A Tribute to our Veterans
Southside Sentinel November 10, 2010 Section B Welcome to this special Veterans Day 2010 salute to the hundreds of veterans who have called Middlesex County home at some point in their lives. We honor those who have served their country in uniform, many living and some even on duty today, some deceased but still remembered, and some who gave their lives on the battlefields of several wars to protect our land. They have served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard. Each has had a hand in preserving the freedoms that define the United States of America. These are your neighbors and friends, our hometown patriots. Today would be a good time to remember those no longer with us, and to say thanks to those still living. The origin of Veterans Day In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, D.C., became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triumph). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized, that World War I was “the War to end all Wars,” November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. A total of 16.5 million Americans took part. Of those 407,000 died in service—more than 292,000 in battle. Armistice Day was changed to honor all veterans. Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of WWII and Korea, Congress was requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. On Memorial Day 1958, two more unidentified American war dead were brought from overseas and interred in the plaza beside the unknown soldier of World War I. One was killed in World War II, the other in the Korean War. In 1973, a law passed providing interment of an unknown American from the Vietnam War, but none was found for several years. In 1984, an unknown serviceman from that conflict was placed alongside the others. To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3rd U.S. Infantry, keeps day and night vigil. A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date. The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb. The nation’s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath and the playing of “Taps.” Source: www.vfw.org ‘Friend Forever’ by Larry S. Chowning World War II took the lives of several people from Middlesex County. One was Lt. William “Billy” S. Marchant of Deltaville. On June 10, 1944, Marchant was flying a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane near Rennes, France, when he was shot down by German ground fire and killed. Marchant was born in 1920 and was brought to Deltaville by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Marchant, when he was 2 years old. Growing up in Deltaville, Marchant spent his free time playing baseball and attending church activities at Zoar Baptist Church. He attended Deltaville Elementary School and graduated from Syringa High School in 1937. A short time later, he left the area to seek employment in Newport News. He joined the military in 1942 and graduated from the Air Force Advanced Flying School at Spence Field in Moultrie, Georgia, in March of 1943. There he was awarded the rank of second lieutenant. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force and left for England in August of 1943. As an Air Force fighter pilot in Europe, he earned the rank of 1st lieutenant. Just before his death, Marchant was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts in destroying a German twin-engine aircraft and damaging three others. In 1985, the Combat Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9636 dedicated a plaque and marker in Marchant’s honor at the Deltaville Community Center, on the same grounds where Marchant attended elementary school and played as a child. When Marchant’s plane crashed into a field near the small village of Mouaze, his body was pulled from the plane by a farmer and he was buried William “Billy” S. Marchant Deltaville Deceased Air Force World War II A visit to cherish by Larry S. Chowning Lt Billy Marchant and his P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane. in a cemetery at a church by the townspeople. When Rennes was later liberated by Allied Forces, another farmer wrote a letter to the town mayor about Marchant. He wrote, “The Germans took the papers (wallet and watch) of the airman called “William Marchant” and told the farmer who was proprietor of the field to do what he wanted, so the farmer took care of him. He had a very nice funeral and was buried in the cemetery of Mouaze.” War records state that the townspeople treated Marchant as a hero and all the inhabitants of the village and surrounding areas came to the church where his body lay in state prior to his funeral. On that Sunday the French villagers filed by and placed flowers on Marchant’s body. Before he was buried in the church cemetery the next day, a small bottle was placed in his pocket with a paper carrying the inscription: “Friend Forever.” After the war, Marchant’s body