The two organizations applied for a certificate of need from the Tennessee Health Systems Development Agency in July. The application was deemed complete for review and will be considered on Oct. 23. The facility is tentatively named the NHC/Maury County Regional Transitional Care Center and would be a 112-bed skilled nursing home. A skilled nursing facility is a certification that allows for Medicare reimbursement. The new facility will be created by relocating and replacing the 92-bed NHC Healthcare-Hillview, 2710 Trotwood Ave., and the 20-bed Maury Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit to an 11-acre site at 5004 Trotwood Ave., according to the certificate of need. The estimated project cost is $18,161,672. The new facility would help manage patients who leave after a short-term care stay but may need a higher level of care than can be provided at home, Watson said. Coggin said a new facility would also help both entities comply with changes in the Affordable Care Act. “Skilled nursing facilities and hospitals will be working much closer than they ever have in the past in making sure that patients who are leaving the hospital are in a location where they can get the best quality and (help) reduce readmission to the hospital,” Coggin said. A tenet of the ACA is helping to reduce occurrences of hospital readmissions, Watson added. Most patients at the facility would be short-term or less than 21 days, Coggin said. The patients would be predominately those recovering from knee and hip replacements, stroke victims and heart patients, he added. If the HSDA approves the certificate of need, it would be at least 18 months before the facility is operational, Coggin said. The Hillview building would be repurposed, but its specific use has not been determined, Coggin said. The MRMC unit would likely be used for office functions, Watson said. NHC also operates another facility in Columbia at 101 Walnut Lane and a home care branch at 915 S. James Campbell Blvd., according to its website.
