PETERS MO 63376-1528 his year our color tour will take us down to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri to Hawn State Park. The event will be held on October 14th. Hawn State Park is one of the loveliest parks in a system full of lovely parks. Clear, sandbottomed streams, wild areas ripe with orchids and awe-inspiring views combine to make Hawn a place that Missourians treasure. Geology buffs love Pickle Creek for the number of exposed rock types. Hikers frequent the Whispering Pine Wild Area for its quiet trails with expansive views. Bird watchers flock to the park for its variety of birds. And there are plenty of quiet spaces for people to get away and enjoy the outdoors. As in the past, the club will provide the meat, mostaccioli , and tableware. Members are to bring a covered dish or dessert and their own drinks. We will gather at the Burger King at Hwy. 44 at Hwy 141 at 8:45 am and will be leaving and 9 am sharp. This an all day club event. e-mail [email protected] Publisher-Mark Lazzareschi Web Master-Scott Lewis www.fordsunlimited.com T his will be the last month that we will be taking nominations of members to run for election to our 2013 board of directors. We will have three open positions and would like to have at least four members run for that spot. This is an opportunity to be part of the leadership for the next two years. Bill Giese and Bob Layton will be the remaining members who will serve to the end of 2013. The elections will be held at our November membership meeting. If you have interest in being a board member, please contact any current director. S econd reminder on dues. Your dues are due by December 31st. With the holidays coming up it might be a good idea to get paid up before the busy Christmas season. Dues are $20 and $10 for a second member with the same address and $5 for a third with only one newsletter per household. Please do not wait until the Awards Banquet to pay as the dues and banquet checks need to be separate. Please make your check out to “Fords Unlimited” and mail to 14 Flagstone Lane, St. Peters, MO 63376. Thanks. W hat a great day for a car show. Actually, it was a great day for doing anything outside. With the ungodly weather that we have had all summer, this day was to kill for. Taking advantage of the weather was the 16th annual Walter F. Philips Memorial Old Cars Against Cancer Wheels in Motion Day that took place on Sunday, September 9th at Westport Plaza. All proceeds benefiting the National Children’s Cancer Society. Our club showed it’s support with entering twenty one cars and trucks and also helped with a $200 donation from our treasury. Of course, no club event would not be complete unless wrapped around a good meal, so we also made a stop at Patrick's for an early lunch. Although, the day is mostly a car display, they did have a few special trophies and Scott Lewis’s Mustang took home a trophy for being the vehicle that most represented the military. We thank all of our members who were able to help out that day. The photo to the left shows board members, Kenny Simms (left) and Bill Giese (right) present one of the show sponsors, Al Mercer, also a Fords Unlimited club member, a check for $200 to support the National Children’s Cancer Society. Continued on page 3 O n September 15th, the ShowMe Mustang Club held their 25th Mustang and all Ford car show at Bommarito Ford in Hazelwood. A respite from the summer’s heat was a cloudy and cool day, disrupted only by the many hundreds of motorcycles that passed near the end of the show. Our club had 16 members present that included duel members who also belonged to the Show-Me club. Some of those members only displayed their cars. Our turnout did allowed us to take home the $50 club participation award that will most likely go to one of our charities. Some of our members were also able to head next store to the St. Martin’s Church festival for some burgers and Mexican food. We were also able to get a new member, Roland Hall, who drives a really cool 1967 LTD. Members entering cars and trucks include Bart McNail, Mark Wisby, Mark Carey, Steve Dennis, Bill Bauer, John Sullivan, Burt Pennington, Don Hricko, Jake Turnupseed, Jerry Grimmer, Terry Koch, Paula Goodrich, Willie Cole, Ken Farrar, Bill Giese and Bob Layton. Many of our members were awarded plaques and Don Hricko won one of the special trophies which was for “Most likely to get a ticket” with his Shelby Super Snake. Reprinted from AUTOWEEK-Info supplied by Bill Bufka ivilization as we know it has come to an end. Who needs the Mayans to tell us otherwise? Dogs are sleeping with cats (check out the YouTube video if you don't believe me). Wrong is now right. And one recent morning, an adorable blue-haired granny presented me with a somewhat withered but erect middle finger. Why? Well, as we were both moving along on our merry ways during the morning commute, me to her left in a Mercedes-Benz E350 coupe and she to my right in a taupe nondescriptmobile, her attention was glued to a smartphone six inches from her beak rather than to the car stopped six feet from her front bumper . . . ! She looked in time to react, and in so doing she set in motion a series of events that did not need to happen. She pounced on the brakes. Her charming, bouncing granddaughter, who had been frolicking in the back seat— yes, without visible restraint—ping-ponged off the back of the driver's seat and headrest and crumpled unceremoniously to the footwell. Stunned silence was followed by a crying jag. Grandmama showed concern at the girl's predicament, finally putting her phone down and reaching over the seat to calm and reassure the child. Traffic, and she, then started to move again. That's when I shot Gams a look of extraordinary disapproval and shook my head in disgust. Here was I, chastising a wizened sage! I wagged a finger at her and held up my phone to suggest