TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION – RESIDENTIAL GRINDER PUMP & BASIN.
Village of Rock Creek, Ashtabula County, Ohio – July 2016
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, tools and equipment required to furnish
and install the residential grinder pump as a retro-fit to existing grinder stations
throughout the locations of the Village of Rock Creek specified in the Plans.
B. The Residential Grinder Pump shall be supplied with all major components and supplies
as a unit by one (1) vendor to assure system compatibility. Principal units shall be (1)
pump, (2) controller, (3) retrofitting appurtenances, and (4, and where specified)
basin/crock with appurtenances
1.2
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. In addition to the requirements described herein, comply with manufacturer’s instructions
and recommendations for work.
1.3
SUBMITTALS
A. Submittals shall be in accordance with the General Project Requirements and include (at
minimum) a catalog cut of the product showing technical specifications and product data.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1
PUMP
Each pump shall be a Keen Pump, KG2-C or KHG2-C Series, or approved equal, capable
of delivering a minimum of 20 GPM at 40’ TDH, and shall be UL-listed and FMapproved. The pump shall have a submersible-type motor with an attached grinder unit.
Pump shall have the design such that it operates in such a fashion whereby solids shall be
fed in a downward, horizontal, and upward direction into the grinder mechanism as the
high head pumping unit develops suction at the inlet. The grinder cutting blades shall
have the ability to be directionally reversed automatically or manually by electrical
controls for longer cutter life.

“Reversal” is not interpreted as being meant to remove the pump and physically reverse
or turn over the blades; pumps which only operate in one direction will not be considered
“equal.”
The grinder shall be capable of cutting materials normally found in residential sanitary
sewage such as sanitary napkins, hygiene products, disposable diapers, wash rags, and
food particles, and then grinding them into fine slurry which will pass freely through the
pump and force main.
2.2
MOTOR
The motor shall be a 2 HP, 3450 RPM, oil-filled design capable of operation on power
with the following characteristics:
Single-phase, 208/230V capacitor start and run, NEMA design B.
The motor housing shall be heavy duty, oil-filled, finned cast iron for heat dissipation and
seal/bearing lubrication. The pump motor shall operate over the complete performance
curve without overloading or excessive vibration when operating in either clockwise or
counterclockwise direction. Bearings shall be ball bearings of chrome steel. There shall
be a single thermal sensor embedded in the winding of the motor to sense the temperature
of the windings. This bi-metallic sensor shall be a normally closed contact which will
open on high temperature and re-close when the temperature drops below the pre-set
point. The thermal sensor shall be wired in conjunction with the motor starter to stop the
pump in the event of a high temperature condition. The motor shall be UL-listed.
The motor shall be furnished with a minimum 30’ length of type SOOW submersible
power cable. This cable will terminate in a junction box specified elsewhere for
simplification of installation and removal.
The combination pump/motor shaft shall be machined from ANSI 416 Stainless Steel.
The pump and motor housings shall be of Class 30 gray cast iron meeting the
requirements of ASTM A-48 with a pressed-in stator for maximum heat dissipation.
2.3
CUTTERS
The rotary cutter shall be #440 SS hardened to a 55-80 Rockwell C, and shall be keyed
and bolted to the stainless steel shaft. The cutter shall be capable of operating in a
forward or reverse direction by means of an automatic controller without removing the
unit from the pit. The SS shredding disc shall be mounted onto the lower casting with SS
cap screws. The cutter and shredding disc shall have the capability to be removed from
the unit without disassembly of the pump for easy surface reconditioning.

