Thank you for joining and we hope you found the material in the new member packet you were mailed to be helpful and that you will be an active participant and volunteer in your organization. The Huntsville Track Club, Inc., founded in 1971, is a non-profit, tax exempt [IRS Code 501(c)(3)], all-volunteer, family oriented, membership organization. Note: 94 is the largest increase ever in membership in a 2 month period. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Please either mail, phone, or email us your CHANGE OF ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER when you move. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Current Membership: As of March 10 the club has 1554 members in 814 households. That is 379 general members, 37 subscriber members, 39 supporter members, 8 honorary members, 351 head-ofhousehold members (family memberships) HTC NEWS 214 - 12 and 740 dependent members. Note: 1554 is an all-time high for HTC membership. Address Change: Please remember that most HTC mail is via a non-profit thirdclass permit that is not forwarded to you. That means that those who have moved and did not inform us of your new address have not been getting your track club mail. The post office now requires us to include on all mailing pieces “RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED”. That means any mail that is not deliverable is returned to us at a cost of first class postage whether or not the post office provides us a corrected address. Please notify us when you have a change of address. Our address, phone number, and email address are in a number of places in the newsletter. MEMBER EMAIL ADDRESS STATUS As of March 10 we have email addresses for 785 of our 814 households for 96.4%. These email addresses are used for club purposes only. Email Address Changes: Each time we email to HTC members a large number of emails are returned. When those fail the second time we delete the email addresses that do not deliver as being invalid because you have changed your provider and did not notify us. If you have not been receiving emails from the club, we do not have your email address in the database, so please email your email address to [email protected]. Please put this email address in you address book so you can notify us when your email address changes. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ If you have not sent us your email address, or if it CHANGES, please send it to [email protected]. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ HTC Email Policy: All official Huntsville Track Club email messages sent from the HTC database will be sent by me from email address: [email protected]. This is being done for administrative reasons because we maintain the HTC database and to provide database security. We will give individual email addresses to other club members when there is a valid reason for them to contact you. This is the same policy we use with phone numbers and postal addresses. Since the fund began December, 1984 HTC members have donated a total of $112,879 to the Fund. ROCKET CITY MARATHON DONATIONS On January 31, 2014 the HTC Board approved donating $1,500 to each of the following three charities from the proceeds of the 2013 Rocket City Marathon. • National Children's Advocacy Center • Habitat for Humanity • Land Trust of North Alabama UAH SPRING 10K ROAD RACE The 2014 UAH Spring Road Race 10K was held March 2nd at the University Fitness Center (UFC) on the campus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The Huntsville Track Club (HTC), in cooperation with UAH and the UFC, hosted the event in remembrance of Earl Jacoby, a HTC NEWS 214 - 13 long-time Track Club member and volunteer and a dedicated UAH Athletics supporter. The weather for this year’s event was good with warm temperatures and some wind. For the sixth consecutive year, the race will be making a contribution to the Huntsville Dialysis Center (HDC) in honor of Earl Jacoby. The race had 326 entrants with 244 finishers. Congratulations to all of this year’s participants and finishers, especially my son Connor who completed his first 10k … way to go Connor! BE CAREFUL OUT THERE RUNNING The January 29, The Huntsville Times reported on the armed robbery of a jogger on Hughes Road in Madison last December 11. The Decatur man was apprehended and booked into Madison County Jail with an $80,000 bond. He was also charged with burglary and theft of another Madison resident that occurred earlier in December. UPDATE ON MIKE & BETTY DOOLEY [Editor’s Note: In the July/August, 2011 issue we included an update on the Dooleys. For the members who knew the Dooleys, below is a picture I received in mid January. For those members who didn’t know Mike and Betty Dooley, they are long time HTC members who participated in most HTC races and were also regular volunteers with many friends in the area. They joined the HTC in 1981 when they returned to North Alabama from three years in Cape Canaveral; both were engineers. From 1981 to 2006, they were a regular on the local running circuit, running at least twenty races a year from one mile to the marathon. Betty won the Running Journal Grand Prix one year, winning her age group in the thirteen races she ran. She won the HTC Grand Prix two times (1987 & 1989). She still holds 29 Alabama age records from 1 mile to the half-marathon, and at one time was second among Alabama female runners with the most age records. HTC NEWS 214 - 14 In 2006 on Cotton Row weekend Betty suffered a stroke. Two years later they moved to Texas to be closer to one of their sons.] LETTER FROM A SUPER VOLUNTEER Hello Harold and Louise: You are two of the greatest volunteers I have ever run across. You have donated all of your adult life to the HTC. I have finally come to a conclusion and that is to leave the HTC. I started running in 1968. I joined the HTC at the May meeting of 1976. A very good move. Onis and I took vacation from work to work in the high school invitational track meets more than once. I worked with the city marking the CRR and marathon course for 7 years. This included the finish line for CRR about 2 am on a Sunday morning. Not much traffic. Also, we were in charge of making arrangements for the use of the parking garage. Also the clean up. Our main problem came when the marathon course made changes. It was practically impossible to black out the old arrows. Remember the finish line for the marathon? That should make the books. I bought a motor scooter to be used for marking the courses. I also bought a Honda Goldwing motorcycle to be used for out of town races (and other uses). Some of the finest people on earth are runners and their families. I enjoyed every minute of it. Now the real reason that I am quitting. About 2003 or 2004 I had back surgery. I couldn’t run any more. I continued to walk on my treadmill and do stretching exercises. I still do today. On July 9th 2010 I blacked out at Wal Mart in Fayetteville. This was after 57 days and nights of extreme jaw pain. I had all tests by our family doctor, nurses, chiropractors, and what have you. My doctor of about 30 years diagnosed it as whiplash. Then came Wal Mart. I was transported to the Fayetteville hospital. An ambulance was called from Huntsville and to Huntsville Hospital I went. On July 14th I had 3 bypasses, two days later I had a stroke and 30 days later they went into my heart and plugged a hole. I have about recovered 100%. I still have a slight balance problem. I could not understand why after 34 years of running this would happen to me. The doctor said it was heredity on my part. He also said had I not been a runner I would have been dead probably 20 years before. I say MOST RUNNERS LIVE LONGER LIKE MONEY IN THE BANK. Another good reason for leaving, I will be 84 years young in April. Thank everyone for putting up with us all those years. (After thought: Because most people haven’t seen us is after retiring from AT&T I started working for the veterans as a service officer in Lincoln county for 10 and one half years.) Next to our Church I would consider the HTC the best organization I have dealt with. May the HTC prosper forever. Paul and Onis Goode [Editor’s Note: The picture was taken at the post Marathon Committee Dinner Meeting following our retirement as marathon directors in 1996. Paul didn’t begin to tell all the volunteer functions he was involved in with the HTC. Onis advertised in the HTC NEWS for many years until the post office got picky about what type advertising was allowed for the club’s non-profit mailing permit – she sold insurance of all types. HTC NEWS 214 - 15 The thing they did that I received the most feedback letters (yes, before email, and we received a lot more letters back then than we do emails now) was their split timing at the halfway point of the marathon. Onis would sight each runner’s number and look up their name from the competitor listing and Paul would call their name, give them their split time, then double it and tell them what their finish time would be at that pace. The 1996 Marathon Committee of 30 major task leaders, with 17 being husband/ wife teams, had been intact for many years and was truly like family to us. All attended the meeting and we have a group picture plus the 30 individual pictures like the above that