that, had she been paying attention to driving, her passenger would be in better sorts. She got the hint. I got the bird. Had this woman carried more speed when she climbed on the brakes, that little gem of her life could well have launched through the windshield. Then where would that have left Mema? Likely C in court—not because of her dangerous driving behavior, but engaged in civil litigation hurtling blame at all corporations within range. I'm at my wits end, and I don't know what to do about it. Daily I see evidence of the ever-diminishing quality of drivers who inhabit our roads. Did this precipitous decline begin with United States' budget cuts and, with it, driver-education classes? Can this fall be marked by the rise of smarter cars and technology aimed at making our lives easier, hence allowing us to abdicate greater responsibility? Or is it simpler? That, yes, we all believe we must occupy every waking moment with stimulation because, damn it, we are the ADD generation and—oh, my, look at what popped up on my Pinterest board . . . On a recent drive from the East Coast to Detroit, done in just three stops, I didn't once look at my phone. When I got home I had 118 e-mails awaiting me, none of which demanded immediate attention. It makes me wonder how someone else's life can be so important that he must remain attached to his phone. I long for a simpler time, a disconnected time, a time when we used driving as a cathartic salve. You climb into the car, adjust the mirrors and sit high in the seat, crank the ignition and take a big sigh looking toward hitting the open road. Those were the days of TripTik navigation and playing I Spy, and singing “99 bottles of beer on the wall” to pass the time. Those were pre-text, pre-Facebook, pre-e-mail days, when communication often meant you actually had to get into your car and drive to speak face-to-face. Imagine that. —Dutch Mandel T eat breakfast there. Breakfast is also available at the show. If you want to meet at the show, take I70 West to exit 220 (between St. Peters and O'Fallon) Hwy. 79 North. Travel 28 miles to the heart of Elsberry. Turn left at the four-way, travel West on Hwy B, Broadway 4 blocks and the park is on the left. Show people will guide you in from the four-way. Park then register. This a club event for points. he “Classics on Wheels” car show will be held in Elsberry Missouri on October 6th. Club members, Duck and Brigitte Steavenson of our club are working this show. For those wanting to caravan as a group, we will be meeting at the Burger King in St. Peters located at the Mid-Rivers Drive exit and the North Service Road. We will be meeting at 7:45 am and leaving at 8 am SHARP!!! Come early if you plan to D ue to scheduling problems, the November board of directors meeting has been moved to October 24th. As usual, the meeting will be held at Syberg’s on Dorsett Road and will start at 7pm. Spazio’s hopes to be reopened by late October so our target date for returning there for our membership meetings will be November. Until then, we will remain at Russo’s for this month unless we hear otherwise. Our annual Awards Banquet will be held at the Airport Holiday Inn on January 19th. Reservations only and must be accompanied with a check for your party. We will post more details next month. As a reminder for our newer members, there will be no membership meeting in January, as it is replaced with the banquet. My apologies to Gwen Simms and to Don Branson. I spelled Gwen’s name wrong last month and missed Don’s car in the coverage of the St. Anthony’s car show. We are collecting donations and toys for our toy drive to support the Marines in their “Toys for Tots” campaign. Any donations can be brought to a board or membership meeting or you can contact Jim Biermann. The club’s half of the 50-50, starting in September, goes to this worthwhile project. We have a sister club in Spokane, Washington. They are the Inland Northwest Fords Unlimited Car Club. They have a very nice newsletter and website. Yo u can check them out at www.inwfordsunlimited.com Club member, Scott Craig, gets the early bird award for being the first member to pay his 2013 dues. We seem to have some problems with our mail and email delivery. If you know of a member who is not receiving their newsletter please let us know. Also some members are receiving the newsletter both ways, please let me know as you should only be receiving it mail or email.. We seem to still have some bugs in our delivery system. Back in the day, the car show season used to wind up by the end of September. If you noticed on our events page, the season has stretched to late October. I would think that is tempting the weather gods, but the way that our Spring and Summer went, we could have a warm October. For leading our crew from Syberg’s to the Wheels in Motion Car Show, club member, Rich Sutorius received the “Syl Biermann Geographically Challenged” award. At least we didn’t meet him coming back the other way. Our club secretary, Cindy Ahrens, came up with an interesting number from our car show. The rain did keep away many of our regulars, but of the 109 registered cars and trucks at our show 32 were new entrees. Our show chairman, Jim Biermann, has said all along that this could have been one of our largest shows, if not for the rain. Speaking of the car show, with the rainout, it is difficult to make much out of the show classes, so we probably will not be making any changes in the classes for our 2013 show. A date has been set for our 2013 car show. It will be held at McDonnell Park on July 28th, hopefully without rain next year. We have a confirmed date from the St. Louis County Parks Department. How to break into your garage in 6 seconds. This interesting video was submitted by Syl Biermann. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup? v=CMz1tXBVT1s Our 50-50 winner for September was Cindy Ahrens.