was transferred to a military graveyard at Brittany American Cemetery near St. James (Manche), France. Marchant is the brother of Frances Hall of Christchurch and formerly of Deltaville, and uncle of Aubrey Hall of Urbanna, Claudia Soucek of Christchurch, Howard Hall of Lynchburg and Wayne Hall of Charleston, South Carolina. They have arrived in all forms, some well preserved in frames, some very old clippings from newspapers, and every form in between. Some we simply couldn’t use, most we have made an attempt at reproducing in this special section. There are about 450 photos of veterans in this tribute, all who live or once lived in Middlesex County. SSgt Albert H. This past May, Madge and her family visited the town in France where Lt. Marchant was killed, and then went to his grave at Brittany American Cemetery in France. The Vosteen family was in Europe on a multi-year missionary assignment. A side trip took them to Lt. Marchant’s grave. “God allowed us time and ability to see and hear and learn as much as we could in the short time we were there,” wrote Madge following her visit. “I am convinced—at this time—to feel that there needs to be a strong and permanent connection between Deltaville and this little village (of Mouaze). Lt. Marchant’s sister, Frances Hall of Christchurch, said she could hardly believe the story Madge and her family discovered in France. “We knew some things about my brother’s death but not near as much as what Madge discovered,” she said. It’s an amazing story of how a group of French villagers, who were under the oppressive thumb of the Germans, went to a great deal of trouble to celebrate the life of a complete stranger, but an ally fighting for their freedom. “It makes me feel good that my brother was looked upon as a hero by the people of Mouaze on the day he died,” said Mrs. Hall. The Vosteen family visited the field where Marchant crashed and stood beside his grave. “Several years ago, I got a telephone call early in the morning,” said Mrs. Hall. “It was my son Wayne and he was calling on his cell phone from France. He told me he was standing next to Billy’s grave. None of my children except Aubrey ever knew their Uncle Billy, but I think it’s wonderful they feel a need to visit him.” The VFW post in Deltaville is named in honor of native son Lt William “Billy” Marchant B2 • Southside Sentinel • Urbanna, Va. • Nov. 10, 2010 Two of the greatest: Capt. Newman and Gen. Puller Middlesex County has had several war heroes among its veterans, but none as famous as two men who moved to the county in the late 1940s. The late Capt. Beryl R. “Dick” Newman of Remlik won the Medal of Honor in World War II, and the late Lt. General Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller of Saluda was the most decorated U.S. Marine of all time. Newman (1911-1998) was awarded the Medal of Honor on January 15, 1945. At the time he was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s 133rd Infantry Division. He was awarded the medal for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty on May 26, 1944.” The citation report states that Newman and others were attacking a strongly held German Anzio-Nettuno defense line near Cisterna, Italy. “Lieutenant Newman, in the lead of his platoon, was suddenly fired upon by two enemy machine guns located on the crest of a hill about 100 yards to his front. Newman single-handedly silenced three enemy machine guns, wounded two Germans, killed two more and took 11 prisoners. In Newman’s honor, on July 17, 2001 the “Urbanna Bridge” was renamed the Beryl R. Newman Memorial Bridge, and Route 227 (Urbanna Road) from Cooks Corner to the bridge, was named the Beryl R. Newman Memorial Highway. Newman was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, but lived with his family in Lt Col Loyal M. Pease, Urbanna, World War II Capt Beryl R. Newman Remlik Deceased Army World War II The marker in honor of Capt Newman on grounds of Middlesex Courthouse. Remlik for many years. He ran a seafood business for a number of years at the Old Standard Oil dock that is today the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton’s Point. “Dick,” as Newman was called in Middlesex, was a humble man and brought little attention to his World War II heroics. Shortly after Newman’s death in 1998, a granite memorial stone was placed on the Middlesex Courthouse green in honor of his service. The inscription read: “Walking straight into the mouth of early death facing superior enemy fire power and while greatly outnumbered, this soldier displayed courage and valor, above and beyond the call of duty. His act of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity occurred May 26, 1944 near Cisterna, Italy. As the result of his actions, President Roosevelt decorated then Captain Newman, with the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military award.” Newman is buried in Remlik Wesleyan Church cemetery. In 