism and Satire,” with the cover headline
reading, “Clark Gable Is Found Alive In
Argentina.” It is quite possible that Bruce
read this “expose” since this issue included
an article about Bruce: “Lenny Bruce Revisited.” In very good condition. Mailing

to sell it now. In more than 30 years I have
had only one other Casablanca ensemble.
It was sold in Auction 96 on February 20,

seven signatures and lacked the rare signature of Dooley Wilson. It was consigned

Beginning in upper left corner and going
counter clockwise are the following key
cast members:
Humphrey Bogart. (1899-1957). Dis-
tinguished American actor. Bogie won the
best actor Academy Award for The African
Queen (1951) and was
nominated for Casablanca (1942). In Casablanca he played the part of Rick Blaine, a
cynical American expatriate living in Casablanca in December 1941 and the owner of
the upscale nightclub Rick’s Cafe Americain. Off the set, he and Ingrid Bergman
hardly spoke during the filming of Casablanca. She said later, “I kissed him, but I
never knew him.”
Peter Lorre. (1904-1964). AmericanHungarian actor who excelled as insinuating, weasely villains. He came to Hollywood in 1934 after success in
Germany with M, and appeared in Crime
and Punishment, The Maltese Falcon, and
Casablanca, as well as movies featuring the
Japanese detective, Mr. Moto. He died at
59 of a heart attack. In Casablanca Lorre
played the role of Signor Ugarte, a petty
crook, and boasts to Rick of “letters of transit” he obtained through the murder of two
German couriers. Vintage 3.25x4 light blue
album sheet signed and inscribed in ink,
“To Bob. Good Luck. Humphrey Bogart,”
and signed in ink below Bogart’s signature
by Lorre. Extremely rare to see both Lorre
and Bogart signed on the same sheet of paper.
Ingrid Bergman. (1915-1982). Swed-
ish-born actress. Best known by generations of film-lovers for playing opposite
Humphrey Bogart in the classic Casablanca. Winner of three best actress Oscars, for
Gaslight, Anastasia, and Murder on the
Orient Express. In Casablanca she plays
the role of Rick Blaine’s Norwegian exlover.3x5x3 off-white album sheet signed