is very special for us. One more note; about the motor scooter: The original course marker was Pete Sulyma, the original HTC ultra marathon runner I wrote about in the last issue, ran the course directing were the markers were to be placed as they were being painted by the city employees. When Paul took over, being quite a bit older than Pete, he used a bicycle the first year. That being somewhat inconvenient is why he bought the motor scooter. I think you can say both exhibited tremendous dedication, but in different ways. And there are a lot of really interesting stories about the attempts to get rid of the old arrows Paul mentioned in his letter. If you can think of one, I’m sure we’ve tried it.] COMMENT CONCERNING RACE FEES I received the following in response to the email sent to HTC members providing information about the four HTC races that are free to club members. This is not the first such comment published in the newsletter and stated to me as a Board member. “That is really good to hear. It bothers me that race entry fees have risen as they have. It is not a problem for me, but there are lots of young people out there who are struggling just to put food on the table for their families.” Mac McCrady KIDNEY CANCER REDUCED BY RUNNING The article “Fewer Runners Get Kidney Cancer” by Scott Douglas and published in a Runner's World Newswire, noted that there is a 76% lower incidence of kidney cancer among those running more than 15 miles per week. That is according to research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. More than 75,000 runners and more than 15,000 walkers were surveyed and they were followed for between five and seven years, according to the RWN article. NANCY CLARK ON ENERGY DRINKS Nutritionist Nancy Clark in an article in New England Runner wrote the following in answer to “Energy drinks contain magical ingredients, such as taurine”. “The magical ingredients in energy drinks are caffeine and sugar. Although taurine has been reported to enhance performance, the limited research was done on rats. Newer research suggests taurine offers no ergogenic benefits. To save money, simply add a heaping tablespoon of sugar to your coffee. You’ll get the same boost. Better yet, eat wisely and sleep more, you won’t need an energy drink.” TOP 12 RUNNING / WALKING TIPS 1. Make exercise a priority; you deserve to feel good. 2. Ten minutes a day is better than no minutes a day. 3. Record your progress; it’s motivating and keeps you honest. 4. Running and walking three times a week, for 30 minutes or more, reduces risk of breast cancer and heart attack by half and diabetes by two thirds. It also reduces risk of depression, osteoporosis and premature death. 5. Drink water all day; it’s hardly ever enough. 6. When buying shoes, pay attention to fit, not hype or price. 7. Find a fitness partner; it’s motivating and fun! 8. Diets don’t work, regular exercise does. Running and walking burn about 100 calories a mile – one of the most effective means of safe weight loss. 9. Leave your headphones at home or in the gym; it’s safer. 10. Missed a workout? Don’t feel guilty, just start again. 11. Move enough to puff a little bit and work up a light sweat. 12. Have a goal; it keeps you going and focused. From The Magnolia Runner Mississippi Track Club Newsletter HTC NEWS 214 - 16 DID YOU KNOW? “Walking is the best exercise for man.” – Hippocrates 400 B.C. “Walking 2 miles in 35 minutes 3 days a week will cut your incidence of heart attack by 55%” – Dr. Kenneth Cooper 1987 Walking 3 miles a day, 5 days a week will cut your incidence of diabetes by 66% and breast cancer by 66%. It takes 20 minutes of non-stop aerobic exercise to START burning fat. The minimum mount of exercise necessary for a healthy lifestyle is 30 minutes of non-stop aerobic exercise 3 days a week. We were designed to be hunters and gatherers. We’ve become sitters and clickers. As a result, we have the nation’s worst obesity rate. From The Magnolia Runner Mississippi Track Club Newsletter IMPORTANCE OF HIP STRENGTH Running long distances can put a lot of stress on the lower body, especially the knees and the lower legs. A few of the most common running injuries are plantar fasciitis, shin splints, runner’s knee, and iliotibial band syndrome. When these injuries occur, runners look for answers. Often they look at a new pair of shoes with promises of improved foot mechanics, which is supposed to help their condition. Another popular treatment option is orthotics for your running shoes to correct foot pronation. Sometimes these approaches are successful. Often, however, the same injury tends to return in a few months. Sometimes an injured runner’s focus on the lower legs and feet is misplaced. A study done at the University of Calgary by Dr. Reed Ferber offers hope to runners that are getting tired of chronic knee and lower leg injuries. The study’s findings suggest that the root cause of most running injuries in the knees and lower legs is weak hip muscles. The researchers found that 89 percent of the patients studied had reduced pain within 4 to 6 weeks by following a program to improve hip strength. This makes sense because runners need hip strength to stabilize their legs each time they hit the ground, which puts extra strain on the knees and lower leg muscles. This is not to say that strong hip muscles are a cure all, but it wouldn’t hurt to try strengthening the hips. There are 5 simple hip strengthening exercises that can be preformed with a band at home or a cable machine at the gym. The exercises are hip adduction, hip abduction, hip flexion, hip extension, and hip crossover. Check out coreperformace.com for easy-to-follow videos and instructions of these exercises. Philip Ivanov, D.C. From The Magnolia Runner Mississippi Track Club Newsletter TARSAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) is a condition caused by abnormal pressure on a nerve in the foot. The nerve that gets entrapped is the tibial nerve. This nerve goes underneath the medial malleolus, which is a bump on the inside of the ankle. A band of fibrous tissue called the flexor retinaculum forms the tunnel that the tibial nerve and several tendons from the deep calf muscles go through. This tunnel is called the tarsal tunnel. Causes 1. Over pronation (feet rolling in) 2. Osteoarthritis from an old injury 3. Anything that can take up space in the tarsal tunnel (tumor, swelling, etc.) 4. Tenosynovitis Symptoms The pain is most commonly described as burning and tingling in the bottom of the foot. The pain is made worse with activity like walking and running. Symptoms usually improve with rest. If the condition worsens the foot may become numb and weak. Treatment Initially treatment should consist of rest and ice. If the cause of your condition is over pronation of the feet, then orthotics may be warranted. Orthotics are inserts that can be worn inside the shoe that support the arch and take pressure off the tibial nerve. Active Release Technique (ART) has specific protocols that can be used to free up the nerve in the tibial tunnel. Kinesiology taping can be used to decrease pain and swelling in the area. If these conservative treatments fail, surgical intervention may be the next step. Philip Ivanov, D.C. HTC NEWS 214 - 17 From The Magnolia Runner Mississippi Track Club DOES COFFEE CAUSE DEHYDRATION? A mid January article by Amby Burfoot on Runner's World Newwire was titled “Moderate Caffeine Intake Doesn't Lead to Dehydration”. “A British team recently researched the does-coffee-cause-dehydration question in what it says is the first such investigation of regular coffee drinkers. Conclusion, in a word: no.” This was not a study on people who exercise. Drinking alcohol during the study was prohibited, but otherwise food and drink intake was normal. “The researchers wanted to determine the effects of coffeedrinking on everyday folks.” The American College of Sports Medicine said in a 2005 determination: "Caffeine ingestion has a modest diuretic effect in some individuals but does not affect water replacement in habitual caffeine users, so caffeinated beverages can be ingested during the day by athletes who are not caffeine naive." The analysis was that going to the bathroom after drinking coffee is simply eliminating the fluid intake because coffee is primarily water. Yes, coffee is a diuretic but only for its own fluid content. So it doesn’t dehydrate you, but neither does it hydrate you. Their suggestion following exercise: “Rehydrate with non-caffeinated beverages first so that, in the short term, your fluid levels return to normal more quickly.” Energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine and thus should not be used to rehydrate following exercise. KEY TO SUCCESS: MOTIVATION [Editor’s Note: As detailed in the two part article, “Motivation and Athletic Performance” (issues #199 and #201), motivation is the result of a variety of human virtues. Stressed in that article was that motivation is just as important in everyday life as is in athletics to be successful. Thus participation and success in athletics is important training for a successful life. Author Harvey Mackay attended the Beijing Olympics and was impressed with the high level of qualities possessed by the athletes. The following are excerpts