Mammon means money or material wealth. We see Jesus’ point: we cannot be good Christians if our desires, motives and pursuits are divided. We cannot on the one hand be faithful Christians if on the other hand we are seeking to get rich. Those two ways of life conflict. Jesus talks about serving a master. He doesn’t say that it’s wrong to serve God and mammon, or that it’s not a good idea. He says it can’t be done. If you’re not serving God, then you’re necessarily serving mammon. There is no in-between. “Mammon” isn’t simply about money or material wealth as such. The Bible doesn’t teach that merely having money or property is wrong. There is nothing wrong with having money that you have rightly earned or that someone has given you. So it seems Jesus is focusing on greedy, money-hungry people who only want to get and stay rich without concern for anyone else. Does this apply to everyone? Were the disciples driven only by the desire to get rich? They were fishermen who didn’t have much chance of becoming rich in their line of work. Shepherds likely heard Jesus teach this, and they likewise had little chance of getting rich. Did they wonder if Jesus meant them? Jesus was talking about serving masters. How does one serve God and how does one serve mammon, two very different masters? One is a loving Father whose kingdom shall have no end. The other is a cold ledger with red and black ink and is passing away. When we serve God, we serve what is eternal. When we serve mammon, we serve that which perishes. Serving means at least this: what worldview do we live by? Where does the world begin and end as far as you can see? Serving God means our world begins and ends with God’s will and purposes. We’re serving God if our lives are all about these things. On the other hand, if we serve mammon, we cannot at the same time serve God. Again, there’s nothing wrong with honestly acquired wealth. And the Bible doesn’t say that everyone must give up all their possessions and give to the poor. Jesus did tell the young rich prince to give up all he had and give to the poor. That was just for him. We can’t all give away everything to the poor, because we would only be adding to their number. It’s when our world begins and ends with money that we’re serving mammon. Servants who serve masters are under that master’s control. If we attempt to serve two masters, whoever they are, the purposes of each will conflict, and we will end up serving the interests of neither. If we are not serving God, if all that we say and do is not moving us closer to fellowship with God and Christ-likeness, then we are necessarily serving mammon. We work our jobs, buy our goods and services, all the while making a profit for someone else. Failing to serve God plays right into the hand of mammon. When we don’t serve God we can be sure that someone or something will fill that vacuum with something that will serve the purposes of worldliness. You cannot serve both God and mammon. Amen. Blessings, In Jesus Fr. David TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord never forgets the sins of those who take advantage of the poor (Amos 8:4-7). Psalm — Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor (Psalm 113). Second Reading —Pray to the Lord, who wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:1-8). Gospel — Be trustworthy in all things. Serve God, the only master, not mammon (Luke 16:1-13 [10-13]). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Catechetical Sunday Monday: St. Januarius Tuesday: Ss. Mammon significa dinero o riqueza material. Kerrville, TX VINNIE’S ON BROADWAY NOTES FROM THE HEART The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need that we assist. A recent customer to the Thrift Store was looking for books to expand on Fr. David's Myth or Fact night. Came in for a book, left with four. All very needed. Something that makes the volunteers that price items for the store sad is to get picture frames donated that still have family photos in them. Even once the family was recognized by a volunteer who called the family. Nope, didn't need the photo, had other copies. How can you price memories or sell them? We sell the frames. A senior citizen born and raised in Kerrville stopped in for some assistance before leaving town. Much as he hated to, he needed to move because he could no longer afford Kerrville's apartment rents. A resident of a local motel died without funds for burial. We were asked to help. We turn this request down. The county ended up providing the service. We helped the surviving spouse with living expense instead. WISH LIST: More volunteers in Food Pantry and to do pick-ups. Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, by Sherry A. Weddell is already familiar to our parish leaders who are part of the Evangelism Team. It was one of the first books used in the introductory workshop last year, and was called “very helpful” by a team member. Mrs. Waddell reports that after eight years of of interviewing and leading evangelization seminars, “We learned that there is a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon between the Church’s sophisticated theology of the lay apostolate and the lived spiritual experience of the majority of our people. And this chasm has a name: discipleship. We learned that the majority of even ‘active’ American Catholics are still at an early, essentially passive stage of spiritual development.” In the final chapter, Mrs. Waddell warns us: “For many centuries. the Church has taught that God gave us our intellect, will, and strength to use in his service. Catholicism famously honors the intellect in its relationship to faith. But we are seriously mistaken if we think and plan as though all we can expect to see happen in our parishes is what we could expect to see happen in any secular nonprofit filled with clever people. If we are going to seriously evangelize our own, we had better be prepared for the Holy Spirit to do things in people’s lives and in our parishes that are not part of our five-year plans.” Archdiocese of San Antonio Assembly 2016 OFFERTORY COLLECTION Registration is now open for online for Assembly 2016, taking place on Saturday, November 5, on the campus of St. Mary’s University, Keynote Speakers will be Eduardo Verástegui, Karyme Lozano and Fr. Thomas McCarthy. In the spirit of this year’s theme “United as Church” we are requiring all participants attending Assembly 2016 to carpool in groups of no less than three persons per vehicle. Vehicles with less than three persons will not be allowed to park on campus. To foster the spirit of unity, it is Archbishop Gustavo’s desire for all attendees to embrace this requirement as a sign of our communion with one another. This three person requirement applies to all vehicles, including those requesting accessible parking (vehicles must show handicapped placard) on the St. Mary’s campus for those with disabilities. Register for Assembly 2016 by visiting the Archdiocese website at www.assemblysa.org or call (210)734-1911.
