School and Community Library:
The Rangitikei District Council has visited the school to
discuss the option of the community library relocating
to the school at some time in the future. The school sees
this as a viable option and one that might be a win –
win for the both the school and the community. We
have yet to hear back about where progress is with this.
This is not something the school is pushing as such, but
it is an offer of support for the community library
should it be of any help.

One Classroom Less Next Year
With a large Year 8 group leaving this year and a drop
in enrolment numbers over the past twelve months, we
will start 2015 with six classes instead of the usual seven. The class we are losing in
effect is Room 2, with Miss Hagan’s relieving position ending at the end of this year.
Miss Leary Leaving!
Miss Leary, who has been a full time member of staff for the past three years leaves
us at the end of the year to move to Australia. Miss Leary’s full time position has
been taken by Mrs Brenda Stewart, who in recent years has started up ‘Room 1A’ at
mid year. Whether or not there will be a class started up at mid year next year will be
confirmed during term one. If there is though, it will not be Mrs Stewart as she (as
mentioned) will be full time here from day one.
Nits ☺
As a support for families striving to get rid of the age old nits-in-the-hair problems
that seem to exist on an ongoing basis, the school is to purchase nit combs and nit
shampoo to make available, free of charge, to parents.
Fitness Track Approved
The RDC have approved the construction of a fitness track by the school, around the
school and Hunterville Domain. A sub committee is going to get on to this to get
things underway this summer – should it arrive!
ERO Visit
We get a visit from the ERO team next week, following their last visit four years
ago. The BOT spent some time at their recent meeting looking at the pre review
documentation requested by ERO. The BOT meet with ERO at the beginning and
end of their visit, with the official written report expected just prior to Christmas.
Next Meeting: Wednesday 26 November, 7.30pm. All welcome!

Miss Leary is Leaving Us
Sadly, at the end of 2014 we are losing Miss Leary. She is leaving for
Melbourne, Australia and hopes to continue teaching but does not know
where yet. She says she wants to see how different schools in different
countries teach and operate, and hopes to bring new skills back to
Hunterville one day. Did you know Miss Leary was a former student here
at Hunterville? Before she came here to teach Miss Leary worked in
marketing for the New Zealand Motor Industry Training Organisation in
Wellington. She also lived in London for a while where she worked for a
homeless charity. This is where she found her inspiration to teach,
seeing that so many people had not had a good education.
Miss Leary says she will miss all the students and the community. We will
all miss her and wish her the best of luck for Melbourne.

Animal Biology Class at Hunterville School!
After lunch on a sunny afternoon Mr Marty Walshe came to Room 8 to teach us
about the human body. As you probably know, Mr Walshe is the head vet at the
Hunterville Vet Club.
We started off by walking in to our classroom, putting on plastic gloves then
looking to our side and seeing dead, skinned rabbits and possums on the floor.
The boys were instantly filled with happiness while on the other side the girls
looked disgusted and didn’t know what they were in for! We then sorted
ourselves into groups of four or five and then we were handed a scalpel, some
tweezers and some scissors!
We cut our rabbits or possums open to see how their muscles and tendons
work. We started off cutting legs open to see the nerves.
We then cut a line down the animal’s chest to see the heart and liver. In some
rabbits or possums we saw that they were pregnant and we got to cut their
baby out of the sac so we could have a look and see them in their baby stages.
When we had all finished with our animals Mr Walshe showed us a dead lamb.
He opened its skull so we could see its brain and he showed us how the brain
works.
Mr Walshe taught us so much that day and I learnt so much about our body and
the animal body.

Junior Syndicate Grandparents’ Day
On the last day of term 3 the junior school had grandparents day, while most of
the senior students had the tough kids competition. Chloe and I were the helpers
for grandparents day along with Tish, Sophie and Rebecca. During the morning
Chloe and I set up chairs, rolled out mats, and then as the grandparents arrived
we handed out programmes.
When all the grandparents were seated Mr Lewis welcomed everyone and Mrs
Hatfull spoke about what will happen throughout the afternoon. It started with
the junior students showing their grandparents a jump jam routine, and then
they showed their grandparents the chicken dance but this time the
grandparents were able to join in as well. After the dances they showed their
grandparents around the school. The bell rang at 2:30 and all the grandparents
piled in to the hall to get afternoon tea. Chloe, Rebecca, Sophie, Tish and I were
now ready to hand out food, and to take all the dirty cups to the staffroom to
get washed.
Time rushed past us and it was soon time to go home. There was a really big turn
out of grandparents and from what I saw they all seemed to enjoy being here!

