PETER AND JOHN FLY HIGH
Two local men took to the skies of Perthshire on July 31st in a hot air balloon.
Peter Robertson and John Martin each had received a gift of a balloon ride, and
it was only coincidence which led them to being on the same flight.
After several cancellations due to inclement weather, the last day of July was
blessed with beautiful weather, and the pair joined a dozen others and pilot
Conrad Van Wyk for a very memorable experience.
Photo above: Peter & John (front left) smile for the Virgin camera which is
extended from the balloon to capture memorable shots.

Scottish Country Dancing is great fun. It's social dancing,
which means there's no audience, just the pleasure of
dancing together to the best of our various
abilities. Beginners are always welcome and you don't
need a partner. Our photo shows the annual dance.
If you can walk and have some sense of direction, you
can learn this kind of dancing! Now's the time to start!
We usually meet in Airlie Street Hall (unless stated) on
Thursday evenings and classes run from 7.30 - 9.30 pm.

AIR TRAINING CORP
SUMMER CAMP
Five cadets and two members of staff from 2519 (Strathmore)
Squadron, Air Training Corps, had a successful week’s Summer Camp, from the 8th to 15th of August with 34 cadets and
7 staff drawn from 775 (Burntisland), 1370 (Leven) 1192
(Kirkcaldy) 2311 (Leslie/Glenrothes) and 1145 (Dunfermline)
Squadrons at Royal Air Force Odiham, Hampshire where all
the Royal Air Forces Chinook HC2 (Helicopters) are based.
The five cadets who attended from 2519 (Strathmore)
Squadron were Cadet Flight Sergeant Jemma Reid, and Cadets Jillian Reid (both Burrelton) Murray Bullions, (Blairgowrie)
Lewis Dobie and Stuart Carling (both Alyth) and the two staff
were Adult Sergeant Mark Harper (Blairgowrie)and Flight
Lieutenant Michael Kay, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
(Training)(Alyth).

of August in the late afternoon after an 11½ hour coach jour- Front row 2nd from right is Cadet Stuart Carling, Back row from left cadet just before the roundel

Commander Flight Lieutenant Euan Mitchell followed bye a
fire safety brief from a member of the base’s Fire Section.
On the Sunday the cadets were split into two flights and the camp programme
commenced with a familiarisation exercise finding their way round the base. During
the week all cadets flew in Grob Tutors of 2 AEF (Air Experience Flight) at Boscome
Down where the Empire Test Pilots’ School is also based. All cadets had many
section visits to the Squadrons and Units which are based at Royal Air Force Odiham, such as Engineering Flight who maintain the Chinook HC2 Helicopters, 18 &
27 Squadrons that fly the Chinook, Air Traffic Control, Fire Section, Dog Section,
RAF Regiment, 7 Squadron, and Surrey Police Helicopter unit that flies the Eurocopter model 135. Eight cadets were fortunate to go gliding with VGS 618 who fly
the Vigilante Glider that are also based at RAF Odiham all achieved a GIC 1. They
also
undertook training on the No 8 .22” cadet rifle which they all hoped to fire
on the barrack range but due to a Range Conducting Officer being called away, this
had to be cancelled. Six cadets were fortunate to experience work experience at Air
Traffic Control, the Fire Section and RAF Police Flight. The Camp Photograph was
taken by a photographer from the Photographic Section in front of the Gate Guardian, a Whirlwind, one of the original helicopters that the Royal Air Force flew many
years ago. All the cadets enjoyed their two hour session at the Ten Pin Bowling in

the nearby City of Basingstoke but the Navigation Exercise round the town of Odiham was a trial for many due to the heat and constant sunshine. The highlight of the camp for everyone, cadets and staff alike, was a flight in a Chinook HC2 at
either 18 or 27 Squadrons. The flights lasted between 2 hours 15 minutes and nearly 3 hours and they watched as loadmasters under training guided through their
pilots the Chinook to pick up and drop off various under slung loads. On the Friday evening their was a fun night and presentations, and Cadet Lewis Dobie received a birthday cake to celebrate his 16th birthday which had happened during the week. The cadets returned home on the 15th August 2009, all tired but having
had a very enjoyable week learning and gleaning information about how the Royal Air Force works and having made many new friends from other squadrons.
If the above interests you and you are between the ages of 13 years old to 16 years old come along any Wednesday evening between 7.00.p.m. and 9.00.pm. to
2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, Drill Hall Building, Union Street, Blairgowrie and speak to the Commanding Officer, Adjutant or any of the Cadets and discover what
the Air Training Corp covers in its programmes/classes/projects.

I suppose it all started with Mr Darwin who suggested
that at some point in our evolution we descended from
the trees. Little did he realise that given time, he would
witness a reversal of his theory. This has taken the form
of our Explorer Scout Unit constructing a platform up a
tree sufficient for 9 of them to camp the night.
Our good friends Bill and Marjorie Twivey permitted
us not only to use a suitable site, but also provided the
raw materials of poles. Now these poles were initially
secured to the ground by roots, but this proved an enthusiastic distraction and great efforts ensued to remove
the required item from its natural state. The poles were
carefully selected to allow the remaining trees to flourish. After strenuous efforts with a bushman saw out
goes the cry “Watch yer (CRASH) heid...oopps”.
The initial idea for this task, came from a photo on the
website of some previous Venture Scouts who had built
one up the Haugh many moons ago. “We can do that”
our present Explorers stated. (Word of warning according to them they can explain Einstein’s theory of relativity with the same degree of optimism.) The design of
this construction was more along the lines of a debate
rather than adhering to the principals and concepts of
construction. Fortunately a general consensus of opinion was formed and floor and sides appeared as the
project took shape. Later additions were agreed with the
passing of time with the refinement of a dummy waiter
to hoist the rucsacs up to the required area. This consisted of a block and tackle device suspended from a
suitable supported pole. It is unclear how effective it
was, but it made a tremendous noise as the ropes
passed through the pulleys.