from his post Olympic arti- cle; “Keys to success for Olympians can apply to all” was published in The Huntsville Times, September 21, 2008. The title of his article and in its contents also notes that relationship; after all his articles are business motivation related. Some of the excerpts have been edited for brevity.] Heart trumps just about all the other senses when it comes to accomplishing the new and unknown. There’s no denying the heart of a champion. An athlete can have the perfect body for a competition or the best coach, but if they don’t have a deep down burning desire to achieve something, they won’t accomplish it. Sometimes desire is more important than talent. Determination can turn the ordinary into extraordinary. Dedication is training for months, even years for just seconds or minutes for a successful competition. There are no shortcuts in the world of sports and life. Athletes must stay focused on the goals above all else. Truly dedicated individuals won’t let anything interfere with attaining their goals. That’s why so few people become champions. It takes a lot of sweat, sacrifice and discipline to become an Olympic champion. If it were easy to become the best, everyone would do it. No one can do it for them. Perfect preparation makes perfect. Athletes have to believe they can win….that they have done everything in their power to compete at the highest level. There can be no fear of failure. Confidence enables them to perform to the absolute best of their abilities. I love to watch and study athletes as they are getting ready to compete. You can see them running through their races or routines in their heads. Nothing distracts them because they exert total concentration and focus. The breakfast of champions is not cereal, it’s competition. It’s healthy. It keeps athletes sharp, makes them better and improves quality. Athletes should not only welcome stiff competition, they should actively seek it. They’ll never realize their full potential in business or sports unless they’re challenged. There are many things that can go wrong in life, so athletes must be mentally prepared for whatever happens. Sometimes HTC NEWS 214 - 18 they have to perform at their best when they’re feeling their worst. Champions block out the pain and do what’s necessary to win or get the job done. They exert mental toughness. I learned long ago that projecting oneself into a successful situation is the most powerful means there is of attaining personal goals. Vision doesn’t do the planning, and it doesn’t anticipate the obstacles. It gives a real idea of what is possible, if only they want it badly enough. Life is not always fair. Sometimes things happen that are out of one’s control. Judging can be uneven, conditions may not be perfect and equipment can fail. Champions know how to deal with it. Don’t let age be a deterrent. THE FATHER OF DISTANCE RUNNING Browning "Brownie" Ross set in motion the sport of distance running as we know it and all enjoy today. “Ross devoted his life to spreading his love and enthusiasm for long distance running and is often credited as the cornerstone to the development of long distance runners in the U.S. today.” His senior year in high school he was crowned the N.J. State Mile Champion and National Interscholastic Indoor Mile Champion. Following high school he joined the Navy and fought in World War II. After the war he became a standout track athlete at Villanova. After graduation he won many awards including winning 8 National AAU Cross Country Championships. He competed in the 1948 London Olympics where he became the only American to compete in the steeplechase final, placing 7th. At the 1951 Pan American Games, Ross placed 1st in the 1500 meter run, shared 1st in the 3000 meter steeplechase, and finished 4th in the 5000 meter run. Roger Bannister’s classic autobiography “The Four Minute Mile” includes mention of a race in London that Ross ran against Bannister. Ross was a teacher and coach and it has been stated that in his later years he organized about two dozen races each year where he lived in Woodbury, NJ. He continued to run three miles a day until his death in 1998. In 1955 Ross recognized the need for distance running results to be published and widely distributed in order to increase the public's awareness of the sport. Shortly thereafter he created the Long Distance Log, the only publication at that time devoted exclusively to long distance running in the USA. In an editorial Ross proposed American distance runners form a national organization that became a reality in 1958. Over the next 20 years he edited, published and mailed the Log to subscribers throughout the country that increased to about 1,000 subscribers when it was discontinued in 1975 in favor of the RRCA publication Footnotes. In 1957 he formed the Philadelphia Road Runners Club. In April 1958 the New York Road Runners Club with 29 members was formed and held their first race in February, 1959. About the same time several other road runner clubs were formed around the country in opposition to the AAU’s restrictions on open road races, lack of providing road races for the running public, and restrictions on women, masters and children competing in races. History of the RRCA in the RRCA Handbook noted, “…with the exception of the New England area, there were very few distance races in the U.S.” On February 22, 1958 Ross and nine other long distance runners held a meeting in the Paramount Hotel in New York where they founded the Road Runners Club of America. Ross served as the first RRCA President. Ross was one of the original inductees of the RRCA Hall of Fame. Something that I am most proud of is that in 1988 Ross, the founder of the RRCA and who I consider to be the most influential person in the sport, suggested to Jim Oaks, who was a member of the RRCA HOF Nominating Committee, write the nomination for my induction to the HOF. Something that most of you probably don’t know is that Jim Oaks has served on the RRCA Hall of Fame Selection Committee for 32 years starting in 1983 to the present. He has served as the committee chairman two times, 1991 HTC NEWS 214 - 19 through 1993 and again 1997 through 2010. I don’t know all of the members who have served on the committee, but of those I do know 15 are in the HOF. The Browning Ross Spirit of the RRCA Award is named in honor of Ross which two HTC members have won. In 1996 Jack Heath interviewed Browning Ross which was published in the American Runner that year. The title of that article was: “Browning Ross: The Father of U.S. Distance Running”. The article was reprinted in Runner’s Gazette in December, 2006 where I obtained some of the information for this article. In the article running author Tom Osler is quoted as stating: “Ross is to running what George Washington is this country”. Information here also came from the HOF section of the RRCA website, other websites and from various publication sources including the RRCA Handbook, history chapter. The following are several Ross quotes from the interview that gives some background of what the sport was like in the 1950s and his views of the sport. In that day the AAU was the governing body for the sport. Later it was TAC and currently it is the USATF. To the question: “You were threatened with expulsion by the AAU for helping women run in the 1950s. Can you explain?” “Susan Morse, an Olney High School runner, asked me if she could run in a marathon in Philadelphia. Since I was the Middle Atlantic AAU Long Distance Chairman, I approved. She ran well and finished but the AAU promptly barred her for life. Thus we organized the Road Runners Club of America and started to stage our own races.” To another question about his current view of the sport Ross stated: “Colleges should strive to bring back dual meets instead of big meets every weekend. This would encourage rivalries and also take up less time. I just finished two days of officiating at the Big East meet at Villanova and even I was bored. People do not want to spend eight hours at a track meet.” Later in that answer Ross noted that more opportunities should be given to non-scholarship athletes to compete after graduation from high school. And this: “High Schools should drop the metric distances for run- ning events. People are more familiar with, and interested in, the mile and two mile rather than the 1600 and 3200 meters. Why have running distances in meters and field events in feet if you are trying to encourage interest in the sport?” Boy!, do I agree and so do many others because there is now an organization Bring Back the Mile (www.bringbackthemile.com). To the question: “What is your definition of a successful runner?” “A person who sets goals but fits the training in with the rest of his/her life. It should not consume you. It’s not fair to your family, which should come first.” SOME THOUGHTS TO LIVE BY “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” “Winning takes talent; to repeat takes character.” “If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?” “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” “Success is never final; failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.” “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” “Never make excuses. Your friends don’t need