2.4
IMPELLER
The pump impeller shall be of the bidirectional design keyed to the shaft and shall be
manufactured from ductile iron.
2.5
CONTROL PANEL
The control panel (where specified for replacement) shall be housed in a NEMA 4X FRP
enclosure and shall be of a design which controls a single pump from a 3-float system.
The panel shall contain the required starting, control and alarm circuits. An IEC-rated
contractor shall be furnished to start the pump. There shall be a Klixon or equal overload
provided and a 20-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. The control circuit shall be 115 volts,
and have a glass tube fuse for circuit protection. There shall be a “Hand/Off/Auto” threepole selector switch provided for operation of the pump. Single-phase panels shall
contain easy-access run and start capacitors and adequately sized potential relay. The
panel shall be equipped with circuitry which automatically reverses the direction of the
cutter blades on alternating starts. Alternately, upon reaching a panel-controlled current
threshold indicative of a possible cutter jam condition, the pump shall be caused to
reverse. A padlock hasp shall be provided on the outside of the control panel enclosure.
High water conditions shall be indicated by a visible light with flasher and Lexan globe.
The bulb in the alarm light shall be a minimum 40W, high-intensity bulb that shall be
only accessible through the inside of the enclosure. An audible alarm buzzer shall be
provided for connection of the pump control wires and the float wires. A wiring
schematic and troubleshooting guide shall be included with each panel. The panel shall
be UL listed and be labeled. The panel shall be supplied for mounting to a remote flat
surface.
Inside the panel enclosure shall be furnished a light connected for seal failure warning.
In the event of water intrusion into the cavity between the tandem mechanical seals, a
current shall be made that will actuate an indicating light. This will signal that water is
present and that the pump should be inspected by a technician familiar with this type of
system.
2.6
BASIN AND RAIL SYSTEM
Where specified for replacement, a fiberglass basin shall be provided having in inside
diameter of 24 inches and a depth of 8 feet. The basin shall be molded of fiberglass
reinforced polyester resin manufactured by the “lay-up and spray” technique to assure
that the interior surface is smooth and resin rich. The basin shall have a minimum wall
thickness of 1/4". A steel anti-flotation plate shall be molded into the bottom of the basin.
The basin shall have a cover manufactured of a minimum of 3/8" polypropylene, and
shall be bolted to the basin with stainless steel cap screws. Cadmium-plated nuts for the

screws shall be embedded in the fiberglass basin to prevent turning and for corrosion
resistance.
The basin shall be shipped with an Adapta-Flex or equal inlet grommet for entry of the
receiving inlet pipe. If necessary by adverse condition of existing pipe, a 10-foot section
of PVC schedule 40 pipe shall be furnished and installed complete with transition
couplings to suit.
A rail system assembly shall be provided which permits easy removal and installation of
the pump without the necessity of personnel entering the wet well. Structural guide
brackets with guide yokes of sufficient bearing strength to prevent binding shall bolt to
the pump. The yokes shall mate over guide rails of a minimum of 3/4" stainless steel pipe
running between an upper rail support and the discharge connection. The pump shall lift
easily and smoothly and seat onto the discharge assembly with no need for O-rings,
sealing flanges, or alignment shims. No rotary movement of the pump shall be required to
accomplish this connection and seal. The pump weight will bear only on the discharge
assembly and remain free and clear of the basin bottom. Lifting will be by means of
polypropylene rope which can support three times the weight of the pump and lift-out
brackets without stretching. Galvanized chains, galvanized pipe guide rails or welded
steel painted parts are not permitted.
The outlet of the pump shall discharge into 1-1/4" Internal PVC piping which shall have a
PVC discharge shut-off valve plus an internal check valve. The shutoff valve shall be a
PVC true union ball type valve with Teflon seats. A handle extension shall be supplied to
reach the shut-off valve.
2.7
FLOATS
Where specified for replacement of existing basins, three (3) non-mercury float switches
shall be provided for control of "OFF", "ON", and "HIGH WATER ALARM" functions.
Cords shall be of sufficient length to reach the included junction box without splices.
The float controls shall be mounted on a stainless steel bracket with nylon snubbers such
that the elevation of the floats can be easily adjusted from the surface.
2.8
JUNCTION BOX
Where specified for replacement of existing basins, one (1) junction box for each basin
shall be constructed of structural plastic for corrosion resistance, stability, and
mechanical strength, and shall be rated NEMA 6. The enclosure shall be of adequate
thickness and properly reinforced to provide good mechanical strength, and shall have a
fully gasketed cover that is held in place by four captive stainless steel screws which
cannot be removed from the cover, with heads totally encapsulated such that no metal
parts are exposed. The screw heads shall be of adequate size for easy installation and