My Careful Grandad
He has a round, round head because he can
see, talk or sniff. He has grey hair and short
hair. He has big glasses and if he doesn’t he
can’t see. He has one mouth so he can talk
and eat. I love my careful Grandad because

My Awesome Grandad
He has glasses they are black. The bit he looks through is see-through. Grandad
has white on the side of his head. I practice rugby passes with him. I also
practice a game but I forgot the name of it. I love peach teat lollies and it’s his
job to sell them.

His face is white and his hair is white as well because it is, but a bit of his hair is
black. He makes me laugh out loud with his funny jokes and silly faces. I love
him because he is cool and I laugh at his funny jokes.

and two legs that stick out of his tummy. He has two red rosy cheeks from
mowing the lawn on a very hot day. He takes me to McDonalds and gets me a
cheeseburger, a caramel sundae, a toy and some chips. I love my fun Grandad
and he loves me.

Lamb and Calf Day
Last Tuesday the annual lamb and calf competition took place out on our
school field. There were many students with their pets in pristine
condition. The lambs would have three classes to compete in: care and
attention, leading and calling, and prime lamb. The calves had ring craft,
care and attention, and beef and dairy. The kids all tried really hard and
well done to those who won a prize including the four trophies:
Supreme calf, Iris Collie; Supreme Lamb, Zody Takurua; Prime Lamb,
George Vennel; and Indoor Exhibits, Hannah Kilmister.
It was a great day with just a little bit of drizzle I hope it goes this well
next year.

CO2 Dragsters
Over the holidays Mr Jefferys kindly put the effort into the annual CO2
dragster design programme for any keen student from Yr 4 to Yr 8.
There were many great cars designed by the students and some parents
joined in too.
The process for the activity was to first design a car on paper and then
bring it to life on a balsa wood block using sandpaper a band saw and
paints. When it came to painting we first put on a coat of primer and
sanded it for a
smooth finish. If
we
desired
we
would
put
on
another coat, we
would then choose
the paint we wanted
to use on our cars.
The Year 6,7, and
8’s were allowed to
use spray-paint to
gain a glossy finish
for our soon to be,
fast cars.
Mr Jeffery has
selected the best
cars and has sent
them up to the
national
CO2
dragster competition in Tauranga, and hopefully some of our cars can
end out on top.

School Senior Speech Finals
Snap! The hair tie around my cue cards breaks away as I flick it against my speech
of the MH370 missing plane. I sat nervously as the other three speakers for the
school speech finals looked calm.
It started with Holly Hodgson and then moving on to Henry Kilmister. I was up next
and I remember stumbling on the steps as I waddled onto the stage of the Hunterville
School hall. As I began to speak I watched as I drew the eyes and attention of the
audience. Before I knew it the three minutes ding sounded. I though my timing was
great being only few seconds after three when I had said my last words.
I soon once again waddled off the stage to rejoin the others on the seats. The lucky
last speaker was Lydia Price and once she finished there was about a half an hour
break as we waited for the results.
We soon once again sat down, but this time to hear the results. When it came to the
Year eight section my hopes grew as Holly and Henry were both called out for
highly recommended. Now it was just Lydia and I. My name being called out last
was the best thing as I knew I had won - but at that point I also knew I would have a
lot more practicing to do after hearing that Guy Peterson and I would be competing
at the Lions Club Interschool competition just a few days later!

