In last month’s issue (Oct. 2012) we reviewed the 110th Anniversary 2013
Harley-Davidson Road King. While we took a “minimalist” approach in
the overall read and style of the piece, we were also informed that we got a
few details wrong, or at least we kinda “blew by” them…we got 98% of the
review right, were overall very complimentary of the ride and it’s accouterments and features, but missed things like the tank badge material (gold, not
bronze), the fact that standard RK’s (not Classics) always have the hard bags
(duh) and we said, “this seems to be the only color available” (well, yeah,
it’s the anniversary paint scheme). So while these were little, niggling things,
we do apologize and will strive for absolute perfection in the future!! CD
“I took this picture of my bike at the Badlands while we were up at
the Sturgis rally this year and after a whole lot of ribbing from my
buddies, they talked me into to sending it to you guys. We rode all
the way up and back so their point was ‘after the beating you took on
that thing you need to send that pic in’. Anyway here it is, hope you like it.” David R. Vasquez

The idea for a toy run in Tijuana
came about in Playas de Tijuana on a
warm summer day when two veteran
Solo Angels were watching a Little
League baseball game for a team we
had purchased the uniforms for. One
grizzled fan said to the other “You
know, we should get these kids to give
some poor kids a gift from us. You
know like some family from the Barrio
who we know for sure can’t afford
to get nothing for their kids. Like a
Christmas present or something.” His
friend replied “Well what about some
orphans? They could use some gifts
for sure.” And so the germ of the idea
was formed. Later at church they brought the idea
up to the members. Although our
club was founded under a different
president, Suzuki had been in control
of things for many years. When he
was approached, he liked the idea.
Since he was well respected in the
community and had good connections,
he began putting out feelers in Tijuana
to see what was possible to be done.
At the time, there were about 25 or so
members and they voted unanimously
to help a local orphanage that is close
to our clubhouse.
And so began the 1st Tijuana Toy Run.
It was decided to have it on the third
Sunday of the month because the 2nd
Sunday is the day of the Virgin Mary
and that wouldn’t be right. Christmas
itself could fall on the fourth Sunday
or even be before. The year was 1985.
Through the years it has grown into
the huge event that it became. Some
years we drew over 10,000 bikes, each
bringing a gift for a child in need.
Our pride is that we created the 1st
international Biker event. Since9/11/2001, our numbers have
been hurt. It was attended by fewer
bikers because of a new policy by the
U.S. Government that required all
returning citizens to have a passport.
The violence reported in the U.S. press
and media also made people afraid
to cross the border. The truth is that
the drug war between the Cartels and
the Police doesn’t really involve the
regular person, be it citizen or visitor.
But to convince our guests that they
are safe has been a big task. Putting on
an event of this magnitude requires a
8
NOVEMBER 2012
NOVEMBER 2012
huge amount of planning, permits and
co-operation. We Solo Angels decided
to do everything in our power to make
the ride safer for our guests.
The 1st thing we did was to enlist the
help of the police on both sides of the
border. Their presence and support
go a long way to calm people’s fears
of something happening to ruin their
day. We got a parade permit to ride
as a group from the Harley dealership
to the border with local motorcycle
cops and sheriffs as escorts. We got
the Bureau of Tourism in Tijuana to
convince the Mexican Border Patrol
to let us pass as a group without being
inspected. We also hire Mexican police
to meet us at the border and lead us
into Tijuana blocking the traffic again
with a parade permit from Mexico.
This way we can all arrive together on
Calle Revolucion to the applause of
the families who have been waiting in
line for a ticket to win one of the 200
bicycles we raffle off while we present
the toys. The main street of town is
closed to all traffic other than ourselves
and our guests from 1st St. to 10th. We
have 5 stages set up with lines of needy
children patiently awaiting our arrival.
These platforms are guarded by police
and Solo Angeles members.
As a final touch we began offering
all U.S. riders an escort back to
the border and struck a deal with
Homeland Security and the Border
Patrol that for this weekend riders
without passports can return home
with only their Birth Certificates
and a picture ID. Anyone who
comes up to any of the stages and
asks to be escorted to the U.S. will
be individually or as a group taken
by the shortest possible route by our
members. We offer Music, food and
fun for all. All motorcycles and classic
cars are invited and will be welcomed.
“La Caravana de Felicidad” is a day of
peace and non-violence and all clubs
are invited. Please come and join us
and see a child’s smile as a Solo Angel
hands him or her the present that you
brought. All attendees are invited
to a carne asada at the clubhouse
afterwards and will be escorted from
there as well. Let’s make 2012 the
biggest and best Tijuana Toy Run
in our history. Join us at San Diego
Harley for the start of our 27th Tijuana
Toy Run on December 16th..........