In addition to the main project, several other pioneering projects were undertaken – bridges, signal tower
and an assault course. It is very reassuring to observe
the guys’ enthusiasm for reviving these traditional
Scouting skills. It would be extremely difficult for us to
go any lower tec. - maybe a stone age axe! Apart from
the nailing down of the floor, all the poles are secured
with ropes – miles and miles of rope!
Our intrepid team consisted of Callum Pogson,
Callum Miller, Jack Brown, Bruce Arnott, Ross Mitchell,
Patrick West, Michael Milne, Liam McPherson, David
Anderson, Alex Ramsay, John Wheatley, Murray
Adamson, and Scott Adamson. This has kept the Explorers busy over the summer months and the Scouts
have also spent a night in the trees. During our stay, we
enjoyed a lovely summer night which was dry and warm
– the perfect camping conditions. Unfortunately we were
not so enamoured with the visit from a couple of owls at
5 a.m. who decided to have a conversation with each
other over a considerable distance - what they wanted
to chat about at that time of the day I have no idea and
frankly I couldn’t give a hoot!
Both the Scouts and Explorers continued to meet
during the holidays and tried to follow the theory that we
could use the good weather to carry out activities which
we would find difficult to do at any other time of the year.
And sometimes the weather helped!
Our Book Fest was very successful and we raised
£650 which we will be passing onto the Guide Hut Fund
and I would like to thank everyone who supported us in
achieving this amount which was far greater than expected.
During September the entire Scout Group will be
taking part in the campaign to reduce our electricity
consumption by at least 10%. By taking a bit of thought
of what we do and how we do it, this target should be
achievable if everyone in the community enters into the
masterplan. We all know that it makes sense especially
for future generations, so let’s see if we can’t take the
lead and give them the opportunity to put into practise,
measures that will help them.

- - VOICE TEASER - - What is the origin of DRIMMIE?
~~~
Answer to last month’s Teaser – The Doctor’s Burn?
From Muirton Road to New Alyth only.
So named because Dr. Pattullo, who practised in Alyth during the first half
of the nineteenth century, and who lived in 22 Commercial Street (having
his surgery in 24, and his coach-house in 26), farmed the fields east of the
burn, between the Muirton Road and the New Alyth Road. It is quite probable that the burn was cut during this time, or not long before, partly to
drain the Herdhillock mire, and partly to divert towards Balhary waters that
had formerly run past the west and south of Mornity. In Panton’s map of
1783, the Doctor’s Burn is not marked, and consequently there was no
Alyth Parish Church Guild outlet of water of the Herdhillock Mire towards the Nine-eyed Mire, which
Jam in the Den
covered the low part of the field south-east of New Alyth.
ALYTH COMMUNITY COUNCIL UPDATE
Welcome to this month’s Community Council update. We
hope you found last month’s article informative regarding the
business of the Community Council. This month I have three
main themes. The first short theme is on the community markets we have in The Square. The second is on the general
theme of education of community councillors, particularly
planning and multiple occupancy legislation. The last theme is
on Community Council minutes.
So far this year we have had two community markets
in The Square. The markets are run by Nick and Sue Cole
through their role with Strathmore and the Glens Community
Market. We need more feedback on the value of these markets to you the people of Alyth and its surrounds. The Community Council takes a stall at the markets to facilitate a Community Council surgery. If you are looking for any particular
type of stall to be attracted to the town then please just ask us
and we will try to fix it. We need your support to keep attracting the stall holders back to Alyth so please attend, take a look
around and make any purchases that you can. The markets
will be in Alyth on only two more dates this year, Saturday
26th September and Saturday 28th November. So, after your
Saturday morning coffee in Airlie Street Halls pop down to the
market and see what they have on offer. Many stalls have
seasonal themes so November may provide you with the
opportunity to make the early Christmas purchase and save a
long trip to Perth or Dundee.
I move on now to the theme of community councillor
education. Changes in legislation of all kinds occur throughout
the year. It’s not in a constant state of change but it does
mean that as community councillors we need to be alive to the
changes that occur and how they affect the people of the
town. You may have seen the entry in last month’s Voice
explaining some of the changes in the country’s planning
legislation. There are vast changes coming in to effect regarding planning. Perth and Kinross Council are providing training
sessions for community councillors to help them understand
the changes and the role of community councils in planning
applications thereafter. Initially, four of our councillors will
attend these training sessions to get to grips with the changes.
Still on the theme of education. It became apparent
to us as a council, as the result of a recent application in town
for a licence for multiple occupancy, that none of us knows
enough about this theme to make definitive comment based
on sound knowledge of the subject. As a result of this we
contacted Perth and Kinross Council and they have agreed to
two of their members of staff attending a Community Council
meeting and providing us with an educational type input. I am
advised that one of their team will have a housing background
and the other will have an adult care service background. This
session will take place in the Town Hall on 23rd September
from 7pm. As with all Community Council meetings members
of the public are welcome to attend. Can I please remind you
of two things if you intend to come along. This will be a normal
Community Council night. We have our normal business to
conduct within the two hours of the meeting. If there is a large
turnout I may be forced to curtail questioning of the P&K
representatives to allow us to complete our normal business.
Secondly, that there is a protocol involved as explained in last
month’s Voice, please write to the Secretary of the Community
Council with your request/question to ensure you are heard –
Community Council Secretary, Sanjay Samani, c/o Alyth Town
Hall, Albert Street, Alyth. Sanjay needs to get these letters 7
days before the meeting to ensure you are included on the
agenda. This is a golden opportunity for you to ask questions
of the people who have knowledge of the subject of multiple
occupancy issues and all of the side issues there from so we
encourage you to come along and hear what is said.
