Happy Thanksgiving, Central FL Hoops Fans!
Welcome to Apopka High School, home of the
Blue Darters. This year, we are proud to continue
and expand the six-year tradition of the Metro
vs. Florida Challenge, one of the state’s premiere
showcases of high school basketball talent.
Once again, our event spans three days pitting
16 of the best teams representing the Orlando
Metro Conference and its proud basketball
heritage and tradition against 21 different teams
from around the state of Florida.
Please be sure to visit our website, MetroVsFL.
com, throughout the event. You will find
expanded full-color profiles of each participating
team as well as live updates on scores. A QR
code on each page in this program will link you
directly to that team’s online profile using the
camera on your smartphone or tablet. Come
back after the event to see full statistics posted
from all 21 games.
The Metro Conference represents a collection
of schools, faculty, staff, students and parents
that are outstanding in so many ways. Athletic
excellence is one of the hallmarks of our
conference and our area—on a yearly basis,
Metro Conference schools are among the state’s
best in every sport, especially men’s basketball.
This three-day showcase provides Central
Florida basketball fans an incredible opportunity
to see the best basketball in the entire state as
these talented teams begin their journey to a
hopeful Final Four run to Lakeland.
We believe this event already is among the
best in Florida if not the Southeast, and we
endeavor to make it even better in the future. We
especially want to thank Superintendent Barbara
Jenkins and Area Superintendent John Wright
for their support of our vision and efforts.
We also are indebted to the countless supporters
of basketball in the Apopka community that
will be making this event successful. So many
people have given time, energy and all means
of support over the past five years in helping
to establish an enduring legacy for this event.
We are also grateful for the many coaches,
parents, administrators, and volunteers for our
participating teams that have worked tirelessly to
build basketball programs seeking to be a model
of success on and off the court.
Enjoy the basketball and the blessings of your
family this Thanksgiving season!

Following a district semifinal finish, the Grenadiers have only one returning starter from last
year’s 9-senior team. With senior center Tyrell
Whitby anchoring the defense and the offensive
prowess of sophomore Ish Muhammed and junior Alex Montanez, the Grenadiers look to compete in one of the toughest districts in the state.

SEASON PREVIEW
The Dr. Phillips Panthers basketball team enters
the season having to replace all five starters from
last year’s squad, but that doesn’t mean any of the
team goals have changed. The faces change, but
the program standards, goals, and expectations do
not. A trio of seniors will lead this year’s squad.
6'6" senior forward Justin Tucker will be counted
on heavily along with seniors Jaquarious Bargnare
and Richard McKenzie. All are returning varsity
players. Junior Nick Smith will also be one of the
Panthers key contributors along with sophomore
guards Daniel Love and Je’Quan Burton. About
half the team plays varsity football so DP may be
short-handed at the Metro vs. Florida Challenge
depending on football playoff results, but this is a
team that can compete for and accomplish all of
our team goals when at full strength.

The Red Devils start the season with seven key
players still in football and all others making
their varsity debut. Expect a deep rotation of
guards to put up a strong defense. The return of
Jurmeil Battle and the addition of JD Brown will
give Kathleen some perimiter punch. Look for
Chris Williams to put points on the board each
night and Zaye Riettie to have a big senior year.

Boone returns from a 20 win season and trip
to the regional finals. This year’s season will be
led by lone senior Tyler Colson. The schedule
is one of the toughest in the state, loaded with
great teams and tournaments. Source Hoops has
ranked the Braves’ backcourt as one of the top
in Central FL, with two ferocious combo guards,
Jordan Goodson and Justin Butler, and lights out
shooting by Colson and Jordan Morales.

Asst. Coaches: Pietkiewicz, Ross, Lloyd, Campbell, Poteat · Last Season: 22-7 (8-0) · Dist. Champion · MVFC Record: 3-2
SEASON PREVIEW
The Trojans ended last season on a perfect district
record that led to a district championship and
a #1 SourceHoops/FABC ranking, but they lost
to Dr. Phillips in the first round of the playoffs.
Graduation took six seniors, two of whom were
nationally ranked, but the Trojans remain optimistic. This season, despite having just one senior
on the roster, Evans looks to gain experience with
a solid junior class led by Kimani Binder and
Ickson Masson. Corey Kaiser, Jordan Collins and
Jamehl Williams will also help provide leadership
for this perennially solid team which is no stranger to the state finals. Evans’ own 8A-3 district and
neighboring District 4 are stocked with powerhouses, but Coach Gordon will still be looking to
take the Trojans to compete for a fourth straight
district championship in his first year at Evans!