1st X1 Cricket Report
Last week the Hunterville 1st XI travelled to Hawera to play Auroa
School. We knew we were going to have a hard game as they are the
best primary school team in Taranaki.
We lost the toss and were put into bowl first which is not quite what we
wanted. They ended up 185 for 3 after 35 overs. Our best bowlers
were Freddie Lane 1 for 10 off three overs, myself 1 for 19 off 4 overs
and Hayden Skou 1 for 15 off 6 overs. Their best two batters got 79
and 53.
We then had to bat and were feeling positive as our openers Zak and
Freddie got us off to a nice safe start. It ended up coming down to the
last five overs where we needed just under 50. Unfortunately we fell
short by about 25 runs. Best batters were Henry Deans with 63 not out,
Freddie Lane with 20 and myself with 17.
We are now really looking forward to going on tour to Wellington next
week to play Scotts College and see the Central Stags train.

Hunterville School Cross-Country
The whole school lined up on the asphalt for a nerve racking afternoon
of running. (I have to admit I had been dreading this day all year, but
now it is done and dusted I am totally relieved.)
When we finally made our way over to the grandstand we all settled
down to listen for a quick briefing of the day from MrSmith. Then we
were under way. First was the year 0/1 girls won by Charlie Cook. And
then it was the year 0/1 boys won by the Kyle Marshall. Then followed
about seven or eight more races including a great effort by George
Lambert,
winning
his
race
by
a
country mile.

Before
we
even started
I was already
parched. Clap!
We were off
to a flying
start. When
we eventually got to the little hill, we all started to slow down. Going on
the gravel I was already fatigued but I trudged on towards the big hill. I
briskly walked up the hill, trying to catch my breath at the same time. I
ran down the hill still tired but wanting to finish.
My eyes lit up when I saw the finishing straight and I sprinted until I
reached the finish line. I literally collapsed in to a big pool of jelly. I won
but only by a skin of my teeth!
At the end of the day as a reward we were all given an iceblock, it was
cold and refreshing. It was the perfect end for a perfect day!

Lions Club Speech Interschool
Once again I sat nervously on the seats of the Hunterville School Hall,
but this time with my parents, my gran and my aunty. I waited patiently
for the fist two speakers to present and finish. I soon heard the voice
of the presenter speaking my name and I repeated the steps of the
week before, stumbling up the steps and watching a different audience
comes to the edge of their seats to hear the words of my speech.
I soon had finished and returned to my seat to sit quietly and hear the
other nine amazing speeches. The break this time wasn’t quite as long
and I got to have a chat with some kids that I had met from other
interschool
events.

Regional Speech Finals at Hawera
The room was deadly silent and tension was in the air as over fifty children sat
nervously on their seats with their parents while the briefing got underway. It was a
long drive from Hunterville to Hawera and I didn’t enjoy the covers being yanked off
me at six am.
With a quick McDonalds breakfast stop in Wanganui we were finally there and ready to
get underway with the speeches. I was put in room two and I was sixth to speak. It was
far more professional here and I could tell how nervous some of the kids were, but when
it was my turn I tried to keep my cool and I thought I did my best but was so relieved
and glad for it to be over!
We soon left the room to join the others for lunch, and it was good! A large selection of
cakes and sandwiches lay on tables. It wasn’t long before we went to our own rooms to
begin the impromptu speeches. The parents stayed in the room while the children left to
a wait in a separate room. We where called in one at a time and told the topic, and we
only got one minute to prepare a speech on that topic – “What will I be doing at age
21?” I got my thoughts together as quickly as I could and somehow managed to drag
out 60 seconds on the topic – nothing too brilliant though!
All in all it was a pretty good experience I’d say! Thanks to Hunterville Lions Club

for the opportunity.

Interschool Cross Country
“Ready…Set…CLAP”
As the other runners sprinted ahead of me, around the goalpost, I knew
this year was going to be hard and I thought the chance of me coming
first was tough. But when I got up the small hill, I looked beside me and
found that I was coming first equal with Eden Goodwin! When I was
heading down the small hill, I was now coming first. But then Eden, my
fellow Year 5 classmate, caught up to me and I started to panic (just a
bit).
It came to be a long, hard fought race, that seemed to last forever.
Then before I knew,it I could see the finish line about 100m ahead.
With Eden in front of me, I sprinted my heart and soul out. That
certainly paid off - first place, by a whisker. It was a really fun day and
I say well done to all the people who ran.