Lastly, at our last meeting we agreed that we needed
to make wider contact with the public and share the minutes of
our meetings with a wider audience. I know minutes do not
seem appealing as a read to most people but the idea is to try
not to re-invent the wheel. By sharing minutes on the Internet
people from far and wide get the chance to read them and
should we be going down an avenue they have already travelled then hopefully they will contact us with advice for the
do’s and don’ts of that particular route. To this end Alyth Community Council minutes will now be attached to
Alyth Musical Society will begin rehearsals for their 2010
Production of Cole Porter's 'Anything Goes' on Monday 14th
September in the Ogilvy Rooms at 7.30pm. The action is
mainly set on the SS America as it travels from New York to
England. Numbers include 'Blow Gabriel', 'It's de Lovely',
'Anything Goes', 'Friendship' and 'I Get a Kick out of You.' It
is always great to have fresh faces in the company and new
members are most welcome. We especially need men in the
20-40 age range. We will also need some youngsters in this
production but the age range will be 12-16 and depending on
numbers, auditions may be necessary to find around 6 talented performers. Even at this stage planning has been
taking place with the production team signed up along with
other backstage positions and tasks organised.
ALYTH & DISTRICT PIPE BAND NEWS
On 25th July, the Band travelled to Greenock for the
2009 RSPBA European Pipe Band Championships. We are
really proud to have been placed 4th in our heat and 8th
overall out of 30 Bands in our grade. An excellent result for
such a young, recently formed band, that reflects the hard
work and commitment of all the band members. The band
enjoyed playing on home ground in Alyth Square on Saturday 1st August, which was sponsored by BEPTA. We played
at Strathallan Highland Games at Bridge of Allan on Sunday
2nd August. On Wednesday 9th August the band took part in
an "Entertainment Evening" for the competitors and spectators at The Scottish 6 Day Orienteering Championships at
Perth Racecourse.
And finally… We would like to thank Stuart Milne of Parkside
Road, who has very generously donated a vintage "Message
Bike" that he has painstakingly restored. We would welcome
suggestions from readers as to how the bike can best be
used to raise money for band funds. Emails to:
[email protected]
Can we also remind folk that we are holding a coffee
morning on Saturday 24th October in Airlie Street Hall and
any offers of help on the day or donations of produce for the
cake and candy stall or raffle and tombola prizes, would be
very much appreciated. We can collect beforehand by arrangement. Once again, all band members and helpers would like to sincerely thank all those in Alyth and District, without whose support we could not survive!
ALYTH’S HISTORY
IN THE MAKING
After a year of planning, the Alyth Family History Project
was launched on 1st August. The Parish Church, Museum,
and Library have joined together to provide a free family
history resource. Enthusiastic visitors congregated in the
Parish Church for the launch, and enjoyed browsing
through the ‘Auld Alyth’ photographs, burial records,
almanacs, maps and gazettes, as well as handling
museum objects and receiving genealogy advice from
Perth & Kinross Council’s Family History Department, AK
Bell Local Studies, and archivists from the Black Watch
Museum and Perth & Kinross Council.
Speaking as coordinator of the project, Irene Robertson
commented “We are delighted this project has been so
positively received. More than 1,000 photographs of Alyth
people, school, businesses, events and views over the last
century have been received, and they continue to pour in.
It really is amazing what people keep in their bottom
drawers! And we’re delighted they do, because this
project’s longevity depends on building up the archive to
contain copies of everything related to Alyth and all the
generations already gone. There’s something very special
about collating, and essentially resurrecting, these Auld
Alyth photos for future generations to enjoy.
“Thanks to the generosity of a gentleman from Whitley
Bay with Alyth ancestors, Alyth Parish Records will be
available to view on microfilm from Sunday 6th
September. These records are extremely interesting,
dated 1623 to 1854 covering all births, marriages and
deaths. Add this to our exercise of extracting burial records
and photographing headstones, the project should be the
first port of call for any one researching their family tree.
However the project is just as interesting to locals, of all
ages, who love looking through old photos of familiar faces
and all things Alyth, especially as we need help in naming
and dating many of the photos.”
The project is FREE to the public thanks to funding by
the Scottish Community Foundation from the Scottish and
Southern Energy Drumderg Wind Farm Community
Benefit Fund, and Alyth Community Council. Further
details can be found on the church website
Following the public exhibition held earlier in the year,
Deveron Glenisla LLP has now submitted its outline planning application for development at Glenisla Golf Course.
The application for a major tourist, leisure and residential
facility in Alyth follows a six-month community consultation
programme that has demonstrated high levels of public
support for the project.
It is the intention of Deveron Glenisla LLP to respond to
all comments lodged with the Council during the course of
the application being processed. A follow-up public exhibition will take place during autumn of this year, with a view
to updating the local community and any interested parties
of how the application is progressing and re-engaging with
the local stakeholders.
Nick Somerville, Director of Glenisla Golf Course Ltd
added: “We are pleased to submit our planning application
to Perth and Kinross Council which will strengthen the
local economy, increase local investment and the tourism
profile of the areas. We are especially pleased to have a
significant level of community support behind us. Despite
the current economic climate we remain fully committed to
delivering this exciting development.”
The application reference is 09/01345/IPM and it can be
found online at Perth and Kinross Council website
www.pkc.gov.uk In addition, the application can be inspected at the Council Area Office, 46 Leslie Street, Blairgowrie and at Pullar House, 35 Kinnoull Street, Perth PH1
5GD. If you intend to inspect the application in person, it is
advisable to phone in advance on 01738 475 300.
LAST CHANCE…
Last chance to help Alyth secure £20,000 for the Scout hut
and Guide hut - help Alyth reach its energy reduction target.
As you know, since October 2008 Alyth has been involved in an Energy Challenge Project with Scottish and
Southern Energy to see if the community can reduce the
town’s electricity consumption by 10% within 2 years. SSE
has offered a community reward of about £20,000 to
spend on community energy projects if we reach this target. SSE has tried to help Alyth reach this target, by providing over 350 homes with smart meters, another 300 or
so homes with clip on energy cost monitors and providing
funding for a number of community events and promotional materials (such as the big banner you will have seen
next to The Square), but so far all our efforts have not
been enough! We have got close to our target a couple of
times (our highest reduction per month was -8.564% in
February 2009, closely followed by -8.383% in April 2009),
but recently we have tailed off.