What are the perfect ingredients
for a fantastic biker event in
September? Well if it includes sun
drenched days and warm moonlit
nights that are outstanding for
riding, dozens of vendors with
cool items for sale, and tons of
cool events to see and partake in,
plus about 30,000 plus other bikers
to share it with, then yeah I’d say
Las Vegas BikeFest 2012 had what
it takes and more! Whoa, did I
mention, live music daily, free
concerts every night, and so many
parties than even us locals couldn’t
make em all?!
Bikes start rolling into Sin City
early in the week, it’s not as though
you have to twist someone’s are to
get them to come to Vegas. After
all Las Vegas surpassed Disney
World as the number one tourist
destination to visit.
The BikeFest as it’s known to locals
is an annual event that draws riders
of all shapes and sizes from all
points, as far as Vancouver, B.C.
all the way to New York City. We
were lucky to meet and talk with
bikers from Indiana, Mexico, So
Cal, Kentucky, Ohio, in fact just
about everywhere. The mix of
riders made the event even more
fun, ya never knew who you were
going to talk to next.
Joe and Sue from Indiana were
first timers to the BikeFest. “This
is amazing, we don’t have anything
like this where we are from, I’m
working on a custom chopper
and they have everything I need,
I just wished I had ridden out
here, but we’ll be back next year
for sure,” said Joe. Thursday was
opening day and although the
crowds were a bit light at first, as
darkness grew, so did the crowds.
Bikers were treated to hot music of
Frankie Perez and the Truth while
chowing down on food supplied
by the Harley-Davidson Café. The
blend of great food and music and
10
average Joes’ bikes, we still had
the professional custom designed
bike show to get to, how cool is
that, custom bikes on the outside
and on the inside, surrounded by
these bikes was like being a kid
in a candy store, except the candy
was way more expensive now.
We missed out on the World’s
Strongest Biker Competition, but
heard it was a killer, with buffed out
bikers having to lift beer kegs and
massive truck tire over a distance.
Now keep in mind that there were
also Poker runs and Poker walks
going on throughout the event, we
simply couldn’t attend every event
BikeFest has to offer. But then
again that’s the cool thing about
this event and Vegas, you have so
many options, the choice is up to
you as to how much you want to
take in or kick back and relax.
That mentioned, Harley-Davidson
Café had their Hog Out, I
should be clear, Hog Out Eating
Competition. The goal was to
eat as much hog (pulled pork
sandwiches) in 2 minutes - like I
said, something for everyone.
Security was ever present, but not
to the point of being a buzz kill,
as were the Metro PD, considering
the mishaps at other biker events,
the cops had a presence, but it
was pretty low key, when I asked
Vancouver, B.C. couple Kenny
and Eva, who took a 4 week ride
to come to Las Vegas, they felt
very safe, although they had heard
stories of some events getting out
of hand, BikeFest is not known for
that.
My new Canadian friends were
in the audience at the Cashman
Theater to do as we were doing and
catch the Mr. Las Vegas BikeFest
Competition and the following
Bikini Contest. So ya know we
had to be upfront to catch both of
these, yeah it was bright and sunny
outside, but something told us, we
had to see these shows…we were
so right!
The M/C or in this case the
Mistress of Ceremonies was radio
host Stephanie Mackenzie of
97.1 The Point radio. We didn’t
know what to expect, and had no
set expectations, which made for
some real fun. With a thousand
bucks on the line, we were pretty
sure that these guys would have to
be in super shape and biker cool to
win. There were a few stages of the
competition, that was judged by a
panel of preselected women and
these 6 guys went through some
hilarious situations to bring it
down to 3 finalist. The winner was
former Chippendale’s male dancer
who went by Rob.
meeting old and new biker friends
made for a great opening night.
By far the longest line was for,
you guessed it, the beer. Everyone
maintained and there were no
signs of problems, just bikers
letting loose and having a fantastic
night getting pumped up for
Fridays events.
Friday found Cashman Center
and Vendor Village packed with
riders who had to buy, see or try
this or that. Victory was on hand
with its entire new fleet for test
rides, which seemed to get a great
response with the wait being as
long as 30 minutes at times. During
the days there was a bikini bike
wash at the main bike lot, nothing
really better than hot girls in wet
bikinis shinning up your ride. Back
down inside Cashman Center you
could catch a boxing demo, hosted
by Vegas promoter Jimmy Zito,
brother of Chuck Zito who wrote
“Street Justice” about his 25 years
as a Hells Angel and star of HBO’s
hit show Oz.
Heading back outside and we
were able to get up front with the
Stunt Bike display, let me tell you,
these cats are krazy. They take skill
riding to a whole new level, and
they technique they showed to
the hundreds who watched, drew
round after round of applause.
Hey I’ve forgotten to put my own
kickstand down, so these guys
taught me a thing or two. A couple
hundred bikers took off for the 1st
Annual Charity Strip Ride, but
kept their clothes on, and they
drove the Las Vegas Strip!
Of course one of the largest draws
was the custom bike display,
with just about every style and
customization you could imagine,
paint jobs that went from simple
to the outrageous. And enough
chrome and billet accessories, to
build your own space shuttle. It
was a cool way for attendees to
get up close and personal not only
with the bikes, but the owners too.
Not to be confusing, but these were

NOVEMBER 2012
Now we gotta tell ya in the interest
of good reporting, the audience
didn’t take well to this win, many
hoots and catcalls, and other lively
words were tossed towards to the
judges. The audience felt that one
of the other top 3 should have
won, but who am I to say.
Hey we were ready to see the
bikini contest, so we courageously
moved forward. Next up was the
long awaited bikini competition,
no here’s the rub, they only had a
chance to win $500 for 1st place,
but the guys got a grand, hmm,
couldn’t quite figure that one out.
We had fewer ladies than in the
men’s completion, with 5 total,
and that made for a pretty quick
contest. The ladies would strut the
stage and were requiring them to
take a pose on an awesome tricked
out HD Street Glide that was on
stage. Some of these girls made
that pose work for them that’s for
sure. One young lady was also a
custom bike builder, so she truly
had motorcycles in veins, and she
was built like a custom design too.
This time the panel of male judges
was in line with the audience’s
choice and our winner was Ms.
Jackie Savage, who had recently
migrated to Vegas from Chi-Town.
Her bright smile, poise and killer
figure landed her the $500 first
prize.
With over 300 plus people in the
audience, it was a great turn out for
late in the afternoon, looking at our
clocks we knew we had to run to
Harley-Davidson of Las Vegas…
East Side! Yep it was our duty to
check up on and watch the wet
t-shirt contest. First off, we were
just lucky enough to get a parking
spot in the boonies. With over 1500
people in the audience eagerly
waiting to see what this contest
would conjure up, it was tough to
even move around. We wormed
our way through the crowds pretty
well, my 15 years as a club bouncer
came in handy to cut through the
packs of bikers. Allie and I made it
to the stage and she took the prime
camera position, well right on the
stage in the center! She wasn’t
gonna be denied a great photo op
for our readers. This contest started
with 5 ladies, all in bikini bottoms
and tight white t-shirts. It quickly
dropped to 4 and then to the final
three. We immediately recognized
one of the leaders from the bikini
contest just a little bit before,
local Vegas promo girl Christina
Falco, who came in third in the
bikini contest. The audience was
into a frenzy and the final three
were working them up even more,
then add some more bottles of
11
cold water and yahtzee, we have a
winner, none other than our new pal
Christina. She became an instant
super star with dozens trying to take
photos with, or of her. The crowd
thinned pretty fast, most returning
to their bikes to head for dinner. By
now means was the night even close
to over.
After fueling up on some of mamas
home cooking, and gassing up
my sled, I took my 113 cubic inch
motor back down the freeway to
the after party at Hogs N Heifers.
Fortunately my press pass got me
some up front parking, cuz even
locals had no place to park, it was
packed to the gills with every biker
combo you can imagine. For you
folks that haven’t been here before,
it’s a wild joint, they have a no
colors rule at the door, but are cool
with soft colors.
The owner began her concept in of
all places New York City, and its
understood that it was the basis for
the movie Coyote Ugly and then the
chain that followed. The bartenders
dance on the bar, and encourage
ladies in attendance to toss their
bras up to be added to a huge
memorial if you would of hundreds
of other bras. The bartenders and
waitress are very scantily clad in a
sort of western-wear booty chaps
and constantly screaming into a
bullhorn to encourage you to drink
up and have some more. The music
is usually a cross between country,
classic rock and heavy metal, can
you say built for bikers? The inside
of the bar was packed to rafters,
and the outside just as much action,
since they had a full service bar set
up outside too.
The entire street was wall to wall
bikes, with plenty of security and
more than enough Metro units on
hand. I didn’t see anyone get out
of hand, and while some got pretty
hammered, they all kept the cool in
cool biker. It got fun going through
the crowd to see where folks came
from and what their thoughts were
on the event. I caught up with a
group we met early in the day from
the Gold Coast Wheelers, who
made the trip down for their 3rd time
to BikeFest, all the way from San
Luis Obispo, CA. A real nice group
of friendly and outgoing bikers, I
broke away from these cats to head
over and talk with a group of lady
riders from San Diego, CA going
by the ominous patch name of the
Graveyard Gamblers. Psycho Terry,
the clubs President, told me it was
their first time out for the Bikefest
and they were having a ball, they
had a great ride up from SD and said
they’ve been treated with respect
and open arms from everyone.
I had an early day so it was time to
12