Mrs Walshe
Did you know that chocolate has to go through five grinders before being sold?
This is just one of the things that we learnt when Mrs Walshe came into school
and talked to room eight about her interesting career in food technology.
We started by making the base of chocolate by mixing the main ingredients into
a bowl then taste testing it. We learnt the process of making chocolate, and how
complicated it is. Chocolate is one of the most complicated foods to make. We
then passed around essences to smell. Lemon and tangerine were the strongest
and most potent essences. Then we discussed subjects we need to take at high
school to have a food career. Chemistry, health and home economics were the
most helpful subjects.
We then asked questioned about Mrs Walshe’s career and some recent projects
she had finished. It

Wanganui Under 65kg Rugby Reps
One Saturday after rugby I trialed for the Wanganui Rugby Reps for the 2014
season. The trial went for about two and half hours. I was the only one from
Hunterville that trailed and the only one from Hunterville that got in.
We played a game against Waiarapa Bush at Spriggens Park in Wanganui. We won
that game 48-24. We then played Manawatu a couple of weeks later and we lost that
game about 36-0. That was our toughest game. Our last game was against
Horowhenua Kapiti. We won 42-24.
I really enjoyed it as we won 2 out of 3 games. I would like to thank the coaches Mr
Godfrey and Mr McAlley.

Rangitikei Rugby Reps
The other rugby boys and I met up at McDonalds in Bulls to get our gear and travel
down to Otaki for our week long tournament. The other Hunterville School
representatives were Campbell Pene-Ferguson, Zane Munn and I.
The first morning we had an opening ceremony and then we were into our game
which we lost but had lots of fun. The next morning we had an early start training
and driving back to Otaki. This game was tougher and we really got smashed! We
drove back, more tired and bruised than ever. Later on we all got to go to the movies
and watched the Maze Runner.
The next day we had a special game for a trophy in memory of Wayne Te Huia who
had coached our team for the past fifteen years or so. The team we played was Mana.
Half of their team looked massive and a few were skinny but we lost again! The next
day we drove back home bruised and sore but it was certainly a week I will always
remember!

Rangitikei Netball Reps
Myself Chloe Watson and Iischa Roore (Yr 8 team) and Shania Graham (Yr 7)
were selected for the netball reps.
We had tournaments in Whanganui, Palmerston North and Taupo.
The Taupo tournament was my favourite by far, even though we had terrible
weather. It was my favourite because we got to stay at a motel that had a pool and a
jumping pillow. We got to stay the night there and I had a good time. On the actual
day of the tournament we four games and lost them all. It was rainy and cold but we
still gave it our best shot.
At our team prize-giving everybody in the team got a medal and I won a cup for
being best all rounder. Thank you to all of the coaches and organizes, for this really
good rep season.

U13 Rangitikei Representative Boys Hockey
During August we had trials to determine who would be selected for the team. There
were people from many schools in the Rangitikei district most of whom we had
already met at Friday night hockey. There were 16 people selected for the team with
the Hunterville players in the team being: Hayden Skou, Zody Takurua, Henry
Deans, Henry Kilmister, Zane Munn and Zak Guiniven
The team played many games leading up to Curtis cup. First we traveled to Hawkes
Bay to play games to determine which pool we would be in once at tournament. We
won all four games. From there we continued playing other Curtis teams for
practice. We still managed to be unbeaten. Later on in the season we faced the
Wanganui Hatch cup team which is a grade above us. We gave them a run for their
money with a narrow 2-1 loss but came back a second time to draw 2-2. We also
played a tournament in Levin for the Hardy Cup. We played through undefeated and
won the Hardy Cup for the second consecutive year.
The training leading up to tournament was hard and challenging. We ran around
Feilding every week to keep our fitness up along with visits from U25 blackstick
Pippa Norman and women’s blackstick Emily Naylor. It all paid off for us when we
arrived at tournament. We played five games and won against Wellington, Taranaki,
Hawkes Bay, and Hutt Valley. We managed to play our way to the finals, which
made history for Rangitikei, and played Manawatu where we played extremely well.
In the first half we had 2 early goals scored against us but came back and managed
to make it 2-2. It now came down to strokes where we kept it even until the last
sudden death stroke where the goalie was warned twice for early movement, but
unfortunately we didn’t manage to put it in the goal. So after a grueling season we
came second overall. The team would like to thank our manager Angela Turkington
and Coach Haley Grant as well as all the great parents who supported and fed us this
season. Thanks.