September is our last chance to reach our target, and as
it was voted in a community survey at the Gala this year to
spend the reward money equally between the Scout hut
and the Guide hut on much needed energy efficiency
measures, then please, please do all you can to help reduce the town’s electricity usage throughout this month. Of
course, do not freeze or go on a diet of cold porridge, but
please do the little things that will all add up if we all do
them; switch off your lights when not in use, boil less water
in the kettle, change light bulbs, minimise use of high
wattage power tools etc.
I am sure we can do it if we all make a last concerted
effort! Clive Bowman
The Teddy Bears Trail
2009 which was sponsored
by Alyth & District Business
Association
was
a
competition that had been
designed for the young and
the young at heart. Teddy
once again arrived in Alyth, Scotland but this year his
trusty old car which was 10 years old had been giving
problems with a few parts falling off as he arrived in Alyth.
He had decided to make use of the Government’s new
“Scrap an old banger” scheme and buy a brand new car
while he was here.
Teddy could not decide what make or type of car to
purchase so businesses in Alyth to assist him were
displaying lots of different models in their windows.
The competition closed on the 31st of August. Please
hand all completed forms in to
J. & M. Kay, Ladies & Gents Hairdresser,
13 Airlie Street, Alyth by Wednesday 9th September.
We hope you all had fun completing the Teddy Bears Trail,
ALYTH GALA DAY UPDATE
I will get a telling off for starting with an apology, but here
goes, I apologise. There are a lot of dates in this article
concerning our future activities so please have your diaries
handy. Can I begin by advising you that the Gala Committee AGM will be held on Tuesday 29th September 2009 at
7pm in the Town Hall, Alyth. The Gala survives on the
input of local people, businesses, organisations and
groups. If you wish to help the town to do something different for the Gala in 2010 then please attend the AGM and
get involved. Don’t worry, you will not be asked to be
Chairperson or hold office (not in your first year anyway!)
so come along and make your voice heard.
On 4th August, we held our monthly meeting and set the
date for next year’s Gala Day, it will be Sunday 30th May
2010.
The existing Committee of around ten people have
already started forming plans for next year’s event. We
said on the last update that we needed to improve the
number of activities within the ring. We know that in 2010
we need to provide more entertainment for children. Some
of our group have visited Gala days across the breadth of
the country this year and already suggestions have been
made for possible attractions. It would be foolish to provide
a list of “possible attractions” at this time. We will keep you
updated by every means that we can. Quality attractions
cost lots of money and so we need to be creative with our
thinking for raising money.
For the 2010 event we have agreed that an initial non
returnable deposit will be taken from people who wish to
have a stall at the event. In the next update I will provide
you with a contact list and means of contact for those
members of the committee that have taken on different
roles for the 2010 event.
The issue of a car boot sale as part of the Gala Day was
discussed. It was agreed by those present at the meeting
that we maintain the theme we have at this time and so I
must inform you that there will again be no car boot sale at
next year’s event.
Our treasurer is working hard to ensure that she can
have a definitive ‘total raised’ as a result of the 2009 event.
We hope to be able to break down the financial awards to
the groups and organisations around town at our meeting
on 1st September. Once that list is agreed at committee
each organisation nominated will be contacted.
On Saturday 26th September 2009, we will be holding a
Coffee morning in the Airlie Street Hall. During the Coffee
morning the awards will be made to the groups and organisations identified. We would welcome everyone in for a
coffee and a chat that day. Please use the opportunity to
speak to any of our committee to make any suggestions
you may have for the 2010 event.
Stuart Clark, Alyth Gala Committee.
SANTA’S SLEIGH
CHIP SHOP WINDOW
Due to Perth and Kinross Council policy of
not allowing anything other than a private
motor vehicle to be stored in garages erected
on council sites i.e. the lockups at Springbank
Road, I find myself in the position of not being
able to accommodate the Santa Sleigh which
I am at present trying to restore and which at
present I have in one of my lockups.
Therefore is there anybody out there who can
help out by allowing me to store/renovate it
on their premises?
Ricky Don, Chairman
Between 18th and 24th August Voice readers will
have noticed the Chip Shop was closed due to a
family bereavement. Readers may also have
noticed that the Chip Shop window (facing Airlie
Street) was broken sometime overnight 21st/22nd
August. This was brought to the attention of the
Voice by a reader who was appalled and
disappointed at such a mindless act of
vandalism, never mind its insensitivity in the
circumstances. On behalf of Alyth townspeople,
we offer our condolences and support to the
Franceschi family returning to find their premises
have been vandalised.
THANKS - Robertson
I would like to thank everyone who attended
my surprise 50th on Sunday 26 July and for
all the gifts received. I hope everyone enjoyed
themselves as much as I did. Many thanks to
all the staff at the Burnside Inn for their
hospitality and food, and Sonnet 65 for the
music. Philip
THANKS - MacLeod
I would like to thank everyone for their cards,
true meaning of friendship over the last few
years. Alyth and its community hold a special
place in my heart, and for that I will be
eternally grateful. Angela
CAPTAIN GEORGE BRUCE CRICHTON
Captain G. Bruce Crichton, a former councillor on
Alyth Town Council, died on August 7th, aged 83. In
serving on the town council he was following in the
footsteps of his late father, Malcolm. Born in Alyth,
Captain Crichton did officer training with The Black
Watch before being commissioned in the Royal Scots.
From 1944 to 1947 he served in Palestine during the
troubles there.
From 1949 to 1966 he worked in Africa and among
his posts while abroad he was senior accountant with
the Cameroons Development Corporation, and held a
similar post with Nigerian Oil Mills. On returning to
Alyth he worked as company secretary with Thomas
Thomsons, who operated a mill in Blairgowrie.