them and your foes won’t believe them.” “Happiness begins where selfishness ends.” “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.” “It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” “Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.” Coach John Wooden ROAD RACES ARE NOT IN AN ARENA Unlike most sports road races are not held in an arena, stadium or other sports facility. For the most part they are run on public roads and thus have an impact on the general public. In a previous newsletter article I expressed my concern that we may be wearing out our welcome as a result of the inconvenience imposed on the general public that has no interest in our sport, and HTC NEWS 214 - 20 governments which must authorize the use of public roads and to some extent the use of funding from taxes paid by the public. That was expressed in the Runner's World Newswire article “Some Smaller Marathons Suffering Despite Boom”, by Scott Douglas. The article noted that “Some get shorter or canceled; others saved by ad hoc groups.” The article began as follows: “This year's New York City and Chicago marathons were the biggest in the races' history; with 50,266 finishers, New York City was the largest in history. When the year-end totals are available, it's highly likely that 2013 will set a U.S. record for number of marathon finishers. But as recent news reminds, there's a concurrent counter story, with some smaller marathons struggling to stay on the calendar.” The article noted that, “the Joplin, Missouri city council dropped its support for the Mother Road Marathon” and “the Rockfest Marathon, held in Hampton, New Hampshire in October, announced that it will be only a half marathon in 2014”. The Rockfest Marathon had a combined 5,000 runners in the half marathon and marathon in 2013. The Joplin City “council thought the municipal funds devoted to the race weren't merited given the event's declining numbers.” The multi event races went from 1,657 participants the previous year to 572 this year with only 176 of those being in the marathon. "Issues concerning long delays to area residents on the roads of Hampton have prompted us to limit the event to the half marathon distance only," race organizers said. It further stated, “town residents have complained that the race is too much of a disruption to normal traffic patterns on larger roads.” The article also noted that marathons in Columbia, South Carolina and Eau Claire, Wisconsin were also cancelled. And conclude with the following: “As we've reported throughout 2013, many towns are pushing back against the ever-expanding road race calendar. Because they require more road closures and last for so long, marathons are especially subject to cost/benefit analysis from local officials.” Another Runner's World Newswire arti- cle published in November was titled, “St. Paul, MN May put Cap on Number of Road Races”, with the sub-title, “Noise, street closings, and parking tickets are among complaints”. “The economic benefits and charitable tie-ins may be plusses, but the inconvenience and noise and disruption, especially from road closings and even limitations on residents’ access to their own driveways, are beginning to weigh heavily on some psyches in St. Paul.” One council member stated, "It's just too easy now for people to come out with their own event every year. It seems like every year there's more and more." A city resident stated, "The events and celebratory atmosphere are a benefit ... but it comes at a great cost to the neighbors. My hope is that the city and event planners seriously work to find reasonable solutions to neighbors' frustrations.” Another frustration was, “With the music and announcers that accompany road races, noise complaints are growing in St. Paul, too.” One of the major concerns in St. Paul is that too many races were using the same courses and becoming an inconvenience to the same residents too often. A December article by Jon Chesto, Managing Editor, Boston Business Journal discussed the problems with two races in the area. One was the Rockfest Marathon noted in the first RW article above and the other was the cancellation of the Quincy half marathon. Participation was not the problem, “The main reason: traffic complaints from people who live along the routes.” Maybe organizations that put on races should make their own value analysis before governments have to do so as a result of public pressure. When government has to do it under public pressure the outcome may not be to the benefit of the races. The resulting impact on the sport might just be much less if organizations and race directors themselves take actions to solve or minimize the public inconvenience and cost problems. That has always been a concern for the HTC. Club races are spread around town from Mooresville, to UAH, to Alabama A&M, to Monte Sano, to south Huntsville; and a number of club races are held on trails with the Summer Fun Runs held at HTC NEWS 214 - 21 the Running Park. However many non-club races that have sprung up over the years seem to be concentrated downtown or in areas where HTC races have been held for years. The HTC has been around for more than 40 years so residents (also a lot of race participants) assume all races are HTC races, thus the club usually gets the complaints. The issue of parade permits has been before the city council several times in the past. Let’s not go there again. BEWARE OF WHAT YOU SIGN UP FOR The article, “Free Half Marathon That Wasn’t” by Matt McCue in a Runner’s World Newswire is about a lady in Oklahoma who signed up for the Free Half Marathon in Glendale, Arizona that was never held. To sign up required a $50 deposit which supposedly would be returned when picking up her race number at the race expo. The race was to be put on by the event company Heavenly Racing out of Las Vegas, Nevada. The article also reported on a husband and wife who signed up for another such event requiring a $50 deposit that would be returned when crossing the finish line. IO Events company out of Arizona advertised the Really Big Free Marathon which was actually a half marathon to be held in Henderson, Nevada. Neither race was held and in both cases information on their websites was not forthcoming nor did they reply to repeated emails. The lady did finally get her $50 back after the race director had been interviewed by Runner’s World. IO Events went bankrupt and that couple is still waiting for their refund. In both cases the race directors seemed to have good intentions from the information given in the RWN article. However they were not able to get permits to hold the races and could not secure the sponsorship that was to pay for the events. However, there was no excuse for not corresponding with the participants of what the problem was and not promptly providing the refund of the $50 deposit. Considering travel and other expenses such a situation can result in significant aggravation and financial loss. Recently there was a really long article in Outside Magazine titled “The Shadiest Man in the Racing Biz” written by Gordy Megroz. It was about Dean Reinke and his for-profit road race company USRA Half Marathon. Reinke has been around since before I was president of the RRCA in 1983-86. My involvement with Reinke was back in the 1980s. I didn't have any problems with him as I had learned about him from past RRCA presidents and others involved with the RRCA. When he was a Rep for Brooks I had him as a clinic speaker for the marathon and he did a good job and for me the price was right. On the outside he really is a charming and knowledgeable guy and that is how he takes advantage of charities wanting to raise money. Now with the internet he sucks in race participants that don't know they may be paying for a race that will or will not exist. What the article states about him are nothing new, he just has more opportunity now through online registration to take advantage of people that don’t know about him. Racing scams have become almost commonplace by for-profit companies now that there is money to be made in races. Beware if it isn’t an established race put on by a reputable event company or running club, one that is an RRCA member club that will be reputable and be insured through the RRCA. See the article “RRCA’s Buyers Beware Tips when Registering for Events” in the September/October issue #211 on page 29 of the HTC NEWS. FITNESS INCREASES PAIN TOLERANCE As runners we have come to know there are many values resulting from getting fit. Another that you may not have realized was reported on by Scott Douglas in the Runner's World Newwire article, “Getting Fit Increases Pain Tolerance”. Researchers in Australia tested the pain threshold and pain tolerance of a group of non-athletes. Then they put half of them through an exercise program and tested them again. While their pain threshold did not change their pain tolerance increased by 20%. Without getting into the details here, what they found out is that it only required a relatively moderate exercise program and that it suggests a new psychological adaptation to training. "Exercise training may facilitate the development of brain function that increases tolerance of HTC NEWS 214 - 22 these signals and associated sensations, and this increase in tolerance may