May 23 saw us at Felix’s for the annual swap meet enjoying the company of old friends and meeting some new drive by visitors that biked in. This is my 10th Anniversary issue - yep 10 years ago the first issue of the Valley Vendor was printed under my name Ray Pappin. Both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit the door closes, and the engines start up. The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some kind of a sign that this is just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and the people sitting in the window seats realize they’re head- ed straight for the water at the edge of the airport property. Just as it begins to look as though the plane will plow straight into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon all retreat into their magazines and books, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands. Meanwhile, in the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, ‘You know, Bob, one of these days, they’re gonna scream too late and we’re all gonna die’!! It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats, and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon.” God continued, “I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth.” “But Lord,” asked Gabriel “don’t you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?” “Not really,” replied God “just wait and see the winters I am going to give them.” AND NOW YOU KNOW. A lawyer had a wife and 12 children and needed to move as his rental agreement was coming to an end for the home where he lived but was having difficulty in finding a new home. When he said he had 12 children, no one would rent a home to him because they knew that the children would destroy the home. He could not say that he had no children, he could not lie; after all, lawyers cannot and do not lie. So, he had an idea: he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with 11 children. He took the remain- 22 • JUNE 2015 ing one with him to see homes with the Real Estate Agent. He liked one of the homes and the agent asked, “how many children do you have?” He answered: “12 children”. The agent asked, “where are the others?” The lawyer answered, with a sad look, “They are in the cemetery with their mother”. And that’s the way he was able to rent a home for his family without lying. MORAL: It is not necessary to lie; one only has to choose the right words. If you have a non-conviction record holding you back from enjoying life it would be useful to get a Record Purge. Even if you have never been convicted of a crime, a registered background check can still show a non-conviction record on your criminal records check. This could stop you from finding work, adopting a child, or even travelling freely across the border. It’s Audrey, the foot care nurse...it’s here! It’s finally here...SUMMER! One benefit of summer in the Ottawa Valley is knowing that instead of trying to keep frostbite at bay, you can relax with your toes digging bare foot in the sand at the cottage or the many beaches. But remember you can seriously sunburn your feet, and no matter where you are athlete’s foot can lay waiting at any pool. Remember to be sun savvy and foot careful this summer with these helpful hints: Limit walking barefoot as it exposes feet to sunburn, as well as plantar warts, athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other infections and also increases risk of injury to your feet. Wear shoes or flip-flops around the pool, to the beach, or in the change room to prevent injuries and limit the likelihood of contracting any bacterial infections. Remember to apply waterproof sunscreen all over your feet, especially the tops and fronts of ankles, and don’t forget to reapply after you’ve been in the water. And remember a SPF over 30 is recommended. This should be my mantra, I know all of my patients may tire of me preaching this, but stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This will not only help with overall health, but will also minimize any foot swelling caused by the heat. Keep blood flowing with periodic ankle flexes, toe wiggles, and calf stretches. Some activities at the beach, lake or river may require different types of footwear to be worn. To be safe, always pack an extra pair of sneakers or water shoes. If your shoes will be getting wet, they should be dried out completely before your next wearing to prevent bacteria or fungus from growing. If you injure your foot or ankle while on vacation, seek professional medical attention. In case of minor foot problems, be prepared with the following on-the-go foot gear: Flip flops—for the pool, spa, hotel room, and airport security check points. Sterile bandages—for covering minor cuts and scrapes. Emollient-enriched cream—to hydrate feet. Blister pads or moleskin—to protect against blisters. Motrin or Advil (anti-inflammatory)—to ease tired, swollen feet. Toenail clippers—to keep toenails trimmed. Emery board—to smooth rough edges or broken nails. Pumice stone—to soften callused skin. Sunscreen—to protect against the scorching sun. Aloe vera—to relieve sunburns. Remember to check your feet daily, especially those with diabetes or any other ailment that causes a decrease in foot sensitivity. I always recommend using a hand mirror to see all areas. Summer is such a short season, please take are of your feet so that you can enjoy every last minute of it...and if you are having difficulty, you can always visit a foot care nurse...like ME!!! 23 • JUNE 2015 www.valleyvendor.biz INTRODUCING VALLEY VENDOR SENIOR SERVICES DIRECTORY Over June 2015, we will be calling on Senior Services related business in hopes of designing a Valley service directory in the paper to serve our 20,000+ readers, the majority of which are boomers or boomer II’s. I know the Northern Old Bastards Vintage MC Club give annually to hospitals, but seeing what they do first hand is something else. Since that day and up to mid June, I will be receiving IVs every day to treat an infection. It was refreshing to see that these services are available, and to deal with the profesionals associated with the processes of health care. Adjustments to my drug expenses have been large and I am not ‘on the dole’ so any readers that want me to keep providing you something to read feel free to join the other readers in the past that have sent in donations in appreciation and send in some cash to help out. Anything you want is yours for the asking.’ The cat thought for a minute and then said, ‘All my life, I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.’ God said, ‘Say no more.’ Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, ‘Well, we have had to run all of our lives from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.’ God answered, ‘It is done.’ All the mice had beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, ‘Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?’ The cat replied, ‘Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. He said, “your husband is suffering from a very severe disease, combined with horrible stress. If you don’t do the following, your husband will surely die.” “Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant, and make sure he is in a good mood. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don’t burden him with chores, as he probably had a hard day. Don’t discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. And most importantly. Make love with your husband several times a week and satisfy his every whim. If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely.” On the way home, the husband asked his wife. “What did the doctor say?” “You’re going to die,” she replied. with the fancy plate?’ The waiter replies, ‘there’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.’ This guy goes into a restaurant for a Christmas breakfast while in his home town for the holidays. What does Glenergy do internationally? Glenergy is committed to the promotion of solar lighting in the developing world. We have a growing network of subsidiaries and affiliates in Africa through which we support local dealers with inventory, training and expertise. In an effort to eliminate the negative impacts of fuel-based lighting, Glenergy has developed a business model allowing small microbusinesses run by solar entrepreneurs to provide lighting service within their villages that is cheaper, safer and more effective than the currently available fuel-based lighting solutions. Supported by loans from Glenergy derived from loans to Glenergy from philanthropically-minded people, these entrepreneurs can start and grow their businesses in a variety of ways. 42 • JUNE 2015 Their customers might pay cash for a lamp/solar panel system, or they may buy a lamp and pay for charging at the entrepreneur’s solar charging station, they may rent a charged lamp, or they may make some other arrangement with the entrepreneur. They may be offered credit by the entrepreneur to enable the purchase, or may participate in a rent-to-own scheme. Different business models apply in different places, and even at different times, and will depend upon the resources and interests of the entrepreneurs and their customers. Next month’s article will feature an interview from Glenergy’s founder and president, Glen MacGillivray as he will be discussing his future plans and past activites in Africa, and all around the world. www.valleyvendor.biz Spring has Sprung at Country Haven Retirement Home Hello once again from Country Haven Retirement Home, located in the charming village of Beachburg! Here at our Home, we have passed a wonderful month of May! The weather has been absolutely gorgeous, making strolls around the grounds very enjoyable for us all! With the birds singing, the flowers blooming, and the scent of lilacs in the air, this really is one of the best times of the year! We kicked off the month of May with a very special birthday party, in honour of resident Eleanor (Nellie) Fleury. Nellie turned one hundred on May the sixth, so our Country Haven Family, along with Nellie’s family, joined together to celebrate her incredible milestone! We were pleased to have our Administrator, Tom Chaput as the entertainment for the party, as Nellie’s friends and family gathered to celebrate with her. When word got out of Nellie’s 100th Birthday, she received many special certificates and Happy Birthday wishes, from VIPs such as our Provincial and Federal Members of Parliament, the Governor General, and the Prime Minister himself! What lovely keepsakes to have in honour of a special day, and a very special lady! It was a wonderful party, and we wish Nellie many more healthy, happy years to come! We also celebrated all of our incredible Country Haven mothers with a Mother’s Day Party in May! We are very blessed at our Home to have a wonderful group of special mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers, and once a year seems hardly enough to thank them for all they have done for us, and continue to do! We enjoyed the party, complete with pretty decorations, great entertainment, sentimental readings, yummy treats, and the very best company! We also presented all of the ladies with a beautiful carnation on Mother’s Day morning, as a token of the love, and good wishes we have for them all year long! Happy Mother’s Day to all! The month of June is shaping up to be an enjoyable one here at Country Haven as well. We have our fingers crossed that the weather will continue to be as fabulous as it has been, so we can keep spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine! Plans are also underway to honour all of our terrific Country Haven Fathers with a special Father’s Day Party in June. Rumour has it that there will be pizza and pop at that party, so it should be a good one! From our Home to yours, we hope you all have a wonderful month! Until next time...happy trails! 43 • JUNE 2015 FOR SALE Hand guns Hopkins & Allen 32 cal. $300.00; G.S. JUST FOR FUN A foursome of senior golfers hit the course with waning enthusiasm for the sport. “These hills are getting steeper as the years go by,” one complained.” “These fairways seem to be getting longer too,” wheezed a second.” “And somehow, the sand traps seem to be bigger than I remember ‘em too,” said the third. Hearing just about enough from his buddies, the oldest, and the wisest of the foursome at 87-years-old, piped up and said, “Oh my friends, just be thankful we’re still on THIS side of the grass!” An English professor announced to the class; “There are two words I don’t allow in my class. One is gross and the other is cool.” From the back of the room a voice called out, “....... so, what are the words?” Mansfield Métro Beland, Econo Plus Dépanneur Beau-soir, Méga Dollar Campbell’s Bay Boni Choix, Kluke’s Corner Patties This and That Otter Lake Centre de l’artisanat Beauchamp Service Picanoc Corner Store Shawville Valu-Mart, Palais du Poulet Langford Groceries Giant Tiger, JJ’s Groceries Norway Bay Henderson Groceries Quyon Dépanneur Marcotte Luskville DépanneurPontiac Dépanneur Générale Bryson Vétéran Ultramar Marché Bryson Ile-du-Grand-Calumet Dépanneur Bérard Fort-Coulonge Variété Romain Marché Bowers Petit Marché de la Principale 46 • JUNE 2015 www.valleyvendor.biz 47 • JUNE 2015 www.valleyvendor.biz 48 • JUNE 2015 www.valleyvendor.biz