Jones returns two seniors and two juniors from
last year’s squad. The Tigers had a tough season
in a tough district last year but look to rebuild
behind the talents of seniors Jerry Cantave, Cam
Saunders, Amar Nelson, Cedric Jackson, and
Stacey Lawson. They also hope to be carried by
a deep team that includes four juniors and two
sophomores, which should stabilize the personnel and give the Tigers an opportunity to build
a program for long-term success. This season’s
schedule includes two tournament appearances this game will match them against a tough Sickles
program, and the Cancer Awareness Classic in
January will test them against Colonial. Combined with their regular season games, the Tigers
hope these trials will prepare them for what is
sure to be a challenging district tournament.

SEASON PREVIEW
New coach Willis McPhee returns five
members of last year’s team hoping to
build East River into a strong program
in a tough district. With just four seniors
and three underclassmen, the roster is
dominated by juniors who will need to
step up and take a more dominant leadership role in an overall young program.
The bright side is that East River has a
solid future with players who will have
an opportunity to gain experience in a
schedule that would test the strongest of
teams as the Falcons try to make some
serious noise in their district.

Last year, the Cougars started from scratch with
only one player with minimal varsity experience.
University also had some very young guys playing major roles. They expect to be in the second
year of that process but early indications are that
the guys are coming along at a faster pace than
anticipated.
The Cougars lost eight games last year in which
they were leading with two minutes remaining.
This year they should win a few more of those
games now that the boys have a little more experience. University is looking to play some exciting
ball and also looking forward to another great
team effort this year.

The Dr. Phillips Panthers basketball team enters
the season having to replace all five starters from
last year’s squad, but that doesn’t mean any of the
team goals have changed. The faces change, but
the program standards, goals, and expectations do
not. A trio of seniors will lead this year’s squad.
6'6" senior forward Justin Tucker will be counted
on heavily along with seniors Jaquarious Bargnare
and Richard McKenzie. All are returning varsity
players. Junior Nick Smith will also be one of the
Panthers key contributors along with sophomore
guards Daniel Love and Je’Quan Burton. About
half the team plays varsity football so DP may be
short-handed at the Metro vs. Florida Challenge
depending on football playoff results, but this is a
team that can compete for and accomplish all of
our team goals when at full strength.

SEASON PREVIEW
With only one starter returning from last year’s

This year’s Panthers will be talented but young. It
may take a bit for the team to come together, but
they will look to defend their district title and get
deep into the playoffs once again this year. Sharp
shooting Brendan Likely and smooth point guard
Austin Banks will lead this year’s Panther team
on what promises to be a grueling schedule.

Defense will be the main focus, and this team will

The Saints look to build on a successful season

The Trojans ended last season on a perfect district
record that led to a district championship and
a #1 SourceHoops/FABC ranking, but they lost
to Dr. Phillips in the first round of the playoffs.
Graduation took six seniors, two of whom were
nationally ranked, but the Trojans remain optimistic. This season, despite having just one senior
on the roster, Evans looks to gain experience with
a solid junior class led by Kimani Binder and
Ickson Masson. Corey Kaiser, Jordan Collins and
Jamehl Williams will also help provide leadership
for this perennially solid team which is no stranger to the state finals. Evans’ own 8A-3 district and
neighboring District 4 are stocked with powerhouses, but Coach Gordon will still be looking to
take the Trojans to compete for a fourth straight
district championship in his first year at Evans!

went on to the University of Central Florida
after graduating from Liberty Christian Prep

6'3" senior point guard Alberto Moreno, who

SEASON PREVIEW
East Ridge returns just two seniors from last
year’s squad in what will be a difficult-to-predict
year in terms of playoff outcomes. Thanks to this
year’s redistricting, none of the members of 7A-5
were playoff contenders in that classification last
year. (Only Lake Minneola made the playoffs,
but it was in 6A.) This leaves the postseason wide
open for any team to stake their claim, and the
Knights want to be that team. After graduating
four seniors from last year’s roster, East Ridge
reloads behind the leadership of Rashaun Jackson, Brandon Mills, Darwin Morales, Brian Leon,
Omar Morales, Justin Blake, and Damian Santucci. In spite of the senior-heavy squad, the Knights
have plenty of underclassmen in the ranks to
maintain continutity and build the program up
to perennial success.