hit the road and turn in, Saturday
was coming quick and we still
had to be ready for the Artistry in
Iron Master Builders Competition.
Saturday came to fast for us, we had
a few hours sleep, which is a lot by
Vegas standards. We headed to meet
Cheryl Warren and Ed Orgy from
Quick Throttle, who was presenting
the Quick Throttle Award to Best
in Show. With the judging going
on over a couple of days, and so
many hip bikes to review, we didn’t
envy these judges for their tough
decisions that followed. After
strolling around we couldn’t settle
on any one bike, each had their own
distinct character and style. But the
folks from The Las Vegas Bike Fest
began to announce the winners, and
in the category of Editor’s Choice
the winner was Shaun Ruddy
Chop de Ville Cycles based in Las
Vegas. His classic truly old school
bike, based off of a wooden track
bike circa 1920. His bike had clean
line, no frills, just a real fantastic
attention to detail and it stood out
easily from the pack. Shaun said
he was inspired by the history and
the danger those old timers went
through and wanted to pay homage
to them.
He was presented our Editor’s
Choice Award by our Vegas rep
Cheryl and the crowd and his peers
gave a huge round of applause. We
headed back to the vendors area and
got our eye caught on a blinged out
bike, and I mean bling, the creation
of Stacy at Devas Bling, this bike
was like something that Liberace
had in his garage, it was very well
done, and an eye catcher for sure,
they say they can bling out most
anything with Swarovski crystals,
while it’s not my style, Allie was
digging it and the booth was packed
with like minded women riders.
While we were reporting on these
things, there was a $10,000 poker
run, the baddest bagger competition
and hot rod car display going on,
like I mentioned, something for
everyone and always something
going on. We ended our day at the
tattoo competition, were they had
every imaginable tattoo rendering,
enough to make even the most salty
sailor jealous.
All in all we had a wicked time,
meeting some very cool bikers
from all around, seeing some
craftsmanship that makes any riders
mouth water and just the basking in
the camaraderie that comes from
well run bike events like this. If
you haven’t made it out here to Sin
City for this event, then snap out
of your coma and make plans, you
won’t regret it, the runs, the bikes,
the climate, the parties…it’s Vegas
Baby!

Story: Gary Koz Mraz Photos: Ron Sinoy
It’s been a wild ride for Corey Miller, a California
man playing in bands, tattooing and riding
motorcycles … all by the age of 15. A self-taught
artist, Corey climbed the ranks of street tattooer
to start tattooing professionally at the age of 20.
In 1987 at Fat George’s Tattoo gallery, in La
Puente, Ca. He then worked among the incredible
legendary artists of Good Time Charlie’s
Tattooland in Anaheim, Ca. Corey now has his
own shop Six Feet Under Tattoo Parlor in Upland
Ca. After being part of the wildly successful
reality TV series “L.A. Ink,” Corey’s reality over
the last 6 months has been cathartic. These days,
we find a post-L.A. Ink-Miller very excited to lend
his artistic talents to everything from album covers
to a new bottle design for Tuaca. Corey’s drawing
of Travis Barker is on the cover of a recent issue of
Modern Drummer and he is now experimenting
with the new (to him) technique of wood burning
on a custom guitar for Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx.
I had the opportunity to spend the day with Corey
and his family. We talked about motorcycles, his
artistic mind sees the world in broad brushstrokes
connected together by the smallest detail and that
no topic is singular. All things are woven together
with the fabric that is art.
Corey had the San Gabriel Mountains in his
backyard and been riding them since he was a
kid. His first bike was a 1978 Yamaha YX80. At
20, he wanted a chopper and spent several days
in what he called a really scary house with very
bad characters doing bad things. “That would
have cured any normal person from a career in
tattooing, but a couple grand and a lot of tattoos
later, I rode away with my first Harley,” Corey
says. “It was a ‘57 rigid Frankenstein with a
‘73 shovelhead, bad welds, rusted parts, straight
pipes, no turning signals or speedo. Each side
of the Fatbob tanks was even different colors. I
remember sitting at a stoplight thinking how
16
badass I was and a cop pulled up behind me. The
light went green and I made some lame hand
signal and my helmet flew right off my head and
bounced down the intersection. I saw the cop
looking at me just shaking his head and laughing
at my stupid ass as he drove away. That was the
beginning of riding choppers… it was awesome.”
While at a bike show in the early 2000’s, Corey
eyeballed the Jesse James “Diablo” chopper and
voiced his honest opinion while, unbeknownst to
him, Jesse was right next to him. “Jesse must have
found it refreshing,” Corey reminisces, “because
he was always very respectful of me and really
liked my art. I ended up tattooing the infamous
hundred-dollar bill on his back. I called it his
family crest. I traded Jesse for a CFL frame and
some West Coast Choppers parts to start building
my own bike. I traded another local builder,
Hellbound Steel, for a huge Dragon painting for
the front end and wheels, I did a few shirt designs
for Ron Simms for some P.M. parts, and then
went back and traded Jesse some more artwork
for a tank and rear fender. I remember picking
those up from Jesse, and in his usual bravado was
all ‘I actually hand pounded that tank and rear
fender.’ I thought “So what, dude? That’s what
you do,” but I was naive because Jesse was really
blowing up. The next time I saw him he had a
factory of workers and told me that was one of
the last tanks he hand pounded... I finally pulled
everything together and met Mike Lambertson
here in Ontario. He is an awesome pinstriper.
I had drawn out the image and he nailed it gold
leaf and all. I bartered almost everything on this
bike for tattooing or artwork except the S&S 113
motor. It’s not a WCC bike; I pulled together all
the elements I wanted for a Corey Miller original.”
This bike was completed in 2005 and this is the
first time his chopper has ever been featured in
print.
Before the show L.A. Ink, Corey was always
very private, keeping his personal life out of the
limelight. Corey is a family man with three young
children and lovely wife Kat. He has always
prioritized family, and then came Dev… a new
son - a new 25-year old son. They met for the first
time only months ago. It started with a private
message on Facebook from a girl he had met 25
years ago, and her last sentence said that she had
his son. Corey immediately tracked him down
and they met. In one of their first meetings with
his newfound son, Corey asked, “So now what we
do?” Dev’s response, “I was hoping we might go
for a motorcycle ride,” and that’s just what they
did.
That’s what we all did too; we saddled up and
went for a ride in the San Gabriel’s, Corey on his
Husaberg, Dev on his Yamaha 800 and me on
a Triumph Rocket III. The two interacted as if
they had known each other their whole lives. We
owned the road that Wednesday afternoon. As
we rode I thought about ‘Nature vs. Nurture,’ that
motorcycling isn’t something everyone just does.
In fact, only a small fraction of us actually have an
M1. Watching them talk about riding, about bikes
and music, and finishing each other’s sentences
was uncanny. Nature and genetics had definitely
overruled nurturing.
Corey on LA Ink: “Look man I do what I do, I
never had an agent, manager for all those years,
and I suppose I should have but I was just a tattoo
artist. I had no idea about television. . I just stayed
totally focused on the detail of each customers
tattoo and always tried to be true to myself...I
remember in the opening credits of the show,
they wanted me to wear a Marlon Brando “Wild
One” hat. I said” No way” you guys want me to
look like the Village People? (laughs) Sometimes
that show became an artistic distraction, but
it was great exposure for me and for tattooing
itself. Aside from some cool licensing deals and
notoriety, the best thing that ever came from
that show was finding my son Dev. There’s no
reality show actor’s union, SAG, no royalties, no
NOVEMBER 2012
residuals, just exposure.”
Corey on Family Matters: “Having kids totally
changed me. I suddenly became concerned about
lasting, about being around to see them grown. I
grew up with the punk rock music scene of the
early 80’s, and lasting wasn’t a priority to me. I
never saw my son Dev grow up, and he never
knew about me either. Ironically, he’s just like me.
He’s a musician, artist and motorcyclist.” (Dev
sings for the L.A. based band MOMENTEM)
What Corey really rides: “I grew up right here at
the foothills of the San Gabriel’s. I love riding
the mountain roads and trails. I rode my Harley
to L.A. Ink and what a freakin’ nightmare.
You almost die ten times a day in that traffic. I
recently bought a Husaberg 570 Super Motar from
Malcolm Smith in Riverside and I love the thing.
It’s ugly bright blue and yellow but at 240 pounds
it rides itself through these mountains.”
Corey’s Band: ‘Powerflex 5’ includes Steve Alba,
the legendary skate boarder who plays guitar and
Corey plays drums. “Its instrumental surf-punk,
rock electric gumbo if you will. I always tell people
it’s kind of like a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack,
it’s just fun good time music,” Corey beams.
Tattooing Today: His shop “Six Feet Under” has
been in the same location in Upland for 15 years.
“We get customers from every walk of life. Just as
the popularity of tattooing has grown, so has the
number of amazing talented artists. People aren’t
afraid of walking into a Tattoo shop anymore
and I guess you can thank shows like L.A. Ink for
helping with that.”
Corey’s art is currently on the cover of Modern
Drummer, he just finished an album cover work
for Face to Face, designed a guitar for James
Hetfield and a signature drum set for Ludwig
Drums. He is featured in the upcoming motion
NOVEMBER 2012
picture documentary Tattoo Nation,
which will hit the theaters in 2013. His
shop Six Feet Under is teeming with
activity. He hosts art shows and is involved
in his community.
Tattoos, motorcycles, music
and art are at the core of
Corey Miller. Art is a very
personal; people don’t buy
art they hate to put in their
living room and look at
every day. At least you can
change that, because putting
art on your body for life is
the ultimate commitment,
and the artist you pick to do
that is critical. Its obvious
Corey Miller is art driven,
putting his heart into his
work and his family.