contribute to improved endurance performance." Not a bad value to have, especially when you get older. MARY CAIN STILL BREAKING RECORDS Mary Cain, now age 17 and competing as a professional, has continued her record breaking performances this year on the indoor circuit. In the Boston Unlimited Open on January 16 in Allston, MA she ran a new World Junior Indoor Record in winning the 1000 meters in 2:39.25, but that record didn’t last long. On February 9, on a 200 meter banked track, she won another 1000 meter race in 2:35.80, again lowering her WJR by more than 3 seconds. In that New Balance Grand Prix race held in Roxbury Crossing, MA, all of the top 10 finishers ran personal best records, so she had to really work for that win. And she came really close to the American Women’s Open record of 2:34:19 held by Jen Toomey set in 2004. In the January 24-25 Terrier Classic in Boston, held on a 200 banked track, she won the Mile in 4:24.11 setting an American Junior Record and just missed tying the World Indoor Junior Record by 0.01 second. The old AJR was 4:28.25 which she had set last year as a 16 year old. Her 1500 meter time was 4:06.63 also breaking her old indoor AJR of 4:11.72. Finishing second and third in personal records were Abbey D’Agostino (4:28.31) and Jordan Hasay (4:28.37), two of last year’s top collegiate distance runners. D’Agostino’s 1500 meter time was 4:09.77 breaking the collegiate record of 4:10.20. The American Indoor Record Cain is chasing is 4:20.5 set by Mary Slaney in 1982 – that’s the American Women’s Record, not American Junior Record. At the Washington Invitational, high school runner Alexa Ephraimson from Camas, WA (reference last HTC NEWS issue) ran 9:00.16 for 6th in a 3000 meter race against a mix of professional and college girls. Ephraimson’s time set a new indoor American Junior Record, American Youth Record, and High School Record. The previous record of 9:02.10 was set last year by Mary Cain. Her time was also better than the outdoor 3000 meter records. The following concluded the announcement of Ephraimson’s record performance: “She will face Mary Cain in the Wanamaker Mile at Millrose on Feb. 15th for one of the biggest showdowns in years.” What the American middle distance runners are doing at the World level is simply outstanding. Another of Cain’s American Junior Records fell at the World Outdoor Championships last year. At that meet it was the first time ever that three American’s reached the 800 meter finals with Brenda Martinez getting the bronze metal with a 1:57.91 PR. This is what Track & Field News wrote about Ajee’ Wilson in that race: “The 19-year-old Wilson came in 6th but her 1:58:21 slashed the American Junior Record from the 1:59:51 run at the Pre Classic by young sensation Mary Cain.” Note that Cain was just 17 when she set the record last summer. The Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games has been considered the top indoor mile race on the indoor circuit for many years. I had the good fortune to attend the meet in Madison Square Gardens back in the mid 1960s when my job at Westinghouse sent me to Long Island, NY for 11 months to teach a course on a General Mills computer to be used in NASA tracking stations in Rosman, NC, Quito, Ecuador and Santiago, Chile. Yes, really, the company that makes the breakfast cereal Cheerios, and that’s a long, but interesting story. Back then the Millrose Games was primarily a male meet. Cain and Ephraimson did meet in the Wanamaker Mile facing 10 professional runners. The mile started out as a slow technical race at about a 4:40 mile pace, so it would not be another record, but it did end really fast – there’s that kick again. Shortly after the half mile Cain and her Salazar coached Oregon Project teammate Treniere Moser had had enough of the slow pace and moved to the front picking up the pace and the runners began to string out behind. With about a quarter mile to go Cain went into her kick and the race was over as she ran the last 400 in approximately 60 seconds. Her 4:27.73 was good enough to be the 2nd fastest American Junior time. Treniere Moser finished second in a PR 4:28.86. In all 5 of the 12 runners ran PRs with one of those being HTC NEWS 214 - 23 Efraimson finishing in 6th with a 4:32.15 to become the 2nd fastest High School female mile runner. The race was held on Cain’s home track where she trains, so the crowd went wild that last 400. At the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 21–23, Cain was again a winner in 4:07.05 in the 1500 meters with a margin of almost 3 seconds over her training partner Treniere Moser 4:09.93 and they were another 3 plus seconds ahead of third place. According to Track & Filed News the race was the fastest time ever at an altitude site. Not a record but it was the 2nd fastest American Junior indoor time and seven of the 15 finishers ran PR’s. In my nearly 60 years of following track and field this potential, level of performance and excitement doesn’t come around very often, be it male or female. A female running a 1:59:51 800 meters and a 4:24.11 mile is World Class regardless of age and competing in World Championships at age 17 is remarkable. As my old college teammate and elite athlete in his day, John Dunkelberg put it: “Mary Cain is the real deal.” A CAUTION FOR VITAMINS C AND E The article “Vitamins C and E May Lessen Fitness Gains From Workouts” by Amby Burfoot in the February 13, 2014, Runner's World Newswire stated “Supplements can cause increased oxidative stress, reduced cell signaling”. “A new human study published in the Journal of Physiology suggests that runners should think twice about taking two popular supplements, vitamins C and E.” Fifty-four subjects were exercised over 11 weeks while taking 1000 milligrams of vitamin C and 235 milligrams of vitamin E, or placebo pills, daily. All the subjects experienced improvement by similar amounts in VO2 max and included the following note. “It is intriguing to note that the four participants with the largest improvements in running performance were all in the placebo group.” However, before-and-after biopsies of the subjects’ quadriceps muscles showed that the supplements interfered with exercise-induced cell-signaling in cell muscle fibers and the muscle tissue of the supplemented runners showed signs of increased oxidative stress. “Thus, supplementation with high dosages of vitamin C and E appears to diminish some of the endurance training-induced adaptations in human skeletal muscle.” The study authors noted that, “The results are a bit confusing.” and provided the following conclusion. “Vitamin C and vitamin E hampered cellular adaptations in the exercised muscle, and we advocate caution when considering antioxidant supplementation combined with endurance exercise.” LA TO HOST 2016 MARATHON TRIALS USA Track & Field has announced that Los Angeles will host the Women’s and Men’s 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Team Selection Trials. Both Houston and Los Angeles bid to host the 2016 Trials on a multiple-loop criterium course with separate starts for men and women, which were used in Houston, who by all accounts had hosted a very successful 2012 Trials. The Trials will be held February 13, 2016 and the LA Marathon will be the following day. A major controversy preceded the final selection. As had always been done in the past the Men’s and Women’s LDR committees voted at the USATF Convention to select which bid would host the Trials. Representatives from both committees unanimously selected Houston. As it turned out the precedence and vote meant little towards the final outcome. USATF CEO Max Siegel wanted LA and it was pointed out to the committees that the USATF bylaws don’t specify the selection process even if has always been done that way. It was also pointed out that the USOC owns all rights to the Trials and that USATF simply recommends a location to the USOC and with no rule then the CEO has the final say. Thus the USATF CEO and USOC wanted LA and that was that regardless of what the athletes desired. Sounds like the old days of the AAU dictating to the athletes rather than representing them – and we all know what happened to the AAU even though it literally took an act of congress to get rid of them – may need to drag out the RRCA Athletes Bill of Rights once again. The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 (S.2727) signed into law by President Jimmy Carter gave the USOC HTC NEWS 214 - 24 the mandate to resolve disputes through arbitration. Have we come full circle where the USOC is now the villain? Probably should have seen this coming when the LA Marathon LLC hired Tracey Russell away from the successful Atlanta Track Club and the World’s largest and most prestigious 10K to be their CEO of a marathon that has never been on the same level as the major marathons in the world. Seemed odd to me at the time and now it makes you wonder if this was planned long ago. It’s all about money. LA is one of the world’s biggest media markets and the Trails will be broadcast on NBC. I should also note that McCourt Global acquired the operating rights to the LA Marathon in 2008. Also this may be a show for the IOC as it has been reported that LA plans to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. LA