INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ARUBA/2014-2015/ISSUE 6
Interview:
Mr. Richard
by Pedro Santema
!
Breeze: Where were you teaching
before you came to ISA? RV: Before I
came to ISA, I was teaching in the local
public schools. I taught there for
twelve years. Breeze: What motivated
you to change schools? RV: I practically
saw what was coming so that made me
bored. I needed a challenge so thats
why I’m here now. Breeze: What do
you like most about teaching third
grade? RV: Teaching third grade is very
spontaneous. I taught it before so I
know how to work with them. Breeze:
What do you find challenging about
teaching third grade? RV: The students
themselves are challenging and they
learn too fast so I have to try to keep
up. If I go too slow then they get bored
so I need to keep a steady pace. Breeze:
What have the third graders been
learning recently? RV: They are learning
about the human body, adding and
subtracting, writing, reading stories and
social studies. Breeze: What method do
you use to teach the third graders? RV:
First, I introduce the subject to get
them comfortable with it. When they
know the subject they can show me
that they know about the subject. Then
we get on the desks and write. Breeze:
How many places have you been to?
RV: I have been to Germany many
times, the United States, Puerto Rico,
Colombia and Venezuela.
Proposed Transportation Improvement
by Raymond Maduro
!
Many concerns have arisen over the years over the fact
that buses use excessive amounts of fuel when traveling
around Wayaca to get to certain destinations, in particular,
San Nicolas. The ISA administration has proposed a new
road that will run through Wayaca which will connect to
the roads leading to Santa Cruz and San Nicolas. This road
is proposed to be located near the major roundabout in
Wayaca that leads to the school. This new proposed plan
will significantly improve fuel conservation on bus routes
to Santa Cruz and San Nicolas. ISA’s administration is
hopeful that this new route will lead to a reduction in
transportation costs. These are savings that could possibly
result in reduced tuition. Although the government has
taken the plan into consideration, it is still unknown when
this plan will be carried out, but definitely in the near
future!
SAT EXAM
by Antoanet Moussali
With the registration deadline just
being around the corner, October 9, it
is important to remind students of the
WORD OF THE WEEK
Success
The word success, “result outcome,” originates from the Latin
importance of the SAT Reasoning Test.
word successus “an advance, a coming up; a good result, happy

usually accept students according to
their SAT scores, along with their high
school GPA (Grade Point Average), and
extracurricular activities. Although the
SAT seems very daunting at first, I can tell
you from experience, your score will get
better with practice. The best way to
prepare for the Reading section of the
SAT is by expanding one’s vocabulary,
whether it be by reading more challenging
books or by memorizing a few “big”
words a day. For the Mathematics section,
it is better to practice and familiarize
oneself with the type of questions that
are usually asked on the test so that on
test day, they are not as intimidating.
These tips are guaranteed to earn you a
few hundred points on the combined
score, so make sure to follow these tips
on a consistent basis. For reference, the
College Board website says that the
average score for each section is as
follows: Critical Reading, 496;
Mathematics, 514; and Writing, 488.
Nonetheless, it is always better to strive
for higher scores as competitive colleges
and universities demand them and they
might base their decision on this number.
Good luck to all the juniors and seniors
and may your score reflect your efforts
and accomplishments!

Weekly senior catch up: Maria Pintaudi
by Raymond Maduro
Maria Pintaudi is a senior this year at ISA. She is
interested in attending university in Canada. She’s
currently applying to her reach college which is UBC
(University of British Columbia) located in Vancouver, BC
and wishes to major in mechanical engineering and minor
in marketing. We hope to see Maria succeed in her future!
PTA by Melissa Salamo
The past two years I have had the honor of being
part of ISA’s Parent Teacher Association. This group
of parents is dedicated to contribute their time and
efforts to the ISA community by organizing events,
fundraising, creating awareness etc. At the
beginning of this school year the PTA sent out a
letter regarding this year’s elections. Since there
were exactly enough applicants to fill up the vacant
positions, we were able to form a complete Board
without the need for elections. In this year’s Board
we even have parents that have children in all
departments: Montessori/Elementary/MS/HS

Girl’s Soccer Tournament
by Maura Baroud
The ISA girls soccer team is now participating in the annual
IBISA soccer tournament! The dates are yet to be determined, but
the games usually take place at the Frans Figaroa Stadium in late
October or early November. The games usually start at 4PM and
end at 6PM. Players should arrive at the stadium 20-30 minutes
before the games start. We do not know what the other
participating schools are, but last year they were Colegio
Arubano, La Salle School, De Schakel, PiusX, EPB, and other
schools. The age requirement is determined by year of birth. This
year, participants must have been born between years 2001 and 2003. We will keep you informed on all
tournament results whilst we get them. It would be great to see you attend the tournament and support
the girls playing!

Aquaponics
by Kunal Nathani
ISA is entering Aruba Bank’s annual Good for Neighborhood Project. This project is designed to
assists schools with improving their programs. ISA is attempting to establish a sustainable
school project that will promote energy conservation, green energy, and bring ISA together as a
community. The breeze had the opportunity to interview Pavan Sawalani and Oriella Mansur.
Together with Aditya, Jonah, and Federika they have
come up with an aquaponics system idea. Pavan stated,
“the aquaponics pump system will be powered by a
wind turbine, or a solar panel, and be used for the ISA
garden.” The project involves all of the ISA community,
that includes parents, teachers, and students.
However, there are five main team leaders: Aditya,
Federika, Oriella, Jonah, and Pavan. We also have two
amazing teachers. Mr. Gunn and Mr. Lee will be guiding
them with their astute background knowledge on
renewable energy and aquaponics.
For three weeks, the five team leaders, RES, and Student Council will be developing an efficient
and thorough proposal that they must turn in to Aruba Bank. They will be given 5000 AWG. to
jumpstart their project. In three weeks they have to complete the project and will have visits
from Aruba Bank representatives and judges. The goal is to promote our school to the
community and begin the transition to renewable energy. As part of the requirements, the
project team has to maintain and promote an ISA Facebook group that was given to them by
Aruba Bank. If you are interested in finding information about the project you can go on their
Facebook page to see the pictures and information about their progress. The page that receives
the most likes will receive an additional price. You can vote for our school at