This year’s LA Calendar Motorcycle Show made another
strategic move to outwit the current economy and still
provide a nice event setting to showcase some beautiful
bikes. Moved away altogether from the Long Beach setting,
to the Calabasas Inn, the show & builder competition again
attracted international entries.
The Calendar Show broadened its focus this year to include
the growing collector bike market with exhibitors and bike
show classes for classic European, British and Japanese
motorcycles, along with American V-Twins and Customs.
Overall the focus was street bikes taken to the extreme as a
functional art form, with builders rewarded by a vote of the
expert judges for their vision put into reality. And again,
a Japanese entry made a big splash as this year’s Best of
Show was awarded to Hoshikawa Hideki with his modified
Sportster ‘Asterisk’.
Plenty of room to relax on the Calabasas Inn grass park
location offered vendor displays, band stages, seating, trees,
shade & green grass, dining tables , gourmet food and
beverage trucks, a creek and duck pond and a huge manmade waterfall, plus an air-conditioned banquet hall which
also had vendors and permanent restroom facilities. While
most of the builders’ competition bikes were outside, the
banquet hall was the setting for the Sportbike Class in the
competition.
Along with the vendors and displays, visitors could test their
bike’s performance on the Motorcycle Machine Dyno, a yearly
feature activity at the show, and enjoy Calendar Girl Music
live performances featuring the Japanese girl rock band Nylon
Pink, and singer songwriters Rachel McGoye and Marina V.
As always the Show marks the world premier of next year’s
new 2013 FastDates.com Motorcycle Pin-Up Calendars
photographed by Calendar Show producer Jim Gianatsis.
The Calendars include Fast Dates World Superbike and
Moto-GP road-race bikes, Iron & Lace Custom Motorcycles,
and Garage Girls Hard at Work, hosted by beautiful
Calendar Kittens and SBK World Superbike grid girls.
Of interest this year also were two really neat Ducati’s on
display that Chris Redpath/MotoGP Werks had just built for
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, one a naked MotoGP Ducati
Desmosedici Streetfighter valued at over $100,000, and the
other an old Ducati Bevel-Drive 750 custom Cafe Bike. And
ex-Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke dropped in to check
out the bikes, pausing for a photo with Cro Customs’ 1956
H-D Custom FL Panhead.
Here are the final results for 2012 LA Calendar Show, and
Congratulations to all the winners!

