The Rec Bowl
A staple of Mount Clemens, The Rec Bowl is a
bowling alley, bar, and restaurant. Serving good food
and drinks at a steal of a price and also boasting one
of the largest outdoor patios in the city. They host
poker nights on Mondays, starting February 15th
for all the card sharks out there.
Interestingly enough, back in January when everyone
was buying as many slips they could to win the
Powerball; this establishment was giving away tickets
in advance. Management even went as far as offering
to share $100 million with everyone who shared and
liked the post on Facebook, if the ticket had won.
Better luck next time and as always, may the force
be with you.

Jimmy John’s
grabs naming rights…it’s a home run !
UTICA - Set to open in June 2016, the new stadium for an
independent baseball league in Utica will be called Jimmy John’s
Field.
News broke Tuesday that the sandwich shop had the naming rights
for the stadium that the United Shore Professional Baseball League
will play out of. The three-team league will host players who didn’t
get picked up by minor league teams. According to a report from
the Detroit Free Press, the $12-million project will seat around
4,000 people. It’ll have five penthouse suits, 12 patio suites and a
grandstand.
PAPERMACOMB.COM
The project is being led by Andrew Appleby, the founder of
General Sports and Entertainment. The project is being aided by
about $400,000 in federal brownfield redevelopment money, and
the Utica Downtown Development Authority donated the land,
valued at $600,000.
Otherwise, the sole investor of the project is Appleby, a former
senior vice president of the Detroit Pistons. There will be about 75
games played in the stadium each season.
Jimmy John’s and United Shore have the official naming rights of
the league and stadium.

MACOMB POLITICS
Former state Rep. Derek Miller was sworn in Monday as Macomb
County treasurer — on the same day he resigned his legislative
seat. Miller took the oath of office before a packed courtroom at
the county courthouse by Michigan Supreme Court Justice David
F. Viviano.
Miller, 32, a former assistant prosecutor, was chosen Friday to
succeed Ted Wahby, who died in December.
“I’m announcing that I am stepping aside as the representative of
Michigan’s 28th House District to become the treasurer of Macomb
County,” Miller said in a statement Monday. “I have enjoyed my
time in the Legislature, and I will forever be grateful for the trust
that my constituents put in me. I look forward to serving them —
and all of Macomb County’s residents — in my new role as their
county treasurer.”
Miller’s resignation from the Legislature comes during the
Democrat’s first term representing the 28th District, comprising
the city of Center Line and part of Warren. An election will have
to be scheduled to fill his seat.
Miller in his statement emphasized his focus on county residents.
“Serving the people of my district was always my top priority in
the state House, and serving the people of our county will continue
to be my priority in my new role,” he said.

6 | Volume 2 - Issue 3 | March 2016
Miller was chosen from a pool of three “extremely qualified”
candidates, according to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith.
Other candidates interviewed Friday were longtime Deputy
Treasurer Jerry Moffitt and John Latella, former chief financial
officer and CEO of Garden Fresh Gourmet.
Wahby, 84, served as treasurer for 20 years. As an appointee, Miller
will serve the remainder of the term, which ends Dec. 31.
Miller is the third generation of his family to serve Macomb County
in office. His grandfather, Art Miller, was Warren’s first mayor in
1957. His grandmother, Edna Miller, was the first woman elected
to the position of Macomb County clerk. His father, Art Miller Jr.,
served in the Michigan Senate for 26 years.
Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan
State University and a doctorate from the University of Detroit
Mercy School of Law.

The Tender Land
The Price Is Right Live™
by Aaron Copeland
presented by Michigan Opera Theatre
In partnership with
Macomb Center For The Performing Arts
Center Campus:
Macomb Center for the Performing Arts
Saturday, March 12, 2016 Time: 7.30 PM
The Tender Land is the quintessential American opera composed by
Aaron Copeland, the Dean of American composers. His music is readily
recognizable and speaks of the American landscape. The opera is about
a traditional, humble, rural 1930s family suspicious of outsiders and
their morals. When two worldly drifters arrive seeking work on the Moss
family farm, their daughter Laurie, about to graduate from high school,
falls in love with one of them and is torn between her roots and her desire
to explore the world. In 1971, David DiChiera mounted a major revival
that was conducted by the composer. The March 2016 performances are
based on the MOT production.
Charlotte’s Web

Center Campus:
Macomb Center for the Performing Arts
Charlotte’s Web is a children’s novel by American author E. B. White
and illustrated by Garth Williams; it was published in October 15, 1952,
by Harper & Brothers. The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur
and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is
in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages
praising Wilbur (such as “Some Pig”) in her web in order to persuade the
farmer to let him live.
Written in White’s dry, low-key manner, Charlotte’s Web is considered a
classic of children’s literature, enjoyable to adults as well as children.

In a highly anticipated national tour, three supremely gifted singersongwriters share the stage, joining forces in celebration of American
songwriting that seeks the heart’s core. Grammy-winner Patty Griffin
“digs deep into introspective lyrics…[using] the silence between notes to
create shimmering music you won’t soon forget” (American Songwriter);
Nickel Creek co-founder Sara Watkins creates “a sound that’s gritty and
determined to avoid clichés” (BBC Music); and Anaïs Mitchell is “writing
material that stands comparison with the great singer-songwriters,”
including Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (Daily Telegraph).

