HOA Meeting Wrap-up By Plum Creek HOA Plum Creek’s Annual Membership meeting was held on October 23, 2006 at the PAC. A quorum was met by a combination of residents in attendance (70 homeowners, 45 Proxies) and Benchmark Development (representing 250 lots/votes). Association President David Mahn called the meeting to order, made welcoming comments and introduced Vice-President Peter French who facilitated the meeting. We’ve put together a little synopsis of happenings for those who are interested. First, Peter French went over some of the neighborhood’s 2006 highlights. A few of the major highlights follow. In 2006 Plum Creek was selected as the “New Development” of the year by Envision Central Texas at their inaugural Community Stewardship Awards. Plum www.plumcreektxhoa.com Plum Creek - Kyle, TX Lighting Up Plum Creek - 2006 Edition Beginning the week of December 10th, the PC Landscape Committee will begin judging the holiday lights of Plum Creek. With four categories, everyone has the opportunity to get into the spirit of the season. Our first category is Traditional. Traditional includes the simpler designs of house trimming and lots of greenery. It’s the classic winter wonderland and Christmas of old. Next, we encounter the Religious category, which embraces all major religious holidays. These holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and more. Volume 6, Number 9 December 2006 January 2007 Creek Development contributed 2 million dollars to the partnership that created the Kyle Parkway overpass and 1626 extension. Laura Burleson Negley elementary school opens. Association manager David Brown gave an overview of his responsibilities and covered the financial status of 2005/2006. It was pointed out that current delinquent status was over $65,000 and all residents are encouraged to pay their assessments. After this each committee head (made up of resident volunteers) gave an overview of the past year of activities and the future goals of their Committee and took a few questions from those in attendance. After committee presentations, the nomination committee presented the list of nominees for the open board position, incumbent Dave Mahn and Dennis Perkins. The Negley PTA was formed at the end of last school year by some dedicated and determined parents. The PTA is up and running and has an Executive Board as well as chairpersons for numerous committees. The PTA aspires to involve parents, teachers and community members to better educate the children. The PTA wants say a huge “Thank You” to the much needed community support that has already been given: • • 2 Peter French and David Mahn with Plum Creek Developers (Benchmark Development) donated $500 and pledged an additional $600 of support Jane Terrell with Rocking Horse Academy donated $550 to purchase the safety equipment for the school (pictured) • Rory Buckner, Owner/Manager of the Kyle Domino’s Pizza donated $500 for 5th grade scholarships to the Outdoor Learning Center • Beth Smith, Justice of the Peace in Kyle, gave $100 to purchase additional safety equipment for the school • Larsen’s Black Belt Academy donated $50 of support Thanks to this type of support from these committed community members and businesses, the PTA has enough funds to start off the year in a positive way. A lot of planning and effort has gone into setting up the PTA in order to support the students and staff at Negley. Thank you all that were mentioned here and thank you to those of you not mentioned that have volunteered your precious time. It is greatly appreciated. The first Negley PTA general meeting was held on September 14th at the school. The first PTA catalog fundraiser was held Sept. 29-Oct. 13. Thanks you for supporting all of the kids. Support in the form of monetary donations as well as volunteering is encouraged and very much appreciated. If you have any questions or want to inquire about showing your support for the Negley PTA please contact the PTA President, Nancy Herrington at [email protected]. Please also visit the Negley PTA website at http: //teacherweb.hayscisd.net/web/nespta/. As fate would have it! What is your favorite feature in Plum Creek? Ideal location, with close promixity to 4 Austin, San Marcos and San Antonio. I also like the white fences, parks, and great pools. Hobbies/Interests? I really enjoy doing landscape work. I do most home improvement projects myself. I really enjoy outdoor grilling, and especially like to take care of our grandchildren! They love to come visit us and I always try to set a new standard for spoiling them! Do you have a favorite restaurant or store in Kyle? The Pie Company! Just about as homemade as you can get. What is one thing about you that most people would be surprised to know? I am in a good mood 99.9% of the time! I am happy in life! I feel blessed. December 2006 / January 2007 5 Plum Plum Creek Press A Note From Your Principal By Will Webber Our Community Coming together “It’s hard to imagine a time without them.” This is how most parents feel about their children. Your children become an integral part of the life of the family and it is hard to imagine a time without your children. What was life like then? In a similar way it is hard to imagine a time without Negley Elementary. Our community has pulled together and our school is an integral part of that community. There is so much going on all the time. Veteran’s Day has long been an importance observance for me. I grew up with a father and three uncles who shared tales of their service during ‘the Big One’. I believe it is important to note that the holiday is centered on the cessation of fighting. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month fighting stopped and our soldiers who defended freedom for us all celebrated the end of war – specifically the “Great War”. We have set aside that day to remember the end of that war and to honor all of the soldiers who have defended our freedom throughout the years in times of war and in times of peace. Our PTA Holiday Market was organized to provide a shopping extravaganza for our community. This event reminds me a bit of the world famous Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. I remember the Armadillo World Headquarters of long ago and its holiday offshoot was often a part of my holiday traditions. The PTA works hard to bring our community together to celebrate learning and promote community events. Thank you PTA. Hays CISD has a tradition of serving a Thanksgiving meal during the month of November. The Food Service Department provides a Thanksgiving meal with ‘all the trimmings’ and invites our community to join the students for lunch on those days. This event has grown to a two day celebration due to its popularity. Children’s Book Week celebrates reading and the wonder that books bring to the lives of our children. This year we have had a range of activities throughout the week designed to promote reading for fun, pleasure and information. Reading enriches all of our lives and is a gift we would like for all of our children to enjoy throughout their lives. The Thanksgiving Holidays are past us and Winter Festivities are here again. This is an exciting and busy time of year for us and for our children. It is important to combine the excitement of the season with enthusiasm for learning and activities that help children make connections in every aspect of their lives. Thank you all for being a part of the Negley community of learners. By Anna Madrona With a little advance planning this year you can cut down on the extra chores the holidays always seem to entail, save money, reduce stress, conserve resources, and teach your children good long-term habits for living a little lighter on the earth. Let’s take a look at a few areas where some thoughtfulness and creativity might pay off. Paper: This year think “Reduced, Recycled, Reusable” Are you checking your list twice, or three times to make sure you’re giving your recipients items or experiences they truly want? Do they even want more stuff? Would Junior be happy with just the new bicycle and a few fun stocking stuffers? Would Uncle Joe be thrilled with his favorite nephew treating him to a Spurs game? Hint to the guys: just about any woman over the age of 18 would love a spa treatment or massage gift certificate. Still sending out Christmas cards? Like many of us, don’t you have leftovers from several years squirreled away that can potentially save having to buy a third or fourth box, or indeed, any at all? And when was the last time you updated your Christmas card list? Are you still sending cards to people you haven’t heard from in years? Sending fewer cards saves money, time, and resources. We set expectations with family and loved ones early, and breaking the cycle of expecting more and more by agreeing to cut down on the excess has enormous payoffs for your time, energy, and your children’s sense of entitlement. For those you are sending or handing out at work or school, are you buying recycled cards and/or envelopes? Are you recycling this year’s crop of received cards into postcards or gift tags for next year? If your family is online, there are probably people on your list who would be just as delighted with an e-card containing the latest family photo and your greetings. Do you really need another set of lights for the trees in front of your house? Do you need even more decorations for the tree? Why not save a tank of gas and use the hours diverted from shopping to string cranberries, raisins and popcorn into garlands for your indoor AND outdoor trees. This is a great family activity or a way to keep the kids quiet on a rainy afternoon. Make sure you’ll have a few dry days before stringing the garland outside. Then watch from the window as the tree comes to life with delighted birds and squirrels. When it comes time to take down the tree, leave the garland on your indoor natural tree, and move the tree out into the back yard and prop against the garage or back fence for a few days before recycling. The animals will enjoy the decorations on the “second life” of your tree. Do you really need