E
ver thought of getting out on the
road and just wanting to take
some twisting turns so smoothly
and easily that is just makes you smile
from ear to ear once you reach the
bottom of the hill? Well… Man, do we
have some wheels for you.
Back in 2004, Triumph Motorcycles
launched the Thruxton 900. It was
named after the famous Thruxton racing
circuit where Triumph won the first
three places in the Thruxton 500 mile
endurance race in 1969, establishing
the “Café Racer” era where standard
production motorcycles were modified
to improve racing performance. Well,
here it is 9 years later, 2013 and I can
tell you, this bike is just as hot as it was
then.
I have recently started racing in the
AHRMA Thruxton Cup Challenge
event this year and when I was asked to
test ride the new 2013 Thruxton Model,
I dove at the opportunity.
The biggest and really most distinct change in the 2013 model from
previous years models is the new color. Triumph has this color
“Brooklands Green”. A great throw back color similar to “British
Racing Green”. It also has the accompaniment of gold racing
stripes. This bike has not really needed any major changes as it’s
set up so well year after year - why change something if you have
something that’s already a great product?
Of course with the “Café Racer” style of bike you are going to get
a more race set up and vibe to the seating and overall feeling when
you jam this bike on the road! Your feet are a little more tucked
back, giving you that fun, aerodynamic flow with the shape of the
bike. The bars are angled back and sloped down to groove you into
this bike. The foot pegs are tucked in really nicely and still not too
far back so you can do some long distance rides if you really want
to take this bike far! The single, old school headlight bucket really
helps add to the nostalgia that this bike represents. The old school
teardrop shape very “OLD SCHOOL” tank really is a key throwback
to the original bikes design. The suspension is really smooth and has
just enough give and go when you need it for turning and stopping
effortlessly. The speedometer dives back to the whole retro vibe of
this bike. 2 circular gauges old schooled out with white backdrops.
The digital trip meter, time, and odometer are really easy to read.
The tachometer helps keep those corner busting revs. right where
you need them to be. The stock bar end mirrors really help changing
lanes a breeze and still give that race-retro feel. Although this bike
does not have the “CLIP ON” bars that the earlier Thruxton Models
had from 2004-2008, it still has a good, low, racer handle position.
The stock exhaust although very quiet, really helps keep the cool,
throw back vibe.
This 865 cc motor really is solid and packs a punch, right outta the
box. These Triumph motors really are solid. I own a 2005 Triumph
Bonneville that I have put over 87,000 miles on without a single
issue, other then normal maintenance! This bike also weights in a
decent 500 lbs, making it really easy to throw around when you need
to. The gas tank holds 4.2 gallons and will get you about 46 miles to
the gallon. It comes stock with a removable seat cowl for picking up
that second passenger.
The suspension on the bike really is really set smooth and gives you
a bit of front and rear adjustment. The levers has a decent amount
of adjustment to get the distance from the bar ends just where you
need them to be. The single disc brake in the front gives a damm
good hold when you need to gear down before a quick corner turn.
The polished engine covers, spoked aluminum wheels and sleek seat
cowl are really a Thruxton signature. Throttle that baby when you
want to get up and going, she is not the fastest bike on the street, but
man, the looks and compliments you get will be way worth it! Most
people were asking me, “Hey man, what year is that bike, I used to
own one of those back in the day…”. It happened almost everyday I
was on this bike. It’s a great, affordable, fun, quick, responsive bike
that is well worth a serious look. If you have been contemplating a
new fun bike to zip around the canyons on, this might be the one.
Time to dig into those turns! Café Style.

This year was the 9th Annual run and as always,
one of my more favorite local Arizona runs. The weather
was perfect after enduring a brutal summer then locally heavy
monsoon rains, we finally got a break with fantastic riding
weather.
As with most local runs it was short and to the point,
total mileage was probably around 75 miles but that also gave
everybody the chance to relax toss back a cold beverage, grab
some food and whine about how hot it was this summer. The
turnout this year was exceptional with 268 registered riders
which amounted to around $6700 bucks being raised, not
counting the 50/50 drawing and all the raffle tickets sold!
Gloria Ellis A.K.A “G” founded this run quite
a few years ago, then went on to Trademark the name,
and there was a new twist to it this year. Rather than
being totally dedicated to Breast Cancer, ALL the
monies raised will benefit all types of cancer research
and support. Plus the funds will stay in the Phoenix
community!
We started at the Steel Horse Saloon, then
headed up to The Roadrunner Saloon, then on to the
Station, Wild Horse West, and ended up at the Deer
Valley Fraternal order of Eagles #3871. The weather
was great and we were entertained on the back patio
by The Hillbilly Barbecue Band, and several other
special guest musicians. The Eagle Riders cooked
the food for the event (great grub) and the rest of
the members made sure there was plenty of ice cold
beverages on hand and a lot of “Chesticles also!!
In “G’s” words… “Last year LaDonna Pitt had the
same type of hot pink boots that I was wearing. When
I bought myself my boots I was so excited to call her and
tell her that her and I were going to be wearing our hot
pink boots together this year. Unfortunately LaDonna
passed away August 31 from pancreatic cancer. She was
only 46 years old. At her memorial there in front were
her hot pink boots and the hot pink boa. I wore my hot
pink boots in her memory for as long as I could (are my feet
hurting today) and I even danced in them in her memory.
Then the idea came to me to have people sign them. I love
them even more now.
All in all the event seemed to be
enjoyed by all and the ride was a safe one. For that I am
very happy.”
It’s unfortunate we have to go on these rides but
on the other hand at least the biker community is doing
something to help out, all of us have been on some type
of benefit ride, we get to see friends have some fun and do
something good for our local community.
Always ride safe, have some fun and watch out
for the yoyo who isn’t watching out for YOU!! Cya
out there somewhere!

Coverage by Randy Twells and Dana “Irish Flame” Fruend
Photos by RT, Irish Flame, Sunshine Lane & Chester’s Reno H-D.
SEPTEMBER in Reno, Sparks & Virginia City, NV—With summer still
strong here, Fall Street Vibrations nevertheless kicked off with storm clouds,
rain showers here and there, and cooler temps. Area riding is the reason for
the season here. Fall Street Vibrations locates in Reno’s downtown with a
party in the street. Event visitors partied til late evening nightly in the glow
from the colorfully lit world famous archway proclaiming Reno as “The
Biggest Little City in the World”, casino facades and neon.
The Reno Ballroom where Roadshows event registration was based, had
plenty of Quick Throttle Magazine’s September Sons of Anarchy New Season
Premiere issue on hand. The Ballroom held a full array of merchandise
vendors and tattoo artists, while outside there was a beer garden/food vendor
area with bleachers for seating, and bands rocking the stage. Right outside
down the block John Stotts’ Globe of Death was exciting to watch as John and
partner Bela Tabak rode their motorcycles in overlapping circles inside at the
same time. Big rig exhibitors show their stuff up and down Virginia Street,
and on Sunday the Arm Wrestling competition tops off the week.
Nighttime in Reno Friday and Saturday treated partiers to a fireworks show
from the top of the Silver Legacy. There was bike parking on closed streets but
also the major casinos mostly have free parking- or at the Silver Legacy you
could get validated with any purchase in the casino- so of course an ice cream
was an ‘essential’ purchase.
Roadshows really takes care of you as a VIP registered participant- you
get an event T-shirt, special event pass and dogtags, 2 VIP parties- one with
food and music entertainment in the Silver Legacy Rum Bullion’s Bar, and
the Journey Unauthorized & Cheating Daylight concert at John Ascuaga’s
Nugget in the Celebrity Showroom, (what an awesome showroom); poker
run & walk entries, bike competition entry, a cool event pin, a (‘sell your’) Bike
Corral in the Reno Ballroom, ‘and more’.
Cheating Daylight is two sets of brothers- 5 teens from 13-18. Bass/vocalist
Connor Gill and drummer Jaden Crosson, are both 13 with seasoned skills
and stage presence beyond their years. Connor on bass—the guitar is bigger
than he is! The audience went crazy at the boys’ renditions of Van Halen’s
Jump and Fun’s We Are Young. These wickedly talented teens were from
earlier bands and have been playing together as Cheating Daylight since 2011.
Journey Unauthorized, OK ladies, this is what Girls Night Out was tailor
made for. Perry Stevens came out in white tails, black vest, no shirt, red pants,
gorgeous Steve Perry hair, and sang the Journey hits with full throated voice,
every bit the Steve Perry we remember, even leaping out in the audience; the
whole band was… quite a Journey!
The Winds of Change-After many years of being located on Victorian Square, Fall 2012’s Sparks
Vendor Village and party area moved to private property on the JA Nugget
west parking area, with a No Colors policy for the enjoyment and safety of
all participants. Most if not all the downtown Reno hotels did also prohibit
colors on their premises. Wallet-friendly too, most outside entertainment and
vendor area attractions you could do and see for FREE. NEW this year was
FREE shuttle service between downtown Reno and Sparks venues for riders
who wanted to party both places safely, every half hour during vendor hours
plus an hour before and after.