Shemozzle
Splish, Slosh, Splash! In and out of mud over about five hundred children, teens and
adults competed on the 1st of November in the 2014 Hunterville Shemozzle. For me
the day started with a quick registration in the town hall so I could collect my RD1
bag and they could write a number on my arms.
It wasn’t long before all the kids had arrived for the kid’s race and we then returned
to the hall for the briefing. We then had the obstacles explained and the run, as well
as what the mystery food was. It didn’t sound nice when we were told that we had to
eat black jelly with beans in it!
It wasn’t long before we all knew the rules and we were ready to go. We lined up on
the street and soon we heard the yell of, “GOO!” About one hundred and fifty
children were sprinting to get to the top spots and grab a beanie. Already kids were
starting to run up the hill and by the end the mud had been engraved between my
toes after we’d stomped through the mud. We soon sprung over a couple of gates
before coming to the fun part, the mudslide! We were told to go down in pairs so
Shannon Calkin and I dived in and with a splash we sunk into the brown muddy
water at the bottom. Dripping wet we jumped out and continued down the hill until
we came to the most dreaded bit, the food table! Piles of black lumpy jelly sat on the
table and after shoving it into my mouth I realised there was no way it was going
down, I spat it on the ground. I then repeated the process with two more before I was
told I could go. I dived into the tunnels and crawled out the other side before
entering the flooded stock crate. Next was the sack tunnels, followed by the wood
walk and the bail jump! I couldn’t wait to dive in to what once was a pool but now
just looked like a surge lake, hoping that it would wash some of my mud off. Finally
I was finished and I couldn’t wait to get dry clothes on.
I had a fun race and it was really fun watching the other races as well as looking
around. But the best part of all was… the food! I really enjoyed the shemozzle and
hope to compete again next year.

Tough Kids 2014
On the final Friday of term the majority of the senior school went to the Ohingaiti
Showgrounds to compete in the tough kids competition. I was in the Yr7/8 event
with about 130 other kids. We ran through mud and a variety of obstacles. I trudged
through the whole course and thought I was going to place in the top 20 until I came
to the waterslide. At the bottom I was wiped out by those Marton Junction kids! But
I still managed 29th.
It was really fun to compete for the last time this year and it was sad to come second
to South Makirikiri in the ‘Toughest School’ competition but it still was really fun!

Raukawa Falls Yr5 Camp Reports
‘’Make sure you close the gate so the sheep don’t come out,’’ said the
instructor. I heard the rattle from the slug guns and soon I saw a wooden
cabin with a small wooden barn door where the shooting activity was going to
be held. When everybody had sat down, Callum took us through the rules. The
main rule I remembered from this was, keep your finger off the trigger while
you identify your target!
Next was the fun part, shooting
the slug gun! The first two people
were Jade and Eden. Next Harry
and Josh both did well with their
shooting. After them, Jade’s Mum
Rachel and I had a turn. I was
pleased with my shooting, I even
scored a bullseye in the middle of
the target! Last it was Zoe and
her Grandad Robert.
Finally we finished with some real
competition shooting - Jade vs
Eden and then Josh vs me. I had
the best day!

As Callum and Ben walked into a silver shed, they told us
the rules on how to hold a gun and where the gun should be pointing. There
were two mats and two guns. Callum picked Connor and I to go up first! We
cranked the gun and put a slug into the barrel, then we lay down and looked
down the barrel right at the colourful bullseye! I pulled the steel trigger and
hit the number 9 on the target, which was alright because it was right beside
the bullseye. The next two people were Oscar and Emma. They had a shot
at the targets and Oscar got the same total of fourteen that I did. Emma
managed to hit the target. Next it was Jessicca’s turn and she shot
well because she got a total of fifteen on the target. Overall Connor was the
winner with seventeen points! Next time I hope to get a much higher score!

3,2,1, pull! I could feel the cold harness on my legs and it gave me a chill. I
saw my group pulling on the rope. I was high above the ground and feeling
dizzy. They lowered me down. We then had a challenge to get the toy smurf
before they pulled us up. I just missed it but still had fun. After that we had
dinner and it was so yum!