held the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. It will be interesting to see how all this turns out. DEEP THOUGHTS ON RUNNING & MUSIC I’ve heard it said that runners who are compelled to listen to music while running are the same people who are less than comfortable when left to their own thoughts, or put more simply, that only boring people get bored when running. I’m not sure it’s that simple. And I doubt it’s the same for everyone. But for me one truth stands out. Lifelong, running and music have been such important parts of me—in essence, two of the three great joys of my life, matched only by parenthood—that each deserves my full attention. When I offer that, each bestows upon me its own unique and magnificent reward. Last two paragraphs from the article “Parallel Universes” by Michel deLisle, musician, runner and editor of Footnotes, the award winning newsletter of the Knoxville Track Club. SUPPORT THE CLUB’S BIGGEST RACE HTC members please plan to run and/or volunteer to support this year’s Cotton Row Run. There are 5K and 10K races and a 1 mile Fun Run for children and walkers. VOLUNTEER http://cottonrowrun.com/ RETIREMENT ARTICLE FEEDBACK Harold & Louise, This afternoon, I received the latest HTC NEWS. I could not help but marvel over the tremendous contribution the two of you have made to the HTC and the running community in general. I did not start racing until I was 50. At the time, I lived in Dothan and, then, in Guntersville. This meant lots of driving early in my racing career for me to stay active in the Huntsville area running community and, regrettably, I did not make much of a contribution to that community, unless frequent racing could be considered a contribution. But, nonetheless, you have probably, unknowingly, made me feel at home here doing the thing which has meant so much to me as I have grown older. I just wanted to say thanks. Mac (McCrady) Harold, Jeff forwarded to me your retirement column in the HTC newsletter. You have much to be proud of – quite a "career" of service for both you and Louise and I wanted to offer my sincere thanks for your friendship over most of those 40 years. (It was 1977 when I showed up in Alabama in my mother's VW with a box of Running Times flyers in the back. I met both you and Nick Costes during my swing through the state.) Where has the time gone? I hope our paths will cross in the near fu- HTC NEWS 214 - 25 ture. Jeff keeps talking about a gathering somewhere warm for all of the "old timers." It would be great to see you there. I am more of a biker than a runner these days, but did manage to run a 3:47 marathon in Chicago last fall. Best, Phil Stewart Publisher, Road Race Management Co-founder, Running Times magazine Event Director, Credit Union Cherry Blossom Harold and Louise, Just read your letter in HTC News. If any people have a right to step back it is you two. Your contributions to the club and to the sport are so enormous. The fact they span many decades while impressive, more impressive is the dedication, innovations, sticktoitiveness, loyalty and selflessness that you two have brought to your sport and the community. I salute you and Louise as I am sure so do so many of us who had the privilege of working closely with you. Jeff (Darman) Past RRCA President Director, Capital Challenge Harold and Louise, The HTC News arrived today and I read the article on you two deciding that you had had enough fun (and much work) are not standing for any elective spot on the HTC board. You two certainly have been the heart and soul of the beginning and most of the history of that club. I certainly have admired what you have done for the sport and for the club. I also know that there comes a time to hang up the "spikes". Looking forward to our next meeting in Atlanta. Cheers, John (Dunkelberg) Winston-Salem, NC Hi, Harold, Just got the Jan-Feb HTC News— another fine job. I see you (and Louise) are phasing out over the next year or two, with a well-thought-out plan for doing so. Should be plenty of time for the club to arrange for replacements. Congrats and thanks for all those years of work. And thanks for keeping me on the mail- ing list. I appreciate it. Best, Gar (Williams) Past RRCA President Dear Harold, Words can't express my gratitude for all you have done for running in the south. If as you say your wife has done as much as you the same goes for her. No two people paid or unpaid have contributed as much as you have and you certainly deserve a rest. Thanks for your memories. Hawthorne Wesley Atlanta, GA Hi Harold, I sent you a copy of the ATC Newsletter announcing the new executive director. Our previous Director, Tracy Russell, resigned after the Peachtree Road Race last year to take over the Los Angeles Marathon. We have had an interim director, Sue Payne, for 7 months. Also, I don't know if you know it or not, but Tim Singleton died, I believe in August of last year. I meant to send you an e-mail about it, but never did. I received my latest HTC news this week and was sad to see that you will not be running for office in the up coming elections. I really think a lot about both you and Louise and hopefully you will still be publishing the HTC news a couple of more years. I still have every issue that you have ever sent to me. Nobody else could ever do it as well as the both of you. Also the front and back covers looks very good in color. Good Luck, Regards, Ken Winn [The following was in response to the email sent to members announcing the results of the HTC officer elections.] Mr. Tinsley, Please let all these folks know that I appreciate their volunteering their time to support the Huntsville Track Club, both to those agreeing to sign up for another year and those volunteering for new roles. They all have my admiration. Thanks! Cheryl Webster HTC NEWS 214 - 26 Entry Fee Increases April 1, 2014 Memorial Day 2014 www.active.com HTC NEWS 214 - 27 PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Eric Fritz, HTC President § Trail Running The Huntsville Track Club's national organization is primarily the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). The key thing to note there is "Road Runners". While we do plenty of road races and yes they are by far the majority, we also do many trail races and could just as much be considered a Trail Running Club nearly as much as a Road Running Club. Although it has been around for a while, Trail Running is a younger sport than Road Running and as such it seems to have piggy backed on the infrastructure of the Road Running. I suppose running is running but anyone who has run a trail or two knows that there are vast differences between that and a road. The HTC puts on 22 events each year and 7 of those are off road. As one of those 7 events includes the Summer Cross Country Runs, which is conducted on Tuesday nights for 10 to 12 weeks throughout the summer months, I will confidently state that a solid 1/3 of our races (if not half) are not actually Road Running. Moreover, I would be amiss if I didn't take a second to comment on our club's name! We are the Huntsville Track Club, yet only 1 of those 22 events actually run on a track. I'm not sure how we got there (I'm sure Harold can fill in that detail) but I must admit, it sure does sound better than the Huntsville Road Runners Club or something like that. So anyway, back to trail running. I must admit that my first real love of running came through trail running. When I started running, there was pretty much only one game in town, Mountain Mist 50K. That is if you really wanted to run on trails out in the woods. There were some of the Cross Country events but to truly spend time amongst the trees you had to somehow be able to run 31 miles. Yikes! Fortunately these days there are more and more options popping up as the sport grows in popularity. At least now we have McKay Hollow Madness which, while very daunting, may not completely scare off the shorter distance runner. Every year in March, a few hundred runners join in the excitement as the McKay Hollow Madness commences. This race is notoriously tough. If the multitude of hill climbs does not wear you out, the seemingly ever present mud will suck the energy right out of you. A fair amount of the trails on Monte Sano mountain have been around for many years with many of them remnants of the old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) days when the park was first constructed. These trails are a valuable resource to us in Huntsville in so many ways. Unfortunately many of these trails were not constructed with sustainability in mind back then but were more of an evolution of the "easiest way through". This has caused many of the trails to become wash outs, mud pits and can be strewn with meandering reroutes to avoid the erosion. Erosion is the #1 concern with trails. In order to keep our local resource in good shape so that we can continue to use it for years to come, they need to be maintained and used in a responsible manner. Typically this means avoiding them when they are not in their best shape. Yes, the best solution is to stay off the trail when it's been raining recently and the ground is soft. Unfortunately come race day, with participants coming into town from all over the country, we can't just drop everything and reschedule until it is nice and dry out. So what can we do? • Stay on the trail: Trails are narrow paths for us to run/walk/hike through nature. If you get off the trail, you’re walking on nature. • Run through it: Get your feet wet! That big mud puddle in front of you will only get bigger if you try to run around it. (And you will use less energy, and race faster running straight through the puddles, I promise!). Don't worry about muddy shoes, you can hose them off when you get home to get the grit out and let them air dry or stuff with newspaper. If you do this they'll be as good as HTC NEWS 214 - 28 there were before the muddy run and ready to go next time. • Stay single file: Avoid passing when it will take you off trail. And if you are the one being passed, know it, and find a nice spot to stop and let the person behind you go on. • Run on only open trails: Respect trail and road closures. Ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. • Real time trail care: Not necessarily during a race, but if you see a branch or other debris on the trail and you (and your buddies) can move it off the trail; do so! If you know of a common problem area caused by a blow down (branch or tree that has fallen across the trail) that you frequently pass by, consider taking a folding saw or small pair of loppers on your next run to help clear the obstacle. If it's too big an obstacle to handle yourself let the appropriate agency know e.g. the state park, or Land Trust; they all appreciate receiving trail status updates. And I should mention SORBA (Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association) that es- sentially manages all the trail maintenance in the state park (as well as many other areas). • One last thing: Volunteer to come out and help maintain the trails - if you're not willing to help maintain them, what gives you the right to use them? Ok, that last one could be considered a bit harsh, but seriously. Do you know that your tax dollars do not pay for the upkeep of your state park? The entry fees, camping/cabin fees are essentially the only money that the park gets and that money only really pay for the upkeep of the main park facilities. The trails themselves are completely supported by volunteers. And the Land Trust is in the same boat. They have to support their land with money from donations and also rely on volunteers to maintain their trails. Here in Huntsville we are very fortunate to have these trails so close to us available for our use at a moments notice. If you're a trail runner, consider getting out there and helping out. We'll be looking to provide information on "Trail Work Days" in the future. And if you're not a trail runner, give it a try, you're really missing out! The meeting was called to order by President Eric Fritz at 6:45 pm. Board Members Present: Eric Fritz (President), Karen Gelmis (VP–Programs), Alex Clark (VP–Races and Equipment), DeWayne Satterfield (VP–Communications), Regena Moore (Secretary), Kathy Youngren (Treasurer), Harold Tinsley (Appointed Member – Past Board Member), and Dink Taylor (Appointed Member – Cotton Row Director). Board Members Absent: Suzanne Taylor (Appointed Member – Rocket City Marathon Director) - - - - - MEETING TOPICS - - - - GOALS/PLANS ETC FOR 2014 1. Promote HTC better/focus on our mission. 2. Produce a more uniform HTC website with daily news feed and Facebook feed that will be managed by DeWayne. 3. Schedule yearly HTC Race Director meeting to discuss being uniform with finances, sponsorships, vendors and services. 4. Membership/Image – offer online membership via the website. It was noted that HTC has an image problem. General public believes they have to be “invited” to become a member. Need to increase our Social Media awareness and make it easier for people to join. 5. Provide online HTC membership survey – How can we improve the club? 6. Develop better process for Membership Renewal/Payment collection at meetings. 7. Invite well known, Guest Speakers (runners) to attend the General Meetings. Karen will contact their agents for fees/availability. Runners mentioned: Meb Keflezighi and Billy Mills. WORKING WITH MONTE SANO STATE PARK There was some concern expressed by the park about runners using the trails for a race when it is muddy. We discussed options on how we could better address this. Options included education for the local runners on how to run on them without causing significant damage to the terrain and widening of the trails as well as assisting with trail maintenance and possibly meet with Kent to discuss other ways we can help. It was noted that the Xterra race this year caused issues due to all the rain. It was also discussed on how HTC would like to help encourage runners to purchase a yearly park pass. Karen will set up a meeting with Kent for further discussions. ASCAP UPDATE HTC has been approached by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, & Publishers) to pay for a license to play/perform music at our events. Fees are based on the projected number of attendees and will be evaluated on a yearly basis. HTC will also look into possibly obtaining a XM Radio Account to use for some of the races without penalty. FREE RACES It was discussed that the races provided free to members are probably too inexpensive for non-members and thus diminish the perceived membership value. Eric will meet with the RD’s of the following races to discuss their entry fees. Perhaps we provide some additional value for the entry fee increase like a hat/visor/pair of socks/HTC shirt. • UAH Spring 10K – 3/2/14 – Ronnie Nelson • Rocket Run 10 Miler – 3/15/14 – Valerie Connaughton • Harry Williams Track Meet – 5/17/14 – Marty Clarke • AL A&M XC – 6/14/14 – James Falcon HTC NEWS 214 - 31 FACEBOOK Page vs. group? Overall consensus was to close the Group page (as it requires approval to join) and keep the Public Page. Anyone can view or “like” the public HTC Facebook page and the page can even be viewed by non-Facebook users. We will begin transitioning over to the public page including adding all HTC events to provide an alternative Event Calendar. CHARITIES/PARTNERSHIPS/COMMUNITY • It was discussed on how we should decide which Non-profits and businesses we partner with? It is felt that we need to spend more time researching the Nonprofit groups that approaches us to be sure they are legit and find out where exactly the money is going. Are they local or global? Are they HTC members? Perhaps we need to design and follow an Application process and limit how many we work with per year. Additionally different companies are approaching the club trying to market / sell through the club. e.g. – RacePins – It was decided that the club did not want to pursue RacePins at the club level, however an individual race may utilize them if they desired. • Discussed how we should support other Non-HTC races that don’t conflict with our race dates? There is a long time concern that HSV Police will begin charging for their services as more and more races are scheduled. HOW DO WE DISTINGUISH AND PROTECT WHAT IS OURS? • Discussed the need to copyright and protect our logos and event names. The need to research lawyers and this process was brought up. • Hotel & VBC contracts signed • New CRR website: http://cottonrowrun.com/ • 2014 Beneficiary – Fallen Officers Memorial and a TBD military based charity ROCKET CITY MARATHON • Embassy Suites Hotel & VBC contracts signed. • Space & Rocket Center will host the Friday night dinner. • Course still in the approval process with City. • Jill Hadley will return as Kids Marathon RD. • Registration opens Memorial Day. • Expo Vendor details TBD. • Guest Speaker - Dave McGillivray, Boston Marathon Race Director. RRCA ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION May 1st – May 4th in Spokane, Washington. Louise Tinsley will be receiving the Browning Ross Spirit of the RRCA Award. The Browning Ross Spirit of the RRCA Award was created to honor the memory of the RRCA’s founding member, Browning Ross, who died unexpectedly in April 1998. The award honors an individual who is an unsung hero. These are the people who champion the RRCA tirelessly and enthusiastically, but prefer to stay in the background, letting others bask in the spotlight, just as Browning did. This award recognizes lifetime volunteer service over a period of many years to the running community. Congratulations, Louise! WALL OF HONOR FOR KEN WINN By Harold Tinsley § Ken Winn, who I have written about many, many times over the years I have edited the HTC NEWS, was recently inducted into the Decatur High School (GA) Wall of Honor. Ken was a standout high school runner and also for the University of Georgia, a founding member of the Atlanta Striders in 1959, and Atlanta Track Club in 1964. He was one of the 110 who ran the first Peachtree Road Race in 1970. Ken was one of the few who continued to run after college even though there were no road races in this area of the South back at that time. He competed anywhere there was a cross country or track meet that would let a post-collegiate runner compete, and there weren’t many of those available without doing a lot of traveling. He gained a reputation as a fierce competitor competing against college runners, and when road racing finally came to the south. We