to buy several rolls of wrapping paper this year? How much time (and money over the long-run) would you save if you used reusable pre-decorated bags and boxes? Are you wrapping over-sized items when a large and colorful bow will suffice? What about gift cards that come in their own designed envelopes or folders? There are dozens of ways to save time, money and resources while keeping gift anticipation alive. Stuff: Take what you need and leave the rest. 8 Power consumption: Timing is everything. Competing with your neighbor for the brightest yard on the block? Remember, smaller bulbs use less energy. And why leave the twinkling lights on all night when no one will see them anyway. A simple, inexpensive timer can be used to illuminate and darken the lights at your chosen hours. Plan your shopping trips carefully. Can you take care of some of your shopping over lunch hours? Do you really need to drive to Austin’s malls every weekend, or can you find suitable items closer to home in Buda, San Marcos, or even our new Southpark Meadows? Every tank of gas you save helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions; sitting in traffic robs you of precious time and energy you could spend otherwise in enjoying the holiday season. What sounds more appealing for eight hours on a Saturday: sitting in a traffic jam on MoPac on your way to Barton Creek Mall, waiting 25 minutes through 8 traffic light signals, the scent of auto exhaust filling your car, having to park 1⁄2 mile from the stores at the farthest reaches of the parking lot, and finding yourself elbow to elbow with thousands of irritable people who’ve experienced the same thing, while combing over picked through merchandise? Or a quick trip south to San Marcos, strolling through the charming downtown shops near the square, lunching at a local café, hitting a few big box stores on the edge of town, returning home and stringing popcorn and cranberries (see above) while listening to your favorite holiday tunes, the scent of the spiced cider warming on the stove wafting through the house? I choose Door # 2! May your holidays be relaxed, thrifty, and light on the earth! *Do you have great ideas you would like to share about de-stressing, saving resources, and spending less during the holidays? Share them on the message board online at www.plumcreektxhoa.com/plumcreek . December 2006 / January 2007 9 Plum Creek Press 10 December 2006 / January 2007 Continued from page 1 asked for nomination from the floor and Meghan Rodgers was nominated and was given the floor to introduce herself. A point of order was raised concerning the collection of ballots prior to the call for vote. Although the point of order was rescinded, the board decided to disqualify the previous ballots, reissue and revote. The election resulted in the re-election of Dave Mahn A motion was made and seconded to expand the board from three to five. However it was pointed out that Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (DCCR’s) state that any motion of this nature must be on the Annual Meeting agenda prior to the meeting. The motion was amended for this to be on the agenda for the 2007 meeting. A motion was made for the HOA financials to be provided to residents homes prior to the meeting and it was decided that the financials will be posted online at the HOA website prior to the meeting. Motions we’re also made to hold the next Annual Meeting on a Saturday and maybe serve BBQ. The motion passed (although the BBQ idea was shelved by residents) and the board took the idea under advisement. A motion was also made for people on the board to be a resident homeowner, and for people on the board to have the home they own in Plum Creek as their primary residency. This motion did not pass. After the motions were closed, and although the meeting was running long, the floor was opened to the residents who had signed up to speak before the meeting. Fifteen residents addressed those in attendance. Concerns were noted. During the course of the five-and-a-half-hour meeting, it was mentioned by the board that the annual meeting isn’t the only time people can air their concerns. Those with ideas or concerns about our neighborhood are invited to contact Property Manager, David Brown ([email protected] om or 512-262-1140) during the year. For the organized folks who like to have the decorations down before New Yearʼs, you will be able to drop your tinsel-free tree at Kyleʼs Gregg-Clarke or Steeplechase Parks starting December 26. The drop point at Gregg-Clarke Park, the closest to Plum Creek, is on Gregg Drive, next to the Post Office. For those of you who enjoy your tree into January, we have the added the option of dropping your trees at Haupt Park in Plum Creek from January 1 to 14. We hope to gather enough trees to chip and use as mulch in Haupt Park. A few whole trees may be used as fish habitat in the lake, too. Our goal is 250 trees! Remove all hooks, tinsel, and decorations from your trees before disposing of them and please do not drop off trees outside the posted dates.
