It’s nearly here! In only a short time, the 2014 Rose of the Shires will be upon us. I apologise for the delay in getting this month’s edition of More Graffiti out to you but we have been concentrating on getting the run right! The great news here is that we have secured a major sponsor for the event - Scenic & Continental Car Tours - a company already known to a great many classic car enthusiasts around the country for organising fantastic trips throughout the UK and Europe, especially tailored for classic cars! Anyone who is able to offer their assistance during the day is most welcome to contact either Michael Port or myself. If you are thinking of entering but haven’t submitted an entry form yet, again, contact us as soon as possible. The season is now in full swing - we already have a report from the Kimber Run and I know that at least one car is going down to do the Regency Run on 11th May. We have a growing number of events in the Blue Book, some new and some familiar so look out for them. As is so often the case during a busy season, there are inevitable clashes Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 4 so please understand that we do our best to give you what you want. Did anyone spot the big mistake in last month’s magazine? No? The eagle eyed amongst you will have seen that the magazine had the wrong date on the front cover! As always, we continue to welcome new members to the club and understand when members leave and move on. That doesn’t mean our membership is losing interest in the marque - in fact the number of MGs in the club is growing all the time. If you’ve acquired a new (to you) MG, why not tell us a bit about it? There are always others who like to know about out treasured motors. Finally, no-one guessed how far Morris Minor travelled last year. Jo Tibbs kept a record for him which added up to 28,454 miles! A well travelled bear. Drive Safe! Stu Simons Rose of the Shires 2014 This is your final call to book for the 10th Anniversary Rose of the Shires Charity Road Run on 1st June 2014 Start time: 8.30am Can you help? Ring Stuart on 01933 674655 The run will start in Wellingborough and consist of a route of approximately 75 miles ending at the Northampton and Lamport Railway 5 Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 2014 KIMBER RUN It was a bright but grey Sunday morning that greeted us on the 27 May, as always my first thoughts - I am looking forward to my bacon bun, Sallie’s first thoughts- we are not having the roof down. So with heater on and roof up we made an early start, to travel to the venue at the National Brewery Museum at Burton upon Trent. An uneventful cruise along the A14 and up the MI along the A511 soon brought us to the bacon bun counter, where we were greeted by Richard Monk from MGOC headquarters “every time I see you, you are eating a bacon bun” I think my reputation precedes me here! Main entrance to the museum—What an array of beers they brewed here! We had time to look around the external exhibits before setting off on the 83 mile run! Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 6 Now this is what I call horse power! The original Pale Ale beer wagon. Following our welcome breakfast the weather cheered up and the sun lazily hauled its self up into the morning sky, so with some persuasion with management the roof was down and we kicked off. The route soon took us out of Burton upon Trent and into rural Derbyshire, passing beautiful little villages like Kniveton and into the rolling dales, the scenery has probably remained unchanged for hundreds of years. The only addition being a few telegraph poles and the occasional wind farm, some say the turbine is an ugly monster, others a thing of outstanding beauty, love’m or hate’m they are here to stay. Personally I think it is a real shame to have to spoil the outstanding country views with such pieces of equipment. The route took us out toward Brassington, Bakewell on to the outskirts of Ashbourne before returning via Marchington and back to the National Brewery Centre. Upon our return we were once again greeted by Richard Monk - Sorry there are no bacon rolls left, but you will have 4 vouchers to sample Burtons most celebrated ales. After a couple of pints of Worthington Red label we were all set for a tour of the museum’s exhibits. Once again a really good day out with great like minded people who love to exercise their MG’s at every opportunity. A special thank you must go to MGOC events team for organising the run and the venue. Highly recommended on the MG Calendar for next year. Each year AutoExpress conducts a survey within its readership to find the best cars to own. This year one of the biggest surprises was the entry of the MG6 into the top ten overall best cars of the year at position 6. 