HART 7; Beyond Wireless
Speaker: Edward T. Ladd
HART Communication
Foundation
WirelessHART Technology continues to make the news and may in
fact help reshape how we gather field measurements and provide
control signals in the future. However, it is only one piece of the
evolutionary standard. Understanding what is available in wired
HART 7 may be more important for your short range goals. The
speaker will present facts of HART technology and what you can
expect from devices already available or in your plant today.
Ed is Director of Technology Programs for the HART Communication Foundation. A DeVry Institute of Technology Alumnus, Ed has
over 20 years experience in process automation and related fields
including work in field service, engineering and lab supervision and
over 15 years in sales, marketing and program management. In
addition to his work experience Ed had been published by a number of industry journals in Europe and the USA. Most recently, Ed
was with ISA as Director of Conferences and Technical Programs.
Ed is a Senior member of ISA and has held many volunteer leadership roles including Director of the Process Measurement and Control Division and 04-05 ISA Expo Conference Chair. Ed has had a
continuous membership in ISA since 1988.

Our November meeting will be at URS Corporation on Nov 3rd at 11:30 am. Be sure to
attend. For those of you who really want to get more involved in the ISA Houston Section,
we have a board meeting before the general meeting This is where all the decisions are
made about the direction of your section and it is open to all section members. If you want
to see how I run this section, this is where it happens. So get involved and just see how
much fun we have as a section.
The Chili Cook Off is on Nov 4th at the Houston Farm & Ranch Club. This is a fun event
and you can get your invite from your favorite vendor who has a team and table at his event. The chili is always good.
The weather promises to be just fine and comfortable this time of year. For more information and to confirm attendance,
go to our link: http://www.houstonisa.org/Cook_off_2010/. RSVP and get in Free!
Now let me comment on the events that occurred in October:
ChemInnovations—The ISA Houston Section had a large booth at this event and we met a lot of people. The show is a
new event and had good traffic, but next year the show will be held September 13-15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston and in conjunction with Texas A&M’s Turbomachinery Symposium and Pump Symposium. This will be a very large show since all three shows will reciprocate on attendees being able to attend any of the
three shows. I would expect the ChemInnovations portion to easily double in size and now that the local industry knows
that this show which will occur annually here in Houston. I would expect our booth traffic to double as well. So we are
excited about working with ChemInnovations again next year as this is our major fundraiser for our scholarship program.
ISA Automation Week—The ISA Houston Section members were invited to view the exhibits on Monday afternoon and
there was a large turnout. We were limited only to that Monday afternoon and after that point, only the people who attended the conference were allowed to see the exhibits. Rick Williams did a great job of coordinating the room monitors
our section provided. The monitors get to sit in on the presentations for free. Mary Cannon and her helpers did a fabulous job providing the western decorations for the Wednesday evening event. She also coordinated the Yapfest event
Tuesday night and the student Career Day on Friday. Mary’s dedication and passion for the ISA is very noteworthy.
ISA Automation Week will be held in Mobile, Alabama next year on October 17 -20, 2011.

Details are on the ISA web-
ISA After Gala Party—Well this was a huge success and ISA was very appreciative that our section provided this event
for the attendees of the ISA Fall Leadership Meeting and ISA Automation Week and the attendees of the Honors and
Awards Gala. The view from the 24th floor and the Monarch room with large windows on both sides at night is magnificent. If you have never seen a group of engineers dancing it is an awesome and sometimes scary sight. I know just
about all of these people and I was impressed as a seasoned dancer. The DJ was from PRP Entertainment here in
Houston and they exceeded my expectations. They kept the party going and the Westin staff finally ran us out of the
room at 12:30 am in the morning. But we were going strong to the end. Being part of ISA and the Houston Section is a
lot of fun.
ISA Fall Leader’s Meeting—Another success with all of the many rooms full of attendees. There were plenty of choices
of topics to learn about in the many functions of ISA and how our society operates, as well as, opportunities to make a
change in the direction the society is going. I am always impressed by how professional the volunteer leadership of ISA
is and the passion on display for the society. It certainly makes me very proud to be a member of this great organization
for engineers and scientists in our industry.
Don’t forget to check out the various activities done by our subsections which are the ISA Pipeline Subsection and also
the ISA Houston Analysis Subsection.
This is an exciting year!
