IMPORTANT OWNER-OPERATOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS S9020/TRN-AG-DER STAINLESS STEEL TURNBUCKLES WITH POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL LEVERACTION FASTGUN DERRINGER O/S APPLICATION: ALL BED AND BUMPER MOUNTED TIEDOWNS PLEASE GIVE THIS BOOKLET TO YOUR CUSTOMER AS IT CONTAINS CRITICAL OPERATOR INFORMATION REV HHB 6/26/06 TECH SUPPORT (800) 246-8132 Page 1 S9020 INVENTORY LIST 2 - LONG SPRINGLOADED FRONT TURNBUCKLES 2 - SHORT CUSHIONED REAR TURNBUCKLES 2 - 21” THREADED RODS 2 - 9 1/2” THEADED RODS 4 - DERRINGERS 2 - O-RINGS 4 - 1/2” SQUARE THREADED NUTS 4 - 1/4” PINS 8 - 1/2” HEX NUTS ASSEMBLY 1. Insert the 9 1/2” threaded rods into the front turnbuckles and the 21” threaded rod into the rear turnbuckles (note: the front and rear turnbuckles are labeled) now install the jam hex nuts onto the threaded rods (two for each turnbuckle). 2. Using wrenches, tighten the turnbuckle jam nut firmly against the turnbuckle body to prevent the threaded rod from spinning during installation. 3. Push the threaded rod up into the Derringer. Install the supplied square threaded nut. Use the Derringer handle assembly to hold the square threaded nut from spinning. Put a wrench on the turnbuckle nut while rotating the Derringer. This will tighten the square threaded nut onto the threaded rod. Screw the threaded rod into the square nut until the threaded rod is flush with the end of the square nut. 4. Tighten the Derringer jam nut against the Derringer. 5. Install the o-rings onto the NON-THREADED hooks of the SPRINGLOADED TURNBUCKLES ONLY! Photo C (Usually you will have 2 long turnbuckles and 2 short turnbuckles with a bed mounted tiedown system. The longer turnbuckle bodies will contain springs while the shorter turnbuckle bodies do not.) DO NOT USE the o-ring adjusting sight on the shorter non-springloaded turnbuckles (see step 7 in installation). 6. Install the Anchor Guard lever action Derringer turnbuckles and mark their respective locations (DF-Drivers Front DR-Drivers Rear, etc.) to simplify future use. INSTALLATION 1. Hang the turnbuckle from the camper anchor point by the Derringer hook (as seen in photo F). 2. With the lever in the closed position, the threaded hook should be positioned and adjusted until the lower hook is approximately 1/2” above the tiedown. 3. Remove the turnbuckle and insert the lower hook into the hole on either the camper or the tiedown.**In some applications, you may find that the threaded rod is not long enough or the hook does not easily insert into the hole on either the camper or the tiedown. You can use quick links or clevises (available at your local hardware store) in order to bypass any difficulty** 4. Open lever/breach assembly and insert the top Derringer hook into the camper anchor point. 5. **FOR SPRINGLOADED TURNBUCKLES ONLY** To check for correct spring tension, pull the lever handle down until you begin to feel spring tension when the hole for the locking pin is about 1/2 blocked (as seen in photo E). 6. The o-ring is only used as a guage to set your spring tension. Adjust the o-ring against the turnbuckle barrel before locking the lever down. Locking the lever down should result in the o-ring being spaced approximately 1/4” below the body of the turnbuckle. 7. All non-springloaded turnbuckles WILL NOT use the o-ring adjusting sight. When adjusting the tension on the non-springloaded turnbuckles, adjust for approximately one quarter less lever tension than you applied to the springloaded turnbuckle. 8. We have supplied small strips of grip tape to aid in adjusting your turnbuckles. Apply the grip tape in a comfortable location. IMPORTANT!! DUE TO THE LEVER ACTION DESIGN, THE DERRINGER MAKES IT EASIER TO OVERTIGHTEN YOUR TURNBUCKLES THAN IT IS WITH CONVENTIONAL TURNBUCKLES. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN, AS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR!! However, in some environments such as coastal regions or when coming in contact with some road chemicals, corrosion may occur. We recommend occasional polishing of our product to maintain its attractive finish. Use an approved stainless steel cleaning product which can be purchased from any automotive supplier. Page 5 RECOMMENDED TRUCK CAMPER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS When securing any heavy load (especially a camper) in your truck bed, your front tiedown points should pull the load forward as much as possible. Some camper anchor points may differ with different manufacturers, as well as the camper jack mounting locations. Your TorkLift tiedown inserts have offset triangular brackets to increase the angle of pull. These are designed to be used in the front facing forward, and the rear facing rearward but can be used in either front or rear. These recommendations are to be considered and followed as a basic rule of thumb. Obviously there will be some applications where this may not be possible. At a minimum, if opposite pull of both front and rear tiedowns cannot be achieved for whatever reason, you should have at least a forward pull at the front or rear location. If your camper does not come with rubber bumpers on the front lower portion of the camper, installing rubber bumpers (TorkLift has Rubber Bumpers available P/N A7001) or using a block of wood such as a 2 x 4 in the bed will prevent the camper from damaging the front bulkhead of the truck bed. It is normal to have some shifting or movement of the camper - especially during off road use. Remember DO NOT install your camper directly on top of a plastic bedliner, as this may allow the camper to shift during transit. Always use a rubber bedmat to minimize any movement. Page 6 322 NO.