HE’S SAFE!
PLAY BALL !
Minor league baseball
is on deck in downtown Utica
Call Andy Appleby the Family Guy, but please don’t confuse him with Seth McFarlane’s R-rated
animated television show of the same name. Appleby is a family man and it shows. He is married
to Kristiana and they have four children.
dog stand. They were handing out hot dogs and water free of charge. All three play baseball. Alex
is a catcher at Parkway Christian. In the summer he plays with the Shelby Chiefs travel team.
Nolan is with the Macomb Cobras and Luc is on the Detroit Metro Stars squad.
The founder of General Sports & Entertainment based in Rochester understands the foundation
of any sports franchise is the family. Maybe dad played ball when he was a kid. Maybe mom
smacked softballs around when she was in high school. The genetics are passed on to the kids. It’s
a gene pool with equal parts DNA, pine tar and neat’s foot oil.
Baseball’s a game of pitchers and batters, hits and runs, RBI and ERA, and memories. All three
Julio brothers had recollections to share Tuesday.
“It was a tie game. The bases were loaded in the bottom of the seventh and I was on third. Lucas
hit a blooper over the head of the pitcher and I scored,” said Nolan.
That clinched a tournament championship, just like the memory that Luc had been waiting in
the batter’s box to share. His team was playing the Blue Jays in a tournament in Roseville. His pal,
Tommy, ripped a line drive hit that allowed Luc to score the winning run.
“We fell in love with minor league baseball,” said Appleby, whose firm once owned the Fort
Wayne Wizards, a Single A minor league team that was part of the San Diego Padres’ farm
system. “It is fun, affordable entertainment.”
Appleby knows love can be expensive. Most recently it has translated into a $12 million
investment into Jimmy Johns Field, a stadium that will be built on Moscone Drive and Auburn
Road, just west of Utica’s downtown. The venture involves General Sports as well as the Utica
Downtown Development Authority, which donated the stadium property, valued at $600,000.
General Sports will lease the site for $1 a year.
“The bottom line is what does it cost and what is the value for a family of four?” continued
Appleby. “Sometimes people who haven’t seen minor league baseball think it’s like the Bad News
Bears. These are fantastic, fantastic players.”
The ballpark will be home to three new teams that will play in a newly formed independent
professional baseball league, the United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL). Each team
will play a 50-game schedule for a total of 75 home games per season. Tickets will start at $6.
That’s less than mom and dad pay at most movie theaters and especially if the outing to see Inside
Out or the Lego Movie included popcorn, frozen cokes and Twizzlers.
The Julio brothers from Shelby Township were at the groundbreaking ceremony. Alex, 16,
Nolan, who is 12, and 11-year-old Luc were there to help their grandpa, Pat Mascar, with his hot
8 | Volume 2 - Issue 3 | March 2016
Alex’s recollection of summer baseball feats had to do with a time when he was on an 11U team.
It was the state tournament hosted by Brighton and his squad barely got past Lake Orion, 6-5,
in the opening game. “We made it tough on ourselves,” said Alex. “We came out flat and had to
play better teams the entire tournament.” His team won five games in all, including against the
Novi Heat in the championship game. “I love baseball. I love the thrill of not knowing what will
happen next. It’s a very mental game,” said Alex, who is a catcher on the Parkway Christian team.
What happens next is that construction will begin on the ballpark and play should be completed
by the 2016 season. The ballpark will seat approximately 4,000 people and include a grandstand,
five dugout suites, five penthouse suites, 12 private patio suites, a grass berm and four picnic
areas. The Shelby Chiefs got an impromptu game in on the site prior to the groundbreaking
ceremony. They are a 12U team that competes in the Macomb Amateur Baseball Federation. It
was just a fun game and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel was the pitcher.
“The thing I like about the idea of minor league baseball is that it is affordable,” said Chris Fox,
an assistant coach for the Chiefs whose son, Jackson, plays centerfield on the team. “It’s not going
to be $100 a day to take a family to a game. The idea of a picnic area sounds great.” Season tickets
are available and can be purchased by contacting Josh Hartman of General Sports at (248) 6012200 or email [email protected].

