SECRET SOCIETIES AND CLUBS
¡  Traditionally, in the Ivies, there are no fraternities or sororities
¡  Instead, at Yale, there are legends of secret societies like the

¡  At Harvard, we have Final Clubs
¡  Did you know that Facebook was started by Mark Zuckerberg
at Harvard while he was a student because he was upset
about not being invited to join a Final Club?

FINAL CLUBS
¡  Privately owned, on-campus “social” clubs
¡  Considered to be a step above a fraternity
§  All male, more exclusive
¡  Must be invited by current members of the club in order to go
through initiation
§  a process through which prospective members are selected
¡  At Harvard, there are 8:
§  Alpha Delta (the A.D.)
§  Porcellian Club (the P.C. or the Porc)
§  The Fox
§  The Owl
§  The Spee
§  The Phoenix
§  The Delphic
§  The Fly
DORM LIFE
¡  For those of us who don’t live
in a fraternity/sorority/club
house, we live in a dorm
¡  Center of social interaction
§  Where we eat, sleep, study and
spend free time
¡  This usually means
ROOMMATES!
§  One of the most difficult aspects
of transitioning to college is
living with someone new,
someone you might not know
very well
§  And usually, there is not a lot of
space to share!
§  And sometimes, a shared
bathroom
HOUSES
HOUSING DAY & SORTING
¡  All freshman must live together in the center of campus
¡  At the end of their first year, they are randomly sorted into a
house sort of like in Harr y Potter
¡  Older students who are members of that house get dressed up
and deliver them a letter with their housing assignment in the
morning on Housing Day
¡  The rest of the day revolves around celebrations
§  This tradition is the most important on campus
§  It is a day to celebrate community

¡  At Harvard, there are 12 houses on campus
¡  Each house has its own dinning hall and library
¡  Many have other special facilities
§  Gyms
§  Music rooms
§  TV rooms
§  Kitchens
¡  Each house has its own colors, mascot and crest
¡  Each house also comes with its own traditions
¡  Students live in their house for the next three years of college

¡  Every winter each house has a formal to celebrate the holidays
¡  In the spring, there is another formal before the year ends
FORMAL
¡ Formals are a great chance to get dressed up, have a
nice dinner and dance with all your friends
¡ They are planned at the same time as exams to give
students a break from studying
¡ Usually there is a theme:
§  Great Gatsby
§  Winter Wonderland
§  Masquerade
§  Under the Sea
§  Jazz Night
§  James Bond, Casino Royal
§  Black & White
¡ And a live band or DJ