NOVEMBER 2012
Plenty of shaded seating/tables at Sparks Vendor Village, had food & drink
vendors close by and the big stage with bands playing the whole week. Bike
parking right there and major exhibitors with multiple big rigs are out here
such as Kuryakyn & Progressive Machine. The Slow Races hosted by Radio
Rockstar Trey Valentine of BOB 93.7 Radio were a blast, not for being fast,
but for being, well, slow, and all the groaner jokes Trey could manage about
doing… things.. slow..and not just riding bikes.
Friday night I went to the Buckcherry Concert at the Knitting Factory,
a mostly standing room concert house right in downtown Reno, entry
through the back alley and hustle through the tightly packed crowd with
help from Shawn and Sunshine Lane of local Reno band Rumble, up to the
photographers’ pit down in front of the stage, shooting Lit til Josh Todd and
friends hit the stage. Official photogs get 3 songs and then out of the pit; we
can shoot from the back after that. What a crazy place! Buckcherry was a hit,
Josh giving us the full treatment, you’d think it was Sturgis. Thanks to the
Knit’s Bruce Duff for making it possible.
America’s Finest Custom Bike Builders’ Expo Invitational had free
admission, up in the Silver Legacy Silver Baron Room, each artfully displayed
on its own dais like a collection of varied jewels. Stan McClanahan’s 1948
125cc H-D was my favorite. This vintage treasure with a 1948 Oregon plate
carries an original on-board fire extinguisher & can of oil, both clamped into
the right side of the bike. This was the first year H-D’s used hand clutch and
foot shifter.
Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson as an official sponsor of Street Vibrations,
holds a huge party each time Spring and Fall. This Fall brought bands, food,
a bike raffle of a H-D 2012 “72” by Roadshows with their model Amanda in
full feather headdress & leathers, great vendors and local community causes
such as the Cub Scouts, and plenty of motorcycles to drool over both for sale
and those ridden in by event participants and parked as far as the eye can see
on all roads around the dealership. Many were here for the Street Vibrations’
VIP Poker Run final stop.
Bands included the Jason King Band, Alias Smith and Steel Breeze, with
Gwen Stefani look-and-soundalike Tammy Tam Tam aka “Gwen In Doubt”!
Wow! Beautiful and articulate Miss Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson,
Kristy Dennis walked around and did photos with some happy partiers;
she’s been a Miss Hawaiian Tropic, Miss California and moving on to
Miss US International, all major accomplishments with tough competition. Renowned Harley-Davidson commissioned Artist Scott Jacobs works were
displayed & available for purchase including the Panhandler, which appeared
on Quick Throttle’s August cover. Black Sheep Motorcycle Ministry was
also here to offer support to any biker who needs help with any personal
issue.
I sat down with Ed Leclere, Promotions Director for Chester’s HarleyDavidson dealerships and he shared some history of Chester’s revolving
around one of their iconic owners and long-distance rider E. B. Chester,
based in Mesa, AZ. As illustrated in their paperback book Glory Road, Ed
carries on the tradition putting long rides together. This year Chester’s Grand
Teton Harley-Davidson had its 10 year Anniversary so Ed did a ride with his
wife Brenda from Mesa, AZ to Idaho Falls, Idaho for the Grand Teton party,
then continued on over to Chester’s Reno H-D for the Street Vibrations party. Then on the road again for parts beyond and eventually of course back to
Mesa; it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it. Ed is looking to put together

more rides like this, the goal being a group adventure on a great scenic route
that stops at all the Chester’s dealerships along the way. Music legends Crosby, Stills & Nash and George Thorogood were in town
for one night each. CSN takes us old bikers back to the day- where were you
when some of those classics first came out? Yeah, we all wanted to “be them”.
Skynnyn Lynnyrd’s concert brought the Lynyrd Skynyrd experience to
fans at Harrah’s Outdoor Plaza as they would have had with the original
members Ronnie Van Zant and the others lost too young in 1977. The full
lineup including keys, and female backups given their own solo spots doing a
couple numbers each. Lead guitarist Robert Moody’s exploding guitar solos
transport the crowd into the stratosphere in the Freebird finale, while I’m
killing a camera battery capturing it all!
Santa Fe Springs High School Jr. ROTC WWII Color Guard, wearing
actual vintage WWII era uniforms, performed the presentation of colors and
ceremonial flag raising at Sparks’ Vendor Village stage. These three young
men and one young lady personified up and coming American youth who
want to serve.
A memorial was held for stunt performer Monte Perlin’s son Sam Wagner,
who passed away recently, a tragic loss to his family and the motorcycle
world; Gary Laurent is currently replacing Sam in the Monte Perlin stunt
shows, including Fall Street Vibrations.
Motorcycle Industry Icon Mondo Porres of Denver’s Choppers was the
Judge for this year’s Fall Street Vibrations Bike Competition; First Place was
won by Sparks local Herb Kentner with his old school 1969 XLCH Sportster
Street Custom on a AEE custom rigid frame he built in the winter of ’71, and
41 years later what you see is exactly what he built, the day he finished it. He
packed a small bag on the sissy bar, put his trophy in it, and rolled off the red
carpet til next year.
The Roadshows Raffle 2012 Harley-Davidson 72 was won by Emily Ruff of
Sparks, who bought her ticket at the Rib Cook-off in Sparks.
Our Northern NV Correspondent Irish Flame rode the highways around the
area and checks in with her report!