Captain Crichton, a keen golfer, went on to become
secretary of Alyth Golf Club.
A bachelor, Captain Crichton’s funeral service took
place on August 14th at his home, Georgesville,
Cambridge Street, Alyth before interment in Alyth
Cemetery.
Dear Alyth Voice,
I am planning a trip to Alyth this October. My Great
Grandfather was Thomas Whitson McPherson and
was born in Alyth to David McPherson and Mary
Ramsey, as near as I can find out.
My 2 sisters and I are planning this trip so that I
might do some research on our family.
Would it be possible to put this information in The
Voice prior to our arrival, with what family history I
have, in hope that someone in Alyth might have
additional information and contact me before we
arrive or arrange to meet with us while we are there.
Any help or direction in this endeavour that you
might be able to provide would be most appreciated.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS WEEK
After a really successful event in 2008, The
Perthshire Open Studios is back again, boasting
more exciting exhibitors and lots going on to keep
you entertained. Primrose Hill Studio, just outside
Alyth, is one of the venues again this year and is
offering lots of new things to tempt you along
through the Den! We will have our usual quirky
collection of homeware textiles, fashion accessories
and gifts, along with two exciting new exhibitors and
some live Scottish music on opening day.
Diane Thomson has a keen eye for photography
and is a wonderful artist. Inspired by her rural surroundings, her collection of cards and feltwork will
be a fitting addition to the Primrose Hill collection. Katie Whitson makes the most fabulous felt
jewellery and ceramics in jewel like colours, aswell
as putting together a great collection of vintage bits
and pieces. If you're enjoying the vintage revival
there'll be something hiding in a basket to tempt
you! Between the three of us, we're also hoping to
have free range eggs, garden produce and cut
flowers for sale. The exhibition in the Studio will be
open from Saturday 5th September through until
Sunday 13th September, open daily from 10am 5pm. The live Scottish music will be from around
midday on 5th September. We are venue number 5
on the Orange route in the Perthshire Open Studios
brochure. Come along past the Den of Alyth and
carry on along this road for a couple of miles. You'll
see our red and white sign on the left hand side,
turn left here and come into the driveway to park.
THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY
What on earth does that mean? For me – it means
not just using the recycling bins when at Peel Farm
Coffee Shop, but using the Post Office for pensions,
mail stuff & car tax; grocers, butcher, bakeries in
Alyth; fruit & veg in great Blairgowrie Farm Shop;
insurance at I&D Airlie Street; travel arrangements
at Blairgowrie ‘Travel Bar’; supporting local coffee
mornings and cafés, Ron’s book sales & Guides’
charity shop, and lots of ither guid happenings. Aye
– but what do I do? Recently got a reply from Canada’s Prime Minister office regarding the inadequate and degrading wheelchair facilities at Toronto
Airport. I won’t benefit but hopefully ithers will. Have
ye noticed the magical appearance of white parking
lines? They are there to stop vehicles parking
where wheelchairs access the pavements. Sorry, I
never thought, but I will now.
There are 23 million bicycles in the UK and it was
recently estimated that every year another 2.75 million
new ones are sold across the UK, some of which are
bought to keep up with the latest fashion. So when the
unwanted bikes are discarded, most are either repairable
or have a number of salvageable parts on them that can
be reused rather than dumping in landfill. Through a
partnership between Perth & Kinross Council and The
Bike Station, old or unwanted bikes can be recycled at
four of the Council’s Recycling Centres (Pitlochry,
Aberfeldy, Kinross and Friarton in Perth) for refurbishing
before they are sold back to the community at affordable
prices and with a three-month guarantee.
The Bike Station holds regular recycled bicycle sales
across Perth and Kinross and as Alyth is a Climate Action
Town, keen to promote cycling for fun and as a way of
commuting, and the Alyth Hub (the local youth group) is
eager to increase the farming town’s reuse and recycling
opportunities, the next event is being held here. Visit the
Bike Station’s Recycled Bicycle Sale in Alyth’s Health
Centre car park on Saturday 5th September between
11am and 1pm. The majority of bikes for sale will be for
children but there will also be some adult bikes available.
Qualified mechanics will also be on hand to fix broken
bikes, and any unwanted bikes can be donated for
recycling.
To tie in with promoting a healthy lifestyle and safe
commuting, The Bike Station will simultaneously be
running a Cycle Proficiency Training Session on Saturday
in the grounds of the Alyth Fire Station. The Bike Station
is Scotland's first Cycling Scotland accredited Cycle
Training Centre and while anyone is welcome to attend
this training session, it will primarily be aimed at encouraging children and young people, including those from the
Alyth Hub, to cycle safely. For more information, visit
Alyth 2020 is a steering group gathering the views of Alyth
residents about the future of Alyth. We want to know what
you would like the town to be like in the future and the kind
of services you would like. We hope to gather enough
information to help with planning future activity and making
the best use of funding sources.
Workshops for Community Vision
As part of our consultation, we are contacting all community and voluntary groups in Alyth to gather their views
individually and collectively. We are inviting all groups to
send a representative, to a brief workshop on either 9th or
16th September from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the Airlie Street
Hall. At this workshop, they will be able to contribute to
the information gathering process and to discuss with
others the future of Alyth. They can also acquire materials
to help run a similar event for their own group.
If your group has not heard from us and would like to
take part, please do let us know the name of your representative and which workshop they would like to attend,
using the contact details below.
We look forward to meeting with all the groups at the
workshops.
Street By Street Place Check
We are also conducting a Street By Street “Place Check”.
We are walking down every street in Alyth, identifying
things that we like, don’t like and what can be improved.
The first walk about identified cracked pavements, excellent green spaces, allotments, doors needing painting and
lovely colourful planting by the Council and Alyth in Bloom.
We have been meeting every Saturday at 1pm in the
Market Square. If you would like to get involved, please
come along on either 29th August or 5th September. We
need everyone to get involved and would appreciate your
thoughts.