RAISE THE BAR
In 1946 Truman was president, the War was over and Frank and Josephine
Sgroi, a young couple from Sicily, decided to move to the United States.
After settling initially in Detroit, they moved to Macomb County and
began the first of many businesses serving and entertaining a community
they’d grow to appreciate and one that would love them back too.
They started with Carmen’s, a pizza and party store, which opened first in
Detroit and then in the 1970s, as the population moved north they opened
their first location in Warren. While building the business, they also raised
a large family of seven children: Vincent, Tony, Joseph, Fran, Angie, Angelo
and Frank, who would grow up to work with them in future enterprises.
During the 70s, bowling alleys and discos were also popular, and son Joe
helped to open one of each. Carmen’s East, and the Liberty Bowl continued
the family’s success and growth in the community. As audience interests
changed a few short years later, the next move was to open The Ritz Main
Act, which featured many Michigan artists including Aretha Franklin, and
others who would become national stars including Kid Rock and Usher.
In the 1990s, country line dancing was big and so was another venture
for Joe and family; their Hoover Road House became one of the biggest
country dance clubs in America. Currently, Joe combines several of their
popular businesses within the Premier Complex, Chesterfield which features
bowling, a restaurant, club and a banquet facility. The venue is also available
and popular in the area for charity events for groups of all sizes.
How does one family accomplish so much? According to Fran, another of
the seven siblings who helped manage several locations, “things were always
very busy, but having good people working for you made life a lot easier”.
Joe and Fran are also appreciative of the large community of loyal customers
they have served over the years, many who have followed them from venue
to venue.
Two nephews also keep things going for the next generation as one works
at Premier and another owns two Dooley’s restaurants with plans to open
Wild Woody’s in Shelby Twp. in the near future. Why continue in Macomb
County and not open somewhere else? Frank summed it up this way, “Your
home is your home.” Clearly, his family, their friends and long-time patrons
agree.

MACOMB MUSIC
Jim Freeman
King of Raunch
Think what you will about the raw, deliberately offensive nature of his
act, Jim Freeman--The King of Raunch & Roll--has become a veritable
cultural fixture in the Detroit area. He has endured.
Here’s a guy who, for nearly four decades, has played, thrived and
survived in Detroit’s gritty working-class bars. All around town, but
mainly on the east side, there are numerous hard-core Freeman fans who
try to catch him every year or two, confident he’ll still be there, just like
the Edison smokestacks or something. They saw him in the early ‘70s,
doing his rock routine at Dirty Helen’s downtown. They’ve followed him
around to a dozen bars since Freeman tends to stick in a place a year or
so before moving on. He’s been to Chicago, Toledo, Las Vegas and more,
but he always comes back. This is his town, his turf, his material.
Like other long-time local entertainment Freeman stands pre-eminent.
There’s simply no other act around town quite like his. For better or
worse, the guy’s unique.

The sandwich is made on one-inch thick, grilled Russian rye bread
specially baked for the restaurant. Inside is a half pound of warm Corned
Beef topped with melted Swiss cheese and served with your choice of
Thousand Island dressing, horseradish, or hot mustard and a side of
pickles. It is also offered as a Reuben (with sauerkraur) or Dinty Moore
(with coleslaw).
Many years ago, over Owner Duke Nicoli spent time with personal
friends the O,Hara family and learned their Corned Beef recipe. he put
his own twist on in and began serving it at Jimmy’s Dee’s.
“We use a cut of beef that is exclusive to Jimmy Dee’s . Traditionally,
restaurant use a brisker, which is more grainy and farry. Our Corned
Beef is the leanest around,” said Nicolai. “We cook our beef froom open
to close so it’s always fresh. Many restaurant buy precooked and presliced which can taste overly processed.”
Other signature mmenu items are the Corned Beef Soup, Crawfish
Etouffec, hand dipped and dusted Perch and Icelandic Cod Fish Fry on
Friday nights, and slow cooked, honey lager fall-offpthe-bone Baby Back
Ribs. Two daily specials offered Monday through Friday are specially
priced and include a soup or salad.
It is Jimmy Dee’s high quality of food that has kept their dedicated
customer base comingback. “Anyone can por a beer. It will taste the
same anywhere. Our food is what we stake our reputation on. We treat
our customers honestly and fairly. We serve huge portions at a fair price.

The smell of fresh, homemade bread wafts from the kitchen, followed
by the sweet sounds of The Beatles pouring from the speakers, greeting you at the door.
“As the youngest of five brothers and sisters, I shared their passion for
The Beatles in the 70s, and now, I am able to combine both of my
passions in my career -- good food and good music,” said chef Bob
Halaas.
Halaas, a veteran of the U.S. Army’s food service program, is no rookie
to the restaurant business. He and his wife, Tonia, owned a breakfast
and lunch diner in Chesterfield Township for 11 years before selling
it to new ownership. It was appropriately named Strawberry Fields.

Fun, Food and All Things Irish in Fraser
How do you turn a relatively simple idea into a hugely successful one? If you’re on the east side of Macomb County, you can ask Anthony Jekielekbecause he’s done it. Several years ago, he just thought it would be fun to host a St Patrick’s Day party at his Vintage House location in Fraser. He
knew he already had one important element ready to go- a popular, classic recipe for corned beef sandwiches. From there he brought in a couple of
bands, a tent and offered drinks for a fair price. Jekielek says their goal has always been to be a place “where people can have a good time and not go
broke doing it.”
Seven years later, the philosophy is still going strong as three to five thousand people from all over Metro Detroit are expected to join in the festivities
again this year. In fact, that initial simple idea has grown into the biggest indoor/outdoor St. Patrick’s Day party in the area. For 2016, along with
serving up hundreds of pounds of famous corned beef, organizers have added more bands and DJs, a live radio broadcast, basketball contests and big
screen TVs following March Madness. Whether you want to celebrate top o’ the morning or shamrocks at sundown, you can find your bit o’the Irish
at Vintage House.

you. This will bring in growth as