9 Sixth overall in Top 150 Cars to Own Winner Best Road Handling 2014 Second Best Family Car, Third place Ride Quality, Tenth place Seat Comfort 3rd overall in Car brands Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club Have a Deco Down Under Our motoring adventure begins in Auckland following 20+hours on an Airbus 380. Our first impression as we step out of the airport building's gloom is that it's warm, everyone is in shorts, tee shirts and jangles (flip flops). The cheerful Kiwi shuttle bus driver took us from the airport to pick up the campervan. It takes a few minutes to get used to driving a larger vehicle but it seems easy enough and the good news is they drive on the right here. Our first campsite is not far away. We check in and then check out the van interior. Yep everything we need is there. So we settle back to recover from the flight and ready ourselves for the next day's drive. The New Zealand speed limit is 100kph, about 62 mph the cruise control and settle back. We head South onto what is called a motorway but which is in fact little better than a dual carriageway. We can immediately sense that traffic is light and most drivers seem to be sticking to the 100kph limit which makes us realise that things are different out here. Without realising the 4 wheeled connection, our target Napier. It's their annual Art Deco Weekend and we will be Sunday events, if we don't stop too long admiring scenery en-route that is. so we click in destination is there for the the delightful The website shows that the whole weekend is full of themed activities celebrating the town's Art Deco Heritage, it all looks too good to miss. When we arrive on the main street everyone seems to have dressed the part and it's like the clocks have all been turned back to the 1930s. The shop windows are full of period items and the buildings are all in keeping with the period. Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 10 We later establish that the town was rebuilt in 1931 after an earthquake and this is why that period is so significant to everyone .and why the buildings date from the Art Deco period. We walk on following the crowds until we reached the water front where there is a broad esplanade. More importantly the esplanade is crammed bumper to bumper with beautifully restored old cars. We had missed the grand parade but no matter, we could get up close and personal with all the gleaming paint and chrome which was dazzling in the almost cloudless blue sky and strong sunshine. The burning question of course was, "are there any MGs amongst the Buicks and Fords?" "What's that up ahead?", "Yes it's an MG" and "a real beaut ". Sadly the owner is not nearby so we don't get the chance to ask him about his car We continue along the rows of cars, there are some truly wonderful vehicles here. We later discovered (when we drove behind them to Wellington) that cars had been driven to the event from all over New Zealand. For many that involves a long drive and the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing which connects North Island and South Island Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 11 Walking on we see another car in British racing Green - Oh yes, it's another quite splendid MG - this time sporting a Union Jack just in case anyone needed to know that this was British engineering And then there was another MG although it's not within the pre 1945 rule its nice anyway Whilst we were enjoying the sight of the MGs the wide variety of obviously cherished vehicles was almost too much, we felt overwhelmed. So of course it was time to find somewhere to have a drink and dinner. On such an occasion a cocktail was essential, as I am sure you realise, so we had one or two but of course we kept the cars in sight as we ended a fabulous day. We were only a couple of days into our holiday I had already had more car ogling than I had a right to. However there was more to come on the other side of the ferry crossing. Margaret was keeping her cards close and following her directions I drove into an industrial area. on the edge of Nelson The sign on the door said "WOW"! This meant World of Wearable Art which was an interesting display of weird fashion creations which we were forbidden from photographing. Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 12 However by far the largest area was given over to a huge collection of - yes, you guessed it, - cars. I spent many happy hours in there but when it was time to leave I simply could not answer the question "If I could have one car which would it be?" - The MkII Jag, the Aston Martin but probably the drop dead gorgeous cream coloured XK150 convertible might just edge it. So was there anything more planned for an old petrol head? - Oh yes there was! After a strange night sleeping in a town centre public camping area (or car park) we walked around the corner for breakfast. Still the cards were kept close. As we walked through Nelson town centre the shops were just opening up. Then I saw it - A bar/cafe named “Lambrettas”. The scooters parked outside lead us into a wondrous two wheeled world rooted in a time when Mods ruled the roads. It was a brilliant place. The memories flooded back as we sat and drank the predictably delicious tall black (coffee) and tucked into a hearty cooked breakfast of pancakes and bacon with banana and maple syrup! So every story needs an ending, thankfully in our case, this was still some weeks away but during the rest of our travels MGs popped up here and there - parked on streets and outside restaurants. We began to realise that cars just don't rust away in New Zealand like they do here and so throughout our holiday, which was spent amongst the most breathtaking scenery, I was constantly seeing the cars of my youth still used for everyday driving. When can I go back? please? Ken Blanford Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 13 BTCC - Donnington - 20th April Jason Plato smashed the Donington Park lap record on his way to scoring his first pole position of the 2014 BTCC season. In the race itself fellow MG driver Sam Tordoff passed the eBay Motors BMW of Colin Turkington to move into second early on before setting about attacking Plato ahead. There were clearly