BARNARDO’S BOXES
The Boxes of the ‘Out of School’ Barnardo’s Group
which includes a few boxes from Newtyle and
Blairgowrie were opened recently.
A total of £477.57 was realised. This money will
go to help the most vulnerable children and young people transforming their lives
and fulfil their potential.
Barnardo’s helps those young people to overcome severe disadvantage by
enabling them to address their various problems and to support others while they
tackle the challenges of disability.
Many thanks to my friends who came along to help count the money (mainly 1p,
2p and 5p coins) from each individual box and to the many loyal supporters of
Barnardo’s some of whom have been donating to Barnardo’s for nearly 50 years.
If anyone would like a box or who has a box in the house and would like to bring
it back into use, please contact me on telephone number 632456.
RUTHVEN FESTIVAL
ANNOUNCES ‘FABULOUS’ PROGRAMME
FOR FINAL CONCERT OF 2009
Carpenter’s Cottage, Pitnacree Street, Alyth, PH118DY
The final concert in Ruthven Parish Festival’s 20th anniversary year will be a chamber
recital featuring the work of Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Bruch.
The September 6 recital will begin with Mozart’s quite magnificent String Quartet in
C, which will be performed by violinists Barbara Geller and John Cheyne; Stewart McMurdo and Sean Thomas on viola; and cellist Donald Gordon.
This will be followed by what promises to be yet another virtuoso performance by soprano Alison McDonald, who will be treating the audience to a selection
of songs by Brahms and Fauré.
Making a very welcome return to the Ruthven Parish Festival will be the festival’s original Musical Director, Alan Jacques, who will certainly have a busy
afternoon. Alan will be accompanying Alison McDonald and clarinettist Robert Thomson in a performance of Romanze by Schubert, which was performed by
the same highly-accomplished trio at the first Ruthven Festival in 1990. Alan will also be teaming up with Robert Thomson and cellist Phillip Maltin for an
eagerly-awaiting recital of a series of pieces by the German composer Max Bruch.
“This programme promises to be a fabulous celebration of the music that has been appreciated and adored by Ruthven Parish Festival audiences for 20
years,” said Evelyn Hood, Secretary of Ruthven Parish Festival. “This chamber recital will be a wonderful way to conclude our 20th anniversary season.”
The September 6 Ruthven Parish Festival Chamber Recital starts with a wine reception at 3pm, with the recital commencing at 3.30pm.
Admission is by a donation of £16, which includes the wine reception. There is no charge for school age children. For more information about Ruthven
Parish Festival, or to reserve programmes for the recital, call 01828 632558 or email [email protected].
HERE COMES THE RAIN…
Rain, rain, rain! But at least this summer has been warmer
than it was last year. The swifts have flown away to Africa
and I envy them their good luck. The chiff-chaffs must
have left while we were away because I haven’t heard
them since the first days of August.
As I drive about the country I note that the barley is
ready for combining on many farms in Strathmore and I
wish for a spell of good weather to see the hairst safely
gathered in, though I suppose that it is still early enough
for the spring barley. Nothing is bleaker than to see crops
going down under the rain. When I visited Peter Grewar’s
establishment at East Ardler on a Monday recently, to
collect a bag of brock tatties for my wild boar, they were
busy driving grain into the stores and I felt a sense of
progress. This feeling lasted until I saw the dark clouds
massed over the hills to the North and the rain began
again as I drove out of Alyth on my way back to Bamff. It
looks as though the harvest will be a snatchy affair with big
drying
costs.
I haven’t visited the Wet Wood (original home of the first
beavers at Bamff) much lately, although a small new dam
there is evidence of activity. On a walk through the open
part of the Wet Wood I came upon a sad sight, though not
sad perhaps for those who curse moles for their activities
on their lawns, or grass fields.
A mole lay dead on the ground before me, its arms
spread out. As I looked at its once sleek coat something
stirred: a black beetle with orange stripes climbed out from
under the corpse. I pulled my camera from the rucksack,
but by the time the lens had focussed the beast had disappeared under the mole. I waited. The beetle reappeared
and I waited some more, hoping it would stand still for a
moment; but it was restless and kept moving about. Eventually, impatiently, I turned the mole over with my stick,
and uncovered my beetle and another beetle of the same
kind. I noticed then that the mole had been lying in a small
hollow and turned it back to allow the beetles to get on
with their work.
What were these beetles: some kind of scavenging
species, perhaps? A quick consultation later with Collins
‘Field Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe’
told me that I had been looking at members of a species of
sexton beetle. As their name suggests, they make their
living by burying the corpses of small animals. It seems
that they can scent one from up to a mile away. Having
located a corpse they fly to it and bury it. Once the body is
buried the female lays her eggs nearby. While waiting for
the eggs to hatch the female beetle lives off the carcass
that she and her mate interred, and when the eggs hatch
she takes bits of the corpse to the larvae to eat until they
are big enough to fend for themselves.
Perhaps by the time you read this we shall be enjoying
an Indian summer and all memory of past wetness will be
obliterated.
GLENISLA CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUB
Glenisla Classic Vehicle Club were again blessed with good
weather for their Bar-B-Que on Sunday 2 August. Unsurprising, as
“it never rains on the golf course”, so it is, or doesn’t in the Glen.
Around 120 vehicles of all types, sizes, and ages, from 1930 to
present day, ran over the hills and through the glens.
Thanks to Jim MacFarlane for organizing the hill run for tractors
and 4/4s and military vehicles, and Bob Alexander, the road run.
Both runs were most scenic and enjoyable. The run for the classics and motorcycles were taken round by the Dalmunzie Hotel
who kindly supplied teas/coffee and short bread. Our thanks to
them for their hospitality.
When the vehicles returned, the Bar- B -Q was ready and
hamburgers were supplied free of charge to all. The judges had a
wonderful display and choice of vehicles to inspect and the first
BIG RESPONSE TO
ACAT ENERGY PROJECT
Alyth Climate Action Town (ACAT) has received a great
response from the people of Alyth to its Street-by-Street
Energy Audit and Insulation project.