My favourite Activity was the low ropes. The instructor Callum took our
group. The low ropes were more dangerous than the high ropes. Before we
started Callum told us that there were two people who would catch us if we
fell. These people were called spotters. When we started it was easy but
then we got to the hardest ones. I found the tyres really hard. We had to
work as a team to get through. It was a really fun activity and I had I just so
enjoyed it.

When I was on camp my favourite activity was the high ropes. I buckled up
and saw all the different walls. I knew his would be hard. I picked out an easy
one called the pirate ladder, but I was still terrified. Then an adult clipped
me up and I climbed upwards. The rope made me feel more confident. When I
got to the top there was a board that I stood on. We than repelled down to
the bottom. It was fun and I think everyone enjoyed the thrill.

Drip, Drop as all the dishwashing liquid went down my back, “Go! already !” I
said to myself. I went really slow because I was the first one up the stairs.
At the end of the twenty second slide, there was a huge hole of water and
everyone went SPLASH! After me was Dannielle. She went a bit faster than
me and made a bit more of a splash. Jade went down, Alex, and then Keegan.
Then Robert, Zoe’s Grandad, said, “Lean back and you will go really fast and
you will get a huge SPLASH!” So I leant back and had the biggest splash ever.
I felt like I had drowned because all of the water went up and came back
down over top of my head. I kept on getting big splashes.
After that, we all hopped out and got wrapped up in our towels and got warm.
I had a really great time on that waterslide!

Monday to Sunday 8am to 3.30pm
Friday and Saturday evening for meals 6pm to 11pm, if there
are no bookings by 3pm, the Cafe' will close at 3.30pm.

We cater for up to fifty people in the cafe'. We outcater for
unlimited people and we are happy to help with all hireage if
required.

Home & School Assn News
After a long wait between requesting help and doing the job, the catering for the
Hunterville Vet Club 50th celebrations was a wonderful success on Saturday 8
November. Home and School’s job was to provide tea coffee and desserts for 550
people! Many thanks again to those who supplied delicious baking and to our eight
waitresses who assisted Sugar Plum to deliver their savoury food to the crowd.
Next on the agenda is our annual quiz night to be held in the school hall on
Thursday 27 November and hosted by Mr Alan Ramsay. Remember to get your
team together and dress up for a night of fun and entertainment! $25 for a team
of up to five people. The usual refreshments on sale and supper provided.
Waiting in the wings are the downhill mountain biking, a future fundraiser that is a
work in progress and our MONSTER AUCTION coming up on Saturday 28 March
2015!
Next meeting: Tuesday 25 November at 5pm in the school staffroom. All welcome!

10 Jan:
Three children from the Bowick family could not be a admitted to
the school because their brother had Typhoid Fever.
8 Feb:
The school was closed on account of the Caledonian Sports.
3 Apr:
I was examining St 1 in Arithmetic today. I punished W.Wakin, G
Banister and E Hurley 2 stokes, B Marshall 1 stoke with the can for only
having two Sums right, including carelessness.
25 Apr:
The school was late in commencing today as the teachers had to clean the
school after election. Several inkpots had been upset. There was one
candle stick broken.
11 May: I heard std. 1 read today. I told the other teacher that Archie Camron and
Blanche Marshall read too fast and that May Floyd does not stop in the
right places.
2 Jun:
I caned A. Cameron and Chas. Brant for throwing mud on the roof.
16 Jun:
The whole school was photographed before dismissing for the holidays.
11 Aug:
Arbor Day was postponed from the 4th inst. On account of the
approaching examination until today. Rain fell so heavily that none of the
children arrived to plant trees.
22 Aug:
All the roads were flooded so no children attened school.
7 Sep:
On account of measles having broken out and such a lot of children away,
school has been closed.
2 Oct:
The school reopened.
30 Oct:
With the attendance still poor owing to measles and after consulting with
some of the members of the school Committee, it was decided to close
the school till Monday 13th November.
24 Nov:
School reopened again on the 20th November, but on account of general
sickness amongst the children, the Committee closed the school from
today until January 15th 1894