born actor and director. Became the object
of admiration for many American women
as the prototype of the Continental lover,
aristocratic, elegant, and gallant. His most
memorable film was Casablanca, opposite
Ingrid Bergman. In Casablanca he plays
Victor Laszlo, the husband of Bergman,
and a renowned fugitive Czech Resistance
leader who has escaped from a Nazi concentration camp. 4x5x3.5 light pink album
sheet signed and inscribed in black ink, “To
Bob. Best wishes. Paul Henreid.”
Dan Seymour. (1915-1993). American
character actor who frequently played villains in Warner Bros. films. He appeared in
several Humphrey Bogart films, including
Casablanca, Key Largo, and To Have and
Have Not. In Casablanca he played Abdul
the Arab who guarded the door to Rick’s
casino. 5x3 white card signed in black felt
pen.
Sydney
Greensteet. (1879-1954).
English actor of impeccable diction and
immense stature who mastered the role of
the classic rogue. He made his film debut
at the age of 62, appearing alongside the
two actors with whom he would always
be associated, Humphrey Bogart and Peter
Lorre. He will be forever remembered for
his role as the villain Kasper Gutman (aka
“The Fat Man”) in The Maltese Falcon,
which garnered him an Oscar nomination.
In Casablanca he plays Signor Ferrari, a
major underworld figure and Rick’s friendly business rival. 3x2 vintage album sheet
signed and inscribed in black fountain pen
ink, “To Bob. Sydney Greenstreet.” Lower
right corner matted off.
Dooley Wilson. (1886-1953). African-
American actor and singer. He is best remembered as the piano-player and singer
Sam who sings As Time Goes By at the
request of Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) in
Casablanca. The famously misremembered
line “Play it again, Sam” was never actually spoken in the film. For his role as Sam in
Casablanca, Wilson was paid $350 a week
for seven weeks. Wilson was a singer and
drummer, but not a pianist. Sam’s piano
playing in the film was actually performed
by the only other African-American in the
cast, Elliot Carpenter, who was placed
where Wilson could see and imitate his
hand movements. 5x4 vintage light-green
album sheet signed and inscribed in black
Dooley Wilson. Casablanca, Save Pompey.
‘Bloomer Girl.’” Wilson played Pompey,
an escaped slave, in the Broadway musical Bloomer Girl (1946–1948). Anything
signed by Wilson is extremely rare and this
is the first time I have ever seen Wilson add
“Casablanca” to his name.
Claude Raines. (1889-1967). Ameri-
can actor nominated for Academy Awards
in 1939 for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,
in 1943 for Casablanca, in 1944 for Mr.
Skeffington, and in 1946 for Notorious. In
Casablanca, Raines plays Captain Louis
Renault who is supposed to arrest Rick but
ends up walking with him in the fog as the
movie ends. 3.5x2 sheet of paper signed in
black fountain pen ink.
John Qualen. (1899-1987). Canadian-
American character actor of Norwegian
heritage who specialized in Scandinavian
roles. Appearing in well over one hundred
films, and acting extensively on television
into the 1970s, Qualen performed many of
his roles with various accents, usually Scandinavian, often intended for comic effect.
As Berger, the jewelry-selling Norwegian
Resistance member in Casablanca, he had
a light Scandinavian accent. 3.5x2 sheet of
paper signed in black fountain pen ink.
Conrad Veidt. (1893-1943). German-
born actor. One of the great stars of early
German cinema. He became a British citizen to escape the Nazis and ended his career
playing one of the bad guys in Casablanca.
In Casablanca, Veidt plays Major Heinrich
Strasser, a Nazi who tries to capture Laszlo
but is shot by Rick. Vintage 3.5x6 postcard
photo signed in blue fountain pen ink.
S. K. Sakall. (1884-1955). Character
comedian of Central European stage and
screen (as Szöke Szakall) and from 1940,
Hollywood films. He became one of the
American screen’s most beloved supporting players, appearing mainly in musicals
as a bewildered impresario. 3x2 sheet of
lined paper signed in black ink, “Cuddles
Sakall.”
Leonid Kinskey. (1903-1998). Rus-
sian-born movie and television actor who
enjoyed a long career. Kinskey is best
known for his role as Sascha the Russian
bartender in Casablanca. It is said that he
got perhaps his best-known role because

85. Marilyn Monroe. (1926-1962).
American icon. Possibly the most legendary woman of the 20th century, Monroe’s
magnetic appeal reaches beyond the grave
to enchant successive generations. Her
combination of wild sexuality and innocent
charm is best portrayed in the films Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch
and Some Like It Hot*. Her mysterious
death, by an either deliberate or accidental overdose of sedatives, and her alleged
affairs with John and Robert Kennedy, ensured her status as a legend. Marilyn, along
with Elvis, is the most recognizable human
symbol of America throughout the world.
4x1.5 lined paper signed in blue ballpoint
pen ink. Provenance: One of my longtime
consignors provides an explanation on how
this autograph was obtained: “My flight
attendant friend worked for American Airlines from 1959 to 1962, serving first class.
She obtained a number of autographs from
passengers, but the Monroe was perhaps the
most unusual. It was at the old Idlewild Airport [Now JFK]. It was before her flight; she
saw Monroe entering a stall and positioned
herself just outside when Monroe made her
exit she feigned shock and surprise, but
was not flustered enough NOT to ask for an
autograph. Marilyn, somewhat reluctantly,
signed at the sink. Later it turned out that
MM was on her flight, with Arthur Miller.
She pointed at Irene who tried to stay away
from the couple and did not ask Miller, who
looked very stern, for an autograph.” In

the second “M.” This signature would look