September in Nevada brings one of the
biggest, funnest and most anticipated
motorcycle events of the year, Street
Vibrations! Randy Burke owner
and founder of Street Vibrations is
celebrating his18th year. “We have gone
from 1500 in the first year up to 50,000
when the weatherman cooperates.
This year everything went great and I
am so thankful for all of the wonderful
people who attended from all over the
country.” said Burke.
Burke’s brand name is “Roadshows”
and is responsible for vending,
promotions, marketing and at some
big bike events are co-producers.
Burke is very proud to announce that
in 2013 they will be co-producers
of the Milwaukee House of HarleyDavidson’s 110th
Homecoming
Celebration. They are expecting over
300,000 bikers attending from all over
the nation and abroad.
Now here are just some of the fun
things QT had me write about. Let’s
start with some Poker Run stops and
Saturday in Virginia City for what
the locals lovingly call “the Boobie
Parade.” Thousands lined the famous
C Street in Virginia City to watch
incoming and outgoing bikers run a
gauntlet for...BEADS. If you flashed
your assets and flaunted your attributes
you receive from a mostly grateful
male attendance, colorful beads.
It’s hot and I need a cold one in this
heat, we sit and have a tasty Bloody
Mary at the Silver Queen and walk
over to check out the VIP poker stop.
Great vendors and shops here! We
then work our way up the crowded
street to say hello to our friends at the
very haunted Washoe Club.“This is
one of the biggest and funnest tourist
weekends of the summer said Barry
Fox, manager of the Washoe Club, we
look forward to this all year!”
Next, on the VIP Poker Run is The
Genoa Bar and Bodine’s Casino. Our
Northern Nevada roads are winding,
beautiful and the day is perfect for
an all day ride. The Poker Run goes
up by Lake Tahoe but no Poker stop,
just breathtaking scenery. Now we
head down OMGGG...the very steep
Kingsbury grade to Nevada’s Oldest
Thirst Parlor “The Genoa Bar” where
in the parking lot was one of the
biggest damn bikes I ever laid eyes on!
The owner who was a man equal to
this leviathan said “it is a 1001 horse
powered Vanquish V8.” He was the
talk of the parking lot! Last on our
28
NOVEMBER 2012

trek is Bodine’s Casino where they
were giving hats and t-shirts away to
participants. Whew! What a great day!
While checking out the local events I
serendipitously met a group of riders
at the Carson Gold Dust West, having
their own Street Vibration celebration.
They rented out the place for their
pool party, award ceremony and oh so
cool, slow ride competition. They are
the Shadows of the Knight MC from
Oakland Ca. The lovely ladies playing
Dominoes in the Knights parking
lot, introduced me to “Big Sas” one
of the founding members of the
Knights. He then introduced me to my
gracious host, their President Anthony
Nathaniel. The Knights were all about
family, food, music and a great ride to
all of the area sights.
Anthony invited me to attend the
evening’s Slow Ride competition. So
glad I went! This is a strictly HarleyDavidson group with some of the
prettiest polished chrome candy
you ever saw, it looked like a HD
showroom party. The DJ was rocking
the parking lot, many are dancing and
then the announcement for the slow
ride competition was made. Eleven
entries and it was on!
But wait! What’s this? Just barely into
the competition and rolling in on his
fully dressed Harley and I mean this
bike did not have all the bells and
whistles but it had, lights, siren and a
badge! With the crowd cheering the
Master of Ceremony is announcing
what sounds like...A celebrity...a rock
star? But to my amazement I see that it
is none other than Carson City’s own
Slow Ride Champion and local hero
Sgt. Mike Cullen of the Carson City
Sheriff ’s Department.
With style and perfect execution Sgt.
Cullen rolled in and articulated the
Knights slow ride course and ended in
a very cool bike slide. Sgt. Cullen then
stayed and competed with the Knights
in several heats being supported by
his CCSO officers and friends. In the
end....Mike and the Knights slow ride
champ “Manny” faced off and Sgt.
Cullen not only has won the hearts of
the Knights crowd but won the Slow
Ride competition.
“I have been visiting the Knights during
Street vibrations for three years, I look
forward to having a little fun with
them every year, they are a great bunch
of guys,” said Sgt. Cullen. As for me, I
look forward to seeing everyone again
next year. Slain te. (Cheers in the Irish)

Speaking of which, the winner of the
bike, Rick Carlson of Chicago, bought
his ticket online. Rick had planned on
making the ride, but unfortunately had
to miss the ride as he was dealing with
some family issues. Ironically enough,
when Paul & Suzy called him to tell
him he had won, he was at the hospital
visiting his brother, who was going
through chemo treatments for this god
awful disease that we are fighting so
hard to get rid of. God speed to you and
yours, Rick!
The Ride

