In 1928, Amelia Earhardt took her first successful flight over the Atlantic. The iron lung
was first used at a children’s hospital in Boston. And the Eddlemon family migrated from
Missouri to Idaho to start what is now Eddlemon Family Farms.
The original Eddlemon farmstead was a dairy, with a few acres of feed crops for their
Holsteins. Patriarch Roy Eddlemon, just a boy when the farm began, was one of the
founding members of the Meridian Dairy and Stock Show (now known as Meridian
Dairy Days). The family sold their Holsteins in 1999 after 70 years of dairy operations.
But after just a few years of moo-less quiet, they decided to purchase a small herd of
Angus beef cattle that’s still around today.
In 1958, Roy’s son John started a hog operation after a number of years in FFA and 4-H
during his school days. Each year, he pays forward the help he received by selling a few
animals from his hog and cattle herd to the latest generation of local 4-H and FFA members.
John and his wife Kathleen still produce crops like alfalfa, corn silate, wheat, and
Austrian peas to sell and feed their hogs and cattle, which they show at local and state
fairs. The latest addition to the farm is a greenhouse operation started in 1993 by their
daughters Lucinda as an FFA project. Twenty years later, Country Greenhouse is a
significant part of the farm, selling seasonal hanging baskets, flowers, vegetables and
more to the public.
For nearly 90 years, Eddlemon Family Farm has been a labor of love, one that John and
Kathleen look forward to passing along to their daughters and granddaughters.