‘To date almost 400 questionnaires have been returned
with more arriving at our Airlie St office every day. In
round figures, almost 40% of the homes in Alyth have
responded and will receive advice and help in reducing
their energy bills and improving the insulation of their
homes’.
The project has now moved on to its second phase with
homes receiving their Home Energy Reports and ACAT’s
especially trained Energy Auditors visiting homes. All
homes that have submitted a questionnaire should receive
a visit and energy report in the next 4 to 6 weeks.
‘Having received such a large response to our questionnaires has posed us with the problem of getting around
everyone quickly. Our team of 7 Energy Auditors will be
working flat out over the next weeks to make sure they get
to everyone. The Home Energy Reports are useful but
can be confusing and sometimes a little misleading, our
EA’s are trained to interprete the reports and provide practical information in a understandable way.
The home insulation part of the project is now up and
running with 9 home insulation contractors having been
asked to submit tenders for undertaking basic insulation
works. It is hoped that a successful contractor will be
announced in the next week. Information on the insulation
project can be obtained from any of the EA’s or ACAT’s
Office.
The ACAT office is open 10am till noon on Wednesday’s and Saturdays and 6pm till 8pm on Thursdays.
Further information on this project can be obtained from
NEW DIRECT BUS SERVICE FOR AVIVA
EMPLOYEES FROM ALYTH
A new transport initiative was launched on Monday 17th August 2009 for Aviva employees and the public, which will
provide a direct bus service to and from the Aviva offices in
Perth. The new bus route has been added with the help of a
subsidy from Aviva and Perth & Kinross Council.
In addition to the new bus services, a very successful car
share project is also in place at Aviva that now has 100 dedicated places.
The ideas were progressed through extensive work between
Aviva, Perth & Kinross Council, Stagecoach and Pegasus
Travel to provide an integrated transport solution.
Ian Ferguson, Director of Underwriting, based at Aviva
Perth, said: "This initiative is a major step forward in addressing the transport issues faced by Aviva employees and the
wider community in Perth and Kinross. We now have a bus
network that increases the transport options for employees
which will mean there is less dependence on the car. Fewer
cars on the roads will mean less congestion, which will benefit
everyone in the local community. This has very much been a
joint initiative involving Aviva, Perth & Kinross Council, Stagecoach and Pegasus Travel. I'd like to particularly thank the
Aviva focus group for all their hard work as well as all the
other parties for helping to make this happen."
Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Miller commented: "I
am delighted that the Council has been able to work in partnership with Aviva, one of the areas main local employers, to
significantly enhance local bus service provision to their offices at Pitheavlis. I am particularly pleased to welcome the
new service to/from Alyth, departing at 7:30am and
returning from Aviva at 17:20. This means that it's never
been easier to take the bus for greener, smarter travel to
work. I hope the bus services will be well received by Aviva
employees. In the months ahead, the Council will jointly
monitor the new timetables and consider any feedback that is
received."
To mark the launch of the bus service, guests from Stagecoach, Pegasus Travel and P&K Council attended a ceremony at Aviva's Pitheavlis offices on 17th August 2009.
LANDS OF LOYAL
© V. Webster
We are delighted to announce that
the garden at the Lands of Loyal
has been welcomed as a new member of Scotland’s Garden Scheme.
It is a great source of pride as this
prestigious group includes some of
Scotland’s finest gardens. The
scheme is a charitable organisation
established in 1931. Money is
raised primarily from special open
days, plant sales and from its well
© V. Webster known ‘Yellow Book’ (Gardens of
Scotland) priced at £5.50, published
each year at the beginning of December.
The Lands of Loyal garden is very well designed on two
main south facing terraces and it has been a great pleasure of mine, in this our first year at the hotel, to see the
borders reveal themselves in their full glory. Of course a
year, is merely equivalent to 5 minutes in the history of the
garden. The credit belongs to the Howell family; we will
just try to do our very best, with the able and willing help
from Pawel, to keep up the good work.
Anyone may come and view the Lands of Loyal gardens
at any time, various plants are available for sale from the
MONO BLOCK DRIVEWAYS AND PATIOS – INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
The installation of a new monoblock driveway represents a major investment in your home. A professionally
installed and maintained driveway will add value to your home, often well in excess of the installation costs.
However, it’s important to remember that as well as the initial investment in time and money there is an
ongoing investment in the maintenance of your drive.
INSTALLATION
At this point it’s worth looking at the technical aspects of laying a monoblock driveway. Once the drainage
issues have been considered then laying the drive can continue. Essentially, the blocks are laid on a pre
prepared bed of compacted hardcore and a layer of sharp sand that has been screed (smoothed) to a
height that will allow the monoblock to sit level. The blocks can be laid in a variety of patterns. What’s more,
you can add even more impressive effects with practical and decorative kerbs and planter features.
Once the blocks are laid, fine kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints, this process is referred to as Dry
Sand Jointing. Once all the joints are full, any surplus sand is swept off and the job is complete. This is a
vital aspect of the build as the sand locks and stabilises the driveway. These joints should be checked after
4-6 weeks, as there is always some slight settlement that will result in a small number of empty or partiallyempty joints. Additional kiln-dried sand should be brushed-in as required. Dry Sand Jointing isn’t complicated however it has to be done correctly if the build is to be a success.
MAINTENENCE
Protecting your investment is worthwhile. A clean well maintained driveway is an asset whilst a stained,
moss covered driveway is at best uninviting and at worst an accident waiting to happen.
The most common problem with driveways is moss, algae or weeds. The kiln-dried sand makes an ideal
growing medium and it’s not long before the joints start to fill with organic growth. The other main problem
is the loss of kiln dried sand from the joints. This can happen because of settlement, insect infestation or
the effects of the weather. Just like your car you should be giving your driveway an annual MOT that consists of a deep clean powerwash, fresh kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints and finally sprayed with a
driveway sealant. The sealant not only improves the look of your drive but also helps prevent sand loss and
also acts as a barrier to moss, algae and weeds.