1955, Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller (1898-1971) retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and moved with his family to Saluda. Puller is the only Marine to receive five Navy Crosses for valor, the U.S. Navy’s second highest decoration after the Medal of Honor. During his career, Puller fought guerillas in Haiti and Nicaragua, and participated in some of the bloodiest battles in World War II and the Korean Conflict. At the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea, the enemy surrounded Puller’s 1st Marine Division, and it was there that he is believed to have made this famous quote: “We’ve been looking for the enemy for some time now. We’ve finally found him. We’re surrounded. That Lt Gen Lewis B. Puller Saluda Deceased Marines 1918-55 simplifies things.” Although Puller was born in nearby West Point, Virginia, the Pullers retired to Saluda because his wife, Virginia Montague Evans, was born and raised in Middlesex County. In honor of General Puller each year, young Marines conduct a 68-mile memorial run, called the “Puller Run,” from Fort Lee in Petersburg to his gravestone in the cemetery at Christ Church in Middlesex County. The General was very highly thought of in Middlesex. In 1966, General Puller was named the first grand marshal of the Urbanna Oyster Festival and rode in the parade in a military jeep. Route 33 from West Point to Deltaville is named General Puller Highway in his honor. Capt Fernando Atienza Hardyville Navy 1967-2001 Wayne Williams Urbanna Army 1969-70 Col Calvin C. In preparation for this anniversary, the Deltaville Maritime Museum and the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society are searching for information about Civil War veterans from Middlesex County to include in the exhibits. The Maritime Museum has started an exhibit on the history of the 55th Virginia Infantry, that regiment in which a majority of soldiers served from Middlesex. Col. William Steptoe Christian formed a unit of dragoons after the raid at Harper’s Ferry (1859-60) that eventually joined the 55th Virginia Infantry in 1861. The biography of “Dr. Billy,” as he was known to his family and men, is included in the exhibit. Most, but not all, recruits from Middlesex were part of the 55th. Although there is a list of residents who served in the 55th, the list is not complete and the exhibit needs pictures and information about these soldiers. Both museums are seeking details about the service of Zedlock Grayville, Thomas King, Joseph Allen Bristow, William Smith, Thomas Gabriel Jones and John Paul Folliard. A number of Vaughns served in the 55th. Not all recruits served in the 55th. At least two men, Joseph Allen Bristow and William Henry Norton, served in the 24th Virginia Cavalry. Frank W. Scott Deltaville 9th Virginia Cavalry Confederacy The Deltaville Maritime Museum is compiling an impressive “Middlesex County in the Civil War” exhibit and is seeking information on those who served on the battlefield and homefront, photos, artifacts, and other memorabilia. Call 776-7200. (Photo by Tom Hardin) Frank W. Scott served in the 9th Virginia Cavalry and saw action in many of the major battles of the war. There must be letters or diaries out there with more details of these veterans’ service. Not all residents fought for the Confederacy. William Henry Kelly of Baltimore and Sandy Bottom (Deltaville) enlisted in the Union Army. A member of the Hurd family from Delaware also fought on the Union side. David Harris, a slave, escaped to freedom through Middlesex County, fought in the Union Navy and returned to settle in Sandy Bottom after the war. Some residents didn’t serve willingly for the Union. James Jackson, a local waterman, was pressed into service as a pilot for the Potomac flotilla. Jackson’s gruesome death aboard the “S.S. Tulip” is recounted in the Maritime Museum’s exhibit. Any information anyone might have about a Civil War veteran from Middlesex will be collected, made part of the Sesquicentennial Exhibit 2011-2015, and preserved in the museum archives. Contact either Maritime Museum curator Raynell Smith at 804-815-3102, or email museumpark@oonl. com; or Middlesex County Museum president Marilyn South at 776-6983, or email [email protected]. Ask a Warrior Would you like to know more about today’s military life and policies? Led by Major William Christopher of Williamsburg and Lancaster, a group of armed forces representatives studying at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, has agreed to answer your questions. Christopher is an Army Artillery Officer currently attending Intermediate Level Education at Fort Leavenworth. The 10-month-long school is akin to graduate school and helps prepare military officers for the transition from Company Grade Officers to Field Grade Officers. The officers are in the Army, Air Force and Navy, and look forward to sharing the story Col Wm.