removal without the use of special tools. The cover shall be fastened onto the main body
of the junction box by means of a totally corrosion-resistant tether to prevent dropping
the cover into the basin during service.
An adequate number of cord grips shall be supplied for incoming pump and switch cords.
The cord grips shall be made of non-corrosive material such as PVC or nylon, and shall
make an effective seal around the wire jacket. The cord grip shall also seal to the junction
box wall with an O-ring, gasket, or other effective means.
The junction box shall have a PVC solvent weld socket type conduit hub mounted in the
bottom of the enclosure. The hub shall be of a corrosion resistant material and shall be of
adequate size to accommodate the number of wires required to operate the pump.
The incoming wires shall be sealed in a manner that is consistent with industry standards.
This is to ascertain that condensation from the conduit (or groundwater) will not enter the
enclosure. The interior of the enclosure shall be of adequate size to accommodate the
wires and connections required to operate the pump.
The wires running between the control panel and the junction box shall be color coded or
otherwise identified and fastened to the pump and switch controls by means of
adequately sized and insulated twist lock or crimp connectors. These wires shall be
furnished and installed by the contractor.
The junction box shall be designed to NEMA 6 standards for occasional submergence.
2.9
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
Electrical power shall enter the side of the basin by means of a conduit. This conduit
shall be fitted into a threaded coupling installed at the factory in the side of the tank. The
conduit shall be sealed against ground water intrusion by means of "electrician's putty" or
other suitable means.
2.10
POST
A new 4” x 4” x 8’ treated post shall be installed
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1
INSTALLATION
The equipment shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations.

3.2
INITIAL LUBRICATION
Initial lubrication required for the start-up and field test operation shall be furnished and
applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
3.3
TESTING AND START-UP
The Contractor shall make arrangements with the grinder pump station supplier for startup and testing of the completed station. Minimum tests will verify pump seating and
slide arrangements; pump rotation, voltage and current checks, proper functioning of all
control and alarm floats, directional rotation reversing; absence of any seal failure
warnings and testing of high alarm warning devices. The Owner, Owner’s
Representative, or designated authority shall be presented with written certification of
successful testing. Owners shall also be briefed in operation of pump, meaning of various
lights, and simple trouble shooting. Startup will confirm Owner is provided with a copy
of an O & M Manual.
Warranty: The pump shall have a minimum warranty of either 12 months from startup or
18 months from shipment from factory, whichever occurs first.
These specifications describe a grinder pump as manufactured by the Keen Pump
Company, Inc. of Ashland, Ohio. This is not done to exclude other reputable
manufacturers from bidding. However, each bidding contractor shall base his bid on the
named equipment and the contract will be awarded on that basis. To receive
consideration of alternate equipment, the Owner shall be presented with adequate
information to forward to the Engineer for evaluation of the alternate at least one week
prior to the receipt of bids. The bidder shall list the amount to be added or deducted from
the base bid for the inclusion of this alternate equipment. Should the alternate be
accepted, the base bid shall be reduced by an amount equal to the listed deduction.
3.4
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
Operation and maintenance (O & M) manuals shall be provided prior to or with the
delivery of the equipment. The O & M manuals shall include instructions on storage,
installation, start-up, and operation and maintenance, together with a complete parts list
and a recommended spare parts list. The O & M manuals shall be in compliance with the
General Requirements.
Three (3) copies shall be presented upon contract completion; one (1) for the Owner
(Village of Rock Creek), and two (2) for the Village of Rock Creek Wastewater
Department.

The KEEN PUMP KHG(X)2 series centrifugal grinder pumps easily handle residential,
light commercial or industrial sanitary waste, reducing it to a fine slurry. The KHG(X)2