Deep cleaning your driveway is the tricky bit. It is worth paying a reputable contractor to come and powerwash the drive. Commercial powerwash machines are not cheap but deliver the high pressure (around 200
bar) required to clean stains and remove debris. Once the driveway is clean then save money by doing the
Dry Sand Jointing and Sealing yourself. Kiln-dried sand can be bought from the local hardware store for
around £5.00.Sealant is about £35.00 for 5 litres. Just pick a warm dry day, follow the instructions and job
should be finished within a few hours. Leaving you with a driveway that is the envy of your neighbors.
L’ETAPE DU TOUR 2009
Well against the advice of my therapist from the last time I did this event in 2006, the entry form was sent in
for the 2009 race which this year finished on the giant of Provence, the “Mont Ventoux” mountain, which at
about 6272ft towers over the landscape. It is one of the more iconic climbs of the tour and in 1966 claimed
the life of one of Britain’s best cyclists Tommy Simpson. Mont Ventoux's reputation has one French historian
even referring to it menacingly as "a god of evil, a despot of cyclists"!
The road up to the summit is about 13 miles in distance and feels a bit like climbing the Balloch all the way
up. Lance Armstrong, 7 times winner of the Tour De France describes this as the hardest climb the tour
covers.
To get to this point though I set off from Montelimar at 7am along with 8,500 others, the total distance for
the day was about 107 miles with 4 other minor climbs, one of them still over 3000ft to cover along the way.
Some of the roads were quite narrow which caused bottlenecks and several accidents, combined with this
and the soaring temperatures causing riders to collapse with heat exhaustion, the emergency services were
kept busy and you could hear the constant wail of sirens. Because of the heat you had to take advantage of
the food and water stations along the way which turned into a sea of empty water bottles, banana skins,
energy bar wrappers and burnt out riders!
After a gruelling 9hrs and 15 mins I made it to the finish at the top of Ventoux, it was with great self
satisfaction I looked back down the mountain and thought to myself I have just completed one of the toughest
stages of the toughest race in the world. As I crossed the line I was given my medal and freewheeled down
the other side to meet the rep from the company I travelled with who said these magic words to me “there’s
beer in the chiller box”!
When I returned home I got another prize from my family, a t-shirt with the words printed on it “THE FAT
BOY FROM ALYTH MADE IT UP THE VENTOUX” not a lot more you can say about that!
I have raised £900 for Macmillan cancer support, so thanks to everyone who sponsored me.
JAM IN THE DEN 2009
Hi Folks
Well how lucky can we get!! After all the rain that we had there were times when we
did not think it was going to happen but then the sun shone and the crowds came ,
and a good time was had by all! We enjoyed a great day with bungee runs and
bouncy castles supplied by Burgerseeds Perth, BBQ supplied by Michelle, Louise
and Francis-Ann, and refreshments galore from Jim and Ann at The Blackbird Inn.
However, big thanks to all the 9 bands who played for FREE(!) – The Thin End, My
Virtual Vanity, The Shamshadows, Spirit of Woodstock, Kev & Pete, Coast, Wedge
& Co, Mutleys and Sonnet65, all of whom helped make the 12th Jam in the Den
such a great day.
Special thanks to Ivor Soundhire Scotland and his crew for the PA system, J.W.
Wheatley & Sons for the electrics, Geordie & Gary McGibbon for the berry barrels,
and lastly but very much not least, to Torith who supply the stage for us for free,
and the guys who give up their time to help build and dismantle it - you do a great
job. Eck Carle, Lawrence and Allan MacFarlane, David Robertson, Robbie and
Dougie Johnstone, Oscar and Storm and Philip Robertson.
Big thanks to William Simpson, The Adamsons and The Wheatleys and Dawn
and Kenzi for getting out of your beds very early on the Sunday and helping us
clean up it was very much appreciated. We would like to take this opportunity to
thank the following people for all their help over the past few months and to all our
sponsors: Spar, Costcutter, Megs Minimarket, the Alyth Hotel, Airlie St Bar, Burnside Inn, G.A. Davidson Joiners, Strathmore Golf Centre, I&D Insurance, Alyth
Community Council, Sandy McCurdy - posters, Alyth Voice, Scotloo, Perth & Kinross Council, G4S Security, St.Johns First Aid. Tayside Police, Solutions, Zak Taxis
and The Tavern Ardler. Firewardens: Layla MacFarlane, Gillian Shaw, Nikki Low.
The feedback after the Jam has been extremely positive. The event was attended by over 1,000 people and the atmosphere was ‘jammin’! Police and safety
measures were in place, and the behaviour was excellent for a public event such as
this. We know there were many visitors from further a field to the Jam, and everyone should be very proud of the impression these visitors would have taken away of
Alyth and its people, not least its Jam in the Den! So thank you everyone for making
the Jam so successful.
Lastly I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee members for
all their hard work over the past 5 months - you did a great job. Here’s to Jam in the
Den 2010!!!
WE ARE ONE!!
Alyth's very own instore bakery has now been trading for one year! Steven and
Ashley would like to thank all customers, staff, local businesses and clubs who have
helped make our first year so successful. When we started out our main aim for our
first year was to have 90% of our products produced instore from scratch using raw
materials. Never did we think that we would actually be producing 99% instore within
6 months!
This has all been thanks to you, our customers, who have supported their local
baker! Such has been the huge demand for freshly produced rolls, bread, meat
products, filled rolls, cakes and fresh cream cakes, we have employed an apprentice
baker. A big thank you must also go to our staff, most of whom are local known faces
in the area, for their support and commitment to the job.
In the next few months, new counters will be installed allowing us to expand our
product range further and the shop itself will be taking on a whole new look. We also
have some new initiatives planned for next year!!
Thanks again, Steven & Ashley