IT is truly amazing how time flies
when you are having fun! I cannot
believe that we have done this
event FOUR times already!!! First
things first, we have to thank and
congratulate the event founders
and hosts, Shelley Martin and Jack
Estes of the Dirty Dogg Saloon
for another fantastically run and
outstanding ride event!
So much to say and don’t even
know where to start. From the
beginning... This ride event starts
right after the last one ends. Shelley
literally has to start the planning a
year in advance now because of how
this ride has grown from the first
event in 2008 when there was just a
couple hundred bikes involved. To
give credit where credit is certainly
due, we have to acknowledge Missy
Hughes, Owner of Two Gals Event
Planning, and her staff, because as
Shelley will tell you herself, this
event would never be what it is
without Missy. In fact, it was Missy’s
idea to ask Paul Yaffe to see if he
would build a bike for this year’s
event. It was a great idea that would
not only come to fruition, but would
certainly have profound impact on
the event, not only for this year, but
also for year’s to come.
If you were at last year’s event,
then you might remember that it
was at the end of the event, at the
big party at the Dogg, that Paul &
Suzy Yaffe pulled Shelley on stage
30
Once again, Mother Nature gave us
her blessing by providing absolutely
PERFECT riding conditions. How
freaking lucky are we to have such
awesome riding weather in the middle
of October?? Temps started in the high
70’s and probably hit mid 90’s by the
time we were done. Shelley always
wants to be sure to mix this ride up every
year to keep it interesting. This year, the
ride started at Chester’s HD, which is a
great venue, Ed and his staff always go
above and beyond the call of duty to
make sure everything goes off without a
hitch. The second stop, Baseline Sports
Bar, owned by AJ Hunter, has become
a local’s favorite and they too did a great
job in handling the big crowd. Next
stop, Greasewood Flats. Another great
venue with plenty of space to spread out
and great food to boot! The other great
thing about Greasewood is where it is
located. Nestled in some very mature
trees up in North Scottsdale, it makes for
a great destination ride. After some great
shade time, the fourth stop was HD of
Scottsdale, where Shelley works on the
sales staff. Justin and his team at HD of
Scottsdale, I’m sure has made the folks
at GO AZ Motorcycles very proud as
they too, go way above and beyond the
call of duty to provide a great venue and
stellar service in running their events.
and announced that they would, in
fact, build the first ever, Bikers for
Boobies Bike, to be raffled off. What
this did was allow Shelley and Missy
to advertise this event for the entire
year as they immediately started
selling raffle tickets for the bike.
Chester’s HD stepped up and
provided the bike, a 2010 HD Road
Glide. Then Paul took the bike,
added his famous touches and the
result was one bad ass ride. When
I talked to Paul about the build,
which he figured had over 100
hours into it, he wanted to make
sure that I mentioned that he had a
little help from his friends. Wanaryd
Wheels designed and provided both
wheels and rotors. Custom Chrome,
who manufactures the Bagger
Nation gas tanks, provided the
tank, Brian Klock of Klockworks
added the windshield, Supertrapp
did the exhaust and pipes, Arlen
Ness kicked in the bags, Rockford
Fosgate and Cycle Sounds turned
on the sound and Paul’s own Bagger
Nation crew did the rest. As an
added bonus, even though the flat
black look rocks, Delux Customs
will be providing a custom paint
job. Paul didn’t stop there either.
He took it upon himself to take
the bike on the road! He took it to
Galveston, Texas for the Lone Star
Rally. Las Vegas for BikeFest and
to STURGIS, among others. What
was great about all of this was the
fact that riders around the country
were learning about this great ride
for such a great cause! Meanwhile,
raffle tickets were being sold by the
hundreds, at the events and online.
Of course the final stop is the World
Famous Dirty Dogg Saloon, where
owner Jack Estes just continues to
impress with his vision and ability to pull
off remarkable feats in his planning and
running of this now epic ride event.
The festivities at the Dogg were hosted
by none other than our very own, Jack
Schit, while Whiskey Rodeo provided
the tunes. I gotta say though, the
highlight of the show was the designer
bra fashion show!
The Numbers
420 Riders pre-registered prior to
Sunday. The first 250 slots sold out in
just two days! Ultimately, over 900 bikes
with 1200 participants showed their
support for this never-ending cause.
NOVEMBER 2012
NOVEMBER 2012
YOU GUYS ROCK!
All I could confirm at this point is that
the Charity will be receiving a check for
OVER $20,000! Well done, Arizona,
well done!! And congratulations again,
to Shelley, Missy and Jack for their
contributions in making it all happen.
Oh, by the way, Shelley’s not done,
either. She’s now working on the “Peace
Out Prostate Cancer Ride”, that will
debut right before AZ Bike Week next
year. Stay Tuned!
All in all, another hugely successful
event for Shelley, Missy and of course,
the most important of all, the charity,
Casting For Recovery. There were over
20 volunteers, actual survivors, that
helped out every step of the way for the
ride. This cause, which truly is, all about
the recovery, is based here in Arizona.
What CFR provides is services and
activities for women who have endured
breast mastectomies. The name comes
from their focus on recovery from taking
these women on retreats where they
learn to fly fish. Believe it or not, the
actual action of casting helps rebuild
those muscles affected by the surgery.
Shelley made up her mind after the
2nd event that CFR would be the sole
beneficiary of the monies raised because
ALL of the money goes to them and it
stays right here in Arizona. Currently,
because of the lack of funds, CFR can
only take a certain number of women on
the retreat. It is Shelley’s goal to provide
enough funds where ALL the women get
taken on the retreat. How cool is that?
This is the 2nd time for me covering
this event, as the 2nd one was the first
covered and I was out of town last year.
I’ve known Shelley now for close to nine
years as being a regular of the Dogg and
I can tell you that she is one amazing
human being who I am grateful to have
the fortune of knowing. She, like many
of us, has dealt with the tragedies of this
horrible disease first hand, including
losing her father last year. While sitting
with her this time, I asked her what it
felt like to watch this thing evolve into
what it has and how it made her feel. It
was an emotional moment for both of us
as we looked at each other and realized
just how big it really has become. She
admitted that it really hasn’t even hit her
yet. It’s what she said next that really
blew me away. There was a woman
named Jennifer Sykes who was at the
event with her son. Jennifer is currently
dealing with her own battle, as evidenced
by the loss of her hair. Shelley asked
me if I had seen her and noticed how
beautiful she was. I told her yes. She said
that having Jennifer there and being able
to have her picture taken with her made
it all worthwhile. God Bless Shelley
Martin. The world would be a lot better
off if we had a bunch more just like her.

Story and Photos by Randy Twells
The expression of the Warrior’s Code is often
seen only by the Warriors and comrades in the
closest most intense situations of life and death.
You back up your comrades in arms, and do
everything humanly possible to never leave them
on their own to face the enemy, be it in life or
death. You do what you know that they would
do for you. This is the spirit of the Warrior’s
Code.
But returning vets often fight those battles over
and over, and on their own, once they return
home, sometimes due to the struggle that
develops within from the internal momentum
to maintain their strong exterior though being
expected to transition seamlessly to civilian life,
and often with the added pressure of doing so
without adequate backup from a government
struggling to support a large number of vets
needing this help all at the same time.
Enter Wounded Warrior Homes, an organization
dedicated to helping returning vets re-acclimate
to life as civilians but who often have residual
challenges that require a bridge over the troubled
waters still flowing from their battle experiences,
to that life of normalcy they so greatly deserve.

and Mia Roseberry founded the WWH
organization, their background and how it
provides real practical support for vets suffering
from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post
Truaumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
As you can imagine, homes of this type are
specialized and have to be constructed or
remodeled from existing structures so that they
can serve the necessary function. So Wounded
Warrior Homes holds fund-raising events such
as, the Warrior’s Code Poker Run, on its 3rd
Annual outing this year at San Diego HarleyDavidson, an opportunity for all of us to step up
and help keep the Code.
San Diego Harley provided the place and
the lunch, many supportive local sponsors
participated with vendor displays and/or prizes,
and the weather smiled on the day. San Diego
Harley’s owner New York Myke, an Airborne
Vietnam Vet who has seen it all, was on hand
to commend participants and Wounded Warrior
Homes for their efforts. The band Steelhorse
played on and the family-friendly activity
abounded, with hundreds of riders participating
throughout the day for Poker Run and party.
The Ride took us from San Diego HD down to
Sweetwater HD, South Bay Motorsports, out
to Lyons Valley Trading Post and then back to
San Diego Harley. 50/50 raffle and prize raffles
rewarded ticket buyers well, and Tom Burns’s
energetic Pomeranian riding buddy “Gordy”
won the Poker Ride with the High Hand. Yep,
Gordy won. Gordy was just happy to be there
riding in his cool ‘tour pack’ screened carrier! He
had a hard time drawing the cards so Tom did it
for him. You had to be there.
Steve and Mia were hands-on present overseeing
the Warrior’s Code Poker Run event with
volunteers Gigi, Tess, Paula and Mary. Right
next door, the Women of AT&T volunteer
organization had a table for anyone to sign up
promising to refrain from texting and driving.
For signing up, you got an entry to win a great
AT&T smartphone- the HTC Freestyle, a slim
compact full touchscreen device with all the
newest bells & whistles, valued at $100 won by
a very appreciative event visitor. Other prizes
(including a beautiful riding jacket) came from
many sponsors some of whom were: South
Bay Motorsports, 5 Hour Energy, E Live Life,
Healthy Won Massage, San Diego H-D, San
Diego Zoo Safari Park (2 free tickets to either
park), Sampson CA Realty, Trilogy Financial,
Law Tigers, Loose Cannon Customs, plus others.
Many clubs and riding groups rolled through
resulting in thousands of dollars in funds raised,
every dollar of which goes to help Wounded
Warrior Homes keep the Code.
Come out next year for this event and other
fund-raisers throughout the year—such as the
upcoming Nov. 10th Veterans Day event on
the Center Street Promenade in Downtown
Anaheim, CA-- and help Wounded Warrior
Homes in their efforts to fulfill the Warrior’s
Code, for all our troops who have fulfilled so
much more than their end of the deal already.
