Dear Reader:
The Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project, a program of the Ferre Institute, Inc., is
pleased to provide the 2010-2011 edition of its Directory of Family Building Services
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) People. The Directory is designed to
assist LGBT people in upstate New York find health and human service providers that will help
them build and strengthen their families.
Each of the organizations and providers listed here is either explicitly LGBT-affirming
or has signed a consent stating that “listing in the Directory makes a statement to LGBT
individuals and couples that they deserve and can expect caring and sensitive service from
my/our organization.” Obviously, however, the Family Building Project cannot guarantee that
consumers will be satisfied with their experience with a given provider. Nor can we state that the
Directory is a complete list of LGBT affirming practices.
The Directory is divided into the following categories:
Adoption/Foster Care
Attorneys and Mediators
Childcare and Schools
Community Resources
Faith Communities
Financial Advisors
Genetic Counselors
Medical Providers
Realtors
Sperm Banks
Surrogacy
Therapists and Counselors
Travel and Camps
This edition of the Directory of Family Building Services is being made available at
our website at www.PrideandJoyFamilies.org. We plan to continually update and expand the
Directory of Family Building Services and for that we will need your help. We welcome
additional referrals and provider listings, feedback on your experiences with the providers listed
here, and reader suggestions on how to improve this resource (see forms at back of the
Directory). Please contact the Family Building Project by letter, phone, fax or email with your
input. Thank you.
Yours Sincerely,
Claudia E. Stallman
Project Director

Offers domestic adoption, surrogacy in India, home studies, education classes and help
with second parent adoptions. Our domestic adoption program is open to couples and
singles and with open domestic adoption, birth parents choose the adoptive parent(s)
by looking at profiles and videos. AFTH’s Heartbeats Assisted Reproduction Program
has partnered with Surrogacy Abroad to offer gestational surrogacy in India. This
program makes it possible for intended parents who are unable to carry a child, to
have a child that is biologically related to them. While maintaining the high quality of
medical care, surrogacy in India is considerably less expensive that surrogacy in the U.S.
and allows both intended parents of LGBT couples to be listed on the child’s birth
certificate. AFTH is proud to be one of the only two adoption agencies to have
6
received the Human Relations Committee’s Seal for supporting our LGBT families. For

out of their homes or have run away from foster care because of homophobia,

harassment, and physical abuse. Once on the streets, the majority of them turn to

Pacific Reproductive Services is lesbian-owned and was founded in 1984 specifically to
serve the lesbian community. We provide the country's largest selection of donors
"willing to be known" and meet a child at least once, should the child request it, after he
or she reaches 18. This large selection of such donors, who are more challenging to
recruit than those who wish to remain anonymous, reflects our commitment to the
special needs of lesbian families. We are a sperm bank that provides nationwide
shipping and also offers insemination services at our offices in San Francisco and
Pasadena, California. We are a leader in donor testing and screening and also perform
more extensive genetic testing than any other U.S. sperm bank. Lastly, in addition to
surpassing FDA regulations, our accreditations include licensures in the two states with
the most rigorous standards (New York and California).

www.adoptionsfromtheheart.org
AFTH is proud to be one of the only two adoption agencies to have
received the Human Relations Committee’s Seal for supporting our LGBT families. For

Rainbow Heights Club, located in Brooklyn, New York, is an advocacy program for
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender consumers requiring mental health services. We
provide socialization, support, peer advocacy, and a safe place to take the next step
on your road to emotional recovery and wellness. We are not a mental health clinic.
Instead, Rainbow Heights Club picks up where your psychiatrist or therapist leave off, by
providing a place where you can share your experience with staff and consumers who
understand where you're coming from. The Club is growing, and we need your input,
energy and ideas!