had many battles in road races back in the 1970s and 1980s. He was the master’s winner in the first Rocket City Marathon in 1977 finishing 13th overall in 2:29:44. In his four marathons here his averaged time was 2:31:18. His best time was 2:28:59 of the 29 marathons he ran. Even though he didn’t live in Huntsville and competed for the Atlanta Track Club he HTC NEWS 214 - 36 joined the HTC in 1975. Ken recently told me that he still has every issue of the HTC NEWS dating back to issue #9 published in May, 1975. The picture here was taken following the Wall of Honor ceremony. In the picture with Ken (on the left) are two of his closest running buddies from back in the day, Lee Fidler on the right and Hawthorne Wesley in the middle. Many of you will recognize Lee from his picture in Running Journal as a regular contributor for many years. He is a highly respected running coach and personal trainer in the Atlanta area. In the 1970s he ran races here in Huntsville when we all had to travel on the weekends to find races to run. Over the years he ran 42 marathons with his best of 2:15:03 coming in the 1980 Mardi Gras Marathon. Considering marathon times today it is hard to believe that Lee’s time in that race was only good for 10th place. There were 24 sub-2:20 and 69 sub-2:30 finishers, and none were foreigners, unlike major marathons in this country today which are dominated by Kenyan and Ethiopian professional runners. I doubt it’s possible to find a current U.S. marathon, other than the Olympic Trials, that has 24 Americans under 2:20 and 69 under 2:30. When I began publishing the HTC NEWS in 1974 Hawthorne Wesley had already been publishing the Atlanta Track Club newsletter Wingfoot for several years, which he continued to edit until 1978. This year will be the 50th Anniversary of the ATC and Hawthorne was a founding member, past president, served on the ATC Executive Board for 21 years, and one of their most dedicated volunteers. For all of those 50 years he has been the Awards Chairman and Master of Ceremonies for their spring track and field and their fall cross country banquets that honor the AllMetro High School athletes and coaches. Seven of those athletes have gone on to be Olympians with one a gold medalist and two silver medalists. A number of others have reached the finals of the U.S. Olympic Trails. The highlight of this year’s Atlanta Track Club Awards Banquet was the announcement that in a tribute to the ATC’s 50th Anniversary the club will be granting a $2,500 college scholarship to a male metro Atlanta high school senior. The scholarship will be named in honor of Hawthorne Wesley’s dedication to high school athletics. At the 2012 USATF Georgia Association Banquet Hawthorne received the Lifetime Achievement Award. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of USATF Georgia Association Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Interestingly Hawthorne was competing for Auburn when I was running at Clemson and he remembers us competing in a two mile indoor race on a dirt track in Montgomery. A teammate of mine at Clemson, John Dunkelberg a 440/880 yard specialist, also competed in that indoor meet. John was another pioneer who continued to compete after graduation and became a national class runner competing on three USA teams overseas. According to the history of the ATC written by Julia Emmons in 1989, John was also one of the track athletes that formed the Atlanta Striders in 1959. I should note that the Atlanta Track Club was formed by track and field athletes and coaches, because there were no road races in 1964. The three in the picture here represent many training miles and more races that probably few can match and they contributed significantly to the birth of road racing and track clubs in the south. We are sad to report that a fourth pioneer of that group, Tim Singleton, died last fall. In 1966 Singleton put on the first ATC road race and in 1970 founded the Peachtree Road Race that is now the largest and most prestigious 10K road race in the world. When Tom Bolt founded the Huntsville Track Club in 1971 our constitution and bylaws were modeled after those of the ATC. Road racing and track clubs in this area of the south basically grew out of what that core group in Atlanta pioneered. Back in the 1970s there weren’t many road races and those were just in the major cities, so we had to travel most weekends to find a road race to run and in the summer we competed in track meets. At a road race in Huntsville there would be runners from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Nashville and Florence, AL, and frequently runners even from Knoxville. On a following weekend most of those same runners would be at a race in one of those cities. Batchelor § When one of my patients calls to make an appointment, she asks if she can come in to get some "spine candy". She states that being adjusted feels so good, it’s like eating candy. She no longer has pain; she comes in now to complete the correction of her spinal alignment. When she first came into the clinic a month ago, she had pain in her lower back and down her right leg. Within a few weeks, we were able to correct her pain and teach her specific exercises that would enhance the correction. Now, when this patient comes in for treatment, the procedures that we use are to complete the correction so that she is not predisposed to the same pain in the future. Most of my patients enjoy being treated. If it only the patient who enters the clinic in severe pain who might experience a slight discomfort when they are treated. Most of the therapies that we use feel very good. Decompression is a rehab machine that opens the space where nerve pressure exists. It is quite comfortable and most patients state that they would like to remain on the machine for the entire day because it feels so good. Electrical acupuncture is another therapy that we use. It interrupts the cycle of pain. Most patients experience a reduction in pain from it because it blocks the sensory impulses that carry pain messages from the area of pain to the brain. Galvanic current is another therapy used in our office. It reduces inflammation and pain by separating the positive and negative charges inside the nerve fiber. Then they rejoin and interrupt pain. This usually feels very comfortable. Laser is used when a patient has an inflammatory condition. Cellular effects occur when a therapeutic laser light interacts with cells, higher ATP levels are produced which then boosts DNA production; this improves cell membrane permeability and initiates the release of nitric oxide. These three events then lead to a cascade of beneficial effects increasing cellular energy and health. During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved Manipulation or adjustments are done by hand or instrument. This specific method of spinal correction is used to realign misaligned vertebrae. Since I began practice several decades ago, I've treated over 11,000 patients. The treatments and therapies listed above have been responsible for restoring tremendous amounts of health and happiness and perhaps saving many marriages and relationships. RECORDS Compiled and Maintained by Buck Jones § CRITERIA: Criteria for a state record include the following: (1) Alabama resident (2) U.S. citizen (3) Race run in Alabama (4) Certified courses. BIRTHDATES: Anyone noting their name in the state record listings, please call or write if I show no birth date for you. CHANGES: Potential changes to this list or any future list are welcome, just call or write me at the phoneaddress listed below. HELP: Race Directors, Club Board Members, and Runners, help me a little and I will be able to provide you with accurate state records. ► WEBSITE & EMAIL ADDRESS FOR ALABAMA STATE RECORDS ◄ Website: http://www.staterunningrecords.com-index.html Alabama Running Data Center - Phone: 256-539-1922 C-O Buck Jones, 2920 Eastern Shore Drive, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763 e-mail: [email protected] P - Pending Record, birthdate/hometown required within 6 months of race date or will be dropped. a - Point to Point Course, better than State Record but not eligible for State Record. * - Non U.S. Citizen, better than the State Record but not eligible for a State Record. # - Best Time for Distance-Sex on Point to Point Course. T - Tie performances for same age. RACE DIRECTORS: Race directors please note the following information if you have a certified race. On your race results I need individual ages, not just by age groups. Also I need the home town listed, in order to confirm the runner is an Alabama resident. Without the above I can't use the results, unless the runner is well known to me. I do need birthdates for record holders and would suggest that all race directors add a place on the entry forms. I would not expect birthdates to be added to the race results but they would be available should I or USATF Road Running Information Center need them. USATF RRIC is the national data center for long distance road-track racing, having taken over from the NRDC. I will process all Alabama race results as the state record keeper through to USATF RRIC. NOTE: Birth dates are still required for an age record, however those dates are no longer being published.