no team orders as Tordoff hassled and harried his experienced team-mate until the chequered flag. Reigning champion Andrew Jordan claimed third for Pirtek Racing. There was little doubting the class of the field, with Plato and his MG teammate, Tordoff going on to score the first one-two finish of the BTCC season. Race One Positions: 1st. Jason Plato 2nd. Sam Tordoff 3rd Andrew Jordan It was a role reversal in race two with Tordoff jumping Plato as the 31-cars roared into Redgate corner .Whilst the front two fought over the lead, there was an incident packed race behind. The first safety car was deployed when double BTCC champion Alain Menu span on the first lap on the exit of Old Hairpin and was narrowly missed by a number of cars. His VW Passatt CC was beached in the gravel, leading to the deployment. Racing was soon underway again, but it wasn’t long before the safety car was required for a second time. A series of incidents involving a number of drivers left Chris Stockton and Rob Austin spinning across the grass on the inside of Redgate, while James Cole and Robb Holland came together and hit the wall on the outside of the same corner. Meanwhile Tordoff held Plato at bay to win his first BTCC race of the new season. Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 10 Race Two Positions: 1st. Sam Tordoff 2nd. Jason Plato 3rd Gordon Shedden After the first 2 races were dominated by the MG’s of Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff the third race provided a different winner in the shape of Gordon Shedden in the new Honda Civic Tourer. However it wasn't a straight forward victory with lots of action over the 18 laps of the Donnington circuit. Shedden initially made steady progress from fourth on the grid behind Turkington and the battling old adversaries Jason Plato and Matt Neal. The Chevrolet Cruze of Moffat went off and then clipped the MG of Marc Hynes on his return, which fired the latter into the barrier. This brought out the safety car. After this period Plato managed to overtake Neal but then began to fade as his ballast weight took hold. Shedden, Neal and Jackson all overtaking in quick succession. With Turkington still in a commanding lead the Honda of Shedden started to reel in the BMW. On the final lap they were racing nose-to-tail .On the approach to the final chicane both were seemingly late on the brakes and the two machines ran off the circuit, with Shedden returning to the tarmac first and crossing the line to take the chequered flag. Race Three Positions: 1st. Gordon Shedden 2014 DRIVER STANDINGS: 1st Andrew Jordan (Honda) 87pts 2nd. Colin Turkington 3rd Matt Neal 2nd: Jason Plato (MG6) 3rd: Gordon Shedden (Honda) 87pts 86pts 11 Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club MG Milestones The MG M-type was the first pre-war cars to be produced in large numbers. The M Type Midget was launched at the Motor Show at Olympia in October 1928, it was evident that the car would be a success and it sold well for the ensuing three years with over 3300 produced. The body was a very simple affair being very light and of fabric construction on a wooden frame. The distinctive boat tail design was fabricated separately by Carbodies of Coventry and mated with the chassis at the MG factory in Abingdon. This 1932 example was recently on sale on eBay for £30,000 Www.mgcars.jp Copyright © 2014 Northants MG Owners’ Club 16 The car utilised Morris components with slight modifications to keep costs down and to allow higher production levels. The car had a more sporty appearance over its competitors, and with good roadholding and better performance and it retailed at only £185, it sold like hot cakes! Lands End to John o’Groats with Morris Minor Many of us will recall that the youngest of our travelling bears, Morris Minor spent many happy hours and many hundreds of miles travelling with Ian Keeling & Jo Tibbs last year. No sooner than Morris had returned from flying from Lands End airport to Scillly and back than he was off by train & tube to London for the day, stopping off for photo opportunities along the way. In 2014, Morris decided he wanted to jump ship and hitch a ride with club Secretary, Stuart Simons. Not knowing what he would be doing or where he was going to go this year, it seemed like it would be a much quieter year but already, Morris’s travels have taken him far and wide! As the title of the article suggests, Morris has travelled from the South West to the North East of Great Britain but in truth, that is only part of the story! Easter over and it was time to be on the move again - this time back up north, via Aberdeen and a 14 hour ferry journey to the wild northern outpost of Lerwick on Shetland! Talk about end-to-end, this went 150 odd miles beyond the end! Shetland over, it was then Orkney then a third ferry trip back to the mainland at Scrabster and a little jaunt to John o’Groats itself and then back down to Northants over two days. A fortnight before Easter, Morris embarked on his first road-trip of the year with a quick run up to Edinburgh and back - in a single day. But this was a mere warm-up for the main events! Easter week saw our intrepid bear travel in the opposite direction and travel by land and air to the Scilly Isles! So, in a little over two weeks, many hundreds of miles on “trains and boats and planes” plus lots of road miles too. There’s a little break now before Morris’s next trip - to the Outer Hebrides and lots of island hopping. I do hope Morris doesn’t get travel sick.
