On September 26, 2015, approximately 28 Board
members and guests met for a Club Board special meeting at
the beautiful Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar.

Harvard alumni groups. Recommendations included starting a mentorship program to connect recent grads and alumni in similar careers, establishing internships in finance and
entrepreneurship for undergrads in Los Angeles during
Wintersession, and extending a discounted Crimson membership with HBSA-OC to all Harvard Club members, allowing
them to bring a guest to all HBSA-OC events for a year.
The meeting was enhanced by the addition of special guests
LA City Captain, Tomi Adeyemi ’15, Casey Lough ALS who
has relocated to Orange County after working with the HAA
in Cambridge, Karen Hernandez, President of the HBSA-OC,
and co-Board members, Lance Stuart HBS, Jim Schnell HBS,
and Jason LA HBS.

The Board of the Harvard Club of Southern California is now
soliciting nominations for the “John Harvard Award” and the
“Excellence in Education Award” to be presented at our Annual
Dinner in June 2016. We will use the following criteria to choose the
awardees:
The John Harvard Award for Distinguished Service to the
Community
• Active in public service
• Significant, innovative work to improve SoCal society
• Recognized by a large portion of the membership
• An outstanding leader in his/her field
• Has high personal integrity
• Harvard connection a plus but not necessary
• Able to attend dinner and make a brief speech
Excellence in Education Award
• Direct involvement in the field of education,
• Primary, secondary, or higher education in Southern
California, or in a role that affects the education of children or
young adults
• Demonstrated excellence and substantial achievement in the

The John Harvard Award has been given annually by the Club
since 1974, and the Excellence in Education award has been given

Jimenez Jaramillo ’15
Alejandro Jimenez Jaramillo ’15, who majored in neurobiology,
was born in Glendale, CA and graduated from Eagle Rock High School
in 2011. His mother is Jeannine Jaramillo AB ’82.
In high school, Alejandro was captain of the soccer, cross country,
and track & field teams and played French Horn in the school orchestra. During his junior year of high school, he
served as a United States House of Representatives page for Xavier Becerra, Congressman for the 34th District of
California.
At Harvard, he lived in Mather House and was involved in a variety of on campus roles, including serving
on the Senior Class Committee as a Class Marshal, co-chairing the Harvard CIVICS program, dancing with the
Expressions Dance Company, and playing with the Harvard University Band. He has also worked with a number of
education initiatives that took him overseas to Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Costa Rica, and Israel.
Alejandro spent this past summer reflecting on college and preparing to serve as a Harvard-Stowe teaching
Fellow at the Stowe School in Buckingham in England, where he will be teaching algebra, assisting with the crew
and soccer teams, and serving as a cultural ambassador for the United States and the American college system.

HCSC: What surprised you about being a student at Harvard?
AJJ: One of the things that surprised me most about being a student at Harvard was how many different opportunities existed to find ideas and perspectives I had never considered before. From topics that cover artificial intelligence
to spirituality to racial inequalities in America, there was always a readily accessible class, guest speaker, or friend
that could challenge what I thought or introduce something new into my worldview.
HCSC: When was the first time you visited Harvard and what were your impressions at that time?
AJJ: I visited Harvard for the first time with my family when I was 8 years old; my mother and father are very fond
of Cambridge and I can clearly recall images of the ivy-laden walls during a winter trip. It was my first time ever
seeing snow, something that would become a far more common sight when I was an undergraduate.
HCSC: What was your favorite class (or professor) and why?
AJJ: My favorite professor at Harvard was David Carrasco, a faculty member of the Divinity School who has taught
several undergraduate courses on Mesoamerican society and religion. I had the fortune of taking a general education
course that addressed the cultural, social, and sexual changes that took place during the Spanish conquest of
Mesoamerica and how these changes have extended into modern day American and Mesoamerican society.
Professor Carrasco had the invaluable talent of providing students with a personal lens to understand and connect
with history that is half a millennium away.
HCSC: What has been your funniest moment at Harvard?
AJJ: The Harvard University Band has full band cheers and section cheers. One of the most beloved section cheers
that my section (The Low Brass) plays is the theme from “Ghostbusters.” During the Harvard -Cornell game in 2011,
we played this cheer with usual gusto and energy. A gentlemen in pink chinos and a light blue cashmere sweater
stood up and shouted at us to “Play That One Again!”. That man was Bill Murray (who starred in the movie). He
later came and conducted us through a few of our end-of-game fight songs. Once again, the Band always wins.
HCSC: If you were President of Harvard, what would you change?
AJJ: If I was President of Harvard, I would try to make two specific changes. First, I would implement a greater
degree of structured programs for undergraduate reflection meant to provide students with the time and support to
critically consider long-term goals (which careers, issues, and lifestyles matter most to students) and more short term
lifestyle habits (allowing students to improve how they take care of their bodies, minds, and souls while at Harvard).
Second, I would try to find and hire staff members to make Harvard as an institution more demographically similar
to the students it serves (in terms of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and first-gen status) at multiple levels
(residential, administrative, and leadership).
HCSC: What do you miss most about Southern California (other than the weather, family, and friends)?
AJJ: I miss the pace of life in California most. Cambridge and greater New England is an incredible area and I have
immense respect for people that have grown up in climates as harsh as Boston’s winter, but there is nowhere on Earth
that I feel as relaxed as I do in California.
HCSC: How do you think Southern California will figure into your future after Harvard?
AJJ: I plan to pursue a career in education and I hope I will be able to contribute my talents and enthusiasm to making education more equitable and higher education more accessible for under-resourced communities in California.
I was fortunate to attend a high-quality public school in LAUSD where I had the benefits of working with exceptional teachers without forgetting the massive inequalities and inefficiencies within the school district. I hope that I
can one day make the pathway to college and a stable future more attainable for students who need that option most
desperately.
