pregnant women and their children.
Our Lady’s Inn Resident’s Story
What does a girl do when she is pregnant and told she can
no longer stay at home?
Markita was facing that question as a 9th grader in 1990.
In April 1990, Markita found herself dropping out of high school and jumping
from shelter to shelter that could each only accommodate her for a couple days
at a time. Being a pregnant teenager is difficult enough, but being alone and
constantly searching for a bed for the night is truly overwhelming. After many
phone calls, she found Our Lady’s Inn and moved in. After being so afraid, she
finally felt safe.
Her son, Markquise, was born on August 22, 1990. She remained at the Inn for
a few months after his birth and then went to stay with family.
“Our Lady’s Inn taught me how to be a mother. The staff were strict – you
had to help cook, pick up after your kids, and bathe them. I truly learned
how to be more responsible and what I was willing to do for my kids…
I came out knowing I wanted more for myself and my kids.”
Over twenty years went by, and throughout that time, Markita got her GED
and graduated in May with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She said it
took a while to get back to school but once she got her GED she jumped into
her college classes immediately. She realized that, “Just because we find
ourselves in a place, doesn’t mean we have to stay there.”
Currently a drug counselor, she hears from of a lot of pregnant women who are
homeless and feel they have nowhere to go and recently, she found herself
speaking with a client who was pregnant and homeless and who also had small
children. She could not find a place to stay where her children could stay with
her. Markita searched for Our Lady’s Inn and although the Inn was initially full,
room was found and the mom and children had found safety.
Markita immediately wanted to help after finding Our Lady’s Inn again. She now
comes weekly to help the women struggling with their addictions. “Seeing the
women really touches my heart, knowing Our Lady’s Inn has been around
all this time helping women.”
Markita’s story has truly come full circle and she says, “I didn’t see it coming,
Jesus had all this figured out. There were many lessons learned from the
Inn, it just took time for it to all settle in.”

Our Lady’s Inn Programs
IN-SHELTER PROGRAM
In a safe and loving environment each woman is supported by a case manager offering her
guidance and structure to assist in her effort to achieve her individual educational,
parenting, employment and stable housing goals.
Women share in household chores, learn parenting and life skills and establish a daily
routine. They attend workshops and training programs in stress management, household
budgeting, smoking cessation, domestic violence prevention, healthy relationship building
and employment readiness.
Offering classes in nutrition, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care and other related
topics, staff nurses also advocate on behalf of the woman for appropriate pre-natal and
post-natal care as well as pediatric services for her children.
Staff counselors assess the psycho-social supports needed by each woman, offer emotional
and mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment referrals, as well as referrals for
other psycho-social needs.
AFTERCARE
When it is time for a family to leave the Inn, two years of Aftercare case management is
offered to them. Working with the family through home visits, office visits, monthly
newsletters, and telephone calls, the Aftercare staff provides additional referrals where
needed, including transitional housing referrals.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
Our Lady’s Inn has a 4-unit, one-year transitional housing program for mothers ready
for more independent living, but requiring more intensive program support than others.
Supported by an on-site house mother, each mother transitions into a fully furnished one
bedroom apartment with her children where she assumes the duties of running a household
while being closely guided by her Aftercare Caseworker and OLI program supports.

Dear Friends,
The year 2013 marked the 32nd year of our mission to be a life-changing, life-saving choice
for pregnant, homeless women and children. We honored Loretto Wagner, through whose
tenacity, faith and vision Our Lady’s Inn was founded. Now, still faithful to her vision, and
blessed with prudent and forward thinking leadership and professional staff, with a
comprehensive, accredited program, we finish the year financially stable and poised to meet
our future needs.
On November 10th, the chapel at Our Lady’s Inn-South was
blessed and dedicated in honor of Loretto and Ray Wagner.
Surrounded by family, faithful supporters and fellow
founders including Sam and Gloria Lee, Loretto reflected on
humble beginnings. Now CARF Accredited, Our Lady’s Inn has
a rich program, addressing issues of health, education, jobs and
spiritual and emotional healing as well as the physical well
being of mother and child. Issues reflecting societal changes
and declines demand exceptional leadership and staff - eager, qualified, faithful to our
mission, and humbly dependent on prayer, sacrifice and hard work. So, too, were the tasks
addressed by the Board of Directors, whose expertise and passion guided us through the
challenges of asset protection and growth, and IT infrastructure and data management
upgrades. Finally, we are on tract to pay off our $1M loan on the home in Defiance in 2014
while keeping our budget balanced in these uncertain financial times. Without the faithful
and generous support of you, our friends and benefactors, we could not be so blessed.
Solid strength: prudent leadership, accredited program, faithfulness to our mission,
extraordinary people in administration, staff, volunteers, and board - and the blessing
of our friends, benefactors and our Gracious God. This is our story for 2013 and our promise
for the future. We look to each of you to walk with us as we continue to grow as we are led;
to serve more, to be more - to invite others to become a part of the miracle of life that is
Our Lady’ s Inn. Please continue to keep us in your prayers.