The recessed centrifugal impeller allows 100% performance curve

Technical Specifications
A NEMA 4X fiberglass control panel shall be furnished with each pumping unit / basin package.
The control panel enclosure shall be molded of glass reinforced polyester resins, whi ch are
chemically resistant to corrosive atmospheres. The resin system shall be pigmented to impart a gray
color to the enclosure and be resistant to ultraviolet ligh t.
The resin system also shall include a flame retardant to obtain a flammability rating whi ch meets U.L.
94V-0. Heat distortion temperature shall be 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
The enclosure shall be of one piece, NEMA 4X fiberglass, weatherproof construction with smooth,
rounded corners and shall be constructed to have a smooth exterior and interior. The enclosure shall
be fitted with a closed cell neoprene gasket cover. The enclosure shall have back panel mounting
provisions.
The cover shall be hing ed with a heavy-duty corrosion resistant stainless steel piano hing e. The
cover shall be lockable by means of two (2) high quality combination stainless steel latches and
padlock hasps.
The enclosure shall be provided with external mounting feet on the top and bottom of the enclosure.
These mounting feet shall be of fiberglass and molded as an integral part of the enclosure.
The back panel shall be a minimum of .080" aluminum and held in place by (4) #10 screws, whi ch wil l
mate to four (4) threaded standoffs, whi ch are molded into the enclosure.
The panel shall include a doubl e pole, main disconnect circuit breaker, control circuit breaker, I.E.C.
rated motor contactor, start and run capacitors, plug -in control relay, pump hand-off-auto switch, red
alarm ligh t, audible alarm, alarm silence switch, enclosed wire way, terminal blocks, ground lug and
all necessary wiring . Terminal strips must have a minimum 3" clearance to the inside wall of the
enclosure for ease of wiring .
The control panel shall be fitted with a red lexan alarm ligh t. The ligh t shall remain solidl y illu minated
for moisture detection in the low er seal chamber of the pump. The alarm ligh t shall flash, indi cating a
high water alarm conditio n in the basin. The ligh t shall be approximately 3" high by 2" diameter,
mounted on the top surface of the enclosure, visible from all 360-degree direction. The bulb shall be
40-watt minimum high intensity-medium base type. The bulb or lens shall be easily replaced by
removing a threaded setscrew and locking washer on the interior of the panel. The lens shall be
mounted on top of the enclosure with a neoprene gasket.
The alarm conditio n wil l produce a bright glow ing alarm ligh t and audible buzzer. The audible buzzer
can be silenced by means of the silence switch inside the front panel. The red indi cator ligh t wil l
remain illu minated as long as the alarm conditio n persists. Both flashing alarm ligh t and audible
buzzer wil l stop when the water level drops to normal operating conditio ns.
All internal wiring shall be neatly assembled with in an enclosed wire way. Each wire shall be a
different color or stripe (except for ground), and all incoming wires shall terminate in the terminal
block. All wires shall be 14GA. Type TEW rated for 105 degrees Celsius.
A schematic diagram shall be permanently fastened to the inside of the enclosure.
The control panel shall be U.L. listable as an assembly.

A NEMA 4X polycarbonate (optio nal fiberglass) control panel shall be furnished with each pumping
unit / basin package.
The control panel enclosure shall be molded of polyester resins, whi ch are weather and chemically
resistant to corrosive atmospheres. The resin system shall be pigmented to impart a gray color to the
enclosure and be resistant to ultraviolet ligh t.
The resin system also shall include a flame retardant to obtain a flammability rating whi ch meets U.L.
94V-0. Heat distortion temperature shall be 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

The mercury switch shall consist of a hermetically welded and sealed canister pressurized with a
pure argon gas atmosphere. The argon gas provides a clean atmosphere, extinguishing any
sparking action, resulting in long switch life.
The mercury switch shall be rated for a minimum 300,000 cycles.
The complete float control shall at a minimum be component recognized by Underwriters
Laboratories or listed with UL and CSA.
The outer shell shall consist of a corrosion-resistant ABS (Acrylonitril Butadiene Styrene) material
rated for sewage applications. The outer shell shall consist of an ultrasonically-welded
construction, watertight for moisture protection.
The electrical cord shall be a minimum 18 gauge, 2 conductor, SJOW-A jacketed cable. The cord
shall be bonded with a steel ring and epoxy potted for a watertight seal at point of entry into the
float housing. The cord shall meet and be rated for 120 VAC NEMA 5-15 / 240 VAC NEMA 6-15
standards.
The cable shall be of sufficient length to reach the ___ junction box or ___ control panel with no
splices. The minimum cable length shall be 10 feet. If other than standard cable length is provided,
the cable length shall be ___ feet.
The level controls shall be suspended from a stainless steel bracket, so adjustments or
replacements may be done without the use of any tools or entry into the basin.
